Best drummer performance i've ever seen!!!
Just realised after all these years of listening to dire straits they had so much energy in their live performances!
Aren't we lucky to still have the genius Mark Knopfler still making unique beautiful music!🎸
There's a RUclips video where Mark meets up with Briaj Johnson from AC/DC.
Both are Geordies (from Newcastle on Tyne) . They meet in Whitley Bay (a seaside town a few miles from Newcastle)
Sultans was the song that put the band in the spotlight.
Brian asked "Where did you get the idea for the song?"
Mark laughed and said.
I went into a bar one night to get out of the rain and a band was playing. Only a few customers were in most weren't paying attention. They band weren't that good.
The bar owner had to interrupt to say "last number guys we are closing."
After they finished the band announced "Thanks. Goodnight we are the Sultans of Swing."
Mark explained "They weren't really Sultans of anything. That's where I got the idea."
A misic historian decided to test Mark's remark analysed the lyrics to try and find the bar.
He knew the band was living in London at the time.
LYRICS
You get a shiver in the DARK
It's a RAINING IN THE PARK but MEANTIME you stop and hold everything.
A band is blowing dixie double four time
Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
But you feel alright when you hear the music ring.
He looked for a bar where live music was played South of the river Thames close to a park.
The word "meantime" suggested Greenwich where there's an onbervatory where Greenwich Meantime (used in maval navigation) was developed.
The historian narrowed it down to one of two bars!
Mark's lyrics paint pictures.
I suggest you check out Tunnel of Love Sydney 1986. It's a sort of love story with hints of a mis-spent youth.
"Girl you look so pretty to me.
Like you always did.
Like the Spanish City to me
When we were kids.
The tunnel of love is like a train ride through a dark tunnel you'd take your date on and make out. They had one at Spanish City in Whitley Bay.
If you want a close up view of Mark's finger style you get one in the instrumental section after the vocals in the performance of Tunnel of Love in Sydney in 86.
Enjoy!
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. Even road tripping.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Making a living like that wouldn't suck.🤑🤑🤑🤑
Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩🤩
No brother involved here! Hal Lindes playing the rhythm guitar here.
David Knopfler allready left the band.
Been touted as one of the best, if not the best, live performance by a rock band....ever. What's so amazing about it is the incredible musicianship of each musician on stage and how they complement each other. This performance, if you listen to each musician, they're not just banging away or slopping away - they are gelling in a genuine musical sense. Some people want one musician or another to stand out, but, frankly, they each contribute to this performance pretty much equally. The most logical standouts are Mark and Terry, but they all are amazing.
This performance belongs to Terry Williams who owns it. What a drummer!
absolutely, if you don't immediately recognize what a masterpiece the drummer put down then shut up lol
Fantastic drummer ! the best
Absolutely, like wise all the others on stage.
Never knew his name, only knew that i loved his drumming and energy. Found out he has the same first name as me only made it more glorious lol
Apparently, his father came to this performance and, in his enthusiasm, he played at a faster tempo than usual....
I was at Hammersmith back in '83, I was 18 and had long hair, which is long gone!
It was an amazing concert, but at the time, at that age, you really don't appreciate it as much as you should
We knew Mark is world class on Guitar, Hal Lindes is good, John Illsley on bass is good, Alan Clark on main keyboard is good, along with Tommy Mandel on back up keys, but Terry Williams absolutely smashed it. The best drummer you've never heard of!
This is one of the best live performances of any band anywhere.
You really need to watch Telegraph Road, from the same show, it was the encore 👍👍
Thanks for sharing! I'm sure it was a hell of an experience.
not sure why you say Terry is best drummer? Because he can drum faster than anyone else? I mean I really don't understand what is the criteria. Listen first 3 albums and you will see why Pick was a great drummer.
TELEGRAPH ROAD from this same concert ALCHEMY LIVE must be your next reaction.
Mr Knopfler again wrote the words, music, arranged it, sang and played his guitar as only he can.
Another masterpiece well worth a reaction.
Well done listening to your comments ❤️
Totally agree with your comment
I think the Straights tune that doesn't get enough credit is "Down to The Waterline". Dire Straights had a strange career. They had solid albums and built a following but their best album "Making Movies" was just a quiet success. Dire Straights hit the big time with "Brother's in Arms" which was far inferior to "Making Movies".
There seems to be two keyboard players, one to each side of drummer. One jumping an dancing has curly hair, other one more straight hair.
The "guy dancing in the background" is the second keyboard player, who only gets into one shot near the end.
Shame, he deserves more screen time.
Tommy Mandel......one of the best.
Not only is Mark one of the world's greatest rock guitarists, he doesn't use a pick, and he's LEFT HANDED!!! Just amazing.
Incredible talent
Was in Hammersmith Oden London 1983 for this Concert aged 29 now 68 it will forever remain in my top five concerts attended
1. Queen Wembley 1986
2 Led Zeppelin Earls Court 1975
3.Dire Straits Alchemy 1983
4 Bruce Hornsby and the Range Hammersmith Oden 1986
5. Springsteen Barcelona 2002
Mark is huge fan of bluegrass listen to his album All the Road Running he collaborated with Emmylou Harris absolutely brilliant.
David Knopfler had a fight with his brother and left the group after the record, but before the Alchemy tour... replaced by Hal Lindes. And the original drummer (Pick Withers) figured to have found a better gig elsewhere (he didn't)... replaced by a better drummer, the amazing Terry Williams of Wales, Dave Edmunds, and Rockpile--- in contention with Neil Peart, Keith Moon, and Bonzo Bonham for greatest Rock drummer ever. Greetings from Canada- Peace, love and bellbottoms.
Knowledge from my Canadian people! Awesome to hear how rich of a history these guys possessed, very cool 😎
David basicly wanted to record his own songs and his songs were nowhere near the quality of Marks writing, that's also why almost nobody knows a David Knopfler song even though he released over 10 albums
David left The band in 1980, Terry Williams replace Pick Withers in 1982 after The Love Over Gold release and the Alchemy Live was recorded in 1983 with Hal Lindes on Rhytm guitars, Hal replace David in 1980 ! Regards from Brazil
@@StevenQ74 That's some true saying my friend, unfortunately for David his talent in nowhere around his brother's
Ian Paice??
Great reaction....
The look of awe you had realizing you were watching pure genius.
Driving to St. George Island, Florida with some friends in 78
this song came on the radio and the car went silent. Later someone asked, "Who the F was that?"
Bought the album when I got home.
My dad had built an awesome hi-fi for me.
Still have the album and the hi-fi.
Miss you dad.
Still gather at the same beach with same friends.
Keep pluggin....you're good.
Subscribed 😊
Thats a look of awe?
This is better than the studio version.
Dire Straits are one of the few bands where their live performances are better than their already great studio tracks. Ten Years After were another. By contrast Led Zeppelin’s live takes rarely matched the quality of the album tracks.
Can't imagine how many times I have listened to that and it gets me every single time!
I have always been impressed with the drummer’s work on this one.
That wasn't Mark's Brother David. It was American Guitarist Hal Lindes. Yes he uses a pick.😉
The reason why Mark has the sweatband/headband is because of ... sweat. Note how MK is playing his Strat almost 'clean' (no/minimum pedals or sound processing). He said that drops of sweat on the strings would effect the sound. There are not many guitarists brave enough to play their guitar 'clean' when playing live, as every mistake will be heard by the crowd. MK proverbially said, "Hold my beer, and give me a sweatband!".
Makes the hair stand up on my neck every single time.
Funnily enough, watching reactors without the video is actually great. You get to see the reaction without the distraction of the visuals. Also, it was interesting to see that your blink rate dropped to about a fifth of normal, like you couldn't take your eyes of what you were seeing. I was there that night. Just got back from a long deployment with the Navy and was probably more than open to an experience like this.
Very cool and hilarious you saw my "blink rate" haha
Amazing live performance and you're right, both the drummer and the keyboard player are on level with the guitarrists and the bass which is sometthing.
totally agree
I would say keyboard player was on a level of Mark Knopfler throughout many albums if you listen to Mark's songs, even his solo career songs for films where keyboards accompanied him. Especially keyboards on some songs like Love over gold and so on. Keyboard guy is amazing talent
Where is the video? Ok, I'm now gonna hit the back button
Drummer is lighting it up in this song
Hell ya
@@breakdownlounge9541
I think his father was in the audience and his first time hearing Terry live, so he wanted to be good enough and Impress his father, and played his heart out ❤️
@@jennywren7822 I think you are right
That was some reaction! About as exciting as observing the explosiveness that occurs when salt is added to cold water!
Dire Straits still The Best❤❤❤❤❤
"That ending was like entering the gates of heaven," is a great way to put it. 😁
It's really just a riff from 'shadow play' by Rory Gallagher. I like it though. 😊🤗
I like Rory better tho. 🎸
Thatś not Markś brother. He left the band long before this performance.
You have witnessed the greatest live band then and now. Mark is truly a musical genius and there hasn't been another band to follow Dire Straits. Mark is rated as the 27th best guitarist by Rolling Stone Mag, although I think he should be number one. Their changes are to keep the audience interested, especially as a lot of their songs are long and so brilliant. I think your reaction would have been better if you had showed the band and not yourself. Mark is known for his brilliant unique style of playing. Thank you
Your comment is totally accurate and I agree with you
Mark's brother was not in the band at the time of this performance. Hal Lindes is in the crazy trousers playing rhythm guitar.
Telegraph road of the same awesome Alchemy album is even a more awesome track ;)
brilliant track
Magic
Truly
Have to see the band young fellow
I'm interested in "seeing" some of the finer work here too.... too bad you aren't sharing the video. You look OK, but I'm here to see the performance
that is what i said in my comment
Just watch the original video then lmao.
Mark's headband was a necessity. It felt like 50°C in the hall
Why don't you put the performance of the artists up on screen so we can actually look at that also..like nearly everyone else does...believe it or not it would be more interesting than just looking at you ...
my sentiments too
10 seconds in and stop..musical criminality
OMG BRO!! Loudest white noise on a mic IVE EVER HEARD. You sure you're a musician?
Mark's brother is not on stage with him. He had left the band by then.
Check out tunnel of love live same concert
Funny you mentioned elements of bluegrass…from Mark’s solo work give a listen to the song Speedway at Nazareth.
That's not David Knopfler on rhythm........he left the band one year before. It's a young Hal Lindes on fire.
You never mentioned the brilliance of Terry Williams on drums and the innovative techniques he used..dont get that one..
....with no video???.....Out of maybe 50 reaction videos of this very version I've watched, to have no accompanying video is beyond weird. The whole point of a live concert is the combination of audio AND visual. Sorry, I'm out at 1:38 of this....
Thanks for not interrupting the song, but for a few seconds.......Most stop the song every 30 seconds, I guess there must be a reason they have to interrupt so much, Copyrights maybe ??
You mentioned Mark's brother..he's not in there, you probably mean Hal Lindes on backup guitar.
Ohhh good catch good catch, thanks for letting me know. I'm assuming he toured with them during some of those years? Loved his performance.
@@stefanlawsonable en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dire_Straits_band_members 😉
Well Hal Lindes plays rhythm guitar. Not backup. If it was backup he should wait 'till mark get technical issues and replace him. lol
So he wouldn't have anything to do. But that wasn't the case. ;-)
@@GuitarPlayersFun my bad 😆
@@tynzolav Probably you called me a nitpicker instead of fingerpicker. lol
You have no clip of the performance dude! Wtf is he talking about?
He is the pianist
He is one of two keyboard players. Not "the pianist".
@@kimmytuna5180 thank you for the clarification
@@jenniferthompson528 You are welcome.
You never see any books in the background of shitty reaction videos. Quite telling.
;)
Guy jumping plays keyboards
I would like to see some Lana Del Rey videos, hope you do them :)
You have the energy of a slug.
Sorry won't listen/look your video because of the sound on the back 😢
Why keep drinking it’s iggnorant
I think the drummer almost overpowers the song, he's good - but he's almost leading the guitarist.
You love the sweat band and casually drink your coffee and all we want to see is the band perform. To be honest you should try and look more enthusiastic. You might be a good musician but your reactor skills need working on. I do not wish to sound rude but just helpful. Thank you.
Do canadians think they have or know music? who knew? it's only UK and US music that matters....the rest just suck.
