I was setting up my new packouts and was thinking kaizan foam, but the price scared me away. I went to Harbir Freight and got some foam floor mats. A roll that was big enough to get 5 layers was about $10. Worked perfsct for a fraction of the cost.

I almost didn't watch this because I didn't think I needed the custom foam inserts tier of organizing, but I'm glad I did. The 3d printing one with the brackets is my favorite because it can be changed up. Great video!

i like your results with the kaizen foam, i would also add some half circles on the handles so you can put your fingers into there and grab tools easier.

Those 3d printed bins turned out awesome, but I love the look of the Kaizen foam! I could see myself printing a bin that fills the entire drawer just so I could pretend to be this organized 😆

I suggest using a contrasting color (maybe green, in your case) as the base for the Kaizen foam. It makes it very obvious that a tool is missing.

With the thin poplar strips I did something quite similar. I used 5mm luan floor underlayment and cut 3-1/2" strips and made slotted dividers to go under a hinged workbench top. The bottom of the 2X4's have a sheet of luan so there's a nice storage area under the top for screw guns, jig saw, batteries, drill bits, pocket hole jigs, table saw blades, glue, router bits, etc.

For the foam cutouts I use eva foam interlocking tiles and cut them with a laser cutter.
I draw around the tools on some graph paper then photograph it. Using the graph paper to scale the photo to the correct size, then grab the outline with inkscape. Export to svg and it goes straight in to lightburn.

Very nice! I can see many of these ideas making their way into my own shop storage, pretty soon in fact!
And a tip, for those small parts bins with the really tiny things like small washers, I don't know about you, but my fingers have a hard time picking those small parts out of that corner space between the sides and bottom, forcing me to reach for the needle nose pliers, shop tweezers or something with a magnet. So I made mine scoopable, like a change bin in a cash drawer. It can be something as simple as ripping a small strip with a 45 degree bevel from a piece of scrap and gluing it into that bottom corner space of the bin. Or another option is to rip one-fourth of a piece of appropriate-diameter pvc tubing, then sand down the back/outside of the 2 cuts so that the inside curve feathers into the bottom and side of the bin. I've also seen a flexible pre-molded 'caulk' strip with adhesive backing that goes around the tub that could work. Or for that matter, some actual caulk would do the trick, and put whatever curve you want in it (of course, that wouldn't harden immediately, and its flexible consistency might itself trap some items). Anything really with a flat bevel or concave curve to fill the corner where the smaller parts can get trapped and hard to pick out, and has 2 edges that feather into the bottom and side of the box.
Thanks again for the great video!

    Such cool ideas. Thank you!
It would be a lot less simple, but you could stack the Kaizen foam. Sandwich the tool between two foam layers, spray-adhesive the top foam to some 1/8" sheet good, repeat until you get to the top layer of foam. You could do nylon rope handles to lift each layer out. And you can also skip the adhesive depending on how you design each layer.

Kaizan foam comes (free) with many electronic and other packaging. It's not always going to be the perfect size for the drawer, but cut and glue a few pieces together, and you're good to go.
Also, you've mentioned how you can't stack the foam trays (04:09), but provided a way to do so at the end of the video: sliding trays (13:22).
If you make your sliding tray so that it fits INSIDE the drawer, (sliding on thin strips fixed to the drawer's sides), then you could make more that will fit each into the next larger tray, creating a stack of nested sliding trays.
Designed properly, this setup could allow the removal of several trays together, for easy access to one of the lower trays, and labeling at the top would make searching for an item quick and easy.
    Thanks for the video.

I was searching for a way to organize my tool box drawers and tried kaizen foam but the cost was too high. I stumbled upon the foam floor mats from HF and used a razor knife to cut them to drawer size. I then arranged my tools face side down and backwards in a suitable orientation. I used a Kaizen marker with a long skinny neck to trace each piece. Once all were outlined I moved them aside and used my Dremel with the router attachment to cut just inside each outline. I laid the foam on top of a couple layers of cardboard so I could cut all the way through. Once you figure out which direction of travel works best (clockwise or counter) stick with it to avoid wandering. I used a headlamp for extra light and a shop vac for catching the debris. I got 8x11 sheets of very thin fluorescent foam from the hobby store and used 3M Super 77 to adhere it to the smooth back of the foam. Whenever a tool is missing there is a very visible indication that it’s out of its place. I did 5 drawers for about $30 total. It was much faster and cheaper than Kaizen for this application.

  • @MarcRitzMD

If you have a router, then then the poplar-slat divider thing would allow you to just make regularly spaced slots. Then you have flexibility to change division size

The 3D printed brackets to me, would act as a clamp. Cut pieces to fit, add glue, press into 3D printed part, and once glue dries you could essentially remove the brackets and have a solid enough, no fastener, drawer organizer. The parts themselves are reusable in this application.

    • @Fixthisbuildthat

For the 3d printed bins, there now exists something called “Gridfinity” it’s the same thing, but free and open source

Do you recommend the i3 printer? Do you use the basic unit?

I walk away with many jewels of information after watching all of your videos. Do you feel that the AnyCubic i3 Mega S 3D printer is more than adequate for what you need to fabricate or do you recommend the AnyCubic MEGA X?

I've been happy with it so far. The build plate is a bit smaller for some large stuff I've wanted to do. So the Mega X would help. But Mega S is a good starter
