  • The Clippers lost Paul George in free agency and are rolling into their new arena with James Harden and Kawhi Leonard leading the way. This could be a horrible season for the Clippers and this is a look at what that means for the franchise going forward.

As a Toronto fan, I continue to be in AWE at how lucky the team got when it came to Kawhi. 1 season, where he was relatively healthy, AND had a major chip on his shoulder, and they won the title. Then he leaves, and he's been injury prone pretty much since. It was the ultimate "Right place at the right time" scenario.

Kawhi is not a player worth trading away your future for, especially in his 30s. It’s a prime example of why you should never be a prisoner of the moment, they were so focused on his raptors finals run, that they ignored every other red flag. It didn’t help that the costar they brought in to ply with him had a history of injuries too (PG)
Harden was never supposed to be a star on the clippers, they brought him in to do what he did in Philly when he led the league is assists his last season there and helped embiid win an MVP. Even if Embiid stayed healthy, he isn't Jokic in the playoffs at all. For being bigger and more athletic than Jokic, he is a big p***y basically and plays for foul calls. When those calls don't happen in the playoffs his numbers drop significantly and he isn't anywhere near MVP level. Just a big flopper and whines to the refs when he doesn't get his way, a lot like Lebron but at least Bron isn't the center on his team sticking out like a sore thumb. He still sticks out tho

I think it's kind of weird how we all seem to talk about it like Kawhi was part of the trade. I know, Kawhi clearly set it in motion with his demand the Clips sign another all-star, and even tried his own recruiting sales pitch to PG and KD, among others presumably. But he had nothing to do with the actual composition of the trade. I think it's incorrect to judge the trade as if Kawhi was involved because they were negotiating with OKC for PG alone. (OKC didn't have rights or anything at all to do with Kawhi, period, so whatever they got out of that trade was for PG.) The truth: The trade was outright robbery by OKC which Clips knew but *accepted* because they were desperate to win favor with Kawhi. It was not a smart move in terms of developing a team, it was a Hail Mary, "all-in" gamble which came up very short.

The Warriors in 2022 when they won the championship started the season with an 18-2 record without Klay Thompson and finished the season the 3rd seed. They had Steph Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Jordan Poole, Draymond Green and Kevon Looney starting. On paper, that wasn't one of the top 5 talented teams in the league at that time, (Clippers, Lakers, Suns, Grizzlies, Mavericks, Bucks, Celtics) but the Warriors starters all complemented each other well and a couple of key bench pieces with Otto Porter and Gary Payton. 1 superstar, 1 star, and great complementary players is the formula. This year's Celtics, 2023 Nuggets, 2022 Warriors, 2021 Bucks
The Warriors letting go of Klay (who was the reason they got killed in the play in against the kings) and adding a ton of elite, high level role players make this year's roster REALLY similar to that 2022 one. If Wiggins plays like, 70-80% of the level he played at when the won in 2022, Draymond keeps is head straightened on, and one of their young players break out, they are arguably a top 4 seed and a low chance at a deep playoff run. I don't think all of these things happen, but if 2 out of 3 of those things happen, they are low seeded playoff team.

Correction, Clips offer PG 3 years 110. PG was disingenuous when talking about his contract. He omitted his opt in $ when talking about his contract negotiation, but sneakily included it in Kawhi's signed extension. Also that 2/60 was before Harden, Clips slowly increased the offer as soon as they got Harden which was 4 games into the season. I'm actually glad he is gone, it was getting increasingly difficult to defend him with all the stuff he was saying to the media. I didn't realize he has a weak mentality for a star his caliber. Trez and Patbev even said, you gotta approach PG differently when you are about to call him out for missed rotations.
Historically, Clips at better at retooling the roster than developing their picks. They'll be fine.
