Thank you so much for speaking out against Spyglass, it's really cool to hear. What they did to Melissa Barrera is outrageous. My favorite horror movie of the year is a french one called Gueules Noires, I don't know if its going to get a US release but I highly recommend it! Incredible practical effects and really good premise. French genre cinema was very strong this year, Animal Kingdom, Vincent Doit Mourir and Vermines are really films to watch.
Thinking that Exoricst Believer is in anyway okay is beyond me.. That film was trash from start to end, it's dreadful. I think in reality, we will never get Horrors as good as The Omen, The original Exorcist and the 3rd on in the franchise. I basically think that this generation is dumber because everything is done for them. We know to much now so we have very limited imagination. People are running out of ideas so they have to revert back to other decades like Joker, Strange Things and Fear Street 94. I mean the last briliant monster flick I've seen was Jeepers Creepers and the 2nd one as very good too. I thought the Conjuring was basically bordering on a bore-fest. I'm going to keep watching to see what films you think are very well done.
Okay, to know that you think Scream 6 or whatever it's called is good tells me that none of your top 5 films are going to be my cup of tea. I think All the Scream films are absolute utter garbage along with The Blair Witch Project which I thought was a joke. I'm just going to have to accpet that it's going to be very hard for me to find a modern horror film that will impress me. Maybe I've seen it all already and they can't go any further with horror.

Agree with your opinion on M3gan. Before watching it, I remember seeing people say that the kid was a brat. I watched it and didn't understand why people said that, she watched both of her parents die in a car crash. Did you expect her to act like everything was all sunshine and rainbows?

godzilla minus one was the closest thing this year to a masterpiece!! i feel like it could be categorized in any genre, but the monster and horror scenes were incredibly done.
Yeah the FNAF movie had to walk a very fine line of catering to existing video game fans but still being accessible to people going into the movie blind. I think it did a pretty good job and I LOVE how much practical effects and costumes/suits were real versus CGI. I really hope we get some more movies out of the franchise because you can really feel the passion and love that was put into it. More importantly, I hope between FNAF and the Barbie movie that studios will realize that audiences actually like being able to see what is happening in movies and enjoy colors outside of dim to dark
Fr, I think that this movie was more for like, the fans, because going blind you wouldn't enjoy the little details like Balloon Boy, or it would seem stupid the animatronics possessed by children, but I think they did an incredible job with balancing it
I personally think the movie needed more violence, and I was a bit put off from the changes to the story, but the original timeline would be too confusing for beginners and basing the entire movie just purely off the first game would be a bit boring.
Thank you for bringing more respect to Skinamarink’s name!! I love that movie SO much, yet I completely understand why it’s so polarizing (it’s not a case of quality, it’s just about personal taste). I agree with everything you said about it and now I’m gonna check if you have a full review after I leave this comment lol. I went into the movie completely blind and ended up being the only person in the theater. I think you can imagine how that went.
If you watched Pet Cemetery and Evil dead you can definitely watch When Evil Lurks. It is not A Serbian film or Cannibal Holocaust. You are missing out on a really good movie
Top 5: 1. Skinamarink 2 When Evil Lurks 3. Cobweb 4. Thanksgiving 5. No One Will Save You Bottom 5: 1. Knock at the Cabin 2. Scream 6 3. Renfield 4. M3GAN 5. Insidious 5
I don't mind the comedy horror movies...Happy Death Day, Renfield, etc, but It's a Wonderful Knife was by far the worst of this genre I've seen. If not for Justin Long it would have been unwatchable.
Skinamarink made me feel like a little kid sneaking downstairs to watch horror movies in the middle of the night because I wasn't allowed for the first time in at least 20 years. It scared me so much and in the best, most unexpected and original way. It may not reach the technical quality of the others, but that feeling made it blow past the competition.
If you liked Skinamarink a RUclipsr called Flawed Peacock did an amazing breakdown of the film. He filled in so many gaps that for me his analysis is simply canon in my head. To me his reading is the correct reading and nothing will change my mind.
Did you see Beau is Afraid? What did you think? I saw it in the cinema when it came out and i haven't been able to make my mind up on whether i like it or not 😅
I would like to add Nefarious as one of my top picks. I love movies with a lot of dialog. Sean Patrick Flannery did a great job at that duel role, and he stayed in character the whole way through. The movie did a great job of keeping me entertained while literally taking place in just one setting.
I honestly really want to see skinamarink because if hiw its so obiviously inspired by the analog horror genere and from what i seen it really excuated it perfectly, id honestly love to see more horror films be inspired by analog horror cause its honestly one of my favorites
Can you please review Lake Mungo (2008)? It's very controversial and I'm curious how you'd rate it ! Some people say it's the scariest movie they ever saw, others say they don't even consider it as horror. Personally, I think it's one of my top horror movies of all time, right after Pulse 2001 (the Japanese one).
I totally agree with Lake Mungo. Fantastic movie!! It was a real gut punch for me and plays out in a completely original and multi layered way. I'd definitely place it in my top 3. The final act is strangely difficult to watch and definite nightmare fuel so I'd certainly place it in the horror category!
Yo. I have been watching your videos for a while. Im super glad you took time to talk about the issues with spyglass entertainment and thankskilling! Thank you for that!
I just started watching and I too really appreciate this! I watch a lot of horror commentary channels and I immediately stop watching if they cover a spyglass movie without talking about what’s happening or in a “promotional” way.
Surprised at your #1 given the styles and subgenres that came to the fore higher up your list but this is my first time watching your stuff, so I'm guessing you're a big fan of the franchise (not for me personally outside the first film). I've dropped my 10 below (starred the ones not on your list) but also wanted to list a few others not on your list that I'd highly recommend - good video and appreciate your rationale for every choice. My 10; 10) It Lives Inside* 09) Thanksgiving 08) The Last Voyage of the Demeter 07) Evil Dead: Rise 06) No One Will Save You 05) Dark Harvest* 04) Infinity Pool 03) Cobweb 02) Talk to Me 01) When Evil Lurks***** Additional Recommendations; - Little Bone Lodge (think it's called The Last Exit in the States) - The Royal Hotel - From Black - Malum - The Sacrifice Game
Skinamarink 1 and Talk to Me 2 for me this year, though not seen Saw X because I haven't seen any Saws after the first three. But if Saw X it's a bit unlike a Saw movie than I'll give it a shot. Nice one for being honest about your views on Spyglass and Eli Roth. I concur
1. Beau is Afraid 2. Infinity Pool 3. When Evil Lurks 4. Birth/Rebirth 5. Moon Garden 6. Skinamarink 7. Talk to Me 8. Malum 9. Run Rabbit Run 10. Saw X
In no particular order, several horror movies I thought were bad or even terrible: Five Nights at Freddy’s (the best of the worst) The Exorcist: Believer The Boogeyman Insidious: The Red Door Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey It’s a Wonderful Knife The Nun II
Given the reviews and sales, I don’t see them going back to Spiral. I watched them all back to back this Halloween and that one can get thrown out lol doesn’t fit and wasn’t very scary.
I appreciate you saying you will not be supporting the 7th movie w/o Melissa & called out the unfair treatment! They absolutely shouldnt have fired her for being against a genocide and I’m so glad Jenna Ortega followed in solidarity.
Knock at the Cabin was one of the worst for me this year. I wanted to like it so badly, but I was disappointed. I love the book and I feel like Shyamalan didn't do it justice.
M. Night Shyamalan movies are usually mid to terrible. I was genuinely shocked when she said she loves his movies and there's only one she didn't like. Six Sense (obviously amazing), signs was good with a TERRIBLE weakness given to the Aliens, why would they land on a mostly water world then? Slit was good however the 1st movie Glass was a good idea but only a ok movie for me. Everything else was just bad with dumb unsessery twists. He always wants to say something with his films it seems but honestly just isn't talented enough. It seems like he blew all his magic out the gate and nows he's just chasing that Dragon.
I watch a lot of horror movies, almost one per day, and I also write tales. I'd like to recommend a 2023's Argentinian Movie, 'When Evil Lurks', which I suspect you would give five stars, or almost. Would you like to mail?
My Top 12 Worst To Best Horror are: 12) Evil Dead Rises 11) Cabin At The Woods 10) There Something Wrong The Children 9) Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey 8) Totally Killer 7) Talk To Me 6) Skinamarink 5) Voyage Of The Damned 4) Reinfield 3) Saw X 2) V/H/S 85 1) Cobweb
I kinda agree 2023 was pretty weak on the horror side. Most of the ones I really liked were only horror-adjacent at best. BEAU IS AFRAID I simply adored, even though that movie was so polarising. One that I haven’t seen anyone talk about is “Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person”, which I saw at a festival, so maybe it’s not out yet? It’s a French-Canadian romantic vampire story and it’s soooo cosy.
I love analog horror so skinamarink is very scary, especially when i had an issue when I was a kid. I love found footage stuff like that because it seems more real than a movie that's just put together professionally. Knock at the cabin was disappointing since they changed the ending I found the book ending far more Superior and changes the way you think about things
i really enjoyed 'brightwood' as well! i stumbled upon it while in a clickhole session after watching 'the endless'. i agree with you abt its story editing; always fun to see elements exist perfectly with no extraneous story-noise to hide behind. what it had to say abt marriage had me laughing/nodding/screaming, as well. i bought-in immediately.
Yeah, this was a rough year for movies. Last year, when I made my best of list, I filled out a whole page in my notebook front and back. This year there were maybe... 12 on the list? And even then, a lot of them were movies that in previous years would have been in the runner up category.
This came up on my feed late, so I hadn't gotten to watch it until now, but it was on my front page.. and I just want you to know, I read the title and immediately thought, "Her number one spot is Saw X." I knew it had to be. It's just my favorite horror franchise of all time, and it's the reason I started following your channel. I'm so glad you loved it the way I loved it. Saw X was just so well done and we got so much of the story that was missing and there's still so much about John Kramer and the Saw universe that I want to learn. I am also nervous about the next movie. But I'm hopeful the writers will see what we loved about Saw X and will try to run with it.
I think what I loved most about Saw X is that it’s good as a stand alone film. You kind of hinted at it but you don’t have to see any of the previous films to enjoy this one.
I was surprised Cobweb was 4! I expected it to be your #1 but I’m not surprised saw X is there. I actually have no 4.5 or 5 star horror movies this year (😳) but I think No One Will Save You was my favorite!
Thank you so much! Just watched Cobweb and it was one of the best movies since Insidious/Conjuring. We had a blast I would give it a 9/10. Love your videos as always you're the best
Thanks for the lists. My favourite horror movie of the year was: Talk To Me - Australian supernatural horror. Australian like me ❤ I also really liked: Infinity Pool - Big fan of Mia Goth, and Brandon Cronenberg. Loved it originality bizarreness. Evil Dead Rise - Part of one of the most solid horror movie franchises.Stars a fellow Australian, and filmed entirely in New Zealand. Saw X - From the series created by my fellow Australian's.Great to see Tobin Bell & Shawnee Smith back. And; Thanksgiving - Fun horror slasher Return of Eli Roth. Great original fun kills.
I really loved Last Voyage of the Demeter - I saw it in the theater and I think that helped the vibe for real. Spoilers-I loved knowing they were doomed from the beginning , that looming horror being more the monster than the vampire for real.
I'm looking forward to checking out Totally Killer, Insidious, and Skinamarink. Some of my favorites were definitely Megan, Scream, 6, Thanksgiving, and Talk to Me as well.
Great list. I didn't agree with all of them but a great review nonetheless. I added a few of the to my tubi/Amazon list and if I like them I will buy them on dvd/blu-ray. I ordered Cobweb and am getting the Blu-ray tomorrow. Awesome channel!!
I havent watched all of these movies but the idea of fear sounds terrifying to me because my phobia is of dogs. Like big loud crazy dogs. So the idea of death by dog is just so scary. Also I LOVED fnaf but im into the lore, video games, and the cameo of one of my favorite youtubers. I really enjoyed totally killer and my boyfriend was super into it because he was born in the 80s so he liked the throw back.
Thanksgiving was my 2023 favorite. I thought it was super clever, plus…I’m old and I remember Patrick Dempsey when he was in Can’t Buy Me Love. Him going for a slasher flick was VERY satisfying 2 me…
Where is Beau is afraid? I swear I saw a thumbnail video of you reviewing the movie but I guess I misremembered BUT I'd love if you did a review on the movie, super curious how you feel about it :)
I am constantly amazed at how many people absolutely loved Talk To Me. I felt like I missed the mark on so many things and could have built such a franchise around it as far as the actual concept of the story. And I feel that way about. it Follows. the concepts are way more potent than the actual executions of the stories.
Really surprised to see Skinamarink above Outwaters. It's the second movie I've ever walked out of (first was the Assassin's Creed movie years ago). Glad to see Hell House on here!
I really liked Renfield I think bc I saw it as only a comedy with I guess like a sprinkle of horror. I also watched it in dubbed in Spanish with my family since its our first language & I think maybe that made it funnier / more enjoyable.
So psyched that Brightwood made the list! Personally, I think you should definitely still include your short story - which I’d be so jazzed to read, for realz!
Awesome list! Yeah Saw X was such a pleasant surprise this year. I had a similar experience seeing it on the big screen. I honestly loved Infinity Pool but get that it's very chaotic and bizarre so not for everyone. I loved how it linked its concept to its characters and we saw the downward spiral of James as he fell to his own temptations.
I really only have a top 3 (M3GAN, Skinamarink, and Jethica). They weren't perfect films, but all pretty original, diverging from the same old monster, supernatural and slasher films that they keep pumping out. I absolutely love your passion for the genre and your insight into upcoming films, but dang, I really thought Saw X was a letdown. I loved the direction and grim style of Cobweb, but I felt the ending was just cheesy. What if there was a real girl after all in the wall, living off scraps, etc.? That would have been scarier and more shocking to me. As for Talk To Me, I could actually buy the idea of idiots recklessly playing with a demonic hand for fun, but where's the mystery? You knew it was going to just get worse and worse for them. I have yet to watch Thanksgiving. Thanks again for your reviews.
I'm not a big fan of modern horrors but I do watch the occasional one so I am finding your channel very useful and interesting for recommendations. But I'm curious, do you ever watch older movies from the horror genre? If you ever decide to delve back into the classic era, you should check out Christopher Lee as Dracula, he is amazing (much better than Nic Cage or the CGI iteration of that Demeter film.!).
Definitely took notes on what to watch! I didn't see a lot of movies, so way behind. Really want to see the vampire movies even though they didn't score well. Have to see Cobwebs... Have never seen a Saw movie, not likely to start now. Thanks for the ranking and the comments!
This list is on point! Pretty much my few divergences from this are that I have Totally Killer and V/H/S/85 among the elite entries of the year, but Cobweb, Scream VI, Thanksgiving, Talk To Me, and especially Saw X were my favorites. Again, great list. It would appear you and I are 2023 horror spirit animals. LOL.

godzilla minus one was the closest thing this year to a masterpiece!! i feel like it could be categorized in any genre, but the monster and horror scenes were incredibly done.
Top 5:
1. Skinamarink
2 When Evil Lurks
3. Cobweb
4. Thanksgiving
5. No One Will Save You
Bottom 5:
1. Knock at the Cabin
2. Scream 6
3. Renfield
4. M3GAN
5. Insidious 5
Skinamarink was kinda boring
@@ForgottensnapdragonNot to me 😂
I don't mind the comedy horror movies...Happy Death Day, Renfield, etc, but It's a Wonderful Knife was by far the worst of this genre I've seen.
My 3 favorites were When Evil Lurks, Cobweb and Skinamarink
My 3 most hated were The Exorcist: Believer, Insidious 5 and M3GAN
I was waiting for this since the 2022`s recap So excited for 2024!
Did you see Beau is Afraid? What did you think? I saw it in the cinema when it came out and i haven't been able to make my mind up on whether i like it or not 😅
watch it again, it's not a one watch kind of movie really
I would like to add Nefarious as one of my top picks. I love movies with a lot of dialog. Sean Patrick Flannery did a great job at that duel role, and he stayed in character the whole way through. The movie did a great job of keeping me entertained while literally taking place in just one setting.
I honestly really want to see skinamarink because if hiw its so obiviously inspired by the analog horror genere and from what i seen it really excuated it perfectly, id honestly love to see more horror films be inspired by analog horror cause its honestly one of my favorites
I loved Skinamarink, but just know going into it that it's more of an atmospheric experience and not like a typical movie with a narrative.
Your channel should be called AnnoyedByHorror 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
i am pretty annoyed by horror too lately lol.
😊
I think covid is why every new movie feels like they go on vacation or some kind of getaway. Leaving the house is scary
Last Voyage scratched all the right parts of my brain, I really enjoyed it. Great list, as always!
Yeah I really liked it too. Was very surprised to see she ranked it so low
I also loved it, but I’m also a huge lover of the Dracula book so I really fangirled over this movie being made from that one chapter of the book! 🖤
late as hell to this comment but Same omg I loved it
I loved When Evil Lurks, Cobweb and Thanksgiving. Hated M3GAN, Insidious 5 and Scream 6.
Thank you for Scream!
I feel like I am in the minority here.
Infinity pool was hands down my favorite movie this year! I hated the Nun 2. Unpopular opinion I loved the Nun 😂
Can I ask why?
I thought it was ridiculous and boring
I loved it too!! I prefer Possessor but Brandon Cronenberg keeps nailing it for me.
Surprised some one else actually prefered the original nun lol. Something about the setting just hit better
omg I have the same opinion on the Nun. The second one felt cheesy and not nearly as effectively atmospheric.
Absolutely loved Infinity Pool as well, one of my tops this year, it really stuck with me.
I really liked Infinity Pool. I also liked Talk to Me and Thanksgiving. I enjoy your videos. Thanks!
sorta disagree with missing. i dont think it was the best movie of the year but the acting was still good and i personally was hooked by the story
Very much appreciate your stance on Eli Roth and Melissa Barrera 🍉 didnt think I could be any more of a fan of yours but here we are ❤️
When Evil lurks was the best of the year, no contest.
My 10;
10) It Lives Inside*
09) Thanksgiving
08) The Last Voyage of the Demeter
07) Evil Dead: Rise
06) No One Will Save You
05) Dark Harvest*
04) Infinity Pool
03) Cobweb
02) Talk to Me
01) When Evil Lurks*****
Additional Recommendations;
- Little Bone Lodge (think it's called The Last Exit in the States)
- The Royal Hotel
- From Black
- Malum
- The Sacrifice Game
Cool list. Just wanted to give you a heads up that Sarah has stated in a previous video that she won't watch When Evil Lurks :)
I concur
1. Beau is Afraid
2. Infinity Pool
3. When Evil Lurks
4. Birth/Rebirth
5. Moon Garden
6. Skinamarink
7. Talk to Me
8. Malum
9. Run Rabbit Run
10. Saw X
In no particular order, several horror movies I thought were bad or even terrible:
Five Nights at Freddy’s (the best of the worst)
The Exorcist: Believer
The Boogeyman
Insidious: The Red Door
Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey
It’s a Wonderful Knife
The Nun II
I loved loved loved Saw X and I hope they go in that direction vs. spiral, would love to get more of Amanda’s back story too
Given the reviews and sales, I don’t see them going back to Spiral. I watched them all back to back this Halloween and that one can get thrown out lol doesn’t fit and wasn’t very scary.
Yesss Sarah!!! Also happy 1 year to little fern 😍😍
As always she ate this video! 🔥
My thoughts on this video in her words.."it was fine" 😆 good stuff i subbed
I know this one is on your never-watch list, but man... When Evil Lurks takes the cake for me this year.
Why is this movie in a "never watch" list?
@@linuxdeveloperuy I think it's because it involves children + brutal violence
When Evil Lurks hands down was the Best.
FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S Movie Is One Of My Favorite Movie Of 2023 From Last Year And I Loved It
I love analog horror so skinamarink is very scary, especially when i had an issue when I was a kid.
Thank you so much for this video! Sending you all the love to you, your daughter, and your family!
When Evil Lurks was my fav for this year
Please give When Evil Lurks a chance, it was a MOMENT
Hearing Brightwood is similar to a story you wrote makes me want to watch it!
skinamarink was easily my #1 this year, no movie has ever terrified me more
A very unique film, have it in my top 3.
Skinamarink was my favorite as well. Brought me back to my childhood when I was severely scared of the dark
WHEN EVIL LURKS #1
I was surprised Cobweb was 4! I expected it to be your #1 but I’m not surprised saw X is there. I actually have no 4.5 or 5 star horror movies this year (😳) but I think No One Will Save You was my favorite!
Five Nights at Freddy’s is an eternal guilty pleasure for me.
I do not feel comfortable admitting I enjoyed that
Thank you so much!
Just watched Cobweb and it was one of the best movies since Insidious/Conjuring.
We had a blast I would give it a 9/10. Love your videos as always you're the best
Thanks for the lists.
My favourite horror movie of the year was: Talk To Me - Australian supernatural horror. Australian like me ❤
I also really liked: Infinity Pool - Big fan of Mia Goth, and Brandon Cronenberg.
And;
Thanksgiving - Fun horror slasher Return of Eli Roth. Great original fun kills.
I really love your Reviews channel. Nice to have a quick overview before watching the movie
I was wondering where your review for thanksgiving was!
Great video 🤙 seriously missing out on watching blu ray movies though
I agree just saying movies were too dark might help this problem.
Great list. I didn't agree with all of them but a great review nonetheless. I added a few of the to my tubi/Amazon list and if I like them I will buy them on dvd/blu-ray. I ordered Cobweb and am getting the Blu-ray tomorrow. Awesome channel!!
Yessssss Cobweb- surprised me! The scares were so good and not traditional jump scares.
Saw X is GOATED. I love the beginning, so cool how they made an origin story. One of the best revamps.
Peacing out after that Exorcist take lol.
Cobweb was soooo good!!!🖤 thanks for another great review list😊
Thanksgiving was my 2023 favorite. I thought it was super clever, plus…I’m old and I remember Patrick Dempsey when he was in Can’t Buy Me Love. Him going for a slasher flick was VERY satisfying 2 me…
Where is Beau is afraid? I swear I saw a thumbnail video of you reviewing the movie but I guess I misremembered BUT I'd love if you did a review on the movie, super curious how you feel about it :)
I agree that last year was an absolutely killer year for horror. This year was a bit lame for movies in general.
I actually gave more 5 stars this year than last year. But in overall horror it’s definitely worse than last year
I am constantly amazed at how many people absolutely loved Talk To Me. I felt like I missed the mark on so many things and could have built such a franchise around it as far as the actual concept of the story. And I feel that way about. it Follows. the concepts are way more potent than the actual executions of the stories.
For me Infinity Pool its a really good and special movie with nice but secret message
What message? 🤔
Mess about life in generaly and perspecitve of what we really want in our lifes ...ye @@ana_voland
The message is EAT THE RICH
lol@@j.p.gonzalez9218
Been waiting for this! 😍
The best horror movie of the year is missing on this list: when evil lurks.
Really surprised to see Skinamarink above Outwaters. It's the second movie I've ever walked out of (first was the Assassin's Creed movie years ago). Glad to see Hell House on here!
2022 was the first year I really got into seeing movies in theaters and I was so spoiled especially with the iconic horror movies we got
I really liked Renfield I think bc I saw it as only a comedy with I guess like a sprinkle of horror. I also watched it in dubbed in Spanish with my family since its our first language & I think maybe that made it funnier / more enjoyable.
just watching this now and can’t believe you didn’t mention it lives inside !! it’s so good !
you missed out "when evil lurks" and that movie was 6 stars at least :D
So psyched that Brightwood made the list! Personally, I think you should definitely still include your short story - which I’d be so jazzed to read, for realz!
Awesome list! Yeah Saw X was such a pleasant surprise this year. I had a similar experience seeing it on the big screen. I honestly loved Infinity Pool but get that it's very chaotic and bizarre so not for everyone. I loved how it linked its concept to its characters and we saw the downward spiral of James as he fell to his own temptations.
even though i hated i loved the absolute unhinged chaotic performance of Mia goth she is becoming quite the horror icon
I couldn’t be more excited for your short story collection!!!! 👻
Talk To Me is my favourite horror movie this year. it was more tragic than scary but it's a great tragedy story
Definitely took notes on what to watch! I didn't see a lot of movies, so way behind. Really want to see the vampire movies even though they didn't score well. Have to see Cobwebs... Have never seen a Saw movie, not likely to start now. Thanks for the ranking and the comments!
Damn Slotherhouse didn't even make it :/
This list is on point! LOL.
