@Glyn Harbinson Yes, Mark's fills are so melodic. I say "fills", but like yourself, it almost seems as if the singing is filling in the space between the guitar playing...rather than the other way round.

The song is pretty clear. Its about a singer trynna make it. Its a song with melody, no cursing and where they're actually singing and not talking with music. lol

You are in the presence of the genius that is Mark Knopfler. I can see that people have already suggested some of their absolutely brilliant songs. This one for me is pleasant and no more but my goodness watch them live from their Alchemy album. They will blow your mind with their astoundingly brilliant musicianship. Great to see you guys. Money for nothin was my favorite but I love all of their songs. It makes my toes tap.
The first five lines are actually the titles of hit songs from the 50s, including Be Bop a LuLa (Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps, 1957 I think)... they are what brings the emotion. Peace from Canada- be safe.

Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Sultans Of Swing", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.
I never knew they were English band omg all this time I believed they were American 🇺🇸 dam what a fool😂

@@s.mcpherson6354 He may have been born in Glasgow, Scotland, but he is definitely a Newcastle/North East Lad. His mother was from Blythe, his parents married in Newcastle, and they returned to Blythe when Mark was 7, where he was brought up and went to school. His team is Newcastle Utd and his 'Local Hero' theme is played at their home games. He sounds so Geordie that I was surprised when I heard he was born in Scotland.

I'm a filmmaker and we're always building budgets based on where the most expensive creative people come from, because then they come with tax credits on their huge salaries that can save millions. It's why there are currently so many Canadian movie starts. For Hollywood producers, a 25% tax credit and a 70 cent dollar saves a lot of dough in rebates on that 20 million dollar salary. That'll more than offset having to share the production with some Canadians. Scotland had their own fund and credit system (ours Canadian version traded talent 1 point for 1 point--there's treaties between countries on all this stuff), so I'd heard that's how he ultimately got the soundtrack for Local Hero. Lots of times you can really want someone, but you can't find a deal that includes their citizenship. Maybe you wanted Joaquim Pheonix a bit more than Ethan Hawke, but if you shoot in Australia or New Zealand Hawke, can save you big bucks. Although in this case, it may have been the story moved to fit Knopfler. That happens too, although more with stars, because they cost way more.
The original vid was a series of sporting flubs, through to the last chorus, whebn all the athletes start scoring. The message being get up from your setbacks and win through.
Only the US version, the rest of the world got a different video.

As a sports fan I absolutely loved that video. It did have some bloopers in it but then it had great moments like Roger Craig scoring in the Super Bowl, Lakers celebrating a title and The GOAT, M. Jordan with an iconic dunk.

A lot of the lyrics in this song are about other songs. Like some commenters here have said already, "the song about the knife" is likely in reference to 'Mack the Knife' by Bobby Darrin. Be-Bop-A-Lula is an old song by Gene Vincent, Sweet Lovin' Woman is a song by Dobie Gray, and Power and the Glory is both an old book and a song from the early 60s.
Don't forget, "Baby what'd I say" was a huge hit in 1958 for the late great Ray Charles.
This song was in TV commercial for the drug Farxiga. Maybe that's where you heard it. Commercials use all the good old songs!

Dire Straits will always hold a special place in my heart because after growing up listening to music on vinyl LP's, cassette tapes, and 8-track tapes, Dire Straits album "Brothers In Arms" was the first album I ever heard on a CD. It was almost like seeing a color TV for the first time.
This song was inspired by a busker in the British underground, the "tube". Yep we all do the walk of life! 🙂❤

'The line in the lyrics of this song that says, 'song about the knife' is a backward reference to one of Mark Knopfler's very early songs called 'Six Blade knife,' which was recorded on the Dire Straits debut album. The 'six blade knife' for Mark is the guitar - the part of the musician's life that earns his living and moves his career forward, but also the one that can 'cut both ways' in the rest of his life. Mark came back to this theme as part of a musician's life later, with one of Dire Straits' most famous songs, 'Romeo and Juliet.'
Love the backup vocals on this one and of course, the walking rhythm that makes it impossible to not move. Great reaction!

Great reaction. This is a great song , one of many from Dire Straits. Sentimental favorite is Down By the Waterline. One of the most musical, beautiful guitar players ever.
Highly recommend checking out some of knopfler’s solo stuff too, he’s a phenomenal storyteller.

Knopfler is one of my all time favorites! Dire Straights was great but he had so much great music solo. A couple recommendations, Back to Tupelo, Local Hero, and of course, Romeo and Juliet.
Great one. One of the three best from them. "Sultans of Swing" & "Money For Nothing" and there is more from this #1 top of the charts great band.
- ELP hit their peak in '74 with "Karn Evil 9" from the Brain Salad Surgery album which blew me away with every song getting better and better and better, starting with the beloved English church hymn "Jerusalem." which was sung at Princess Diana's Wedding. Next was the 1st ever recorded solo with electric drums in "Toccata"

That whole soundtrack is golden. My favorite track from it is the only one with a vocal, "The Way It Always Starts" sung by the late great Gerry Rafferty. I keep suggesting it but no one that I know of has reacted to it.

Aaaaawwwww. I love that song! My mother would play the Album in the car all the time when we were kids. We begged her (probably until her ears bled) to play the "organ song" - this one. It's just ... god, always makes me happy.
The whole album is amazing. Just go through it song by song, you won't be disappointed. But most definitely do "Brothers in Arms" (and, for me personally, "Why worry")

The lyrics in the verses are mostly references to old songs: "Be-Bop-a-Lula" was a hit in the 50s for Gene Vincent; "What'd I Say" and "I Got A Woman" are Ray Charles songs; "Sweet Lovin' Woman" is a Dobie Gray song (same guy who sang 'Drift Away'); "Walkin' Shoes" was an instrumental hit from the 50s and as others have said, "Mack the Knife" was a huge hit for Bobby Darin, who also sang 'Beyond the Sea'. Six Blade Knife is a song off of the first Dire Straits album, one of his early compositions. Your enthusiasm for this is refreshing. I haven't seen anyone suggest Ride Across The River by Dire Straits, the album version from Brothers In Arms is an immaculate sonic journey, live versions aren't quite as tight as the studio but still good. I would also enjoy seeing your reactions to some of Mark Knopfler's other incarnations - The Notting Hillbillies (1989-1999?) only one excellent album, mainly a pub band with several full length concert videos; With Chet Atkins (Neck and Neck); Solo with his band 1996-present (8? albums); with Emmylou Harris for an album and tour; and playing guitar for Bob Dylan on his Slow Train and Infidels albums in the 80's along with touring with Bob a few years ago and having some basement tapes out there. He also did movie soundtracks for The Princess Bride, Cal, Metroland and Wag The Dog. Dire Straits was the best selling band in the world in 1985 when Mark pulled the plug on the touring life after the Brothers In Arms tour. There's more but that's why Google came to be.

Don't quote me on this but there was a song in 1959 an instrumental called "Woo ooh " by the Rock-A-Teens ---the woo ooh's you here in this piece might be a tribute to that. Great show from both of you.
