I have the same addiction to metal cabinets and containers. I already have several projects at home that I really need to finish. If only there was enough time.
Thanks for the video. I have on old rusty cabinet in my garage that was inherited with my house. It's over 6ft tall and great storage so I don't want to give up on it. Ironically I had already decided to paint it red. Your video was super helpful.
Thanks! Yeah that was the initial plan, but the original finish turned out to be in such good shape, I thought it would be less likely to get scraped up over time if I just left it. Powder coat will alway be superior to spray paint.
@@MichaelAlm How many coats of red did you spray on? 1 or 2? You could also use one of those ikea metal drawers too-- I'm just not sure of the weight it could handle. Great job!
That cabinet is "SWEET" I'm hooked on metal boxes too ,tool boxes and drawers. They sure are piling up. Mind you I want to chuck my big Tanker metal desk.can't get anyone to take it away. I'm hooked on wood boxes also and cases , for some reason people throw them out around here like crazy! Everything from small router bit boxes to large gouge chisel boxes anything in between and nice wood ta boot! I make art boxes out of them and store art supplies in them .great video!
I just found your channel and watched one of your videos for the first time. You are immediately one of my favourite makers. Inspiring videos, very talented - keep it up!
I found a beautiful old metal cabinet that I want to refurbish. I've never done a metal project, but I'm eager to give this a try. You have so much amazing equipment. Can you give the amateur some tips on what to use lacking a decked out shop?
I found your channel about a month ago I think. I love the fact that you aren't limiting yourself to just one material. Metal, paintings, wood, probably other stuff I haven't seen yet. Very inspirational for me starting with woodworking and liking graphic design! Great stuff!
You should look in to a rust converter. CRC has a good one and it chemically changes the rust and stops it and can just be paint brushed on. Then with a good paint job it should never rust. It looks great.
@@MichaelAlmfour years later I finally got a filing cabinet and was looking for a good video. Found yours and my comment- it's funny how things work out sometimes. 😂
was wondering how you lubricated the drawers as I have one and struggle to keep the lubrication in place. Seems to last a few weeks and then is gone, I'm using PTFE spray and have tried cycle chain lube too.
Binging @double speed. Your extraction system started this an hour ago. Curious how your vision would make the shelves stronger, and maybe adjustable? French cleat one side, rabbit on the other? Drop on, then slide in?
probably old felt pads that had dried up and crumbled. I've seen that quite a few times when restoring furniture. People place them underneath for "easy stabilizers" and doesn't realize that they only make sure that the piece won't slide across the floor. So some people add several of them in a weak attempt at making the piece level. It won't make it level. It'll just destabilize it and once people figure that out, they throw out the entire thing because they're tired of trying to "fix" it.
Hello, I also have a couple metal card catalog drawers which are in a very mild rusty condition. May I know what grit of the sandpaper did you use before you put the primer on?
Thank you for the tip. I also have another question. There are some very very old stickers or labels on the box. How can get them off without scrubbing? What’s the proper way to do it?
Wow! That was so satisfying! I have a great I e to do- would love to tag you! I’m going to message you on Instagram. Hope you get it. I do have a question
Using some old DVD cubes for extra storage in my garage. Great to
re-use old stuff 👍🏻
What a find! You did a great job!

Very beautiful! Love the mix of wood and metal! Always a classic combo.
This cabine turned out great!

10/10, what a great concept.
I love it I love tools I love working on stuff and I love it
Awesome build! The radiused edges give it a nice Art Deco look.
Thanks Derek! Yeah I was joking in Instagram that it looked like a Miami Beach hotel
First time watcher UK. The casters and casing is a brilliant idea.

Really enjoyed watching...

excellent work , nicely demonstrated
Nice find, awesome little cabinet. I'd love to pick one up for $20.00. Great parts storage cabinet.
Same here with metal containers and furniture 😁
Awesome transformation, Michael! I have the same affinity for old metal cabinets and containers...there's just something so cool about them!
Thanks Ethan! I know!! I have to stop myself from buying too many
Great job man! It turned out into a really nice piece of furniture. 🇧🇷
Perfect fit under the saw. Sweet build.
Thanks Chris! Yeah it just barely made it.😅
Came out really nice looking. Good job
Thanks for sharing this. Looking to repaint some metal (filing) cabinets. Love what you did. Great job.
Thats turn out super cool!! The pop color was a very good idea!! Congrats!!
Thank you!
Awesome project! Great work.
Turned out really cool!
Thanks Jon!
Nice art deco look. Amazing how red is just a bear to paint without a primer coat.
Thanks Jeff! Yeah reds don’t cover well
@@MichaelAlm Little tip for a next one: Red does very well on top of a grey (primer) layer ;-)
Nicely done.
satisfyingly fit perfectly
Super cute! I have something similar in the garage awaiting a paint job. Can’t wait to get started after seeing this! Good job!
Thanks! Let me know how yours turns out 😁
@@MichaelAlm Will do!
It turned out fantastic!
Next time you run into rust you might want to try Naval Jelly... it removes rust without removing metal...
Good to know, thanks!
Good job man.....
That worked out really well but it seemed like a lot of work!
It only took an afternoon. Could’ve been a lot faster if I wasn’t filming 😉

Michael, great results. Looks awesome. What was your sander setup for this project?
Any thought / consideration on getting old cabinets like these re-powder coated at a local shop?
0:44 thats what she said!
What kind of grinder pad or buffer did you use to get off the surface rust?
Get a spray can trigger! Spray painting sucks! Great video!
Beautifull 🇵🇹😘👍
10:05 I see you live in or near Tacoma, Washington. I live in Key Peninsula, across the Galloping Gertie and up SR16 a few more miles.
I love that red, great organization for the shop is always a plus. Bummer on those nails 😅
Thanks Brian! 😂

It looks great! But where did you get the extra knobs? There wasn't one per drawer when you started and one of them didn't match.
Love your style! That is some sexy shop furniture! 😂
Thanks!
Muito bom amigão.
Great project!I believe I have the same cabinet, it was my fathers. I also have a double one. Would you know the manufacture of these
Perfect job.😊 good luck brother's Lhaj BELAAID work Shop from Morocco
Thank you!
Was that cabinet wobbling and twisting before you put the wooden frame round it.
Terrific build. I just picked up a small set of metal drawers that I’m going to fix up. Just wondering. What’s the brand of your orbital sander?
Binging @double speed. Your extraction system started this an hour ago. Curious how your vision would make the shelves stronger, and maybe adjustable? French cleat one side, rabbit on the other? Drop on, then slide in?
im just curious to why you never made the stand the same hight as the draws. looks great thoe
I can’t remember if it was for the pop of red at the top or because I only had so much plywood 🤷🏼♂️
Hi I want to try this but I don’t have the sanding tool. Is there something else I can use by hand
At 2:30 what was the white stuff you were scrapping off?
probably old felt pads that had dried up and crumbled. I've seen that quite a few times when restoring furniture. Did or does that cabinet have any stickers/tags indicating who made it or what kind of cabinet it is? Thanks!
I didn’t see any...
Looks like it was always meant to be there, dude.
I know! When I took the measurements I couldn’t believe it. On top of that I had all the right pieces of scrap in my shop. That never happens!
Hello, I also have a couple metal card catalog drawers which are in a very mild rusty condition. May I know what grit of the sandpaper did you use before you put the primer on?
I just used 220. Anything lower and it leaves swirl marks. Let me know how yours turns out 😁
Thank you for the tip. I also have another question. There are some very very old stickers or labels on the box. How can get them off without scrubbing? What’s the proper way to do it?
@@my2ndoneny if you're repainting anyway I've always found a wipe over with acetone clears off old labels and the glue residue.
Love the end result! What grit sandpaper did you use on the cabinet?
Thanks! 220 grit. I didn't want to get swirl marks in it. Mostly just knocking down the rust, and roughing up the old paint
SHOW!
А внутри полки остались ржавыми. Прекрасно.
👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️🇺🇸
A cheap 4-1:2” grinder with a wire wheel would have saved you a lot of work. Or a wire cup wheel.
I'll give that a shot next time 👍
if I may ask, where are you from? as in what state?
Instagram says Seattle
Thought I recognized a few things that showed close proximity to where I live. Cool
