After many years of using an abusing my tools by throwing them in dresser drawers, I decided enough was enough. I built this 6ftx2ft storage unit to house all my tools and then some. The name of the game was space utilization. My goal here was to create drawers that would not be come catch alls. This is why I made so many shallow drawers. There is less chance of me stacking tools on top of each other now. In the future I will post a part 2 to this project in which I make dividers for all my tools within the drawers to keep them in their place.
The unit is made with 3/4 Birch ply and 1/2 oak ply for the drawer bottoms. Plans have been altered with 1/2" ply for drawers sides to save money and keep the weight down. Drawer slides used are 20"
Paint color on this is Pittsburgh Paints Nautica Line - Majolica Blue
The top was trimmed with solid birch and finished with 4 coats of polyurethane.

Yes dude! I've been waiting for this.
Thank you... My project starts tomorrow :) I will make one change of splitting it into two cabinets of 48 and 24 due to space constraints.
Your guide and video will help as this is my first project starting from scratch.
@@M-J-P Happy building! Id love to see the final product! @ me on insta!
What size drawer slides did you use for these plans?
Your a Legend.!
Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included ruclips.net/user/postUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.
Thanks Karen!
As someone who has really bad ADHD, I appreciate this video. You made it very interesting the entire time. Plus, your work turned out really nice!
O I understand completely, im the same way. Glad you liked the video
LOL. Lucky You. I have been using my parents dresser drawers that were purchased in 1950. We have had a lot of rain lately, and I put some chocks under it to stop it getting wet. The mice really appreciated a dry place to sh*t. Not under it but thru ALL the drawers.
thats rough! yeah I was tired of digging to find stuff. If youre looking to upgrade. I do have plans for this
the comedy in the editing was hilarious and the information and instruction was great. just subbed.
Love the color. Stylish but industrial! Great build!
Learnt some new tricks for cabinet making. Thanks Kev
Great work.
It turned out brilliant.
Well done young man.
Great video! I'll be making this for sure. I appreciate your usage of the Sketchup model also it made it clearer what parts were being created. Also I use Sketchup for all of my designs also. Again nice job!
Some of the best editing I’ve seen, great project and video! Success is just a matter of time.
With all of those ball bearing slides, this must be a high budget project.
yep, youd be right. Slides arent cheap but I did buy in bulk. Theres cheaper ways but thats what I wanted on mine
Solid points for including minions.
great work. I need this in my workshop.
Great job sir. Looks outstanding
Awsome....love the castor idea to move around when needed
Great workmanship.
Go Blue!! Great design. Great video. Totally going to use your design as a base for mine. Thank you for putting together this video. Love the channel.
Thanks andy! Would love to see the final result! Tag me on insta and Go Blue!
@@KevBotWorkshop I will! I have a steel rod desk project and a BBQ/pizza oven island project ahead of workshop projects, but I’ll definitely tag you. Thanks again!
learned more in this video than any (all) the others.
I subscribed mostly because I like how you are all business and don't waste time with fluff. There is an incredible amount of information in your 15 minute video. Much appreciated!
Well done! Looking forward to plan availability
Looks great, love that blue!
Thanks Ryan! Im definitely gonna be using it again
Excellent project, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
My pleasure!
Great design, and build project!
Well done!
Thank you very much!
I really like that color.
great video , just what i was looking for. great job
I’d love to get the plans too. Plus I’m sure your sister is happy to get your tools out of her drawers!
Haha dont tell it went in the trash!
Thanks for the video. Advice requested. I used to build custom furniture professionally in the 80's for a few years. When I stumbled upon your video I remembered that I still need to build a large "Map" style storage cabinet for my radio control airplane workshop. The interior of the drawers need to be about 60" wide and 36" deep but only 3" and 5" in height. They will hold larger scraps for fiberglass, kevlar and carbon fiber cloth, sheets of mylar, plastic vacuum bagging material and paper plans for radio controlled aircraft. Picking your brain, I have no have no Idea how to successfully build such large but shallow drawers and keep them from sagging over time. Thanks...
Great video and build.
Oh...I LIKE THAT
This is BADASS!!!
I plan on making cabinets like this for my garage, but not mobile. I also plan on doing some type of butcherblock top for mine, so I can abuse it without worrying about destroying it.
I really like the idea of doing a bunch of thinner drawers too.
O I absolutely get that! I dont plan to work on this much so i didnt make it with space to clamp or anything. If I wanted to, I could just replace the top some day. The thinner drawers though.. huge space saver
They look really good. Top job
Brilliant!!! Greetings from Chile!
Fantastic work, dude! Nicely done! 😃
I just subscribed!!!
Merry Christmas! Have a FANTASTIC 2021! And stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Thanks Oliver! Welcome aboard!
Me too.
Great design and build. Thanks.
Glad you like it!
Wow! Beautiful!!
This wasn't even organized madness 😭🤣 The new storage unit looks wonderful! 😍
it was chaos.. and it had to go. GOOD RIDDANCE!
Perfect sir 🎉 thank you.
Most welcome
This is great I now have an alternative then metal or plastic. Thanks for doing this.
Sure thing Harvey I did it just for you! Happy Holidays
Some nice drawer tricks here!
That dresser system you had was pretty solid, not sure why you'd even consider a change! Seriously though, great build, especially the camera work and editing.
You're right I should go fish it out of the trash and put the tools back! haha
Nice build. I normally don't like to paint on wood but that came out really nice!
Me to vintauri, but i saw something similar online and thought it looked super slick. No regrets here
looks great. Looking for your plans when you release them :) After building all our stores cabinetry with 3/4" pre-finished white birch, I had to run everything one and done as there was no cover up finish work. For that bottom upper toe kick, I'd run front to back bottom shelving and that toe kick plate would sit all the way to the top of the 3.5" cut out, supporting the shelf. I like your method as it saves material and you have drawers anyways. Thought I'd give you an alternate if you ever want to leave that open and have a bottom shelf.

awesome, sweet build
That intro! Loved it!
Glad you liked it!
Great job 👍
Your videos are awesome!!!
Beautiful!
I bought used blueprint cabinets that hold items 2 inches... usually on their side. They are full depth drawers on ball bearing rollers.. and 48x48 inches. You can get these SUPER quality files for cheap or free on Craigslist, etc. You can stand in the drawers without buckling. You can stack units on other units without loss of strength or function. For larger storage I bought steel storage cabiners with many different sizes and shapes. You can buy super quality used ones for $50 each from junkers. Buy some Harbor Freight wheels to put under them and you have cabinets that are as good as Snap On for PENNIES on the dollar. I have 25 blueprint drawers and 100 steel drawer cabinets on 100 or so wheels. I didnt spend $2000 for EVERYTHING.
Dude that’s beautiful
Hey, great video and great build. Really well put together video, wish you much luck with your channel 👍
Thanks James! I just subbed to you
Love the edits!
Great project. Would love to have one of these. Just found your channel. Looking forward to seeing what else you have done.
Thanks Angie! welcome! Im only just getting started on my channel. Stay tuned!
I will totally buy the plans.
Nice build....
Awesome video
This is a great build. I am going to try to build this with all the scrap wood in my garage. I think I have enough to build 4 or 5 of these things. That would be awesome. Plans or no plans you made such a good video I will just follow along the best I can and make the rest up as I go. Great tip on the drawer slides spacing.
Hoping for plans soon, have to wrap up some work first and I will get those out ASAP
Woohoo!!!
I wish you had dimensions in the plans I purchased. Saw review with same stress but he was going to watch video again and write down what dimensions he can. Shouldn't be necessary. Shines a dim light and a great production.
Nice job!
Thanks Jay!
Update still coming for the drawer organization? I love the way this turned out!
good job bro, nice solution
Super skills man and that is one amazing desk. I just wish I had all the tools to make it and then space to store this tools :-)
You dont need all the fancy tools, all of this can be done with a circular saw, drill, and pocket hole jig. It helps to have more but it can be done.
Very Nice Build
Thanks Mallet! and thanks for stopping by, Ill see you in your stream soon!
Nice U of M Clothes!

Really Nice Cabinet Too!
Go Blue, I live on the west side of state now
Thanks for sharing!
You betchya!
Brilliant video, can you link us to the sketchup file please? I'd love to build this for myself.
Greetings from the UK.

Its as if there's one for every Harbaugh loss. Go Bucks.
LoL... My son does this too. Got me chuckling...
Thanks for the video and plans (which I purchased). What size screws are you using to attach the drawer bottom to the drawer frame? In the video it shows a box of 1 1/4" but that seems too big for 1/2" ply? Thanks
Nice job❤
Thanks!
If anyone re-builds this i recommend installing the drawer slides while the wood pieces are still unassembled. There is a reason why IKEA does this. It´s much easier if everything is measured correctly. But given that he got them after building the cabinet his order of operations was justified.
Sure you can do that, as long as you're right with measurements. IKEA is all mass produced, cut by CNCs , takes out the human error. Ill continue to do it this way
Fantastic!!!
Pretty Badass, no one made comments on the polka dot shorts!!!
hahaha... they are mustaches THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Nicely done and GREAT tutorial !!

O. H. 😁
Ill let that second part slide only cause you started with kind words.... ;)
Just found your channel and subscribed! Great content. Go Blue! (Such a terrible FB season)
Lets not talk about it hahah basketball season is underway and I have a short memory. Thanks for the sub!
Nice hat. Go Blue.
Yessir Go Blue!
Great build! I'll definitely be building some shallow tool storage soon myself.
Youll love it. Highly recommend!
Just came across your channel, really nice video. Go Blue!
Go blue!
I am a Buckeye, and I just subscribed. It's been a LONG TIME since someone with an "M" on their hat has done any great coaching like you are doing KevBotWorkshop. And go Buckeyes!
@@richie4ohio we can all put our differences aside for some wood woodworking right? Eh we'll try anyways haha
I'm going back through and listen to what the dimensions are, I'll write them down and try to blue print
Great result! What pocket hole rig do you recommend buying? I saw some cheap ones on amazon & Co but those are probably not as easy to work with.
I have the kreg K4 pocket hole jig. If I were go back before I bought it, I would have looked into the "Auto-Jig" as you can quickly set up a a board in it
Very well done. What was your estimated total cost? With plywood thru the roof now, would it be comparable to purchase a Harbor Freight box? Love your build and it looks great, just a curiosity question. And nothing satisfies like saying "I built that"!
I wish this had been answered.
Good project.
FWIW as a professional- you can probably get away with 1/2” baltic ply drawer sides and 1/4” bottoms. You alluded to that at 9:00
With glue and stepped square joinery, I have a mechanic’s bottom chest on wheels the size of yours. I built it almost 25 years ago and even with a couple drawers full of ~100# + of steel jigs, hammer forms, and dollies I have never had a single failure other than a drawer pull I dropped a big maple plank on.
One thing about it: yours will last at least that well! :)
I prefer the narrower drawers as you mentioned; the idea of a toolbox is to access tools in an organized fashion, not stuff it full of stacked up stuff.
Nice color choice btw
Mine’s a tad more blue tone but yours looks familiar.
Thanks! And i fully agree about thinner ply. In my plans I made an adjustment for everyone to save some $ and make it weigh less. I still would probably not use 1/4 on the bigger drawers just my opinion cause I throw in there a router and sander and drill so the big drawers are a bit heavy, but yeah I see what you mean
Puedes subir el despiece gracias y muy buen trabajo
Awesome! Very professional looking cabinet. Nice work! Definitely agree that many shallow drawers are the way to go. Looking forward to the follow up video!
Game Changer in the shop. Gotta get used to which drawer the tools are in though
Great cabinet. I'm planning to build one like it soon. Hopefully the plans will be out before I start. My question is did you enclose the back?
I did not just to save money but I feel I will some day to keep dust out
Great job! BTW, at 9:55, one day that brad is going to turn and get your thumb.
Love this! Question however...why spend the extra money for nicer plywood if you're just going to paint it? I love the result and look but usually you get the nicer lumber to stain or varnish.
Mainly cause it’s paint grade. I could go cheaper but it’s more likely to have knots and imperfections and I just wanted it to look good.
What was your total cost for the plywood? Is 3/4 still about $100/sheet?
Hey Kev, I really dig this design and look forward to trying my hand at following your design once I move into a bigger space soon. I tried my best to replicate what you did in sketch up and made a cut list. I made a few adjustments just guessing at some of the dimensions and I wasn't able to get my cut list down to what you used but it's pretty close. I could post that up for you to give to other viewers who also want to try this out if you're interested. Didn't want to hop on your channel and just put your designs out there without permission :p
Thanks alex, but im gonna have plans for sale really soon
Go Blue!
09:54 Dangerous thumb placement :o
I AINT AFRAID!
Kevin - Check the jig you made for the screw holes for your handles - the handles are crooked.
Question- why did you use pocket hole screws for the drawers, when they have false fronts so conventional screws would not be seen? Instead the sides have those big holes showing. Is there some advantage? Cannot be strength, the 1/2" bottoms will add all that is needed.
Pocket holes give more strength while screwing straight into plywood endgrain isnt as stong and can cause the layers to split
Man, 4 sheets of baltic birch plywood costs like $1500usd here in Norway now. almost cheaper to use solid wood!
Sorry brother! use whatever you can!
I love it!!! And actually Majolica Blue is the accent color I have in my home. How much did you spend building it?
Tough to say as I bought during covid prices and didnt keep receipts. Price wouldnt be so bad if there wasnt a lumber AND hardware cost
best drawer slides for this? Link for the Rockler casters? Just downloaded the plans. I look forward to the build.
links are in the description. Happy building!
How thick was the spacer used for the drawer slides? (Video time 12:33)
Can you share the SketchUp design file? Nice looking design.
I love this so much. How well does it work as a work bench as well?
I didnt really make it to be a work bench, so I just kinda use it to place things, but as Im writing up the plans right now Ill making a note that if you wanted more of a workbench to make it a little bit bigger so you can clamp down etc.
Thank you! Fantastic job btw
