Aren't we lucky to still have the genius Mark Knopfler still making unique beautiful music!🎸

There's a RUclips video where Mark meets up with Briaj Johnson from AC/DC.
Both are Geordies (from Newcastle on Tyne) . They meet in Whitley Bay (a seaside town a few miles from Newcastle)
Sultans was the song that put the band in the spotlight.
Brian asked "Where did you get the idea for the song?"
    Mark laughed and said.
I went into a bar one night to get out of the rain and a band was playing. Only a few customers were in most weren't paying attention. They band weren't that good.
The bar owner had to interrupt to say "last number guys we are closing."
After they finished the band announced "Thanks. Goodnight we are the Sultans of Swing."
Mark explained "They weren't really Sultans of anything. That's where I got the idea."
A misic historian decided to test Mark's remark analysed the lyrics to try and find the bar.
He knew the band was living in London at the time.
    LYRICS
You get a shiver in the DARK
It's a RAINING IN THE PARK but MEANTIME you stop and hold everything.
A band is blowing dixie double four time
Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
But you feel alright when you hear the music ring.
He looked for a bar where live music was played South of the river Thames close to a park.
The word "meantime" suggested Greenwich where there's an onbervatory where Greenwich Meantime (used in maval navigation) was developed.
The historian narrowed it down to one of two bars!
    Mark's lyrics paint pictures.
I suggest you check out Tunnel of Love Sydney 1986. It's a sort of love story with hints of a mis-spent youth.
"Girl you look so pretty to me.
    Like you always did.
Like the Spanish City to me
    When we were kids.
The tunnel of love is like a train ride through a dark tunnel you'd take your date on and make out. They had one at Spanish City in Whitley Bay.
If you want a close up view of Mark's finger style you get one in the instrumental section after the vocals in the performance of Tunnel of Love in Sydney in 86.
    Enjoy!

It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.

Been touted as one of the best, if not the best, live performance by a rock band....ever. What's so amazing about it is the incredible musicianship of each musician on stage and how they complement each other. This performance, if you listen to each musician, they're not just banging away or slopping away - they are gelling in a genuine musical sense. Some people want one musician or another to stand out, but, frankly, they each contribute to this performance pretty much equally. The most logical standouts are Mark and Terry, but they all are amazing.

I was at Hammersmith back in '83, I was 18 and had long hair, which is long gone!
It was an amazing concert, but at the time, at that age, you really don't appreciate it as much as you should
We knew Mark is world class on Guitar, Hal Lindes is good, John Illsley on bass is good, Alan Clark on main keyboard is good, along with Tommy Mandel on back up keys, but Terry Williams absolutely smashed it. The best drummer you've never heard of!
This is one of the best live performances of any band anywhere.
You really need to watch Telegraph Road, from the same show, it was the encore 👍👍

I think the Straights tune that doesn't get enough credit is "Down to The Waterline". Dire Straights had a strange career. They had solid albums and built a following but their best album "Making Movies" was just a quiet success. Dire Straights hit the big time with "Brother's in Arms" which was far inferior to "Making Movies".

David Knopfler had a fight with his brother and left the group after the record, but before the Alchemy tour... replaced by Hal Lindes. And the original drummer (Pick Withers) figured to have found a better gig elsewhere (he didn't)... replaced by a better drummer, the amazing Terry Williams of Wales, Dave Edmunds, and Rockpile--- in contention with Neil Peart, Keith Moon, and Bonzo Bonham for greatest Rock drummer ever. Greetings from Canada- Peace, love and bellbottoms.

The reason why Mark has the sweatband/headband is because of ... sweat. Note how MK is playing his Strat almost 'clean' (no/minimum pedals or sound processing). He said that drops of sweat on the strings would effect the sound. There are not many guitarists brave enough to play their guitar 'clean' when playing live, as every mistake will be heard by the crowd. MK proverbially said, "Hold my beer, and give me a sweatband!".

Also, it was interesting to see that your blink rate dropped to about a fifth of normal, like you couldn't take your eyes of what you were seeing. I was there that night. Mark is rated as the 27th best guitarist by Rolling Stone Mag, although I think he should be number one.
