Not every song is meant to be danced to. This is one of the best "soul songs" ever written and produced. The genius behind is is writer/producer Norman Whitfield.

This was from a brief period where the traditional "soul groups" had to change gears a little to keep up with the psychedelic trend, including longer songs.
It couldn't have been done better.

The guys playing the instruments (sessions players) were known as The Funk Brothers. World class musicians from the Detroit area who played on all the Motown hits from 1959 till 1972. Motown moved to LA and that was pretty much the end of Motown records.

Asia, I'm a semi pro songwriter. One of the first things I learned about lyric writing is-as long as you put an up-tempo beat to a song, you can write about almost anything (positive or otherwise). You and BJ are still fairly young. But people who like music and don't dance tend to concentrate more on the word content. Papa Was a Rolling Stone (1972) was a music changing release. It was released the same year as Marvin Gays What's Going On, Isaac Hayes' Shaft, Stevie Wonder's Music In My Mind & Talking Book albums. Curtis Mayfield released Superfly, and the Staple Singers released I'll Take You There. And this was only a very small amount of the music released that year. And these are some of the many reasons why people my age (I'm 69) aren't the least bit impressed by today's music. Love you & BJ----Keep on trucking!!!

Great comment, I'd like to add that Sly & the Family Stone's "There's a Riot Goin' On" was released the previous year and was tapped into that same vibe. Sly has was hittin' it hard around that time. Philly Soul was also coming on strong too with their great songs of empowerment and unity.

Having lived as a young man when this song came out, I can tell you that it was played in ALL the clubs ( gay, straight, black, white, mixed ), and people danced their butts off to it! I'm almost 79 now, and it still makes me want to groove when I hear the opening bars. BJ was feelin' it, and I do believe he has the right take on it: It's a 'reality' song, but still sends out a vibe that gets people up on their feet. The Temptations are hands down the best of the genre, and will never be equalled.

This was another time, when music spoke to real feelings and the words meant something. The difference between the sadness of the words and the groove of the music symbolizes how people find a way to survive adversity through the strength, faith and the resilience of their soul. You could dance to it and you could cry to it, it meant everything on all levels fearlessly. Most of the greatest songs and stories of all time speak about being beaten down, struggling, rising up, overcoming and surviving. It was deep, it was personal and it was real.

Ned from Spain stopping by to check in with you two beautiful people. This was all over the radio when I was a youngster in in 1972. Everybody knew this song and could quote bits from it. Harlem's own Norman Whitfield, was part of the new breed of writer/producer who brought that dark but real edge to Motown. Once Marvin Gaye hit big with What's Goin On Berry Gordy finally got the message that music could say something even protest and still sell. That was funny when the long instrumental freaked you both out. Stay healthy

This song still gives me the chills up and down--the groove is so tight and hot. But yeah, the lyrics tell a tough story that the family was trying to come to terms with--tryin to keep it real. I had this on a 45 and played it on my little portable record player (with built in speakers) constantly. The radio gave it massive airplay too. Funky groovy stuff that was right on.
The "Papa" in this story, uh...not so much🤨 However, if you heard this a lot, the story becomes familiar enough to overlook the lyrics and the music just prevails, so you WOULD dance to it -- for sure😂

This track isn’t supposed to be about dancing , it’s about making a musical social comment. The Temps started making these types of psychedelic or progressive soul tracks ,around 1968 when Dennis Edwards replaced David Ruffin, & released “cloud nine ‘ Album & single . By 1972 when Norman Whitfield suggested the Temps record “Poppa was a rolling stone “ Dennis & the rest of the Temps didn’t want to record any more psychedelic soul tracks , but Norman convinced them it would be a hit , so they begrudgingly went ahead & recorded it . The rest is History it won a Grammy .

BJ you nailed it in your post song speech. My best friend from childhood to the age of 16, was black, and never met his father, but knew who he was. This song always pissed him off.

I love your assessment. The music is incredible. The lyrics are soul crushing. I remember when it first came out and how deeply it affected me.

The song predated disco music, it was a masterwork by the Temptations. I remember hearing the extended version for the first time, it blew my eleven year old self away in 1972….

I grew up when this song came out. My father was somewhat of a rolling stone, as well. Family life was starting to shift as fathers were not in the home as much.

This is one of the best Temptations songs ever recorded by the group, This version is the single 45 version of the song while the album version is much longer in length. Be sure to listen to the song Masterpiece- it also has a long intro and the album version is longer than the 45 version.
