In this furniture makeover, I give a Bauhaus design cabinet from the 1920s a restoration to give it a more modern and "retro" look, taking inspiration from retro coolers from the 1950s!
I picked up this very unique piece from FB Marketplace for just $10. When I saw how the metal frame was rusting and painted all over, I was itching to bring it back to life.
Using a grit progression of 60, 120, 280, 600, 1000, to 2000 and a final buff with Flitz Polish, I gave the frame a mirror finish. Given the round shape and the amount of surface area, this was quite the time consuming task. Luckily, I found this process to be extremely satisfying, so I was only a little bit miserable sanding away at it for days.
For the body, I wanted to switch out just the top with a bit of a thicker and sturdier wood. It was just a little too flimsy for my liking, and it's a simple way to drastically increase the quality of a piece. For the paint, I used Krylon's All-In-One Fusion spray paint in Glossy Red Pepper. The back of the can tells you to apply the next coat within 2 hours or after 48 hours, and I learned that there's a reason for this. I applied my third coat 24 hours after my second, and it looked like there had been an earthquake. I believe this happened because the surface was dry while the inside was still drying, and applying another coat made the dried up layer "scrunch up". To fix this, I waited the full 48 hours for it to dry, sanded it smooth, then applied my coats. Lesson learned!
The handle design was heavily inspired by some of the fridge door handles from the 1950s. I really love the retro look...
I hope you find some value in this video. If you do, please give it a like! I appreciate it :)
    - Andy

Some of you asked what exactly this piece of furniture is, and I wasn't actually sure. So, I did some research. I believe it's a bedside or medical cabinet with a Bauhaus design, a style originating from Germany in the 1920s. Pretty cool!

Fantastic transformation...as always. Very satisfying to see trash transformed to treasure. This scratches me right where I itch!
By the way, I'm a Gen X'r with lots of experience, but I learned two important things today!
    1) You can give everyday steel a chrome-like finish! I had no idea!
    2) I have used 600grit for wet sanding in the past, but never knew there was a 2000grit!
I have a very rusty tri square with wood handle, brass edge and metal ruler. I am going to do all of your techniques to bring back it's original lustre.
My Dad gave it to me recently, and we build some things together, so it has sentimental value.
    Thanks! From Toronto

@@ModernMakeovers Thanks! I started working on restoring the tri-square. looks really good, however, I can't seem to get the deeply embedded rust out way below the surface. I have tried a 24hr soak in vinegar and baking soda and sanding with 80grit and WD-40. Am I right to assume some deep black stains might be impossible to remove?

I’m nitpicking, but the only thing I’d have considered doing differently was painting/prepping the hinge so it was chrome to match the base. That being said I appreciate you showing how you can achieve a quality product no matter what finish you’re using - stain, professional sprayer, or rattle can paint. Beautiful work as always!

As I said before you are INSANE. Crazy talent, crazy craftsmanship, and an insane inspiration. Have to say I am beyond impressed more like mind blown.
So this "alligatored" on you? Sorry, but it is comforting to know that I am not the only one with some bad luck here and there. A couple questions: Since this finish showscases and magnifies every tiny imperfection, would a "sanding primer" have been useful? Also, will the beautiful metal retain this shine or would a wax or some protective coating be beneficial?
My 2 cents: the handle is wonderful, but to me, a vintage chrome handle would be better. In my area, there are 2 used restaurant supply "junkyards", and I am sure you could get a great handle from one of those places.
I appreciate your humor. This vid actually made my day. Thanks.

I watched this because I hoped to learn more about the fashion of the piece, why it was so rare, why would anyone, in god's name, want that in their house... So I did some research too and learned that the 20's and 30's were the height of industrialism and it was fashionable for items to be created from steel or aluminium and either painted or chromed. That trend came to an end when WWII began.
