Benny usually wrote the music, but Bjorn conceived of the rhythm when he was jogging one day. He heard his feet going Chicka-CHICK Chicka-CHICK Chica-CHICK. And it got him thinking about lyrics. They turned it into Take a CHANCE, Take a CHANCE, Take a CHANCE.

In the early Sixties, they were called promo films, and became a necessity for The Beatles, who were in the midst of Beatlemania. This helped satisfy the demand for a public appearance, so they started sending out promo films instead in order to satisfy their fans.

My parents were ABBA fans, so this was an early love of mine. I've grown up and love a lot of different music, but I still have an intense love for the beautiful music that ABBA created!
Thanks wiki “Take a Chance on Me" released jan 78. proved to be one of ABBA's most successful chart hits, becoming the group's seventh UK #1 (and third consecutive chart-topper in the country after "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and "The Name of the Game").[6] It was also ABBA's final #1 in the UK of the 1970s, and gives the group the distinction of being the act with the most chart-topping singles of the 1970s in the UK. It sold over 500,000 copies and was awarded a gold disc.[7] As of September 2021, it is the group's fourth-biggest song in the country with 950,000 chart sales (including 882,000 pure sales).[8] In the United States it reached #3 and was certified gold for one million sales.[9] The song peaked at #3 in Canada and West Germany as well.
Even the hardest rockers knew ABBA wrote some very catchy tunes. Often imitated, but no one ever duplictated their success, and world wide appeal. My favorite song by them is S.O.S.
Such a brilliantly structured song. The lyrics are superb, the melody is so catchy and the girls voices are on fire. One of my fav ABBA songs, I don't know why, it's just a perfectly catchy little tune.
Remember growing up with ABBA in the 1970s, which was very much a secret pleasure, because it was so uncool to be an ABBA fan at the time. Partly because your parents and grandparents also liked them at the time. They were one of the few "Euro Pop" bands to make it big in the UK. Their music was mocked at the time, until people tried to copy the songs, and found out that the music was far more difficult to play than they had assumed.
I loved Abba, heard them for the first time in the early 80,s liked then ever since and the two female's singers were beautiful 😍, Always like listening to them when they come on radio.
This band had everything musically, two power female vocalists who sounded nearly identical when they would harmonize. Two great composers in Benny and Bjorne. They had great melodies and great hooks
ABBA was huge in the '70s and early '80s as well as the Bee Gees. Disco era ('70s - early '80s). Disco died down during the mid '80s, morphed into other genres like Eurodance, dance house music in the '90s - current times. ABBA has a lot of hits from the '70s-early '80s, disco and Europop music. Song is about taking a chance on somebody you like.
I don't think it's a side-chick's POV, it's just a girl has her eye on a guy who was dating someone or has had a string of relationships, but is now single but feeling down and not looking for another one yet. ("If you're all alone, when the pretty birds have flown")
They dared an Acapella intro back in 1978.Long before accapella getting cool by Pentatonix and Home Free.Sticks in your mind.F-Abba!Very amusing reaction.Actually the lady got it right about the chronicle release period of this song.
Love the 70's disco vibe and ABBA was among the very best. The rhythm of this song is very unique, reminds me of a train, and the way they layered the voices is great. I think the song is about an old flame coming back.
Love that you did this song. It was before my time as well, I think I must have heard my mom listen to it? I had been family, oar enough with it that when the movie Mama Mia came out in the 200_, I immediately felt like singing along. Speaking of said movie, my daughter and I both developed a great love of most of the song by ABBA and said daughter is actually currently a mumble rap fan. This song and Dancing Queen are among the best songs by ABBA, although, I love many.
ABBA is mostly from the 70’s. They won Eurovision for Sweden in 1974. They performed Waterloo. The Eurovision performance of Waterloo from 1974 is on RUclips. Worth the reaction.
Yo this record has been a mainstay on British wedding dance floors since release, and is responsible for thousands of baby's being made. Drunk people are helpless against its power.
Brad and Lex: ABBA member Benny Anderson, in an interview said the lyrics “…take-a-chance…take-a-chance,” came from the sound he heard as he drove over a highway bridge and as the car’s tires travelled over each bridge segment joint and made a quick bumpity “take-a-chance” sound…and as he drove across another joint, “take-a-chance”…”take-a-chance”…”take-a-chance.” Much love to your program from Canada. -Diane, Vancouver, Canada. Isn't exactly Björn was in his jogging morning and feel that the sound tkt totaly with his steps gives the idea to the rhythm and eventually he wrote take a chance, chance, take a chance and the song was born
A legendary group with an incredibly loyal fan base. And their 'Voyage' avatar concerts are currently sending audiences wild in London with fans coming in from all parts of the world to experience it. ABBA are one of those 'stars aligned' groups. They were each well known musicians in their native Sweden so they were akin to a 'supergroup' but they formed organically. The best things often happen by accident and as a result of unlikely combinations. Each of the four had a different musical path. Benny had a love of traditional Swedish folk and Classical Music but had been in a Rock band. Bjorn too was a Folk based but his previous band had been borne out of the 'Skiffle' craze and was influenced by the harmonies of the 'Kingston Trio'. Agnetha was a teen star in Sweden with a mixture of Schlager and heartbreak ballads. Connie Francis is often cited as one of her influences. She was also writing her own material from a young age. Anni-Frid (Frida) had the most prior stage experience, joining her first band in 1958. She came from a Jazz, Swing and Big Band background plus had operatic training. So it was a mixed bag of talents, style-wise. But the men turned into a formidable song-writing and producing team while the women were an intriguing blend of vocal compatibility and contrast, depending on the song. It's something that can't really be manufactured as a Pop Svengali would never even think of pitching such a foursome together, regardless of their individual talent. P.s. Although this song got to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, it actually sold more copies in the USA than 'Dancing Queen', a chart topper.
So much talent, and beautiful vocals. My parents -- who both grew up with 50s rock & roll -- both enjoyed this band in the 70s, calling it a breath of fresh air for the decade, introducing it to my brother & I and we began to enjoy it right along with them.
Good observation Lex! This came out in 1978 at the same time as Bee Gees were insanely popular. ABBA weee HUGE as well and this song was a huge hit as well. It encapsulates the perfect pop sound which Benny and Bjorn perfected with their flawless studio production techniques. More ABBA guys!
I think this song is pretty simple in its meaning. She's into him, but he's not into her. She is saying that she hopes he will change his mind. I don't see any evidence in the lyrics that he has another girl.
I still remember this coming out when I was just a snot-nosed kid. A golden era for ABBA, and we lapped up every drop. Relistening 45 years later, it's amazing how many balls they dropped and got away with it. Because the SOUND seemed so new and captivating. And when you're ambitious enough and spinning enough plates, I guess some will get broken. The re-recordings for the movies address these shortcomings but fail to bottle the original magic.
This song came out in 1978. Abba is considered a pop group as is this song. They've got some really good music, such as "Knowing Me Knowing You", "One Man One Woman", Waterloo", "SOS", "Fernando", "The Name Of The Game", "Hole In Your Soul", "Eagle" and "I Do I Do I Do". There is , of course, (what I call a guilty pleasure) "Dancing Queen", but I'm more for traveling a road less traveled instead of the usual old worn path. This was a real delight, love this song and loved this reaction guys!
Most Americans just aren't aware how big ABBA was around the world back then. They were like royalty, especially in Sweden. Actually, they still are. They are always a good listen!
Great dance song from the late '70s. Recorded in '77, released in '78. It played at all the dances and yes, Lex, a total contemporary to the Bee Gees. They'd be in the top 10 of the charts often together. Just discovered you, just subbed. Great reactions. : )
The synthesizer was used quite a bit in the 70s particularly the Moog Synthesizer. Groups like Kraftwerk pioneers in electronic/techno (Autobahn 1974, great album and song), Tangerine Dream, Alan Parsons (I Robot 1977), Pink Floyd, Edgar Winter Group (Frankenstein 1973), and quite a few others were all using synthesizers.

Abba are legends and every thing you said is true.
They were huge in the UK
Speak for yourself, bud.
Brad & Lex, they were popular from 1974--1982 around the world.
... and always popular in 2024 !!!!
Grew up listening to ABBA, my parents played them all the time. Still listen to them today.
Abba was incredible, so many killer hits. Anything by them is worth a listen, but Waterloo and Fernando are both awesome.
Incredible hit machine band of the 70,s
Their formula of melodic riffs, hooks and incredible vocals laid their foundation..
Incredible back catalogue of ultra hits
It sold over 500,000 copies and was awarded a gold disc.[7] As of September 2021, it is the group's fourth-biggest song in the country with 950,000 chart sales (including 882,000 pure sales).[8]
In the United States it reached #3 and was certified gold for one million sales.[9] The song peaked at #3 in Canada and West Germany as well.
Definitely 70's.. Had to hide them as my guilty pleasure from my rocker buddies! LOL....great pop group!
Me too...lol
They are still two beautiful ladies..
Even the hardest rockers knew ABBA wrote some very catchy tunes. Often imitated, but no one ever duplictated their success, and world wide appeal. My favorite song by them is S.O.S.
Abba was a supergroup in the 70s and 80s. They were a worldwide phenomena.
Such a brilliantly structured song. The lyrics are superb, the melody is so catchy and the girls voices are on fire. One of my fav ABBA songs, I don't know why, it's just a perfectly catchy little tune.
Abba is so legendary. They hold a special place in my heart as one of my grandfathers favorite bands.
I'm a total thrash death metal head. This song, and SOS are there a best songs. SOS is simply brilliant.
This song takes me back to my senior year in high school (1978). Great memories!
Brad & Lex, their “Waterloo”, “Fernando”& "The Winner Takes It All" are next for you!!
Absolutely!
Assuming they haven't already done Dancing Queen.
@@dggydddy59 they reacted to that song
Love Waterloo!
@@mkmstillstackin
but They should be react "Waterloo" at the Eurovision Song Contest , to know how ABBA begin your worlwide fame
I loved Abba, heard them for the first time in the early 80,s liked then ever since and the two female's singers were beautiful 😍, Always like listening to them when they come on radio.
I'm a metalhead and I love ABBA, and I'm sure I'm not alone.
You're right this was the era at the same time as the BEE GEES. And the synths are ahead of their time!
Just enjoy this music. Huge group.
😆 My mom and aunt loved ABBA when I was a toddler. Disco days, '70s, early '80s. Dancing Queen was a huge song from ABBA, too.
I need to thank my mom... It was her who introduced me to ABBA.. For every song I hear from them her memory lives on.... Thanks Mom.
So talented pop perfection
I was just a kid during their heyday, but I always loved to hear them when they came on the radio.
One of the all time greats, ABBA a group in a class of their own.
My mom loved abba!
I miss you every day, mom!
❤️
This band had everything musically, two power female vocalists who sounded nearly identical when they would harmonize. Two great composers in Benny and Bjorne. They had great melodies and great hooks
ABBA was huge in the '70s and early '80s as well as the Bee Gees. Disco era ('70s - early '80s). Disco died down during the mid '80s, morphed into other genres like Eurodance, dance house music in the '90s - current times.
ABBA has a lot of hits from the '70s-early '80s, disco and Europop music.
Song is about taking a chance on somebody you like.
ABBA more biggest in Europe
Bee Gees more biggest in US
ABBA, much more europop
Bee Gees, much more disco
(at the same time, 1975/1981)
True that. "Lay All Your Love On Me" was a humongous dance hit. Dont believe me? Play it right now.ruclips.net/video/2seCB54Bv-c/видео.html
I don't think it's a side-chick's POV, it's just a girl has her eye on a guy who was dating someone or has had a string of relationships, but is now single but feeling down and not looking for another one yet. ("If you're all alone, when the pretty birds have flown")
ABBA ! You cant help but have fun with them.
Agnetha had a truly great voice, certainly up there with the great female singers of all time.
They dared an Acapella intro back in 1978.Long before accapella getting cool by Pentatonix and Home Free.Sticks in your mind.F-Abba!Very amusing reaction.Actually the lady got it right about the chronicle release period of this song.
I am a disco fanatic. I love me some disco! This is my favorite ABBA song it’s so fucking good
Still kills me how perfect they sound together
Love that you are now diving into ABBA!
Pete Townshend, guitarist of The Who, calls S.O.S from ABBA the best pop song ever written.
Quintessential ABBA ! That great sound! What a group! They made fantastic songs!
CLASSIC BAND
it's not a thirsty song at all.... it's about having a real deal crush
ABBA is mostly from the 70’s. They won Eurovision for Sweden in 1974. They performed Waterloo. The Eurovision performance of Waterloo from 1974 is on RUclips. Worth the reaction.
Brad is the only person in history not to smile during abn ABBA song:D.
Isn't exactly
Björn was in his jogging morning and feel that the sound tkt totaly with his steps gives the idea to the rhythm and eventually he wrote take a chance, chance, take a chance
and the song was born
I loved growing up with this music in the 70s. It's still great fun today, and I'm glad you're enjoying it, too.
If ya need catchy bubblegum pop, can't go wrong with Abba, they were masters at it.
Loved ABBA as a kid. You took me back. Oh the 70's, simpler times in many ways. Thanks so much. What great singers Agnetha and Frida were!
I was a teen when Abba came on the scene. They sold so many records because they appealed to all age groups and that is pretty rare.
ABBA recordings get 11/10 for production. Immaculate.
“Fernando” is my fave by ABBA 🔥
I love ABBA. My fav songs by them are S.O.S. and Knowing Me, Knowing You
I love the jerseys, very Swedish winter look.
perfect harmonies. Abba, one of the biggest selling bands of all time
Two of the best pop songwriters paired with two of the best voices.
Everyone loved ABBA, they were such a unifying force. and there music was excellent.
ABBA songs are earworm after earworm.
I think this song is pretty simple in its meaning. She's into him, but he's not into her. She is saying that she hopes he will change his mind. I don't see any evidence in the lyrics that he has another girl.
I'm Gen X and have four sisters who played the *hit out of ABBA Gold! So many of their songs are nostalgic to me.
Love this song from my teenagers years
Legends 👉ABBA👈 🙌
The synthesizer was used quite a bit in the 70s particularly the Moog Synthesizer. Groups like Kraftwerk pioneers in electronic/techno (Autobahn 1974, great album and song), Tangerine Dream, Alan Parsons (I Robot 1977), Pink Floyd, Edgar Winter Group (Frankenstein 1973), and quite a few others were all using synthesizers.
Pure God given talent!!...
I grew up with Abba, it was a bit uncool to like them back then but they only wrote good songs so I liked them. You could pick any Abba song and react to it, and it would be a great pop song.
A few years back a friend told me he was going through his CD collection and discovered something. I said that you secretly like ABBA. He said yeah how did you know. I replied because every guy our age secretly like ABBA.
@@jimgeorge9476 My friends called me. We are going to Gröna Lund, they told me. It is the big amusement park in Stockholm. For whatever reason I couldnt join them, and that is why I missed the last ever Abba concert in Sweden. Still haunts me, forty years later.
@@Steffe I belive the last one was in Radiohuset in 1981. Mostly Swedish kids in the audience, for some reason. But they recorded it for Dick Cavett show in the USA.
If you are ever in London ABBA Voyage is a must, it's spectacular awesome, out of this world, fantastic concert by the ABBATARS and the live band were brilliant as well, you will not be disappointed.
They get a bad rap as pop, but they were incredible songwriters. Not like today's pop acts.
So well said!
When we're talking about pop music, it certainly doesn't get much better than ABBA. Spectacular song writing indeed.
ABBA was definitely one of the top disco acts of the 70's and enjoyed a resurgence in fan base in the 2000's due to the Mama Mia! Broadway shows and movies. "Dancing Queen" has been used in so many movies and TV shows (usually during some comic dance segment).
All of their stuff is great
They were enormous in Australia . Dancing Queen was their best and still much loved by baby boomers !
When I was a youngster back in the 70s/80s, I used to hear this at the local carnivals. It does have a carousel vibe to it.
