This was my Dad's favorite song by his favorite band. I remember him tapping his feet to the tune and just getting really happy anytime it came on. This song holds a special place in my heart because of that. Thanks for reacting to it!
This was one of my granny's favorite songs...she jumped on the rock and roll bandwagon really early, much to my grandpa's horror. I remember my grandpa had recently died about this time and this was one of the songs that brought her out of her (justifiable) depression at that point.
Your Dad has (had? condolences if so) excellent taste. Dire Straits is widely recognized for Mark Knopfler's top tier guitar playing and their drumming/rhythm section and rightly so . But give some love for the trebly (Farfisia?) organ and the more subtle lower opening riff (Hammond organ?) that lays down the firm foundation. =//=OldDudesStillRock
Telegraph Road and. Romeo & juliet are both masterpieces. Way more than just pop or rock, poetry and history and anguish and love with great melodies and playing of course.
For me, watching the sports clips and listening to the verses, it was just persevering through all our little bumps and falls we go through our life but through dedication and work, we find a way to succeed and get by. In the end, it's just the walk through life that we all deal with. There are a lot of great Dire Straits songs to listen to though. Some have been mentioned but I like "Lady Writer" "Ride Across the River" "Why Worry" "Your Latest Trick"(live version) "Industrial Disease" and "Down to the Waterline"
I used this CD to show off my stereo system to everyone. Recorded completely digitally, which at the time for a Pop/Rock album was rare, it's still one of the best recordings I've ever heard. The entire album is a classic, with a wide range of sounds and themes. It's hard to explain, but hearing the sound quality of this disc in 1985 was truly breathtaking.
Brothers in Arms was a really great album. I remember being blown away at how crisp and clear that recording was. I used to fall asleep to it in my giant 1970's style headphones and wake up with my ears on fire.
@@jasonfirewalker3595 Understandable! Now considering I am a real fan of vinyl, and I prefer the warmer, more natural sound of vinyl, I can always appreciate a truly amazing digital recording. I too wore out my headphones, not only on Brothers in Arms, but also on Donald Fagen's 'The Nightfly'.
Dire Straights was kind of the definition of a blue collar working band. They were truly a working class English band dedicated mainly to the club circuit and small venues throughout much of their career. They didn’t hit it big until fairly late in their existence, and then they blew up meteorically, reaching heights of some of the biggest acts in U.K. music history. But they didn’t seem to let their meteoric fame go to their heads which is what I really admired about them.
This is a top 5 band. The live version of Telegraph Road is one of the best performances ever. Amazing changes in tempo and incredible transitions. ✅ it out
You did this, Brothers In Arms, Money for Nothing and Sultans of Swing which were massive hits. Other songs in the top 40: Romeo And Juliet, Skateaway, Private Investigations, Twisting By The Pool, So Far Away, Your Latest Trick, Calling Elvis, Lady Writer, Industrial Disease. So yes, there's a lot more. Common people, give Lex what she wants.
Mark Knopfler made a a record with Emmy Lou Harris in 2006 entitled All the Roadrunning that is very good. Must listens from that record: Love and Happiness and All the Roadrunning. Both songs showcase these artist's voices perfectly and how well they are together. I will NEVER forget when Dire Straits stormed onto the scene in 1977, the voice and his guitar was so different than anything out there at the time....the sound was an instant addiction! Thank you DS for the 6 studio albums you left us. Great reaction guys, TY.
You stumble around through life, sometimes the decisions you make are good sometimes not. Sometimes you succeed lots of times you fail. Lex got this one:)
I was recently listening to this song for memory sake. About 2/3 in I started crying my heart because this is one of hundreds of songs that my mom and my grandfather would play on their radios for me when I was a kid. This song is so beautiful that it will put you in such a good mood, make you want to dance, and if you’re as soft as I am it will send you to tears. Time flies by so fast
"Sailing to Philadelphia" is a great little song, full of spirit and hope, and if you catch "evening with Mark Knopfler" version, you'll get a bit of a feel for his personality, and how he just became even better as a musician as he aged.
Been a huge Dire Straits fan all my life, so happy you are diving into some more of their catalogue. Maybe check out Romeo and Juliet, Down to the Waterline or So far Away
I saw Dire Straits in Darwin Australia back in the late 1980's out door in the middle of a tropical down pour and they just kept playing, amazing band live.
Ooo how this brings back memories this is one of the 1st songs played on MTV when not only when MTV 1st started and back when MTV actually just played music
This has always been such a “feel good” song for me and all of the old sports bloopers make me giggle every time 😆 Another video that’s fun to watch is Paul Simon’s Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard. It has several stars in it including Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, John Madden & Mickie Mantle. I hope you guys will check it out sometime.
That's how I always interpreted the video: we all stumble, bobble, fall down, or just have things go wrong...but in the end we all have our little victories to celebrate. I also used to watch the sport bloopers shows on TV back then, so it was a fun and feelgood video.
Mark Knopfler has had a very successful solo career. He is a guitar god. A personal favorite song is ''Why worry'', live. The tune is beautiful & the lyrics are as well.
Lex you are smart and amazing it was used in a commercial just don’t remember which one keep it up guys. Your awesome to Brad. Love you guys. God Bless
I remember seeing Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits open up for Bob Dylan. I was there for Bob Dylan, didnt know much about Dire Straits but left that concert absolutely in love with them, almost remember their performance more than Dylans. Amazing show.
To your point at 2:32 about it being used in a commercial: I'm pretty sure this song was used for a Burger King commercial when they tried to start selling BBQ sandwiches in like 2012 or 2013
Brad & Lex, you'll love their "So Far Away" and "Romeo And Juliet"!!! This definitely fit the fun song live stream. The song is used in a drug commercial for Farxiga.
Someone below has suggested the live alchemy version of Telegraph Road. For me the best performance of the best rock song ever written. Mark Knopfler is an absolute genius. Thank you for your reaction. Best wishes from the UK.
The song's about a busker in a subway. If you want to listen to more Dire Straits, I'd recommend "Romeo and Juliet", "Tunnel of Love", and "Telegraph Road", an for some of their earlier, darker stuff, "Six Blade Knife", "News", and "Where Do You Think You're Going". Since the band broken up, the lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Mark Knopfler has carried on as a solo artist - of his solo songs, I'd suggest "Baloney Again", "Song for Sony Liston", "I Dug Up a Diamond" (with Emmylou Harris), "Haul Away", "Don't Forget Your Hat", "Radio City Serenade", and "Dream of the Drowned Submariner".
Private Investigations, Money for Nothing, Romeo and Juliet, Telegraph Road are a few of my favorites from Dire Straits. Knopfler can play any type of music. His style is very easy to listen to. Peace!
Wife here..., I Absolutely loved this song as a tween.., In my Generation we had "(Safe Pop Rock").. 80's mostly.which was really great..,!!..This is one of the Best.!!..
A common theme in songs by Dire Straits is looking back with nostalgia ... in this case romanticizing the music of 50s-60s era, and earlier. As wiki says... The singer mentioned in the lyrics, "Johnny," is said to perform "down in the tunnels, trying to make it pay," a reference to busking in the subway. The songs he plays are oldies, including "I Got a Woman," "Be-Bop-A-Lula," "What'd I Say," "My Sweet Lovin' Woman," and "Mack the Knife." He also plays talking blues.
Mark Knopfler wrote this song to celebrate the street buskers of London, hence the references to "Be-Bop-a-Lula" and "What'd I Say," two standards that might be part of a singer's repertoire in the mid-'80s. The music video shown in America took a different approach: it showed sports bloopers. Stephen R. Johnson, a recent graduate of USC Film School, was the director. It was Mark Knopfler's idea to put sports in it, which was intercut with live footage.
The song was largely about a guy singing songs in the London Underground (subway) and it made lots of references to classic songs that he would sing. While this is the most famous video for the song, this one was made more for the American market (you will notice that the sports were American sports, while this is a UK based band), the original video which is hard to find is more literal to the song and shows someone playing music in the London Underground.
When I first started working in an ad agency, I also used to work in a bar Friday and Saturday nights. Whenever this came on the screens pretty much every guy in the bar would stop talking and watch this video.
Dire Straits is in my top 3 favorite bands. If you get a chance there is a beautiful song titled Tunnel Of Love, probably my favorite by them. Other hits are Romeo & Juliet, Telegraph Road (amazing story song and guitar), Expresso Love, Walking In The Wild West End, On Every Street, Skateaway, Your Latest Trick (live), & So Far Away. Also check out Mark Knopflers solo stuff, favorites include Prarie Wedding, The Car was The One, Cleaning My Gun, Long Cool Girl, Done with Boneaparte, & This Is Us (Duet with Emmy Lou Harris)!
Walk of Life is about, overcoming life's Hardships by not letting Things Get you Down Striding n Strutting thru Getting into a Steady Rythum n just keep walking
The song is about being awesome playing the guitar. The guitar is the woman ; power and glory means he's got whatever ''IT'' is.... like Johnny B. Goode The boy can play. they used sports to double meaning double talk...
There are som many great Dire Straits songs and Mark Knopfler, the lead guitarist, singer and songwriter of Dire Straits als had a lot of great songs in his solo career. Some more great Dire Straits songs are "Telegraph Road", "Tunnel of love", "Your latest trick" and "Calling Elvis", solo Mark Knopfler songs that are worth a listen are "Sailing to Philedelphia", "Coyote" and "Speedway at Nazareth" But There are to many songs to mention, Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists and songwriters ever.
The singer is "down in the tunnel trying to make it pay" -- he's a busker in the subway tunnels. The "song about a sweet-lovin' woman", the "song about the knife" and "the walk of life" are some of the songs he sings. "He do the Walk of Life" -- he "does" the song -- plays it.
I love the way you Brad look at Lex when she speaks. I can tell you really want to hear what she's saying and you respect her opinion about things, (even if she's totally nuts) about some things. But she's sooo cute! ❤️🤗😎🤔
The song is about a busker. "Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies, "Bee Bop a lula" "Baby What I Say"" Funnily enough, although this is the most popular version of the video, it's not the original. The original features a busker in a subway in the UK, "down in the tunnel try'na make it pay". Apparently Mark Knopfler spotted a young busker in a subway in London, facing the wall trying to get some reverb on his guitar. The original cover for the single has that image on it.
It’s about a musician busking in the street trying to find a path to fame and fortune. He’s out there doing the things, putting in the work, doing the walk of life. He’s got that hustle. “Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies, be-bop-alula baby, “What’d I Say?” Here comes Johnny singing “I Got A Woman,” down in the tunnel trynna make it pay. He got the action, he got the motion, oh yeah, the boy can play. Dedication, devotion, turning all the nighttime into the day. He do the song about the good lovin’ woman, he do the song about the knife. He do the walk, the walk of life, yeah he do the walk of life.
One day in high school, they used this song on the PA instead of the bell. The song was still new... until the end of the day when we were all sick of it! :-)
The song is about a street musician trying to earn a living playing for money on the streets. Some marketing exec thought it would be fun to insert all the sports clips for the American market since we obviously can't understand a song about real life for a street musician. The original British video actually tells the story of the song.
The song has been used in commercials and been used by quite a few sports teams over the years, before and during games. I think it's even been adopted by a few teams as their intro music as well.
This was my Dad's favorite song by his favorite band. I remember him tapping his feet to the tune and just getting really happy anytime it came on. This song holds a special place in my heart because of that. Thanks for reacting to it!
For kids of a certain age, this has to be the most Dad song of all time. I mean this in the most positive way.
This was one of my granny's favorite songs...she jumped on the rock and roll bandwagon really early, much to my grandpa's horror. I remember my grandpa had recently died about this time and this was one of the songs that brought her out of her (justifiable) depression at that point.
Walk of Life and Call Me Al where my dad’s favorite videos when I was a kid, hearing either song always cheers me up

"Single-handed Sailor' has always been a favourite, "Wild West End," "Communique," "On Every Street," "My Parties", etc.
Romeo and Juliet!!
Not just with Dire Straits, Mark Knoffler played on Jimmy Nails "Big River" & also you should also hear him do the Last Post for Soldiers.
Dire Straits is such a great band. Sultans of Swing live is a masterpiece.
Live at The Alchemy probably the best live performance of i have ever seen definitely
needs to be seen by you and anyone else as a matter of fact

There was a time when more CDs of this album were sold than actual CD players in the UK

Studio version is far superior in my opinion. Dire Straits' greatest moment.
Agreed, but there are at least 25-30 top 5 bands whenever you really start counting. ;)
Great old 70s Band. Guitarist and lead singer Marc Knopfler is one of the most accomplished around.
Definitely an 80s band. More albums, more hits, more tours and all their awards were in the 80s.

This is Dire Straits in up-tempo mood. It almost reminds me of an updated version of The Lovin' Spoonful from the 60s.
Just a happy feel to this tune, love it. I'd pick 'Money For Nothing' next myself as the next Dire Straits tune. Cheers.
Yes I would agree, probably their most famous hit.
With Sting on backing vocals
they already did money for nothing
Yes. Great brutal death metal song with satanic lyrics.
What I got is that in the walk of life you'll have many mishaps and failures but if you keep walking you'll find your way eventually.
Always liked dire straits. Mark Knofler is a great guitarist.

I saw him live about 18-20 years ago. He was a god, but I mostly remember how everyone in the audience got sad because he never played Local Hero

I was born to the Brothers In Arms album, literally.
Quite a few artists from the North-East of England had a good ol sportsfan American sound.
Money For Nothing, was a summer anthem when it came out. Cruising the beach boardwalk with it CRANKED on the stereo.

One day in high school, they used this song on the PA instead of the bell. The song was still new... until the end of the day when we were all sick of it! :-)
If there is one song I can recommend from Dire Straits, it's 'Romeo & Juliet'.
My favorite song by them...Thanks.
