As a German I find it interesting and almost touching how quickly you felt the emotions of this song without understanding the lyrics. Till basically plays a creepy sandman who controls kids by bringing them nightmares. The interesting thing is that he is not only evil but feels pain in doing so which is why "his heart burns". So the song is about inner conflicts like many Rammstein songs (e.g. Deutschland). But why is he an evil sandman? Was he a victim himself? I think in this song he is offender and victim at the same time.
not necessary evil, more like anti hero. we were (and still are) taught about good and evil, black and white, good and bad, zero and one, but reality is somewhere in between. Took me good two decades to "un learn" most of "cultural appropriate" knowledge that we were taught in school.
funny fact. You do writes/speacks just like in my language, just using English words (btw I'm Russian)
Till Lindemann once again shows his theatrical talent, his whispering, his chanting, every hair on me - a native speaker - stands up, a shiver floods through my body, almost every syllable, how he whispers, how he talks, everything, simply everything gives off that bad feeling of latent danger lurking in the dark, ready to pounce but hasn't come out yet - a real "Lindemann performance"!
Many fans interpret the figure in this song as evil because he looks like a devil (and in fact, he is one). Personally, I don’t think he is evil at all. He burns the griefs and the fears of children in his own hart, suffering for them every night. However, if people would see him, they would not be thankful, but fearful. It makes him a lonely and tragic figure. Even when he tries to smile to show his good nature, he doesn’t succeed. He will always remain a devil after all.
I love that you were one of the few that picked up on this tragedy. Not understanding the language helped you, because it made you rely on the music.

It's no surprise that the character Till portrays here is considered evil. The Charakter in the Clip is a mixture of two different myhological Figures. On the one hand, the more well-known sandman, who brings sleep with his sand. On the other hand, the much older figure of the "Alp", which is clearly more dominant. The Alp is a malevolent parasitic dark spirit or dark elf that brings bad dreams, and is still present in the german word for nightmares, "Alptraum".
In the clip Till embodies the "Alp" who lures children and gave them his "sand" so that they sleep. Then other evil creatures can come and bring nightmares and harvest the tears of the victim to sustain the Alp. But his power and his existence will end with the dawn of day. The Alp knows this and his voice become more and more desperate when the new day comes closer.
@@drakon5076 Oh, thank you, I did not know about Alps. In Dutch folklore they don’t exist (anymore?). I already saw a link with the angel from ‘Engel’, because in that song too, Rammstein appears to change the characteristics and symbolism of a well-known character. Maybe I was wrong about the Alp. I really love discussing symbolism, but unfortunately RUclips isn’t a very suitable platform for that.

Alp is an old word for Elf, Alb or Elb, the term differs from region to region. Elves in old folklore are not necessarily benevolent or good creatures. As far as I know in english the part "-mare" from the word Nightmare (dutch Nachtmerrie, old german Nachtmar) comes close and the meaning is in each language "evil spirit/ghost".
The Sandman in contrast is a rather new character from the 19. century romanticism and is influenced to some point by greek mythology.
The Song Engel toys basically with the massive missmatch of "knowing" and "believing" and that no one knows for sure the true intention of "God".
I totally agree, this Sandman seems to me more like a tormented battered soul who wants to protect the children but is abused, tortured and forced by the dark beings to endure whatever suffering these beings bring to the children (.. .press them in my cold veins), brilliantly portrayed with the smile gradually freezing and turning to fear. This is a different approach than in the official video
Till is using a thing called "Theatersprache" or theatre language. Back in the day, where there were no microphones, you had to speak loud and clearly so the audience could understand you. So, if you wanna pronounce a "R", it makes this rolling sound.
BTW: as far as I know, Till's parents were both theater actors 😉
It begins as kind of lullabye about the sandman. He's speaking with kids! It's a variation of the intro to the tv show "Sandmännchen". Then it turns into a sad song, expressing pain and sadness. The piano does a great job to support that vibe.

It also borrows from "Der Sandmann" by E. T. A. Hoffmann, where the Sandmann is a twisted legendary creature who steals the eyes of children who won't go to sleep.
True, I see him, looking at the lyrics, as a supernatural creature that feeds on the tears of children (injecting them in his cold veins) and in order to get the tears he and his ilk give them nightmares, but apparently it's not a process he enjoys. I love at the end, just before it goes completely dark, you see smoke escaping from the pit as if he dissolves and evaporates as a spirit. Fantastic song. Keep hearing by the way that Till actually inflicted the wounds on his body on purpose or is that bs?

Hey there,
the "rolling R's" that Till does when performing is a technique called "Voiced alveolar trill" which is used in opera and lots of theatrical appearances way back in the day and still find's its way in modern opera sometimes. So it's not a normal thing in the german language to roll the R's. But we have regions with specific dialects in Germany where the R's are rolled more than in the official German language. Sidenote: Rammstein was (and is) often criticized for using that technique because Hitler did that when speaking in public to make his speeches more appealing and captivating. (Which sadly worked)
Oh, and lots of Rammsteins tracks (or in general german sentences) can be translated in multiple ways. "Mein Herz brennt" can translate to "my heart burns" as well as "my heart is in flames" and "my heart is on fire", which somehow has slightly different meanings. :) In this case "my heart burns" seems as the correct translation for it.

Hey.. Yeah, Hitler did it a little bit, but most of the most known speeches weren't done by A.Hitler, but by H.Himmler.. and he rolled it even harder. That's what most people remember.
Rolling Rs is part of most germanic languages in same dielects or regions. Not a "technique" to them. It's just have they speak

@@vornamenachname9905 he does definitely overemphasize it. But you can still hear rolling Rs in the german language sometimes. In my own language "Afrikaans" it's all over the place. We use it all the time. And it's one of the germanic Origin languages
Not only is Till a superb singer and lyricist, he's also a published poet.
The rolling "r" was mostly used in songs around 1900, also in the upcoming radio commentaries. Till uses it a lot, it´s part of the Rammstein sound/style. In the normal speech it won´t be used at all - however, some non-native german speakers, especially from eastern countries do it sometimes as well. It´s also often heard in the southern german Bundesland Bavaria, especially the "Franken" do it (region around Nuremberg).
As recommended before, you should check out "Zeit", it´s really a masterpiece, in my opinion.
He is just a real artist.....that's the word you're searching for ...btw a very underrated artist :-)
What Rammstein and Till are doing is art for me. You dont understand the language, but you are still getting that there is a story...

Anyone still criticising your pronunciation of Rammstein is a stickler for detail. That will do fine. Yes, there is an accent, but so what, who doesn't have a hint of accent in a foreign language.
Well, she relapsed to the "American" pronunciation at the end. 🙂 I think the reason a lot of Americans do this is because that's how names with the "stein" ending are typically pronounced there; it's a Yiddish influence, not German.

You are absolutely right. German is my native language. And because of the way I use my mouth to speak German (it feels very "static"), I have a lot of trouble with pronunciation in other languages. My brain knows exactly what to do, but my body can't work with it 😂

@@tobiasschremmer9823 I know German too. I think you misunderstood. I know it's a German word. The point is that many names like that came to the US with Jewish immigrants, and the Yiddish pronunciation is different, so that's what most Americans are used to hear.
On pronunciation, the simplest thing is listening to the song "Rammstein." It isn't one of their most popular so you can feel free to just pull it up and watch Till play with fire. ;)

Theatrical German (which would be used by actors on stage in a a theatrical play/performance) uses the "rolled R", for the audience to hear pronounciations of certain German words better at distance, such as the back of the audience, etc. The Charismatic voice gave a more precise description of the "rolled R" in one of her Rammstein reactions (I think the one for this same video). You've got to admit it also sounds cool, too.

Rammstein is brilliant at using the piano.
This version of "Mein Herz Brennt" is SO intense.
But if you want to hear that piano again, please react to their track "Deutschland". It tells the story of Germany, featuring Germania, the mother of Germany, right through history.
The track, and certainly the video, are absolutely spectacular. But if/when you watch it, please let the end credits run to the very end. The credits feature a piano version of another brilliant track, "Sonne", and is sadly sometimes missed in reactions.
Rammstein is an amazing group with lyrics more deep than most would think.
Seeing as you like interesting vocals, i must recommend you check the band "Heilung". With Maria Franz beautiful voice and Faust's throat singing you are up for a treat. As for songs to react to, i'd say to start with "Krigsgaldr", "In Maidjan" or "Anoana".

When you wondered whether it is the language or the performance that makes the language sound so soft (contrary to the demeanor): It is a major misconception that many people have in their minds that German is a harsh, brute language. Quite the opposite is true. The German language is simply incredibly complex and multifaceted, and Till Lindemann plays with it perfectly by being able to pronounce harsh words softly and gentle words harshly 🙂

Cool reaction :) This song, as many Rammstein songs, is hard to get, even if you are German. So its out of the perspective of the German „Sandmann“, which is known by Germans as a small man, who comes in the evening (literally in German TV) and throws sleeping sand into the eyes of children, which makes them tired so they can sleep well. We tell children, that this is the reason why you can rub sand(-like stuff) out of the edges of your eyes in the morning. But like with many German story’s, there’s a more brutal background, which even most Germans don’t know anymore (which is the stuff Rammstein likes). The „Sandmann“ is also a demon-like creature, which gives children nightmares and comes to those, who don’t want to sleep in the night, throws the sand in the eyes of the children so it rips out the children’s eyes and then feeds them to his children (which have beaks), which nest in the moonsickle. Rammstein took the intro phrase of the „good Sandmann“ in the opening of the song: „Nun liebe Kinder, gebt fein acht“., but mainly talks from the perspective of the „bad Sandmann“.
Yes, and also the Bad Sandman in this Song seems to regret what he has to do but can't help it. So he is more sad than cruel.
It's like he's given the role that he has to do in making people go to sleep and potentially have nightmares but he finds it abhorrent, so he literally tears his own heart out for it to become the returning sun so they also wake up. Kind of a messianic figure at the end.
Rammstein are one of the most intelligent musicians out there, especially combined with Till's voice and personality. Calling that vibe Evil would just make me feel sorry how hollow and shallow people can judge! It's like the Stanley Kubrick's movies,you simply let them go throu you and don't expect any residual thought ,just feelings
This video has always been a fascinating one for me. No big production like a lot of Rammstein's other videos. Instead, it's more intimate and close. It's a lone piano filling the air, and a lone singer in a darkened, nearly empty room. The vibe created is almost like a sad horror film, with Till dressed and done up in a very Kabuki-like way, looking like a tortured Japanese lore-inspired spirit visiting you and giving you its message, before they fade and leave (an idea that's really pushed by the faint wisp of smoke at the very end of the video that's seen leaving the T-shaped hole in the floor, as the camera is panning up). It's also a more emotional take on the song, which adds to the atmosphere even more. Plus, you gotta love the creepy innocence of the smiles Till gives, which contrast with the horrific appearance of the makeup used on him.
It's a very different video for Rammstein. And yet, it's still Rammstein from beginning to end.

oh my god, you are at the absolute beginning of the rammstein rabbithole. to understand this piano version you should watch the official video also. and again, it really doenst matter what version you are watching of a rammstein video. life or studio, both are always insane. most are worth to watch and listen to in both versions. please dont stop to react to them because you would miss a memory in your life. und please try to pronounce the "A" in the german way. same for the "E".

It is at least partly the language. The 'purr' is the natural rolling r in Germanic languages. It is also a little known fact that the most direct translation of the title is "My Heart Burns.'" It is basically a love song as are most of their songs in some way, especially in their early days. Their first album translate as "Heartache" and for all their sonic brutality "Mutter" is "Mother" and "Du Hast" is either "You Have" or "You Hate" Till slurring the syllables just enough to make it difficult to tell which.
So this is the piano version of the song, there is also a regular version of the song with a great video as well. Maybe you wanna check that out too!
My best guess to write the pronunciation is "Rumshtyne" with a German (or Spanish) R sound
The lyrics seem to invoke the mythical figure of the Sandman. The costume, and especially the makeup in this video are *very* reminiscent of Neil Gaiman's character the Sandman.
Did you know that Till is so dedicated to realism that the wounds on his arms and torso are real?! I was told this, I'm not sure if it's true but knowing how much off a perfectionist Till is to a point he is dry difficult to work with, it wouldn't surprise me if it were true!
It's true and they were made just for the video. He still has the scars.
The scars on Till's body are from an accident with the angel wings. He lost his balance and fell into the metal wings.

Rammstein is one of my fav bands, hope you continue to react to other songs of the band. I will recomend also another music for you to react. My favorite performance and the best solo you will ever experience. Pink Floyd - comfortable numb (live PULSE 1994).
Love this song. I literally stumbled upon it during my talent show period: a singer in The Voice Georgia does an incredible cover of this song, probably even more likable to me then the original.

This whole album IMO was probably their best, great stories, fun accompanying music videos and an absolute amazing touring show, this era was definately the top of my concert list. Sonne and Ich Will were my favorites from Mutter.

They are great live but their official video's are works of art, in this one when Till does that smile you can see the sadness, pain and emotion in his eyes even though he is "smiling" This performance is super. Please check out some of the older Rammstein videos and of course the new ones Zeit, Adieu, Deutschland, are fantastic.

If you want to do other Rammstein videos, i suggest getting a video with good english captions, because the lyrics matter a lot. "Angst" would be a good choice, it is relatively clear in the message and the way colors are used, yet extremely well produced.
Being open to interpretation is sort of a trademark of theirs. Other recurring features are cultural references and references to their own body of work, visual puns or visualized figures of speech, the stories are often told from an unusual perspective, the videos have always been (considering their budget at the time of production) absolutely great, nothing is by chance.

One thing that really drives home the pain and emotion that Til expresses in this piece is, that if you've ever seen the "making ofs" and behind the scenes of their music videos and performances, it's that it's that the emotion and effects are real: In their words; "very real, very Rammstein." The cuts on Til's body in this video are real, and you can see him in newer pictures and stage performances with the exact same scarification in the exact pattern of them here, or on Google, you can find images of him recovering from these cuts. To express this song vocally, but also physically with those cuts is a whole other level of pain and suffering. I definitely recommend looking at their making ofs in free time--you learn a lot about the 'why' behind their pieces.

Think of it as "Rahm shtine". Usually, you pronounce the second vowel in German when there are two together, so my last name Reischl, is "Rye shl"
A very thoughtful reaction. I'm glad you looked for the translation. My family emigrated to the US from Bavaria (Bayern) around 1880. It's the southernmost German state. It is not uncommon to roll r's somewhat there, although the band is not from there, I guess it is more of a theatrical thing Till is doing. I love this band.

This video is still one of my top reasons I think Till should be a Bond villain in an upcoming movie.
This version of the song destroyed me and rebuilt me thousand times the first time I heard it. Look for English translation,but it's still so enigmatic and personal... I really needed to look for someone's reaction, that is not the regular Rammstein fan. For me personally this is a song that I would dedicate to my sweet daughter,for whom I would rip my burning heart out of my chest,just to keep the dark away while she's sleeping. This is how I understand that version of the song : If I have to guard you in the darkest hour,I'll have to terrify the demons. This is one of the most meaningfully scary and beautifully composed songs ever! The controversial feelings it brings could be interpreted in million ways,none of them is right or wrong. I'm not really a fanboy of Rammstein,but they are POWER,and how you understand them is really personal and intimate. Even their usual songs. But this one is something entirely different

The purring is a typicle dialectal tone in the region of germany he is from. In germany we say that the "roll the R".
In German languagel, the "tongue - R" is mostly used in theater, opera and other professional speaker professions.
That way to pronounce the "R" was more prominent in the past. Today, many people pronounce the "R" in the back of the throat.

It is a song about nightmares. The entering theme is the theme of a german children Show " the little sandman" that's on german TV telling bedtime stories to children wishing them good dreams. But as the music progresses the theme gets heavier and turns into dark spheres symbolizing nightmares.
