The ONLY sad part about this video is you missed the greatest solo ever recorded that they cut out at the end . Watch the full live version you wont be sorry . Keep them coming guys and i think your both great : )
Have to totally agree, the solo at the end makes the song. By not hearing it in full is like just stopping the song mid track.
Listen to the whole solo at the end and I guarantee your reaction will be "I wish it was longer"
AGREEEE cut one of the best solos in history!!
For sure need to listen to the full song. His picking style is amazing
Omg you kinda ruined this song by choosing the wrong video! You missed the best part!!
It's Mark Knopfler on lead guitar and vocals. He's amazing. "The lyrics were inspired by a performance of a jazz band playing in the corner of an almost empty pub in Deptford, South London. At the end of their performance, the lead singer announced their name, the Sultans of Swing; Knopfler found the contrast between the group's dowdy appearance and surroundings and their grandiose name amusing."
Carol: I was there !! Wow, blasts from the past .And yes, I can confirm the 'almost empty' pub was indeed almost empty, what a shame we wern't lol. Thank you my new best friend..in NZ now. Willy.
@@williammcgechie4504 That's cool! Were you one of the young boys fooling around in a corner, who didn't give a damn about any trumpet playing band, cause it ain't what you called rock and roll? Or the other group?
Mark Knoffler is definitely in a class all by himself. His picking style is completely unique.
@@jackgilchrist ha ha ! The other group murdering a Duke Ellington number ..at least I THINK it was, but the Sultans, the Sultans played creole...creole.
Thank you all for sharing your stories -- It makes hearing this song extra special.
You know, I am just a grumpy old man, but when I watch you kids listening to "my" music, and having the same reaction I had when I first heard it, you really put a smile on my face.
Keep up the good work, kids!
My thoughts exactly. And my same description.
Same goes for me.
@@saveriosalemme5366 And me.
YES!
exactly how I feel. i love watching your videos, keep it up
One time Prince (whom I’m totally in love with) was asked “What does it fee😢like to be the best guitarist “ and in a Prince way answered “ask Mark Knoffler”. That’s class❤
Wow
That seems very unlikely to be true. What is your source for this statement?
@@RhiannonFan What is the source of your scepticism?
@@MorningNapalm Fed by a stream of blatant stupidity.
This quote has long been attributed to Eddie Van Halen and his response was, “ask Steve Lukather“.
You seriously need to watch a version that does not cut off the outro. This version is a bloody war crime.
Agreed. He really tears it up.
Amber needs to hear the second solo
Yep you cut the guitar solo off when he was just getting going!
That's the truth.
@@simonlucas5213 I agree I was waiting for both their heads to explode when he hit those triplets.
Mark ducked into a dive bar in England to get out of the rain. It was almost empty, but the band still rocked the place. He said they couldn't be any farther away from being sultans, but they were playing for the love of playing. You hit it on the head he's describing the band. He does it perfectly, you can picture them.
This version cuts one of my favorite lines, that sort of reinforces your impression. The line refers to a group of young boys in the corner... "They don't dive a damn, about any trumpet playin' band. It ain't what they call rock & roll"
It may not be one of the best lines in a rock song but, 'You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords
Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
They said an old guitar is all, he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing"
just written so well, its like you know George and the guy just wants to play good guitar and not be the show off hero. 🤷♂️
You both are right
I'm glad you pointed out "They couldn't be further".
I've read so many romanticised versions of this story.
They were shite but they loved it.
Really, that's all that matters.
@@jen_alanfromchicago53
The George and Harry being referred to here are George Young and Harry Vander from arguably the most successful Aussie 60's band "The Easybeats". George Young is the older brother to Malcolm and Angus Young of AC/DC fame. Can't be certain, but I think the line "Savin' it all, for Friday night" is a reference to the Easybeats' biggest hit "Friday on my Mind".
I know its been a year, but if you don't revisit this song and play the full version so you can truly appreciate the solo that Mark lays down at the end, the universe will fail to align, civilizations will crumble, empires will fall!!!
In the 2-3 years they've been doing this, I don't think I've EVER seen them go back and re-visit a song (there's been quite a few where people have practically begged them to), with the exception of a few songs Jay reacted to by himself, when he had first started doing them, then later with Amber participating.
@@screwyootube1 they dont care about the few viewers that wanna see it again lol. they're in it for the money and most of the songs they claim to have not heard, they have in fact heard.
This song was based on an actually night out. The band members car broke down on a rainy night and the ended up in a pub. The band was playing to a practically empty house. They were still playing their heart out for the love of the music.
The Sultans of Swing, Harry and George, were George Young and Harry Vanda, who went on to be the Easybeats, George Young is the older brother of Angus from AC/DC
Edit this isn't true I just found out
@@pietzsche really? i'd love to read anything confirming this. it just doesn't fit their type of music
@@JimTsoukas no you're correct, it's a myth I just looked for it and found an interview with Knopfler where he talks about it and it was just a random band he found funny
This is one of THE classics. Mark Knopfler is a world class guitarist.
master of the fill
He is truly underrated but this song you get to hear his finger picking skills
Right up there with David Gilmour, Santana and Clapton....
Too bad this video cuts it short.
You're missing their greatest performance of this song... "Sultans of Swing" at Alchemy Live, 1978! Extended version, nearly 11 minutes, with an amazing guitar solo.... Everything was MAGIC! The band and the audience were feeling it. This version is so special... with the perfect foil of the lead singer's unique vocal style against the music, the artistry on his guitar, the bass deftly coordinating the pace... building and building as the song goes on, and spurred on by incredible drumming... it is a masterpiece that comes to a monumental and melodic climax to the cheers of the audience! Dire Straits really nailed it that night, giving one of the BEST live performances featuring guitars and drums ever! Credit to the artists... frontman Mark Knopfler on lead guitar and vocals, David Knopfler on bass guitar, and Terry Williams on drums. PLEASE watch this Alchemy Live one where Mark is in headband and red jacket: ruclips.net/video/8Pa9x9fZBtY/видео.html ....You'll see AND hear what I mean!
It’s out of this world!
The drummers father was in the audience for the first time ever and he was playing on another level.
SPOT ON, J.S! An EPIC performance that must be seen. Jay - Mark Knopfler is going to melt your "stankface" off with the guitar solo in this vid - you GOTTA see it!
That drummer was the hardest working guy on the planet ! And i love Mark Knopfier on guitar but as a bass player i can listen to that bass line over and over again . The song is just perfection from start to finish :)
Yeah this version is chopped up and edited and a complete mess.
YES! I was so excited to see this come up but then crestfallen that it wasn't the definitive version! Even so...it's awesome as is
There are some songs that shouldn't be shortened. The fact there's even a version of this song without the last solo is almost criminal.
It almost makes me laugh, or cry, judging this song by omitting the final part, which is one of the 5 most beautiful solos in the history of the guitar..... it's murder...
This video you found faded out criminally early, right at the start of the guitar solo that made stars of Mark Knopfler and Dire Straights. p.s. Part of Knopfler's unique sound is that he "finger picks", i.e. he doesn't use a plastic pick, instead he uses the nails on several fingers of his right hand. This means he can create a much more complex sound - to me this gives his sound a unique blend of spanish guitar and rock. p.p.s. I suggest you ignore the "alchemy tour version" recommendations: you want to be familiar with the original before you listen to reimagined versions enjoyed by some fans.
ruclips.net/video/8QuTGYHh9jg/видео.html
I agree that we should listen to the studio versions first but in this case they can hardly do a first reaction to the studio version any more. That bird has flown. So now, to repair some of the damage, it is time to listen to the alchemy version of Sultans. It is astonishing enough to still merit a first reaction.
@MrSwanley I agree, they faded that video out apparently for time, but the ensuing guitar solo IS A MUST. Whoever edited this video figuratively should be shot.
DO NOT ignore the Alchemy version. it doesn't compete with the sutdio version, it is a completely different experience. One does not take away from the other.
@@dawnelle730 No, that is an awful 'video' with poor sound - this is the one to watch. The once with the actual video! ruclips.net/video/8Pa9x9fZBtY/видео.html
I couldn't imagine that there was actually a version of this song without THE solo. One of the most recognizable and technically difficult guitar solos of all time. You guys owe it to yourself to re-listen to this song in it's entirety!
Yes! I was so disappointed when the video faded out fist as it was about to get amazing
Totally agree, whoever chop edited this video should be shot. Why bother posting it.
AND, you guys owe it to all your followers to atone for your grave error (because you didn't know) by doing the Alchemy Live version.
Hear your public. I know you can’t do a first reaction now to the unvandalised version. That is your loss. Trust us and react to the Alchemy version. It would be fantastic to watch you listen to that. I promise you, you will thank us.
Technically difficult? It's barely intermediate in terms of technicality. It's amazing, but it's not technical at all. Zappa, Vai, and Malmsteen are technical.
Knopfler's guitar is so fantastic in this song that the drums are frequently overlooked. They absolutely crackle. Just astonishingly good.
Dire Straits is their own genre. Extremely talented.
As others have said, watch the Alchemy Live version. Completely different experience and well worth the re-listen. The drummer goes nuts.. you get to hear the full version of the song.. and how much fun they all have playing live together.
The drummer had me smiling and shaking my head :-D
Yes please! Was disappointed when it wasn't the live version. They must hear it!
Dam Strait! Criminal to listen to this truncated studio version and not the real, live deal.
I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY CUT OFF THE LAST SOLO. Do the whole version please.
Yes that end solo is the best part.
Yes, you missed one of THE best guitar solos of ALL time...
Missed the very best part of the whole thing ... THE solo
Hey....it was probably an MTV thing.
They didn't cut it. This is the full studio version that they're lip-syncing to in, I think, The Old Grey Whistle Test studio.
The full live version is SICK....love this tune!
Respect for how well you understood the story and the subtly of how the band in the pub was at peace with being less popular than they deserved to be. Impressively perceptive. The story and the unique guitar riffs make this a really special song.
*on the FIRST listen.
Their live version of 'Sultans of Swing' from Alchemy is mind blowing!
Check it out if you get a chance. I would give a lot to have been at that performance: guitar and drum work was unreal: ruclips.net/video/8Pa9x9fZBtY/видео.html
Oh yes! Whenever I watch that, I wish I could have been there...!
I can’t believe the finale solo was missing? That’s stright up criminal! I feel sorry for you guys! Check out the last solo. It’s god sent!
AgGG! How do you cut that song short???!!!!!!! Listen to the Outro Solo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They were robbed, we were robbed. Call the police because who ever cut out that outro committed a crime and we are all victims.
Oh Lordy, ya'll need to go back and hit that last guitar solo. It'll change your life :)
Stinkin' 45 version probably. Did that with Perfect Strangers too.
@@ronlackey2689 They will never know, because there is no indication that they bother to read the comments here.
I saw them back in 85 - they were great. An old workmate was bass player in Mark's first band - he had a daytime job and he quit the band when they went pro (he was doin' alright) - listen for the lyric... I have no reason to doubt his story - after all, I've played with a member of King Crimson in a pub in Dorset (only found out after) and our bands old drummer was in Eddy Grant's first band. That bass player passed away recently and I always think of him and wonder when I hear this song.
One of my favorites. The lead singer plays the hell out of the guitar with a unique voice
Best version of Sultans of Swing is at Alchemy ,
Played the whole set without plectrums and their drummer is outstanding.
Mark Knoffler lead guitar plays right hand guitar but is left handed.
Listen to the live performance of this at Alchemy and you will see them really play this.
Agreed. You must check out the Alchemy performance. Best 11 minutes you'll spend in quite a while.
@@bobbrogley1033 Absolutely. The person suggesting this song without specifying the Alchemy Live version should be banned from RUclips for life.
Mark Knopfler has never really been given the accolades he deserves. Simply a wonderful guitarist!!
Glad you didn't use the "U" word!
hahhaah are you joking right .. everyone knows he up there with the best guitar player's in the world
@@raven-kh1dx oh I agree. But when "best guitarist" listscare made he is seldom on one..
Screw accolades, it's all fluff.

No, they don’t. I get precisely what they mean. Those who know guitar know.
Alchemy live version is the one with the EPIC guitar solo. You won't regret watching that version, it's one of the best live performances of all time.
Watch the Alchemy gig!!
There are still heaps of us oldies round that will argue for Mark as the best guitarist ever.... The unique sound was from finger picking sytle of playing... very masterful and hard to learn! On very good HD recordings you can hear his fingers bounce across the strings. So amazing
OMG couldn't believe this version cuts out just as Mark starts his closing solo guitar riff. Definitely go check out the Alchemy live version, you'll get a full solo at the end.
You absolutely have to check out Sultans of Swing live at Alchemy!
The guitar solos are crazy.
It’s one of my favorite live performances.
Once you watch it at Alchemy, there no more better version of the song !
Definitively!
Telegraph road on alchemy 🔥
That and the Nelson Mandela concert one, too.
Yes that live concert is fantastic
The song is about the Jazz scene in London, probably during the 60's, 70's. The bands then didn't get paid very much, so everyone had a day job.. they'd never rehearse, "but savin' it up for Friday night" .
I went to many of these shows back in the day... The band would play from 8pm to 4-5am in the morning. It was a magical time, sadly missed.
Amber,
you need to listen to another version of this to hear the last most beautiful guitar solo on the song. Also, you are so right on your interpretation of the song...just a bunch of guys playing because they love to play irregardless of the audience...they have other jobs. Also, the beautiful sound that Mark puts out is due to the fact that he plays with his fingers (no pick), much like Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac.
Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing (Alchemy Live) is the one that you need to see next. It is a 10 minute version with epic instrumentals. The guitar work at the end of this version is just the beginning of a magical solo.
This version cuts it out - this version really sucks. The Alchemy Live version adds a lot more, plus the fantastic drumming missing in this chopped up version.
Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Sultans Of Swing", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.
"Skate Away" is a funky tune....
All of their songs tells a story
"Expresso Love"
Lady writer
So Far Away is a banger!
Mark Knoffler, the lead guitar in this band has his own special sound (as you can tell) and voice and they stepped up and captured the world of Rock music for a time and brought something new and exciting to the world. It's great to see people currently be excited by yet another signature sound and style.
One of the best guitar solos of all time. Mark Knopfler is a very underrated guitar player with his own style and sound who plays with flair. Excellent choice for an all time classic!👍👍😎😎🔥🔥
You guys have to hear the full version of this song! The video you watched had the ending cut off. The guitar solo at the end of the song goes on for much longer and gets even more mind blowing!
Yes , this seems to be a filmed performance that was mainly spliced into a Top Of The Pops Broadcast, cut short for the DJ to talk over the ending, While the video is good, listening to the full track ( 12in or 7in) is worth it just for the ending .
I know, and some radio stations fade out that perfect long solo. I think like Chet Atkins he uses a clean tone with minimal distortion. Why I always liked jazz guitar.
Yes, indeed! You guys have been cheated by not hearing the full guitar at the end!
The solo at the end which was cut from this video... WOWOWOW. Its AMAZING.
Such a phenomenal track
Yes, too bad it was cut.
They really missed out, I was waiting for that point!
Agreed that’s the best part of that song, my step dad (RIP) introduces me to the song and now it’s a great tribute when I play it
Knoffler's guitar is perfection. He is one of the most nuanced guitar players on the planet. There is so much subtlety in his playing that translate to his unique and gorgeous sound. I still cannot believe how sublime this song is.
Knopfler is a self taught genius, how you come from nowhere with a technique all your own and know one out of the state (never mind the park) He plays without a plectrum so its all picked, hence the percussive control he has over each note. (the short melodic runs are called a fill) Its a shame they cut the last minute off, its epic. Listen to Lady Writer and Romeo and Juliet, both fabulous.
Sometimes you pick the wrong version and it’s painful to know what y’all are missing. This song played live for Alchemy is one of the greatest live recordings of any group. Also check out Brothers in Arms and Telegraph Road by Dire Straits.
Romeo and Juliet etc. There's quite a back catalogue. oddly enough, Walk of Life is the one that left me cold.
A big yes to both Brothers in Arms and Telegraph Road. BiA shows a totally different side of Knopfler, quiet and introspective but with an emotional punch. TR tells the story of the rise and fall of Detriot, so it's great social commentary.
ruclips.net/video/8QuTGYHh9jg/видео.html
This song is based on a true story about walking into a bar a listening to a band named Sultans of Swing. You definatly need to listen to the long version “Sultan of Swing live at Alchemy” there is another fabulous guitar solo section that is one of the best you will hear a total classic.
Yeah. Much longer outro.
Even this version had the solo chopped off at the end. I don't know who did this, maybe a radio station or something back in the day? but up until a week ago I had never seen this abortion of a video where the lead solo is completely missing from the end.
You need to watch the Alchemy live version if you liked the solo. It is much longer and is one of the most beautiful guitar solos you will ever hear.
@@squaaaaak3178 I know right. I was thinking - wait until they hear the end, then it was just that bare little bit and even that they were excited about - what a shame they couldn't hear the best part. I was not a huge Dire Straits fan, but this one sets just such a great mood and was always one I would stop and listen to when it was on the radio. Haven't thought of it in a while. Now have to go off and find a version that doesn't cut off the end...
@@squaaaaak3178 This version really sucks. They should do the Alchemy Live version.
Mark Knopfler actually made his own guitar style. He doesn't use a pick but rather a hybrid of thumb and finger that he created for himself. Probably that's why his sound was always unique.
He idolized Chet Atkins. Chet plays the same way and he got it from Merle Travis. Tommy Emmanuel also idolized Atkins.
Chet could play the lead of one song and the bass line of another at the same time. He was arguably the greatest guitarist ever, and he said Jerry Reed was better than him.
YOU ABSOLUTELY need to see the Live Version..OHMYGAWD, he's on another planet with that guitar!!!!
Mark Knopfler, lead vocals and a unique guitar style. He doesn't use a pick. One of the very best.
Such a talented band. This was their first hit and it didn’t sound like anything else on the radio at that time. It blew up huge. Love it! Thanks!
Hit the airwaves really with the likes of Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello, Buzzcocks and so on. Also at the same time as Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy came out on Radio 4. Both had a dark night under the duvet and stars feeling about them
Diane Lynn I loved it from the first time I ever heard it, and listen to the original quite frequently
even now at age 76! The 'gold standard' however is from the Alchemy Live Concert ( 1978 ). Rob and Amber really need to air this if for nothing but pure enjoyment.
His name is Mark Knopfler, He comes from the North East of England, where I live. His guitar is a Fender Stratocaster which gives it the particular tone!
Mark was born in Glasgow, Scotland
even if you dont try the extened live version, you HAVE to hear the full unedited album version ,like everyone elsehas said, the the closing solo is a game changer. it takes an already great song and turns it into an anthem, the song that every fan is chanting the title of at concerts!
Yeah this version cuts out my favorite verse and the amazing outro solo. The missing verse explains that there are some kids messing around and not caring about this amazing music on stage. I think its about how there are amazing musicians everywhere that aren't famous and just playing local bars because they have other priorities, and nobody really pays attention to them.
Totally agree. The song is poorer for the lack of those boys in their best brown baggys and their platform soles who don't give a damn about no trumpet playing band, and is almost lost without that last soaring solo.
Mark Knopfler is in my top 5 guitarist. He gets so much expression and feeling out of his guitar. He did the soundtrack to 'The Princess Bride', his 'soothing' sound is one of the reasons that movie works so well.
I think that sound he was talking about is from Mark using his fingers instead of a pick.
The melody in this song is not just a melody, it is art at its finest.
It's an excellent song and yet so simple: he's basically just introducing a band!
Sultans of swing is definitely a kick-ass song
You will ALWAYS know when you're listening to Dire Straits because of Mark Knopfler's distinctive guitar sound/style.
You absolutely must revisit with the Alchemy live version of this. What you reacted to is the studio live version and it cut off the end of the song. Mark Knoffler is an awesome guitarist. PLEASE!!!
This is the 3rd comment about this, I will definately watch this version Thx!
I just watched that version Thank you it was AMAZING the intro and outro Rocks and the version was just to the right of this one on the middle of this page. Thx!
I saw this band live in DC back in the early 80's. It was one of the best concerts I ever went to. Mark Knopfler is a genious on guitar.
Not in 1978 when it when public ?
Man, this version faded out much quicker than the album version. There's a lot more to that solo at the end.
Agreed. They missed the best part at the end. They would have loved the fast solo.
Agreed. That version cut out the best part of the song, the outdo solo!
That final solo is awesome
My favorite line "... And the Sultans ,yeah the Sultans, play Creole"
Yeah, they got robbed....
Mark Knopfler is a master of finger picking. This gives his playing a softer "attack ". He's so underrated that it's near criminal.
Seems I recall this song had deep roots in Middle Eastern, Arabian music. Can't remember the scale employed however.
Mark Knopfler is not and has never been underrated by ANYBODY
Master guitarist. I agree his finger picking style on electric guitar was one of the most unique styles I've ever known. Brilliant. I've seen many, many electric guitar players as I'm an old boomer born in the middle of the 20th century. lol
That's true. Too few of them. Jeff Beck, John Mayer, Paul McCartney(can) plus my favourite Lindsey Buckingham.
@@Xipify Do a search for Chet Atkins and you will see where Mark Knopfler got his inspiration from with his picking/playing
It doesn't really fade out like that. The guitar work you didn't hear is jaw-dropping. I hope you listen to the full version very soon.
I don’t usually watch reaction vids, but this song warrants it because it’s a song I wish I could hear for the first time again. Great deep thoughts you guys gave and I loved hearing how it affected you. Sadly the final guitar solo is cut short in the music video which is a crime against music. Strongly recommend listening again to the full version (5:47) because that last guitar solos really makes the song all that much better, it’s one of the best instrumental moments ever recorded
Now you should react to the longer live version of “Sultans of Swing,” played at the HAMMERSMITH ODEON, LONDON, in 1983 (released 1984 on the album ALCHEMY: Dire Straits Live). It’s one of the best live rock performances ever. All the band members are truly amazing.
Absolutely. Really wish they would have listened to that one first. Iconic.
Drummer goes nuts! lol.
Ok guys, the guitar solo at the end goes on longer than the video you saw - check it out - quite beautiful!
Also, this is from their first album - they were practically kids.
And last but not least, check out Pick Withers on the drums!!!
YES! Y’all need to hear the full solo at the end!
Came here to say same. The video cuts out about another minute (at least) of guitar at the end of the song.
Glad you mentionned it. Even though videos were great when the whole MTV phenomena began, the shorten versions really bugged me.
The Guitar Style of Mark Knopfler is unique , he was living in a house share in London and learned to play the guitar on a second hand guitar with only 5 strings , so to get around it he plucked the strings like a banjo , and has carried the style with him to this day, you can see if you watch on the close ups he plucks not strums
Knoppfler is just a wonderful guitarist. Even my Mum loved this and she was born in 1922.
Brothers in Arms is a must listen. Slightly different to this, much more sombre and emotional but still, a masterpiece.
Totally gotta hear that one.
Came here to say this
1.so far away 2.money for nothing 3.walk of life 4.Your latest trick 5.why worry 6.Ride across the river 7.The mans too strong 8.One world 9.Brothers in arms
J, you commented on Mark's guitar sound. It's basically a classic Fender Stratocaster (brand & model of his guitar) sound with very little effects added. I think it was the clean, simple sound of his guitar that first drew me to this song many years ago.
Amber, you are correct about the band playing for the love of playing. One of the lyrics says "Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene, he's got a daytime job he's doing alright"
I agree
was lucky enough to have seen them live back then. they were fantastic. he was one of the best guitar players of his time
LOVE THIS SONG! Totally reminds me of the beginning of my teen age years! My life seemed like a dream world back then in the late 70's!
My Dad loved this album...he wore out the cassette in his car stereo. We played it wherever we went. "Six Blade Knife" and "Southbound Again" are two great tracks from this album
Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists of the last 50 years. His band Dire Straits crushed it in the late 70's and all the 80's
YA BUUUUT this was the 70s
You need to watch the full version of this song live
THE END SOLO!!! I can’t believe the music video would cut that part off! Great reaction, legendary song. 🤘🏼
Mark doesn't use picks. That he finger picks the strings give him a unique sound.. We noticed that also when we heard him for the first time.
I scrolled down to see if anyone said this. Yes, he uses no picks. These guitars are setup to his request, The amp, guitar, and finger style playing makes his unique sound.
Not to mention he’s left -handed but plays right-handed.
Just like Lindsay Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac. Check out some of his guitar solo compilation videos on RUclips. Never a pick.
@@centuryrox Oh yes. Big Love. OMG.
Might be wrong, but believe this style is called chicken pickin'
Experts like to talk about Knopfler playing "clean" notes. His solo is very melodic. The second one on the outro needs to be heard in its entirety. It's what gave Knopfler a reputation as a guitarist.
I agree. It's been mentioned that Knopfler was heavily influenced by JJ Cale, very clean but not overdone. You can just mellow out with the laid back groove and listen to the song's story.
Knopler, from what I remember, played lead with the thumb/fingernail style that jeff Beck often used. (and watching the video I see now that's exactly what he was doing)
That Fender Stratocaster sound is classic. And these kids grooving as always.
His sound comes from him using his fingers and his nails he doesn’t use picks
One of the top ...probably 5 guitarists in history.
ruclips.net/video/8Pa9x9fZBtY/видео.html this is a good version
Okay, I’ve tried to get you two to take a look at this band live (the best live videos are the Alchemy Tour ones) and I have to say that until you’ve seen one of those videos, you haven’t even scratched the surface of how good this band was. The live version of Sultans of Swing (Alchemy Tour) is one of the best ever live performances by any band ever and that is not just my opinion, but has been stated by many hundreds of people who’ve watched it. There are also many, MANY songs by them that show off their incredible musicianship, as well as Mark Knopfler’s amazing abilities as a lyricist. Of course his guitar work is outstanding, but the rest of the band are equally as outstanding and the best place to see this is with the Sultans of Swing live version, but that is true also of Telegraph Road, Tunnel of Love, Romeo and Juliet, and many more. You are really missing out if you don’t take a look at some of these incredible performances. Seriously!
Released in I believe 1977 this was a big radio hot.
Kinda sounds to me like Moorish/Spanish upbeat jazzy blues. Really unique and cool.
The songs actually continues after your version faded out. Enjoyed your reaction!
One of the best bands to ever do it.
Live versions of Telegraph Road, Romeo and Juliet, Private Investigations, and Love Over Gold should be some of your next considerations. Just to name a few...of many.
Edit: and like others have stated, you're definitely missing out on a killer solo that you can hear just getting started. Why anyone would cut that out and make a video is beyond me. So take the time to go and find the other version with the extended outro and just listen to it on your own.
Yeah, that really hurt when the video cut out on one of the best guitar solos in rock history, imo.
That's why whenever I make a comment recommending a song I search for the best video version I can find.
Amber, you're right about the soothing calm of his guitar in this song. I love it so much. He's hearing Dixieland jazz. That's the music he's hearing that draws him into the club.
You nailed the lyrics it's exactly what it was it's about a band that no one cares about and they just play for themselves everyone's in different to them and then something he witnessed and he wrote a song about it you have to check out the live version it is the most incredible live performance you'll ever see
The Guitarist is Mark Knopfler and has a very distinct sound partially because of the way he tunes, he's like Carlos Santana three bars and you know who's playing the guitar because of their unique sound.
This clip left out the best part of the song! The guitar piece at the end is awesome! I highly recommend listening to the full album version 🙂
This was the sound that introduced many of us to Knopfler and Dire Straits. The tone was unique and so captivating. This and everything they did was so much fun to see evolve.
Then the man, he steps right up to the microphone. He says it at last, just as the time bell rings. Goodnight, now its time to go home. Then he makes it fast, with one last thing. "We are the Sultans... We are the Sultans of Swing."
So freaking cool.
Mark Knopfler has his own picking style.. many videos of him showing the many styles he uses...... Loved them from day 1 I heard them in 1979 at a cinema, with a pre movie short of Romeo and Juliette
His voice is earthy and working class. The lyrics are relatable by anyone, and perfectly crafted. And then the playing -by all of them- is transcendent. The chords are chill, yet the notes are shining bright. It makes for absolute magic.
Yes.. 100%.
This vid was good but it cut off before the best best.
Definitely do Alchemy Live.
It'll blow your minds
Mark lets the guitar do the singing for him
Basically, Mark's "voice" is his guitar, the voice is just there to compliment it. Watch the Alchemy live version of this if you want to see a band having a blast on stage and a drummer on fire!
We demand you redo this reaction by doing the Alchemy Live version.
Mark Knopfler is the lead singer and Guitarist and he wrote this song about a band whom he saw playing in a London pub named the Sultans of Swing. Knopfler's guitar pickups are the stuff of legend!
This song is an absolute gem. Mark Knopfler with one of the best guitar solos ever recorded.
OH man, and the solo is cut off in this recording. Damn. You should watch the live version of this and Money for Nothing.
It's the perfect song to put on after a long day and just chill out relaxing
My late husband loved all music genres. At least once a day he said “never let the music pass you by”. He never explained but I think he meant music is like therapy, medicine, healing, joy, heartbreak, love. So many emotions we can’t express by word alone. Music is often my way to escape.
I agree. My daughter knows what to play at my funeral and what to play for me to wake me if I’m ever in a coma lol. Music is a long trip to the beach in the car, heals your heart during a breakup, and gets you through a lost job. I’m sorry for your loss.
@@joebwankenobi5194 thank you
The two of you are my Favorite US reactors! This time on a UK group! But I also like to watch reactions from the Brits on a US group! I am a 68 yr. old American, so you are reacting to what I grew up on!
My personal opinion, this era of music you are reacting to, shows the Artistry of the groups of that era! Those groups had, Musician's, and great lyrists! Today, can not compare!
Young people, one of the best guitarist in the world
Mark's a storyteller, his voice and his lyrics are both part of that vibe.
I, at 74, recently discovered the range of Dire Straits and this song hooked me. BUT you must ‘re listen/react’ to the “Alchemy” concert referred to and DON’T STOP until the band does!! Mark is a world class instrumentalist and he’s playing a Fender Stratocaster with his FINGERS.
@@BertSmithLondon I have to check out Telegraph Road….never heard it thru.
So sorry you missed out on some of the most amazing guitar playing ever at the end. It’s a crime to cut off such talent at the end of a great tune
The performance of this song at the Nelson Mandela celebration was fantastic. Eric Clapton even bowed down to Knopfler.
You really need to listen to this song from the live Alchemy version, it will totally blow you away. Not only are the guitar solos and playing on a whole new level but the drummer takes things to a very jazz syncopated area that is very impressive. The addition of the keyboards just sweetens it ever so slightly more. Please take the time to listen to it, you will have a greatly love and feeling for Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler all around.
Lead singer Mark Knopfler, is one of the great guitar players. 🎸 When these guys hit the charts back in the 80s, they were a big thing. Cos they were so different & not like anybody else. They still have a huge following to this day. 👏
first heard this banger of a song probably very early in my childhood. My father is a very much a blues (Almond Brothers) and classic rock (Led Zeppelin, Dire Straits, Steve Miller Band) fan, and we would listen to these all the time during long road trips or just to the store. I remember my when my grandma passed of lung cancer I heard this play and this has been one of my ways of remembering her since 2018. This was my grandma's favorite song from Dire Straits and it was the first on the radio on the way to her funeral. I broke out in tears when this came on our car ride. RIP Mimi, forever my mentor, and my guidance ♥. Love you forever and always Mimi, my bestest friend 💔
Edit:
sorry for getting emotional guys, just had to vent a little
Back in 2010 I cycled the length of the UK in 10 days. For most of it, this song was rolling around in my head, with its pacing and cadence it just kept me turning the pedals for nearly a thousand miles.
Also, the outro is really great.
Knopfler started out as a journalist, and his best songs have the ear of a reporter.
Mark Knopfler is the singer and guitarist and, yes, he is one of the all time great guitarists. You could dip into some of the other great British bands and look at The Kinks (Waterloo Sunset), The Jam (Going Underground) and The Small faces (Itchycoo Park). So much other good stuff too.
Love Waterloo Sunset... one of my favourite songs...
