When Mel Brooks wanted to make that movie, he asked for George Lucas’ blessing. Half because of professional curtesy, half because of legal concerns.
Lucas loved the idea and gave Brooks access to his Special Effects company (explaining the high production quality, for the time).
The only restrictions was that they couldn’t sell any merchandise, and Lone Star couldn’t look like Han Solo. Because Brooks is Brooks, he made the merchandising joke and he dressed Lone Star like Indiana Jones.

This movie and all Brooks movies have tons of movie parodies, meme style jokes, and one-off jokes with sometimes long setups, such as naming the colonel Sanders so they could say, “What’s a matter, Colonel, chicken?” to which he practically crows when flustered, at one small moment in the movie. I never even noticed the Kafka joke until I had to read the book Metamorphosis in school. “Prepare for metamorphosis. Ready, Kafka?” The joke was only two seconds long. There are tons of these micro-jokes and Brooks is one of the only directors I know that does them in movies. It certainly gives his movies a style.

I worked at the local medical school as an A/V tech, and there was another A/V department. They took care of the school nursing auditorium. We figured out the combination to use the podium, and when Spaceballs came out, they change the combination to the podium because the code to the podium is 12345. We laughed so hard about that.

Just a note on two of the actors. Tim Russ, most famous for place Tuvok in Star Trek Voyager, has admitted there have been times he regretted his small role as the Spaceball "combing the desert" with an afro comb, mostly because he had grown weary of people coming up to him and telling him, "they ain't found sh*t!"
Second, though he has been retired for years, I'll always remember Rick Moranis for his part in one of the greatest hidden jokes in cinema history. They joke? In Ghostbusters, Moranis' character, Louis Tully, is destined to become Vince Clortho, the Keymaster of Gozer. Not that you'd know if from looking at him, particularly given the Keymaster was forever locking himself out of his own apartment.

45:00 The movie generally is a STAR WARS (1977) parody, or, more accurately, a parody of the first three STAR WARS movies made in 1977, 1980, and 1983 -- Episodes IV, V, and VI.
Blowing up the ship with a countdown and explosion is a STAR TREK II - WRATH OF KHAN (1982) movie trope.
Michael Winslow of POLICE ACADEMY (1980) did his sound effects gags.
They punched up the desert scene with music from LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962).
The alien hatching from the man's chest is an ALIENS (1980) reference (and they hired the same actor!)
The hatched alien singing and dancing to Ragtime Gal is a 1950s LOONEY TUNES reference.
The little Jawa-like critters (the Dinks) that help Lone Starr and our heroes, sing THE COLONEL BOGEY MARCH from the movie BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI (1957).
When the heroes appear in the temple, there is a great effigy of Yogurt, and he is behind it, and the heroes resemble the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, Dorothy, and the Scarecrow from THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939).
The TEMPLE OF DOOM is an INDIANA JONES reference.
Many of the silly movie antics (turning off the film by mistake, bumping into the camera, and so forth) are gags reminiscent of the movie THE KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE (1977).
The transformation of the ship into a maid with a vacuum cleaner is a TRANSFORMERS (1982) reference.
The Liberty Head/Torch on the beach with the apes on horseback is a PLANET OF THE APES (1968) reference.

Another great comedy and parody of Star Wars. Just so much fun. Brooks admired Lucas and wanted permission to parody the film. Lucas while filming his own comedy with Howard the Duck (also super fun film), agreed-but only on the condition that no Spaceballs merchandising be made available. Made fun of in the film. Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks turned down the role of Lone Starr, the Han Solo-esque lead of the film. Pullman said that hiring Rick Moranis and John Candy freed Brooks up to cast him, a relative unknown. In the end Lucas loved it and so did we all. Thanx so much, Peace
