You are absolutely correct about No Exit. The book is significantly better, with Hitchcockian levels of tension basically from beginning to end. And the end is so much better. I'd also recommend Hairpin Bridge, by the same author.
I loved Fall. It was so simple, yet it brought out a fear I didn’t even know I had lol. My palms and feet were sweating the entire time. And there was one twist that got me. For a relatively unheard of movie, I thought it was very good.
I'd recommend checking out The Ledge. It's a similar concept. A girl is on the run from bad guys and gets trapped on a ledge. Definitely freaked me out because I am very afraid of heights.

X and Pearl reigned supreme for me this year. Dashcam though was a pleasant surprise for me as well-gory, suspenseful, bonkers and funny. I don’t care what Annie Hardy believes politically or otherwise, she won a fan in me. She was hilarious. Watcher was also unexpectedly great. I saw it alone in the theater too and found it utterly absorbing.
Dashcam was hard to watch in that she’s a terrible protagonist but I found scary as hell in certain spots. That movie was worth it for me just for the scene where she fights with the lady in the car for quite a while & then it cuts to her being tied up in the seatbelt in the backseat with Annie having a shaky handed stress cigarette in the front seat 😂
My sweetie and I went to see Black Phone in theaters and we both left feeling like we were missing part of the story. We needed a little more back story on Hawkes character or something. It felt like we came in at the middle.
The lack of character development on “The Grabber” was 💯 intentional. The director has even mentioned it in interviews. I’m personally glad they didn’t get us any information on The Grabber. It wasn’t necessary to the film and makes him a scarier villain. Giving him a backstory would humanize a character that is a monster. And I don’t know how you felt like you walked into the middle of the film. The film has a very strong introduction that establishes Finn, his friends, and his family…with the introduction of the Grabber as he is slowly taking kids. My biggest issue with the film is most of the stuff in the basement. It just felt very repetitive and it felt like a waste of a really good premise. I wish they had done more with the supernatural and Black Phone element of the film. But, I still really enjoyed the film overall.
@@kristopherschermerhorn998I heard that there was a sequel coming out in 2025 but now looking at it… does it really need a sequel/prequel? It came to a conclusive end: child murder killed, the kid goes back to school instead of a therapist. Okay, cool. I don’t want a backstory in the grabber, we already know who he is, I don’t want to sympathise with him, he is evil, end of story. Stop sympathising with killers.
I think people shitting on Dashcam just because of the lead's political leanings are the obnoxious ones. Although I don't agree with her politics I found it refreshing to see a story from a character's perspective that are different to my own. What happened to "diversity" being the be all and end all? I guess that's only the case when the diversity perfectly aligns with everyone's political beliefs.
I don't get the whole craze about "barbarian ." The first half was ok, but the back half was dumb and predictable. Imo, "pearl" was tue best movie of the year. Mia goth delivered the best acting in horror that I've seen in years. I would go as far to say that "smile " was a better movie that barbarian, in so much it delivered something somewhat new
I once and awhile watch your stuff as it’s recommended to me and every time I think you need to be going way, way deeper in your discussions. A lot of these criticisms are just like “it was weird,” or, “yeah -- I don’t get it.” You have a quarter million subs and I’d think you’d want to actually offer people some interesting insights/observations. As it stands, this is just a person making a list of stuff they watched.
No Exit is one of my favorite books of all time! It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Sadly, the movie changed some things that took away from the story. I’d highly recommend checking out the book!
Speak No Evil was so surprising. I got so much second-hand embarrassment from the two families interacting, but in a good way, because it just shows how good the acting was.
It's a much better movie the second time around. If you know how it ends and what the point of it is, you'll notice all kinds of things you missed the first time around.
@@glyndwr15 I should give it a seconds watch! The funny thing is I myself am a people-pleaser so I would totally get myself into this mess too if I were a character on that movie, so it's even more scary.
Have you seen Bones and All? It definitely surprised me as someone who isn't a huge fan of Luca Guadagnino. It easily made my Top 5, maybe even Top 3 of 2022 releases.
I kept expecting Bones & All, and even thought that it was number 1 when it still hasn’t been mentioned 😅 But still, thank you for sharing all your thoughts and ratings.
I think that The Black Phone was honestly one of the weakest films this year. It was way too overhyped and felt like it was capitalizing off the hype of things like stephen king and stranger things. But some of the best movies this year were probably Pearl and Bodies honestly.
I didn't like Barbarian. The first half is great, but the secong half... no. The beginning of the second half destroys the ambience created in the first half, and it becomes like a bad chapter of The X-Files.
I disliked They/Them the longer I sat with it as well. Best: Barbarian. Worst: Speak No Evil. Ugh, I've never had a movie make me scream so much (in frustration) at my t.v.
Great list! I myself watched a lot this year so many in fact that I can only do a top 10 so here's my controversial top 10 best horror movies of 2022. Also I don't have any worst horror movies as I'm one person that's easily pleased by every horror movie I watch. 1. BlumHouse's Dashcam 2. Hellbender 3. Death Valley 4. Searchlight Pictures' The Menu 5. BlumHouse's Halloween Ends 6. BlumHouse's Next Of Kin 7. Pearl 8. Barbarian 9. Beast 10. Orphan:First Kill I know Death Valley and the seventh Paranormal Activity were released last year but I included them here based solely on their DVD release.
I'm guess I'm in the 1% of people that really did not like Barbarian at all. The first 40 minutes were creepy and cool. Everything after that I hate. Mostly boring and u likeable characters. The moster was just stupid. The plot twist was just confusing and dull
watcher was my absolute favorite movie of the year and is probably one of my all time favorites! it was so amazing. i agree it’s not the most original story but i think it is a 100% perfect take on a story/trope/tradition that has yet to be executed so beautifully by anyone else. was so excited to see it so high up on the list!!! glad someone else loved it :)
2022 is such a good year for movies in general honestly. Yeah there were the usual remakes and whatever but there was so many amazing creative movies, it’s made me have hope for the future when it comes to movies. (EEAAO) is my favorite movie of the year though hands down. I’ve seen it three or four times and have cried at least somewhat each time
Scream is my favourite movie,, I loved the first one, my favourite one of them all Scream will continue to be my favourite until I watch either The Black phone, Black Christmas (1974) and/or Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
my dad is a Huge fan of the Halloween franchise (i probably would be too but i've only seen Halloween kills and i was like 12) and he said he was fairly disappointed with Halloween ends. i heard a lot of other people were aswell
Loved this video!! Such a good way to do the recap going thru all your Letterboxd. Also very glad to see Bodies Bodies Bodies in the top 5 i feel like it’s not getting as much as it deserves this ranking season 💖
Where is Hellraiser(2022)? A lot of people are just passing it up. It's not amazing but it's still a solid horror movie. I'm hardly seeing it on people's list. But yet ranking NOPE and fresh really high.
Watcher really really got under my skin! It could have been another woman in the window movie, but the way it really makes the character (and the viewer) feel so isolated, and the really dark, disturbing way the victims are described really just had me chilled all over. Favorite horror film of the year is Barbarian, and it's also in my top 3 films of the year. It's a very difficult film to watch (content warning for sexualized and racialized violence) but Soft & Quiet is by far the most disturbing film I saw this year and if you can stomach it I think it's a very effective film with an important message. My least favorite horror films this year were Men and Bones and All. Men was stylistically very interesting (and it turned me on to Leslie Duncan which is a plus; thanks Men!) but the actual message of the film felt so basic and boring, but delivered in an absurdly convoluted and gross way. Bones and All just pissed me off so much. People are hailing it as a modern horror masterpiece and to me it's just high brow Twilight with cannibals. Also I take issue with the way it depicts queerness with cannibalism as a really miscalculated metaphor.
The only movie I watched was Barbarian and I don’t like it 😂😂 I wanted more story behind the tapes I got the idea of what was in them but I guess I wanted to see idk
COMPLETELY agree with the scream ranking. I don't really like the scream franchise because its more mainstream then other franchises and it usually has boring kills.
honestly my gripe about they/them was the fucking ending. everything leading up to it was good and suspenseful and they just fucking butchered it with the ending
I can understand trying to remake Firestarter because the original was not a good film but why would you even suggest a remake of Misery when the original is perfection???
My daughter is 16 now- she doesn’t like horror at all and I have tried to make her a horror lover. She is her own person- that is something I didn’t foresee happening when she was a baby 😆. Congratulations! Girls are the best!🎉🥳🎊 ❤️from Sweden
I wasn’t a fan of Pearl! Maybe I’ll have to rewatch it but X was definitely more my style but I liked X less the second time I watched it so maybe I’ll like Pearl more the second time!
Would love to see your review on Skinamarink. I'm actually all for "elevated horror" and am A24 fiend,-love all the pretentious stuff that most ppl can't stand. But that one...not sure how review it. I think it would have worked better as a short, but over an hour of dutch angles of ceilings, was even too much for me.
I never go to theaters but I saw Barbarian the day before it released at an event my local theater was having for one reason. I’ve always wished I was old enough to experience The Blair Witch Project like my parents did: an iconic film, in a theater, completely blind before anyone else. And it really felt (and maybe still feels) like that’s the sort of film we had on our hands and I couldn’t miss it.
I was about 16 when I saw Blair Witch, we saw it while we were on summer vacation in a small town cinema at midnight! Complete with wooden floors and rickety old leather chairs. We then walked back to our campsite and slept in a tent, all the parents kept trying to scare us the rest of the night by shaking our tents and making weird noises. I’ve never held my bladder for that long before, there was no way I was unzipping that tent! Haha! One of the best memories of my life!
I saw Blair Witch in theaters when I was 10 😂 my parents were convinced k was going to have nightmares but I absolutely loved it and it sparked my interest in horror ❤
Excluding the first 30 minutes I absolutely hated Barbarian. I am trying to figure out why everyone loves it so much. No judgement, we all like different things but I just couldnt take it seriously once the title screen came on.
This might be the most controversial Horror ranking ever made! I love it! Hahahaha I disagree for most of it but I also think it’s always interesting to see how other horror fans have such different expectations. I also remember you talking about how you just couldn’t stomach gore during your pregnancy and by knowing that it explains A LOT! Haha Def didn’t deserve the hate messages you got! Take care! X
I agree with your number one pick! Barbarian is easily my top choice. The worst for me was the Texas Chainsaw remake. Absolutely horrendous imo lol. I do wish that people talked about Fresh more. It is in my top three of the year for sure
My favorites of the years were Bodies Bodies Bodies, Nope, X, and Pearl. (My favorite movie this year was Everything Everywhere All at Once, though it isnt a horror film).
Dashcam somehow managed to get above Pearl, but i guess we all have that weird top pick taste anyways And the worst is def V/H/S 99. Thought i'd put Deadware here, but vhs was such a disappointment
My favorite out of the ones I've watched was Bodies bodies bodies, it was a great surprise and the worst one was Texas Chainsaw Massacre I was rooting for Leatherface the entire time. I also watched Audition and I loved the cinematography as well, Barbarian is on my watchlist I'll watch it soon
Rebecca hall has ALWAYS been a must watch!! There was a movie she was in called the awakening i think that she went to a boys school after WW1 and she was a paranormal debunking person and was there to calm the kids down but all kinds of weirdness starts going on! Also, any stop motion movie deserves at least 3.5 stars out of 5 immediately if only for how hard it is to make!!😁
I hate that movie more than any I've ever watched. Not even Cry_Wolf, which before Jeepers Creepers Reborn pissed me off the most out of ANY movies I'd seen, can make me as angry as Jeepers Creepers Reborn did.
My top 5 favorites from least to greatest are Orphan: First Kill (really enjoyed this in theaters), Barbarian, The Menu, Men (really got under my skin during some scenes and later found out fully about what the plot meant), and then my favorite of the year is Pearl. For my least favorites of the year from best to worst are Texas Chainsaw Massacre, My Best Friend’s Exorcism, Choose or Die, Halloween Ends, and then Dead Stream (the guy was just too annoying). Also, not sure if The Monsters count as horror but that one was actually overall my least favourite movie of the whole year. It was just really bland, boring, and it didn’t know who they wanted to appeal to in my opinion.
I think A24 is going to deliver next year. Pearl and barbarian we're so mind bending and unique, I'm excited to see what else they have planned.

My favorites were Studio 666 and Terrifier 2. My least favorite...I don't know I didn't like Dashcam too much. Good lists and cool video Sarah!👉😃👈
I'm 100% with you re: The Black Phone. I wanna chalk it up to Joe Hill fandom, but even that is a stretch, I think...
I don't get the whole craze about "barbarian ." The first half was ok, but the back half was dumb and predictable. Imo, "pearl" was tue best movie of the year. Mia goth delivered the best acting in horror that I've seen in years. I would go as far to say that "smile " was a better movie that barbarian, in so much it delivered something somewhat new
Glad I'm not the only one who thinks the way with Barbarian I didn't get what was so great or different about it
Men was freaky as hell. It was truly shocking at the end.
Ugh I hated it! 🤣
I convince some friends to go watch The Menu after watching your video on it. It was such a great movie.
Love your channel and all of your videos
I can't stay subscribed after 30 minutes of bad takes omfg lost all respect
How about Bones & All?
"I thought it was going to be like every other move I've seen, and it wasn't." Shouldn't that be a positive point for a movie, and not a negative one?
I kept expecting Bones & All, and even thought that it was number 1 when it still hasn’t been mentioned 😅
But still, thank you for sharing all your thoughts and ratings.
I think I remember her mentioning on Instagram that she wouldn’t be watching that one.
@@allllysiaaa did she say why?
i knew it was going to be pearl or barbarian for u but wow i’m surprised u picked pearl 2nd!!! barbarian is also my #1 :’)
1. BlumHouse's Dashcam
2. Hellbender
3. Death Valley
4. Searchlight Pictures' The Menu
5. BlumHouse's Halloween Ends
6. BlumHouse's Next Of Kin
7. Pearl
8. Barbarian
9. Beast
10. Orphan:First Kill
I know Death Valley and the seventh Paranormal Activity were released last year but I included them here based solely on their DVD release.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Hellbender! The makeup and VFX were so good
Very unique list. Hellbender was in my top 3 as well.
I'm guess I'm in the 1% of people that really did not like Barbarian at all. The first 40 minutes were creepy and cool. Everything after that I hate.
Mostly boring and u likeable characters. The moster was just stupid. The plot twist was just confusing and dull
I didn't like it much.
I completely agree
watcher was my absolute favorite movie of the year and is probably one of my all time favorites! it was so amazing. i agree it’s not the most original story but i think it is a 100% perfect take on a story/trope/tradition that has yet to be executed so beautifully by anyone else. was so excited to see it so high up on the list!!! glad someone else loved it :)
The new scream movie was a crap awful dumpster fire
2022 is such a good year for movies in general honestly. Yeah there were the usual remakes and whatever but there was so many amazing creative movies, it’s made me have hope for the future when it comes to movies. (EEAAO) is my favorite movie of the year though hands down. I’ve seen it three or four times and have cried at least somewhat each time
Scream is my favourite movie,, I loved the first one, my favourite one of them all
Scream will continue to be my favourite until I watch either The Black phone, Black Christmas (1974) and/or Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Nope isn't a horror movie and it wasn't made to be one...
What is it then?
my dad is a Huge fan of the Halloween franchise (i probably would be too but i've only seen Halloween kills and i was like 12) and he said he was fairly disappointed with Halloween ends. i heard a lot of other people were aswell
Loved this video!! Such a good way to do the recap going thru all your Letterboxd. Also very glad to see Bodies Bodies Bodies in the top 5 i feel like it’s not getting as much as it deserves this ranking season 💖
Mad God was the best horror movie of the year.
when it comes to horror, my top 2 would be: X and Scream
I think The Black Phone would have been such a great tv show. I enjoyed it, but it felt lacking and like there was a lot of information missing
I only saw 30 Horror films this year.

Finally some flowers for Watcher. Please go watch it everyone!
The only movie I watched was Barbarian and I don’t like it 😂😂 I wanted more story behind the tapes
I got the idea of what was in them but I guess I wanted to see idk
COMPLETELY agree with the scream ranking. I don't really like the scream franchise because its more mainstream then other franchises and it usually has boring kills.
honestly my gripe about they/them was the fucking ending. everything leading up to it was good and suspenseful and they just fucking butchered it with the ending
Congratulations on your beautiful baby girl 💕
I can understand trying to remake Firestarter because the original was not a good film but why would you even suggest a remake of Misery when the original is perfection???
My number 1 of the year was Fresh, it's quickly become one of my comfort movies that I just throw on while cleaning 😅
I was going to comment this even before you mentioned her, but you look so much like Mia Goth especially with the lighter brows!!
My daughter is 16 now- she doesn’t like horror at all and I have tried to make her a horror lover. She is her own person- that is something I didn’t foresee happening when she was a baby 😆.
Congratulations! Girls are the best!🎉🥳🎊 ❤️from Sweden
I can’t wait for ur review for Winnie the Pooh blood and honey (What has the movie industry even come to)
Love your end of year list! We have a lot of overlap. Bodies x3 was so much fun and I LOVED The Apology and Watcher. Cheers from the Northeast US!
I lovvedddd Skinamarink, had me on edge like nothing else. I’d love her input too!
Ranking Mad God so low because the story was hard to follow is kinda missing the point….oh well, carry on…
I never go to theaters but I saw Barbarian the day before it released at an event my local theater was having for one reason. I’ve always wished I was old enough to experience The Blair Witch Project like my parents did: an iconic film, in a theater, completely blind before anyone else. And it really felt (and maybe still feels) like that’s the sort of film we had on our hands and I couldn’t miss it.
that's how I saw the Blair Witch, best movie theater experience ever
I was about 16 when I saw Blair Witch, we saw it while we were on summer vacation in a small town cinema at midnight! Complete with wooden floors and rickety old leather chairs. We then walked back to our campsite and slept in a tent, all the parents kept trying to scare us the rest of the night by shaking our tents and making weird noises. I’ve never held my bladder for that long before, there was no way I was unzipping that tent! Haha!
One of the best memories of my life!

Love these replies so much
I saw Blair Witch in theaters when I was 10 😂 my parents were convinced k was going to have nightmares but I absolutely loved it and it sparked my interest in horror ❤
Take care! X
I’d like to hear more about the plot holes you mentioned in The Black Phone.
Girl I LOVE YOU for including "You wont be alone" and " The House " !!!!
Watching the house now 👀
@@polarpop666 SLAYYYYY IT IS SO GOODDD
I don’t get why black phone is so liked. It was paint by numbers, generic horror
I loved World's Fair and I can't wait for Skinamarink!
Skinamarink is so good. You're in for a treat...
Hear hear!
Dashcam somehow managed to get above Pearl, but i guess we all have that weird top pick taste anyways
And the worst is def V/H/S 99.
Definitely watch Barbarian! I loved it. I was genuinely unsettling and not at all what I was expecting going into it.
Surprised you didn’t include The Night House!
Last year!
Favorites: Pearl, X, Barbarian, Bodies Bodies Bodies, Bones and All
Least Favorites; Halloween Ends, Men, They/Them
Rebecca hall has ALWAYS been a must watch!! There was a movie she was in called the awakening i think that she went to a boys school after WW1 and she was a paranormal debunking person and was there to calm the kids down but all kinds of weirdness starts going on! Also, any stop motion movie deserves at least 3.5 stars out of 5 immediately if only for how hard it is to make!!😁
mad vertigo while watching fall!! best part of the movie!! lol
I’m so surprised jeepers creepers reborn isn’t on this list. Clearly the worst horror movie of the year.
I refuse to watch that movie.
No matter who directed it.
@@robk.6591I would say you shouldn’t watch it at all cause there is nothing good about that garbage
I hate that movie more than any I've ever watched. Not even Cry_Wolf, which before Jeepers Creepers Reborn pissed me off the most out of ANY movies I'd seen, can make me as angry as Jeepers Creepers Reborn did.
The Inivitation threw me off, as there is a film from 2015 that has the same title. It's also a much better film.
Bones and All is my favorite horror movie of the year.
I honestly love the no eyebrows look! 28:10 Looks so good and I’m glad that you’re embracing your natural beauty! ❤
nah, no eyebrows is ... well ... honestly ... ugly
