- According to the synoptic gospels and Acts, Jesus selected a group of twelve followers-who accompanied him through his ministry and provided leadership in the early days of Christianity.
In this video, we'll get an introduction to each of them. You can get an in-depth introduction to them all here: overviewbible....
And for a REALLY deep dive into the individuals, check out our character guides.

You need to add this about Thomas: He asked Jesus a really important question: Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:5-6)
That sounds more like a fact about Jesus than a fact about Thomas, but I get what you're saying. ;-)

Very well organized. Wonderful work!
All credit goes to St. Thomas for taking the pain to sail to Southern India in AD52 in search of the Jewish Community in Kerala, evangelising them. Till today we believe that he was the source of early christianity just like our ancestors before us (even though later on western missionaries also had a role in shaping and reforming our beliefs.)
Revisiting this video, thank you so much Jeffrey for a fantastic concise overview! Thank you also for supplying resources to delve deeper into the apostles and the Bible itself 🙏

How about Apostle Paul? What was his role in apostleship? Was he one of the twelve?
Thankyou so much brother God bless you more and more this video is really very helpful me for get more knowledge about bible and close to God
Please provide caption of the video.. thankyou.
Very good study, clear, colorful, interesting.
Also, it is possible that the three people that the Lord chose to be close to Him represented three different types of saints… Peter’s main focus may have been leading the church. James main focus may have been being a martyr for his faith. John’s main focus may have been to be a prophet foretelling the end of days.
That's creative-but tradition says that *all* the Eleven except John were martyred, so I'd have a hard time seeing James' role as special in this way.
@@OverviewBible Agree, but he was the first of the 12 to be martyred.
@@markhunter8554 Stephen was the first martyr, of which Paul was present.
God bless you
Brilliant thank you
Thank you!
I’d love a copy of that whiteboard
Thanks dear
Thank you
Have you study o the plan of salvation Acts chapter 2 verse 38
😍
okay im kinda confused. why do you keep mentioning the word "believe" everytime you mention the sayings of either Jesus or the apostles ex: 2:48 or 3:57
english isn't my first language too so idk if its just a different and persistent way of saying "says" or "knows". Or is this explanation treated more like a story and with the explanation of the characters you're saying "Some believe this is so" ?
idk if this made sense, it was just a little weird for me so i wanted to cross check
I have a question for anyone who knows ?
What is the difference when you call them the 12 Apostles vs the 12 Disciples ?
Same crew. ("The Twelve" also works.)
They were disciples them he called them apostles after training and teaching them so they can go out and preach the gospel.
Many people have been called to be disciples throughout the years. When was the last time you heard someone referenced today as an apostle? There is also a theory, in Acts, when judas was replaced that an apostle was a witness directly of Christ death and resurrection. Although they were called apostles by Christ before his death.
A disciple is a learner who follows a teacher and learns his wisdom.
An apostle is to set forth with a commission.
The requirements to be an apostle 1) seen Christ rise (1 Corinthians 9:1) 2) have a fellowship with him (acts 1:21-22) and 3) be chosen (Ephesians 4:11)
Anyone can be a disciple of Christ but not anyone can be an apostle. Hope it helps.
Excellent
Why is there so little information on those Jesus kept closest to him?
Hi Jeffrey, Love the videos, thanks for sharing. Some additional facts. In this video @6:46 you talk about James and John, the sons of Zebedee. Their Mother was actually Salome, who was coincidentally the sister of Mary (Jesus' Mother!). So for John and James to take care of Mary after Jesus is crucified, it just makes family sense. Jesus, James and John were actually cousins! Coincidentally, John the Baptist (and this is a weird one), who was born from Elizabeth, was Mary's Cousin, so even John the Baptist was a 2nd cousin (or at least family), based on Luk 1-3. While I agree personally that John of Zebedee was the writer of John, 1-3John and even Revelations, he is also the only one that died of natural causes at an old age, even after an attempt of killing him by throwing him in boiling oil, failed. While he is referred to as the 'Elder' and the "Evangelist", these gifts were placed in the church (Eph 4:11-16, Rom 12, 1Cor12) - which I believe were the gifts he "manifested" while serving God. Thanks you for your effort!
Well understood.
What about Paul he called himself an Apostle?? Not an original, but he did write half the New Testament.
It's BEAUTIFUL how GOD works......GENESIS 25:25.....And the first came out RED & called his name Esau !!!
Living proof right in your face on screen !!!
JOB 9:24......living proof who runs the world !!!........PSALM 50:16-21 !!.
MALACHI 1:1-4 & ROMANS 9:13 & HEBREWS 12:16-17 ..........Too bad !!!!
How did Paul then became the writer of the Bible [GOSPEL] since he was not part of the Disciples?
Paul was a Christian condener until he was found by Jesus (after his reseraction) read act for more in fo
Whixh James wrote the 📙 of James?
Start 1:34
andrew was first Disciple am i wrong
Wasn’t Caesar not in existence when u referred to Mathew as a tax collector for him. I don’t know I’m just asking?
You should do one on the kings of Israel and Judah; now that would cover the white board!
And I believe That Jesus Let us know what they would be doing ones they where going to be up there with him in Heaven
Luke 6:16, James (son of alphaeus) and Judas are brothers?
JEFFREY THANKS FOR THE GREAT WORK YOUR DOING FOR GOD'S KINGDOM!
IS YOUR BOOK NOW IN PAPERBACK AND AVAILABLE AT BOOKSHOPS?
Amazing you said jhon could possibly be a Gemini. Because as a Gemini I've been telling people for years. 12 months. We are connected and we are ALL Gods apostles and we have their peronality traits. Nothing NEW under the SUN! I made it here because of arch angle Raphael being in the back of the gemini tarot card. He was a healing. I've always felt I was here to heal people.
Hey now. I said Thomas might have been a Gemini, and that was a joke. ;-)
While I really like the thought, I doubt we all have the personality traits of the apostles. that's because we really don't know much about the apostles' personalities. The New Testament writers are far more concerned with the idea that there are twelve of them than they are concerned with what they did or were like!
However, the call to heal people is a very noble one, and I hope you bring much healing to the world around you. =)
@@OverviewBible well sir I believe there is much truth and revalation about your joke. I mean you said it there for it was a subconscious thought. Are personalities are literally just like the seasons. This is something that must be seen with an spiritual eye. But there nothing new under the sun that hasnt been done. No blood issue no limitations. That God can't heal us from its a cycle its the cycles of life and we are ALL connect being the litteraly body of Christ. Gemini being the arm. Taurus the throat. Aries the head. Pisces the feet . Aquarius the ankles. Ect
Astrology and tarot cards are false religions. Dangerous grounds to mix with serving God.
@@freckles3705 so we can talk about sprits but we can't give them a name? Okay!
@@jyajones2222 where did I say anything about naming spirits? Following spirits, reading tarot cards, astrology are controversial to following GOD. It is His first commandment. But if you want to name them it is called antichrist, satan, beelzebub, angel of darkness. Okay!
What about Judas the brother of James?
It would be good to give the references, WE DO KNOW. For example Philip is not the same as the Philip w 4 prophetesses of Acts or that Nathaniel w a reputation of guileless questioning the feeding of the followers etc
I’m seeking non Biblical historical sources for the fate of the apostles. If they exist you seem like you’d know. Do you have any info I can go off of? Thanks.
Good job my brother! Any idea why jews in those days do not give their last name to their children? Most of the characters in the Bible do not have or carry their last name.
Without the last name, it makes it difficult to trace the genealogy of different players. Moving forward when Jews started finally adopting their last names?.
James is Jesus brother right?
Mathias was chosen by the remaining eleven, Paul was chosen by Christ. Revelations 21:14 states the twelve apostles are the twelve foundation stones. Who is number 12? Paul, Judas, Mathias?
Probably Matthias. They wouldn't have replaced Judas Iscariot if he was still a member of the 12 after his betrayal.
Also if Jesus really did choose Paul to be the 12th Apostle instead of Matthias, don't you think He would have specifically said so?
wonderful
What about the apostle Paul?
Not a member of the 12
If you're reading this, subscribe! This guy deserves some recognition. Stay blessed💓
I believe that Nathaniel is Bartholomew but not that Thaddeus is Jude the brother of Jesus (though he is the Judas mentioned in John 14:22).
I wonder if Thomas was more broken hearted than anything else. Jesus having been killed may have seemed amazing for One who had raised a other dead man to life. It would certainly be heart breaking, scary, and confusing if it was me I think.
Aren’t those the 12 disciples?
If that’s not true then what’s the situation with Apostle Paul?
Thanks Jeff.
Apostle means "one who is sent off," derived from the Greek word αποστολος (apostolos). It's used to describe the first missionary to bring the gospel to a certain place. For example, Saint Patrick was the apostle of Ireland in the 400s AD.
As for Paul, he was an apostle, preaching the gospel and establishing many churches in his missionary journeys throughout the Roman Empire, but he was not a member of the 12 Apostles. I hope that makes sense.
