I HIGHLY recommend Telegraph Road, Sultans of Swing, Romeo and Juliet, and Tunnel of Love.
I saw them in 1983, and to this day, they are my favorite concert ever. After watching 3 hours of Mark Knopfler play extended solos and guitar magic on nearly every song, to me he will always be the best guitarist of all. Notice he plays with his fingers. Despite that, he is even better at his songwriting, many of his songs being long extended stories.

I love Dire Straights, Mark Knoffer is one of the best song writer/guitars ever. His guitar playing is unique and even haunting. He wrote a song called Brothers in Arms. It will pull at every emotion you have. Many believe it is the best song of the rock era. When I listen to Bros in Arms I feel every chord he plays. I can only describe it as the guaitar sings and Mark narrates the words. Mark Knoffler is truly a great guitarist ranked with, Clapton, Beck, & Stevie Ray Vaughn. They are virtuosos with different styles. Never underestimate Knofflers talent.

I'm not a huge Dire Straits fan, but I remember when the Brothers in Arms cd came out it was huge. "Money for Nothing," Walk of Life," and "So Far Away" were on the radio a lot. I loved the songs "Your Latest Trick," and "Brothers in Arms" off of the same cd, but you didn't hear them played much. As many people are saying, their older song, "Sultans of Swing," was a fairly large hit also. Other than those songs, they don't seem to be very mainstream music. They are the kind of band that if you get into, you can find plenty of music to like from them, but it's not going to come to you. You have to search for it.

Sultans of Swing is a definite must. Highly recommend that you first react to the studio version before moving on to the alchemy live performance. Pay close attention to lead singer Mark Knopfler's guitar playing and wait till you notice what he does, that virtually no one else does apart from some acoustic, folk and country musicians and even than typically a technique used for specific songs, rarely is it any artists go to standard of playing. Oh wow can't wait to see your reactions when you notice =)!!!

I'm not sure how many times Dire Straits toured Australia, but I saw them twice. In 1986 in Cairns and 1991, in Brisbane. Cairns is in the tropical north, and during the concert the skies opened up. It was at the showgrounds and the audience was standing ankle deep in water. Mark Knoefler sang "Sing in the Rain". Eventually, it became too dangerous to continue. Have a listen to "Romeo and Juliet". He plays that steel guitar that you see in your post. Great song. 🦘

"After all the violence and double talk, there's just a song in the trouble and the strife. You do the walk, you do the walk of life." That's the song's core right there...so she got it right. If you must cross the thin ice, why not do it with a dance? That's kinda the vibe. If you're going to the gallows, flip a penny to the hangman, give a jest to the crowd, and die with a smile on your lips. Or keep walking through...maybe the gallows isn't your stop. We don't know until we get there....so keep walkin.

Hey, hello...you two are so infectious in terms of your enthusiasm for music I grew up with (born in "52") now retired and watchin on you!!! I have been taken aback by your reactions and I caught this infection...from the ressurection of the old school vibes you entertain me with. I would definately be wantin to hang out with you guys...you put me in my place ( back to the early days) so in return for your love I plan to be investigatin and evaluatin and appreciatin some RAP AND HIP HOP...AND OF COURSE RYTHEM AND BLUES...to share in this quest for a well rounded understanding and love for all musical art forms. You make me laugh and cry...why? Because you are such beautiful people with open hearts and open minds. Thank you you are my kindred spirits and I visit you every day to get a dose of this love and my heart burns with anticipation of what gifts you have for me each day..so in reality you got me infected just now I've detected...it's not a disease cuz you gave me the keys to open new doors and so I will be with you on your awesome journey. YOU ARE MY CURE SO I GOTTA CHECK IN EVERY DAY AND TAKE MY MEDICINE...PEACE LOVE AND ALL OF THE ABOVE GOTTA HAVE MORE LOVE. Doctors of love are you. ☮🎶👁✌

This is no way the Dire Straits song to start with. You need to do the live version of Sultans of Swing from the Alchemy live album. Follow that up with Money For Nothing and Romeo And Juliet!

'Wild West End' find T4Ad_J_2l0w Special for me is the guitar work by Mark Knopfler (Rolling Stone ranked him 27th in top 100 greatest guitarists of all time and 'Offthetracks ranks him #8, while guitar world ranks him #12... Let's just say he's damn good! :) . He is a Fender Stratocaster (among many) electric guitar player who... Get this... finger picks (very unusual) and it adds a dynamic to the lead guitar that you don't get elsewhere! The tunes Dire Straits plays are mostly rock with a bluesy, folksy, with a 'swung' rhythm (google 'swing rhythms' to know what to listen for...). Dire Straits is about each song... The leads and drum work is stellar, but it's about the whole package. Depending on what I'm in the mood for, I'd say my 3 favorite groups are Dire Straits, The Eagles and Journey followed closely by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. Please do 'Wild West End' and zero in on those lyrics... They remind me of a friend I lost many years ago in the fondest of ways! :) Oh! And other tunes that aren't reacted to by Dire Straits much... 'Six Blade Knife', 'Water of Love' and 'So Far Away'. The classics are a must hear ('Sultans of Swing', Brothers in Arms' & 'Money for Nothing'), but these others are, as you would say... "Fire!". :)

Dire straits is odd in the respect that they have one of the best selling albums of all times (Brothers in Arms) and the lead singer is generally considered one of the Best Guitarists Ever, and despite that have been forgotten.
This is actually the 2nd video for this song, made for the US market... the original video matched the song more, and was literally about a guy in the tubes (London Underground) busking, and singing classic songs. If you go through they lyrics carefully, you may be able to work out what songs were being referenced.

I generally don’t care for a ton of 80s rock. Dire straits is the exception. They’re phenomenal. Romeo and Juliet is a good one that probably won’t get much love. Sultans of swing and money for nothing are both must-listens for them.

    • @JaronActual

Most copies of that track readily available today have that verse cut out, unfortunately, because it was horribly misunderstood and misinterpreted.
Mark isn't calling someone that slur. The song is written from the point of view as a common moving man laborer.
