The entire album "Brothers in arms" is amazing
Totally agree with that!! One of my favorite albums of all time. His guitar is impeccable! Have y’all done the full version of “Money for Nothin’” off of this album?? If not, please do!! Mark Knopfler has a very distinctive and unmistakeable guitar!🎸
"Ride Across the River" is one of the best they ever did.

The Man's Too Strong, the way that guitar percussion comes in strong, such a great song.
Love how this song recreates the atmosphere of a local dive bar at closing time, the character of the song sitting in there, once again, drowning his sorrows; the sounds of the empty city at night, the "prehistoric garbage trucks", the "taxis only taking calls for cash", as he has no idea where his life can go next after these latest events. Really creates a visual picture
The man playing all that sax is Michael Brecker one of the very greatest. He won 15 Grammys and played on 900 yes, 900 albums. He died of leukemia a few years ago at 57. He was a wonderful, kind man and he is missed. He and Mark were good friends and he played on several of Mark's albums.
I believe it's Michael Brecker's older brother Randy playing the trumpet intro too.

The title track of this album is amazing. "Brothers in Arms" is such a deep and meaningful song. As a vet, it hits me hard every time.

I always listen to "Brothers In Arms" on ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Day, here in New Zealand.
The live version from 1993 is amazing - or the Mandela concert from 1988 with Eric Clapton in the band....
Brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it. My son had a 4 year ROTC scholarship but had to pass it up because of a medical condition. When I listen to this song I can’t help but think what if he had gone into the Army and wound up in harms way somewhere.
First Thank You For Your Service. As I am a veteran myself, that ong gets me too. This album came out when I was overseas and almost everybody in my unit had this album/cassette. All in all it is a great album and they are a great band
From the trumpet/sax intro to the crossroads of smooth jazz and soul, with a poignant story to boot. A definite favorite from this album.

Dire Straits is well worth a much deeper dive than you guys have experienced thus far. Telegraph Road, Romeo and Juliet, Brothers in Arms and many others could all be considered masterpieces.
You need to hear, Telegraph Road, Lady Writer, So Far Away, Heavy Fuel, Private Investigations, Calling Elvis, Going Home (instrumental), On Every Street, Brothers In Arms, Why Worry, Love Over Gold, to name just a few. This band are amazing
The 1985 album 'Brothers in arms' by Dire Straits became a 9x platinum seller... and it is such a diverse record from pop rock to jazz to ballads... from the opening track 'So Far away'... to 'Brothers in arms' (the song), that album is perfection! 🔥🔥
Mark Knopfler can pretty much play guitar in any style of music.
“Tunnel of Love”, “Romeo and Juliet” are mandatory, as is their crowning glory: “Telegraph Road” with 6 minutes of guitar solo.
Nothing about them should be a unexpected. Mark is probably the greatest songwriter alive and easily IMHO one of the top 10 guitarists. The entire band are superb musicians on top of that.
They were my second concert ever, November 1982. What a glorious experience to Mark spinning solos endlessly!
'Telegraph Road' is a triumph.
Yes, definitely Tunnel of Love, also the title song of this album, Brothers in Arms is a must. Ok it's a slow song too but Knopfler's guitar work in this one is nothing but amazing.

@@musashimiyamoto586 I'd stick with the Dire Straits' official music video for IMO a few good reasons. The audio is way better and you see the band members just like in a live show. The most important reason though is because the official video is 90% a masterfully made hand drawn black pencil step animation.
This album won awards for it's production standards. The entire album is fire, but this is by far my favorite cut. Saxophones can make me cry like a baby!
Mark Knopfler (lead singer) is possibly my favourite musician ever. You said it in a previous video Amber; he is indeed a great storyteller with a career spanning decades and genres. His words and voice are melodic, beautiful, poignant, deep, sad, wistful, raw, sometimes irreverent and his guitar genius is simply mind blowing. I have an entire playlist of Mark's stories, ballads and instrumentals (he wrote and performed the soundtrack for British film "Local Hero" and others) which I play when I'm driving long distances. To me he is a pioneer, a traveller, a man on a journey who celebrates the complexity and beauty of humankind through his music. I love your channel guys. Thanks so much :)
Lead singer and amazing virtuoso guitarist is Mark Knopfler. Such a talented musician, "maker of music". Love him so much!
I can remember vividly sitting far up in the nosebleeds at their "Brother's in Arms" tour and being blinded by this guitar... Awesome sessions awesome concert!! To top it off, Stevie Ray Vaughn opened for them!!
I saw this live on their 1992 tour. The live version was also on radio as a single in 1993.
That album won a bunch of awards. The last song, title track, is amazing. Also The Mans Too Strong from the same album.
Absolutely superb, this is instrumentally my favourite Dire Straits track. I'm so glad you loved it too. For something a little more bluesy try "Fade to Black." This album is a masterpiece.

You just can't get how talented Dire Straits was without listening to the live versions of Tunnel of Love and Sultans of Swing. You'll feel like you're at a concert!
Seriously you guys x. I don't know what is more heart warming to me, watching your first time reaction and discovery of this group Dire Straits and this track in particular. It's wonderful to watch you. Now you know and feel exactly how millions around the world did when this music was fresh and new to our generation. We didn't have the internet back then, and these tunes and thousands of others were stored in our hearts and minds, even shaped our lives in many ways. We'd go into town and buy these tracks and albums and bring them home then lovingly catalogue them on shelves, building up a physical collection of music we felt so proud to own and able to feel and touch in our hands, whether that was a record, tape or CD. There is nothing more satisfying in that feeling of 'owning' a work of music, that we could take out and play on stereo systems, Walkmans and the like. I hope and pray, your generation and the ones after you can experience what we had with this music that has been the sound track to our generation's lives, it's a beautiful thing to see and understand how the music of today is heavily influenced by the music of the past. Music is a big old wheel that keeps on turning and evolving the original source is one of life's glorious mysteries. I hope you will do more than just listen one time to the tracks and artists you react to and are so moved that you will continue expanding on your music knowledge and continue your journey with these songs stored as much in your hearts as much as they are your phones or computers. When 'Brothers in Arms' was released, the vinyl album and the CD became the benchmark for most the stereo shops for many years, it was so well produced. 'The Man's too Strong' from Brothers in Arms has some of the most powerful guitar chords you will ever hear. 'Telegraph Road' is a masterpiece of story telling and would love to hear you react to a 14 minute tune.
When my son was a baby Telegraph Road was the song I could always dance him to sleep while playing it. So that song reminds me of him as a baby. Plus it was long enough to get the job done - rocking and dancing and walking!

Yes! My dad owned a music store and this was the album that a guy used when he was trying to get my dad to carry his speakers. Don’t know if my dad ended up selling the guy’s speakers, but I do know my dad immediately went out and purchased that newfangled CD player and this album.
Brothers in Arms was the first CD to sell a million copies.

I didn't know this was a hit, but it's incredibly beautiful. When I was 18, I had a 90-minute tape with "Brothers in Arms" on one side and Tears For Fears "Songs From the Big Chair" on the other and I alternated sides for sleeping music. Dire Straits lead singer has such a peaceful voice that even Money For Nothing is relaxing.
Indeed, the whole album is a masterpiece. The second side has an anti-war theme running through it, starting with “Ride Across The River” which is gorgeous on its own, finished out with the album title track (get the Kleenex).
Try some earlier stuff too… Romeo & Juliet, Where Do You Think You’re going?, Skateaway… to mention a few.
There’s more Knopfler out there. He’s released nine solo albums since DS, working on #10 now.
For me still the best band to come out of the UK,Mark Knopfler songwriter, singer and and one of the elite Guitarist of all time, Mark has some exceptional solo albums, a favourite of mine is Shangri-la sung with the amazing Emmy Lou Harris it has an amazing outro with some amazing musicians
Dire Straits was such a great band and I would also recommend a song similar to this one off of the same album called, "Why Worry."

Yes this is another fine track from the Brothers in Arms album which is terrific. Mark Knofler the guitarist and songwriter has also released some good solo albums. Other great songs by Dire Straits to check out are Private Investigations , Romeo and Juliet , and Skate away.

All of Mark Knopplers solo albums are fabulous. He is an amazing story teller. "Rag Pickers Dream" is one of my favorites along with "Sailing to Philadelphia"
As mark Knopfer got older his music became more mellow. He is in his 70s now and still going and his stuff is absolutely sublime

I had totally forgotten about this song for a minute.. Honestly I am here almost crying!!.... I remember listening to this Cassette back in the 80's while taking the subway in NY to go to HS...These were the times when I learned to love this music!!!......... This is just an amazing album and song! ....thanks!
Yeah, man, I know what you mean. The first time I heard this track was on a cassette in a 68 Camero flying down the road in the cold winter with no heat in the car.

Mark Knopfler is a genius, and the Brother's in Arms album is proof. My favorite song is The Man's Too Big. That song has my favorite line. "Your sister gave me diamonds, and I give 'em to your wife." Typing it gives me chills. Then I saw an interview where someone was explaining the guitar lick from Money For Nothing". It is still considered one of the best ever, and it was explained that he got the idea for it from a banjo chord.
Private Investigations is another must wear headphones track.

Mark Knopfler's a genius. Gotta do "Going Home", one of the best Sax songs of the last 50 years.
That sax part feels exactly like Mark Knopfler's guitar. It's like he wrote the song and played that part on his guitar, then went around asking sax players if they could do that and when he found one that could he signed them up. I'm sure that's not how it happensd, but it's the way it feels.

This is Dire Straits being Mellow. As people have said this entire album is worth listening to. You were both totally chilled out so you’ll need to listen to it again to catch all the lyrics. Yes Jay, this is a real whiskey and cigar tune.
This song (entire album really) deserves to be heard on the best stereo you can get access to. Do yourself a favor and go to the best Stereo shop in town, and get them to play it on the best speakers in the place before they all go out of business. Headphones do not do it justice.
I always loved this song because it was so different from the other songs. It has a jazz feel (which you should explore more). Versatility separates many artists. There is so much going on in the background!
So glad to see you guys get back to Dire Stairs again. This band along with CCR are my 2 most favorite bands of all time. Singer songwriter Mark Knopfler is pure genius and a brilliant guitar player as well. So many incredible songs to check out by them but you can start with my 2 favorites Romeo and Juliet and Tunnel of Love.

My wife took me to see Mark Knopfler in Santa Barbara a few years ago as a birthday present. She was raving about how amazing he was for days after. It was easily the best concert I've ever attended.

DS has been one of my favorites for years!!! I was introduced to them by our Belgian foreign exchange student. “Tunnel of Love”, “Romeo and Juliet” "Solid Rock" and so many others just take you away. Orchestrated yet rockin'. Mark is brilliant and diverse, check out any tune from "Neck and Neck" where he plays with Chet Atkins. Amazing!!! Dig, dig, dig..
This song had so much airplay back in the 80s and 90s for its easy listening quality. It always takes me back in time.

You have to listen to Telegraph Road by Dire Straits. Settle down, it's about 14 mins long but is the best thing they've done since the Making Movies album.
I thought I'd heard every Dire Straits song they was but new one here for me . Anything Mark Knoplers doing im going to love either way . Hes so talented and his band !!! So good .
When this came out, I was hanging around with my good buddy Dave,and his father ,who was a bit of a mentor to me, was seriously into audiophile type stuff. He had a system that was literally close to the best in the world. Man,we played the heck out of this cd! This album won awards for recording quality and engineering, and that superior quality attracted people like myself,who were into hard rock and metal,allowing us to broaden our musical horizons and enjoy new things that we wouldn't normally listen to. Honestly, this album should be in any music lovers Playlist!❤
Yes. This was the biggest selling CD at the time for audiophiles. I sold it to audio sales people. I worked at the first all CD store in the city and we were located between Circuit City and a music instrument dealer. The perfect location. This was among the first all digital recorded, mixed, and mastered CDs in Rock at thr time.

Telegraph Road is one of my favorite songs ever. I've been listening to it for 40 years, and it never gets old.
Whole album is a winner but Planet of New Orleans really hits the mark for me. Great song with great lyrics. It's all I could think of my first time in NOLA.

The smile on Amber’s face every time the Sax takes over… 😁 absolutely amazing. But yes, it’s an amazing and relaxing song, just amazing as the whole album. Better maybe only the title track “Brothers in arms”, as beautiful as this one, but hits different. And of course “Money for nothing”, a very cocky song and where you will maybe recognize a very familiar voice on the backing vocals 😁! Oh yes, Mark plays very often barefoot indeed, but he always plays just with his fingers, never used a plectrum I believe, which makes him have a very unique and distinctive style and sound
Best live performances in the world (imo) are tunnel of love and sultans of swing, both alchemy versions. Doesn’t get any better.
Alchemy is just astonishing. You'll never see or hear a better live concert than that.

The incomparable late, great Michael Brecker on tenor sax and brother Randy on trumpet. Mike was the man to hire and appears on everyone's albums wherever a tenor sax was required (David Sanborn was the alto sax-for-hire equivalent). Mike was a giant on the tenor and influenced almost every tenor player that came after him. Other examples of his playing, among hundreds, would be James Taylor's Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight or Donald Fagan's Maxine. Well worth checking out. ❤

The biggest hit from this album, and Dire Straits biggest hit was "Money for Nothing". Sting singing background vocals, repeating the MTV advertisement, "I want my MTV." It was also the first CGI music video in the mid 80's Unfortunately, it rarely receives play now, due to a homophobic slur. But they used it as quoted by a closed-minded guy that believed he could have been a rock star ang get money for nothing and chicks for free

Brothers In Arms was the first triple Digital CD offered!! The sound quality is fantastic!! Marked as: DDD on the 💿 disc and the case. 😉
They recorded this album in the Caribbean at a studio where Sting and The Police were recording Synchronicity at the same time! To that point... Amber and J, you two need to do *Money For Nothin* if you haven't done it already.

Got this album on tape back in '85 because I liked "Money For Nothin'", and did what I always did with new tapes back then and listened all the way through it. This song always stuck with me, and I can still remember it in my headphones walking around my little neighborhood just soaking it all in. Really opened my musical mind early on.
This song is a very dirty smokey city blues/jazz song, almost like Chicago late at night or something, it's great :D Thanks guys, please more Dire Straits !! "Water of Love" "Once upon a time in the west"

Also, Tommy Shaw contemporary youth orchestra - Fooling Yourself. Tommy is a member of the band Styx. You will love the orchestra, the violins, horns, percussion all playing one of Styx' most popular songs.
Walk of life is great on that album too and was a hit. I also loved the mark Knopfler solo track What it is.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. I recommend the live version from "On The Night". Possibly even better.
This album was one of the first that was mastered for the then new format: Compact Discs.
Of course, most of us only had records and tapes at the time. CDs and the players were prohibitively expensive more most casual music fans in the mid '80s.
Today I have Brothers In Arms on DVD mastered in 5.1. It sounds even better through a room full of speakers and a sub.

Dire Straits is an excellent band. Mark Knopfler is a talented guitarist. This album was really huge, much of it due to the song and MTV video "Money For Nothing", which propelled them and showcased them to an entirely new generation of fans.
During the 80's the sax became one of the most used instruments for artists/bands. You heard it everywhere and it defined the era. I love the sound of the sax. Nothing better than good sax 😉
If I could recommend another Dire Straits song, it would be Romeo and Juliet. I think that might be my favorite song of theirs, but it's hard to choose a favorite with this band. Brothers in Arms is also a pretty poignant song.
"Going Home" and "Telegraph Road" are all time classics.

I have every Dire Straits album and I love every song except one and I listen to it out of respect to Knopfler. Every other song is fabulous. So much emotion in all of them.
