I’ll be honest with you Scott. I have never found a channel before where I’ve been so sad and disappointed to discover they don’t have a huge backlog of videos to binge. I’ve started just straight up watching your videos multiple times. They’re incredibly well produced and the content is absolutely top tier. Can’t see a scenario going forward where your channel doesn’t become insanely popular.

For real! I was admiring all those masked transitions, and when he reached from the front I was taken aback! I watched that clip frame by frame-more than once :)
A more detailed breakdown of how you went from the reference photo to having precisely-measured and space-optimized slots would be cool, how you carved out the shapes with rounded edges and sliced the files with the progressively denser infill. Also how did you precisely measure the curve of the scissor handles? I do everything in Tinkercad and it's all I know how to use because using shapes to carve out other shapes makes sense to me, but is extremely limiting and not aesthetic.
@@dhmclean Yup, me too, would be nice to see in-depth vid on measuring from reference photographs (I know that u can calibrate your canvas in Fusion if you know exact size of something on photo, but maybe there is more to it).
@@1ronman I've calibrated a photo and done basic modeling from a photo, but what I want to know how to do it to be able to take an object and have it be "cradled" in a holder. Molded into place sort of. He does that a lot here.
@@dhmclean You could try using photogrammetry to make a model of the item and use it as a boolean to subtract the shape out of the container. A lot of work though lol and the tolerances may be too tight. In the beginning of the video he speeds over modeling from a photo so most likely he just used the sketch from the reference and extruded in -maybe added some wiggle room first- and then added a bevel to the edges.
A few days ago, I was also thinking how those bits holders are annoying. Your solution with magnets is genius! I'll have to make something similar for myself as well. :)

This is really cool! It appears that a lot of thought and effort was put into solving some of everyday gripes at the heart of your workflow and further customized to suit your needs. I find this is inspiring, something very much worth considering for anyone who owns a 3D-printer. Personally I would be a little concerned about making the modules too specific to certain items (although the perfect fits are nothing to scoff at, very satisfying to look at), as their items eventually wear out/get upgraded/etc. and may no longer fit, however it does appear that you have already considered this, as the design approach is very modular and the tips you provided to reduce filament usage will make this issue quite neglectable on the grand scale of things.

Can I just say how underrated it is that you shared the reality of your project at the end. You can use any 3d modeling software that exports STL files. Sketchup is free and can get you going. Measuring simply comes down to pulling out your ruler and angle.

I’ve been living by the motto of productive procrastination for years and this is the first time I’ve heard someone else say it / talk about it, so interesting because I thought I was the only one using that term, for me it’s always been: if I don’t feel like editing or animating one morning rather than playing video games or watching TV I’ll use that time to interior design my living room or organise / clean my office
@@Peter-jt3de First layers take a long time, especially with big flat surfaces like that. I wouldn't be surprised if it saved over 20% of the printing time
@@Abhyuday_rai in the Cura print settings it's under Shell > Bottom Layers. If you don't see the settings you'll need to click the ⚙️ icon and search for that setting to enable it. Bottom Thickness setting will also work
3d printing revives these ancient instincts of just building stuff and it's highly satisfactory and rewarding. I'm sure these 3d prints took an eternity but this basically changes everything. I spend most of my time in my room and should have my things organized like that.
I'm wondering for a while now: how do people film the 3D-printing timelapes like this? Is there a "timelapse" setting on the printer so the head moves to one spot after every layer? it really looks like magic
By default, no. If you use software like octoprint or similar they have timelapse features/plugins that do snap a photo at the same position every layer. Moving the print head away every layer does come with some quality degradation though.
@@TheAnoniemo As a side note, the quality degradation is mostly related to either printers that haven't been tuned well (temps too high, retractions too slow, etc) resulting in stringing during the print head moving away, or bowden setups resulting in the same thing. It's entirely possible to print something with and without octolapse and still have the same quality on a decent printer.
Thank y'all for the helpful answers! But you also need your camera settings synced to that specific time to take a picture, but the printer doesn't always take the same amount of time for eaah layer, right? Or is the camera somehow connected to the printer?

They use an application called Octoprint. It does pretty much exactly what you described.

Octoprint makes it easy. There's also slicer plugins that will move the head to a specific position after every layer.
