BIG Turbo 500+hp Galant VR-4, AKA the Mitsubishi Evo's Grandfather

  • Before the Mitsubishi Evo, there was another venerated AWD turbo'd sedan in the DSM lineup: the Galant VR-4. AWD, 4G63 powered, and relatively light compared to any modern sheetmetal. While this car may look unassuming to most, it comes with some proper rally pedigree and a serious 500+ engine build. And SO MANY TURBO NOISES.

I miss my Starion (turbo/oem widebody) and I will replace it someday and have one of these. In '92, I went to the dealership to test drive this VR4 awd/aws, and immediately fell in love, but my wallet couldn't match my enthusiasm unfortunately. It was either this, or the Closed Deck Legacy SS. Unfortunately I purchased neither. To this day I regret it.
I did however, purchase about 4 eclipses, an evo, and one of my favorites; a 1989 Starion ESI-R, Which I nicknames, my "Silver Bullet."

I used to really want one of these. Guy in my neighborhood used to have a flat black one. It always looked so understated and unassuming. But if you actually knew what it was it was badass

The vr4 has a proud heritage of ruleing the streets in the 90s here in new Zealand, only the DOHC TURBO Interplay mazdas were as deadly, full time 4wd.

Very beautiful example of a VR4!!!! I have the 91' hatchback but 2L NA stock engine FWD. The one I have was built for comfort but I could do with some more power. I absolutely love it as it was an over-engineered car for the era. I would not have fitted the titanic turbo though because I hate very high boost thresholds but if he loves it then I can't see why not :)

Thank you for build and keep this GVR4 (The Evo0) as your tuner car.... Not much people know about this rare car history especially as first Main Weapon of Rally Car from Mitsubishi and become The big boss and The Legend of Rally with Impreza WRX 92 from Subaru as hot competitor in that time.
I have this car too as my daily car, but the condition is not much good now and I cant repair all because the parts here is very expensive and very rare.... This video give me inspiration to keep this car and someday can build this car like yours.

That's a mint car, and the no power below 4k rpm is why people do stroker kits on these engines...VR4's are all over the place in NZ but still not many that clean.

Nice build. I like old cars, still got my 1995 Saturn SL2, super light, with a lot of bolt ons, ported polished intake bigger TBI, header, polyurethane and stiffer springs, lots of potential! Cars are better built than bought, like they say.

I ran one of these for 10 years. 97-07. #044. 92. Looked stock. Spent 30k at AMS on it. Fucking unreal with the aws. But the seat belts didnt lock, and I was having kids like fun, so we sold it to a proper young man and had DEVO build us a 03 evo 8 from a shell. Monster. Hated it. I do miss my vr4, but I have my eye on some nest new cars now that the kids are grown up.
