There's simply no band as Rammstein. They're absolutely on another level on every aspect.

The breakdown in this song is sick. Two areas I interpreted differently (and that’s the beauty of Rammstein; there are so many ways you can interpret their music): 1- in the breakdown where they start shooting the tv’s; if you notice, you’ll see that each of their cameras is pointed toward their neighbor, and you’ll catch on Paul’s tv that he sees Richard with his gun. My interpretation there is each of them is so fearful that they turn on each other, so them shooting the tv’s is them attacking each other, essentially. 2- at the end where Till destroys the tv and the color comes back; I interpreted that to be them deciding to stop listening to the propaganda being fed to them (whether it be by the media, government, whatever). So, each time he hits the tv a little bit of color comes back, like the fog is being lifted and they are able to see clearly again and not be brainwashed with whatever was being fed to them. Very poignant video. Absolute masterpiece. Looking forward to your other reactions

Propaganda is much to trivial in this case. People call everything they dont agree to Propaganda nowadays. I would call it more be more open to the unknown, dont fall in fear reactions and think with your head before your feelings control you. Anger and hate can be scary and you can destroy everything if you let it rumble in a society. Social media dominates the news feeds and feelings sell better than facts today, so everyone fall for the trend. We see that socities get more and more violent and reasoning, critical talks are very difficult. We split in teams, like in the video black/white thinking, we or them. Modern societies have to learn again what connects all together, to be functional, but also to live in peace with eachother even if they dont agree on all fields. Populist leaders and every politician is not by all means evil, but you have to think who benefits from fear and hate.
Im german so im very afraid, that germany falls slowly back in racist times. Mostly extreme parties focus on feeding fear, hate and looking for every crisis to destabilise the country enough to get more votes and destroying our democratic state. Many people are much to willingly ignorant to oversee the other things they spit out here and then. All imigrant news get shared over social media and out of context to feed the narrativ. We have to be carefull in the future not to destroy, what many generations fought for.

The schwarzen mann most directly translates as the boogey man, a personification of general evil and such. But it also is very much a double meaning here with the literal translation of black man, as the candies they were eating at the end used to be called "N***** Kisses". The building of the wall is also quite poignant, as the band are all East Germans who grew up behind the wall being told it was to keep out the evil on the other side. And it all comes down to politicians pushing fear and xenophobia through media, so the rich people eating steaks in the darkness can get more rich by selling people things to sate their fears, not giving a crap that it destroys communities, because they can just do it again to other people.

Shortly before the video, there was a big discussion in Germany about a sweet called Negerkuss. this is the candy that the band end up eating on tv. At the same time there was the refugee problem in the mediterranean. I therefore interpret the message of the music video like this: to the Germans, stop getting in your way over sweets because of such unimportant shit as wörding and put down your fear of the refugees or do you want it to be as bad in Germany as it was in anyway America. Of course, the song is packed in the old German children's game, which I used to have to play in sports myself, but in the context of the zeitgeist in Germany at the time, I think it was an appeal to Germans not to deal with superficial wordings but to look for solutions for the real ones to look for problems caused by racism and to help foreigners.

Watching the video as well as lyrically, I interpreted it as the break down of society into its current state…Neighbors, community, friends, all become corrupted by the over exposure of media all the way to the current state…The cheerleaders are the outside forces encouraging and influencing people to behaviors of insecurity, and these are the ways to protect yourself, all before you turn on your neighbors because of the outside influences exposing you to fear and hate… Lyrically it’s more about how fear and hate are educated and influenced into us, that we’re not born that way, and as time goes on, the fear and the hate unfortunately gets stronger and scarier…
    Keep up the great reactions

I’m glad that you got that it was about “the other”, given that the literal translation is “black man”.
The imagery is heavily critical of America (though the leader resembles Boris Johnson): the lawn mowing the “perfect 1950s America”, the brick walls and security cameras representing distrust of “America’s neighbours” (South American/Mexican neighbours).
TV represents the media, rather than the internet specifically.
As the credits roll we see a mother and child that is more representative of the Middle East/Northern Africa rather than South American immigrants, bringing it back to Germany/Europe.
Indicating a pro-refugee stance, which fits with the black personification of Germania in Deutschland.

Here my interpretation - German from the same generation as the Rammstein band members:
    1. It about xenophobia and the intoctrination about this. Be afraid / beware of others. It helps to now that the West-German society was before the in recruitment of foreign workers from southern Europe very homogeneous. The situation in East-Germany until the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989/1990) was similar. There are some populistic polical forces / social media channels - better call them anti-social media - that draw on this fear.
    2. On the colours: A black and white view represents to separte the world into us and them. Overcoming the indoctrination (destroying the TV) make the world more colourful.
    3. On the colouts, part II: Red, White and Black are the flag colours of both the Nazi Regime and the German empire (.1871-1919).
    4. The chocolate stuff: Growing up in the 60ies and 70ies it was quite common to call them n... heads or n... kiss.

I interpret it as people being told by the media how to think and act, which creates fear and makes them shut themselves off. Also while Till Lindemann sings in the straitjacket, he and the other band members are wired, as if Till is spreading the fear in the media. The fact that color appears again at the end after Till destroys the television with a lawnmower supports my interpretation

Besides to the very interesting interpretations I read hear, I'd also consider the actual german situation (or the one of the last 8 years). In 2015 there was a big wave of refuges coming to Europe from the middle east (like Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and so on). Angela Merkel opened the borders to take more refuges per citizen into the country then most other European country's. Depending on the media, especially boulevard newspapers like "BILD", they agitated the citizens against this, especially because most refuges had darker skin colours, which could be like one of these provocative double meanings typical for Rammstein. I don't think, that's the whole core of the song, but it plays into it. Also the end scene does, because one can see two persons which fit pretty good in the look of these refuges, especially because they were often sitting in refugecamps (sometimes surrounded by these fences) and waiting under very bad conditions to get asylum somewhere here.

The video shows neighbors living happily together as an insane figure on TV dictates their 'reality,' gradually making them more paranoid of each other. This paranoia leads them to buy bricks to build walls that isolate them, barbed wire to prevent neighbors from 'trespassing,' and security cameras to watch each other. The fear escalates to the point where they all buy weapons, and, believing that they must 'shoot first' before their neighbors can shoot them, they create the chaos that ultimately leads them into the abyss. This is my interpretation of the symbolism in the video, which also reflects a chilling parallel to how fear and distrust can escalate in real life.

One key difference in my interpretation - It does seem they are shooting at the screens (which are showing one of their neighbours) but they don't actually hit them, all the shots hit the walls and the walls then cumble and their "homes" are destroyed. When it all caves in and they are falling in to the pit, it shows one of the screens falling with them and it's still in one piece. To me it seemed that they were so influenced by the messages of fear, division, distrust etc and in their desperation they destroyed what they were trying to preserve. This actually made me think of relationships rather than anything societal/political at first - if someone is scared of losing their partner to someone else their jealousy/paranoia often pushes their partner away - but it can apply to pretty much anything.

The story behind the video is very meaningful. From a young age, one was ingrained with fear of black men, such as the belief that all black men are heavily armed and want to harm you. If it gets late and you're still outside, the black man will come to get you, and so on. There is even a very popular children's game based on this, where you would shout: "Who's afraid of the black man?" (that's the refrain of the song) and then run away and not let yourself be caught. At the end of the video, a candy was eaten, which was called something like "Black Man's Kiss." The television was destroyed, which was progressively bringing back color, and the message behind it is to let go of black-and-white thinking, allow color into one's life, and set aside racism.

Ah, Rammstein has many great videos, but I think this is my favorite. Angst = Fear, and we see the cheerleaders, and the people behind them, stirring up Fear and profiting from it. Fear of the boogy man/black man, depending on how you translate it, and probably meaning both in this case. Sell them bricks, sell them guns. And the video is mainly in black and white and red, rather fascist colors, until the very end when Till smashes the TV and real colors return.

For me the video (supported by the lyrics) showing a happy neighborhood, where people talk to each other and are happy. But then they get sucked into the speeches of the mad man, who scare them. So they start isolating themselfs from the neighbors and from the outside. They even get scared of the neighbors they see on screen (not in real) and start to get freighten of them ending in violence. Knowing this happens to everyone they using more.
The pictures they use are more referring to the USA. I guess because it seems already more present there than in other countries, where this (can) happens to. Maybe also to address the american viewers more.
The other think is: They watsching refugees, surrounded by barbwire, who they are afraid of. While the refugees, who cant move and fear for their live/future seeing the others in a nice house with sweets scared of them.

In the words of the author of Dune, fear (angst) is the mind-killer. The suburbanites in this video acted on fear alone, protecting themselves from an imaginary threat, and that's what I think is the message here.

In my opinon (and according to some resources I've been looking into) this song is about a fear brought by propaganda and brainwash. In the beginnig all of the neiboughrs were friendly to each other. But then they watched something on their TVs and this something literally consumed them and brought them fear and paranoia. Neiboughrs bought bricks, rifles, cameras and started watching each other. They became so paranoid that they just shot their TVs. Also there was a moment where five people are sitting and cutting something like a steak, which is actualy reminding of a human brain. So this may symbolise rich and influential people manipulating and destructing other people's brains by propaganda. And the schwarzen Mann are like a symbol of fear. They are brought to the people like something strange and evil.

Here's my interpretation: we prop up madmen and broadcast them to the world. Those madmen spread fear (angst) by creating a boogeyman for us to be afraid of. In our fear, we buy items to protect us. We wall ourselves off from each other, and eventually destroy ourselves.
This is all encouraged by those who profit off of our fear (media, politicians, gun makers, etc, represented by cheerleaders). Our fear feeds the economy, and so they must perpetuate our fear.
The scene with the tvs sucking the faces of the band is to show how attached we are to media. The 50s American versions of the band is to show how happy we are in contrast to what we become when exposed to the media. The red cords show the way the madman's influence extends everywhere.

    • @davidm6329
      @davidm6329 Год назад

Adding on, the hollowed out/goopy versions of the band is what is left after everyone is finished manipulating us. The final scene with color returning after the TV is broken shows how reality returns without our connection to the madness. The way the refugees watching the band with the band watching the foreigners makes me think that scene is meant to show how we ourselves are just as much trapped and beset upon by the powers beyond our control, and breaking our connection to the media source helps to free us.
I personally think the intent behind the madman character is to portray Donald Trump, as he most suits the caricature presented based on common opinions of the man. But the madman can really represent any popular figure. Loads of people seek to use your fear for their own gains, but fewer people who do this would be characterized in such a way. I think if you dislike Trump, this character likely suits your opinion of him quite well.

Because you have already figured out the catch and run game, one important thing is to under stand. In that game they ask "wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann?" (who is afraid from the black man?) and the children on the other side answered "Niemand" (no one). But in the song every one is afraid of the black man.
In my understanding it is about how you get manipulated due fear in the media or the politic sprectrum.

  • @TierchenF95
    @TierchenF95 Год назад

"der schwarze Mann" has several meanings:
    1. The childrens carching game
One kid is on the one side and all others stand on the opposite side. Than there one kid starts: "Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann?" (Who is afraid of the black man?) - Group "Niemand" (niemand) - single standing person: "und wenn er kommt?" (What if he comes?) - group: "Dann laufen wir!" (Then we run!). In this moment everybody starts running and the one person starts catching all of them.
    2. It can be interpreted as a black skinned or foreign person.
    3. ... the boogie man
    4. ... the death
    5. ... the unknown bad whatever.. a rumor or a fear.
So my main interpretation is, that especially media and leaders influences us with fear of the unknown (red wires) and we start protecting us from anything out there, become paranoid and expect danger in everyone and everthing. This makes us paranoid and dangerous by ourselves and we forget about being kind or human because we think we have to protect us from the unknown and build walls between us and our neighbours without a real reason.
The mother and the child represent refugees who are lost and stuck in a barbed wire and they see us from the outside.
So in my opinion it is a song about racism, obeying, indoctrination, and letting all our little fears becoming big wich leads to violence. Without all of this the word becomes coulerful again.

The song and video focus on hyper-consumerism and fear of the "other" - that modern society's focus on buying things and fear of people unlike ourselves is driven by the angst of our age and our inability to find the true cause and deal with reality.

I always felt this was how the media/politicians divide us by telling us we should fear the things that aren't like us. That all the danger comes not only from outside borders but down the street causing us to bunker down and arm up. the hole they fall down at the end is our fears consuming us and our communities. So many other things in the video I could ascribe meaning to but I don't want a arm's length comment here lol
