Hi, I have been making heritage windows since 1984. I would recommend the true divided lite window. Separate pieces of glass held in place with wood glazing stops. The wood dividers are called millions. A window will only survive time when it's ability to shed water and snow loads immediately. Bottom sills should be at 26.5 degree slope to enable this. Use thick pieces for the sill 2".
Prime the window entirely with 2 coats of oil based primer, then topcoats. Hope all goes well. John

Being a retired carpenter with 50 years of experience making windows, I would recommend that you treat the windows with a lint seed oil based product. Also that all the components be primed with the oil before assembly. Here in the uk the word to describe the pieces in the centre of the window are called astricals.

An astragal is a piece of hardware that is used on a pair of doors to seal the gap between the doors when they are closed.
My boyfriend is a master woodworker who has spent his career making windows, moldings, columns, doors, staircases etc for historical homes the old way. Tung Oil can be applied to wood to make it waterproof. 3 coats, sand between each. Nontoxic, makes it like glass.
We used both on our farm...never a bit of trouble with rot. We had multi paned windows as well. That was fortunate because my brothers could be hard on windows hahaha.. just pull out one piece of glass and put in a new one...easy peasy lemon squeezy

Regarding your windows, you could start the finishing process with a good quality, penetrating oil finish. Sweden has a very long history of making wonderful finish products that are designed to last decades and not years. If you use an oil finish, it will leave the wood to age to a patina that will match the rest of the structures. If that does not seem to protect the windows well enough, you can always go to a quality paint that will match your color needs. I have an oil finish that was developed here in Oregon about 30 years ago. Steve, the chemist at Forrest Paints, became a friend of mine and he told me how he developed the oil. He had a handcrafted log home built by another log builder that I know. Steve said that he did his own research of trying to find an oil finish that was high quality, long lasting, cost effective and non-toxic. He could not find an oil that would meet all of his standards so he started looking at other oils and developed his own formula. I would not use anything else on my homes. His product out performs all others that I've tested over the years. There are a lot of things I've learned over the last 50 years of building log homes. You can always put me on you list of people to turn to if you have questions on log building. I have learned a lot over the years, but I also know there is a lot more to learn. I guess that sums up life in general. Keep up the good work!

Hears word nap. Thinks boob. He has his priorities right. Mine were breast feeding 21 and 32 years ago. When they reached the stage of wanting a lot more nutrition, they wouldn't sleep as long. I got a hand crank food grinder and started them on regular food, (one thing at a time), which helped tremendously, with how long they slept. My daughter never ate very much in one sitting, so she didn't sleep as long either, but my son would eat a lot and sleep through the whole night. Ivor is so blessed to have such wonderful parents. Thank you, for sharing your lives! So beautiful.
My friend lives on a boat and she is sure her son's first word will be 'bird' because he gets so excited when he sees them. He can spot them when they are really high up in the sky.

Traditional Windows
Greeting again from Hamburg in Germany! 30 years working as a facility manager, building expert with carpenter background. Also in charge of renovation of hundreds of homes- include. Window change.
First of all: The best wood for windows is mahogany-this is the hardest wood on earth.
Its so hard that insects cant get in or humidity because the wood fiber is extreme tight.
Beech and oak are the second best for windows these 3 are real hardwood.
Pine is not a hard wood. But it’s a good wood for windows.
If it has much rain and if the sun hits the frame often- you can choose between a natural glaze- an oil or a synthetic paint. You can choose also not to paint it from the inside then the wood can breathe.
Acryl is not the best of course the wood can breathe but you must paint it often again.
Historic in your country? Is not important if the home is not a “historic place after the law”
I would choose the natural look of the wood with a glaze.
Important: Don’t use spray foam for the frame. The space between frame of the windows and the logs must be filled with traditional stuff. Hemp is such a traditional window insolation thing. Well known for hundreds of years. It can breathe!
I love old fashion old school traditional buildings out of wood, with clay bricks cupper straw.
In Germany Austria Switzerland and many east European countries as well in many Scandinavian
Countries, the old way building (before the lobby pressure from the chemical isolation industry created energy saving laws and new order in the “R value” area)
Was total natural and with experience of hundreds of years, from one generation to the next.
Climax is and was the most important “thing” that wants to be implemented.
In cold areas the cabin had not only one window per outup but 2!
Many cultures loved lattice windows where 4 glasses or more found space in a frame. It looks cool but if one got destroyed got broken it was not so expensive to change the broken one. The glasses where kept through window putty. The first window frame was installed from the outside to protect the inside the frame from wind rain and snow. A roof overhang was a “must have”. Depending in how width of the walls (some had only 10 centimeter logs like dick proenecke I think- he also was a German rooted carpenter an my hero of Alaskan wild live he showed how fast a men was able to build a “lifelong cabin in the wilderness”)
But there are walls that are 20 centimeter or 40 centimeter even 50 centimeter monster logs (Siberian spruce) or Bavarian spruce. Here one of the best log home builders in the EU they also build log homes in Canada! Good pics and nice information’s go to artifex-blockbau.de
The second window was installed inside mostly to open into the inside. Casement for easy opening.
Why 2 windows? The space between the first window and the second inside was the best isolation because air is the best isolation! The heat in winter was warming t he inside window so that he glasses don’t get ice- the glasses where much to warm- and the air was the puffer zone where the air broke the power of the cold that pressures through the thin glasses of the outside glasses.
With 2 windows there was no ice on the glass! The wood stove did not needed so much wood!
The 3 isolation-power was a classic Shutters. Shutters are traditional protection from storm, rain, bears wolves sun. Many strong winds can destroy window glasses buy throwing branches into the glass. The shutters are the 3th- isolation help for a traditional cabin home build. 2 or 3 centimeter thick wood are perfect to break the power of the winter wind the frozen air!
Shutters look good if they are open and when they are clothe.
They are also a theft protection! You can build them so that no one could easily break in!
In aeras where heavy snow can be expected- there are snow loads that can weight thousands of kilos (KG) if the roove is build in a way that snow could not stand on it (here we love snow on the cabin it’s the best isolation but the home must be able to wear me be 3000 kilos or more! It depends on how dry the snowflakes are
Very often the snow falls from the roof and then it falls on the ground and day by day load by load you have fast 200 centimeter hart snow that can presses into the glasses and destroy the window!
Window shutters are snow-load-protection in snowy aeras!

Muntins divide glass panes (English for whatever the Swedish word was - I can't say anything in Swedish beyond "smorgasbord"). I love that happy relieved feeling when a project goes well and you can enjoy time sitting down and admiring your handiwork.
Ivar, a special child. He knows what's going on around him, makes deliberate eye contacts with mom and dad when he talks or plays. Those eyes are not empty - I noticed that since he was a lot younger. Best wishes to this blessed family.
Thank you for your discussion of soils. This is so important. Recovering the microbes in the soil, no till and lots of animal activity but still allowing the grasses to grow....
In watching you consider all the choices for your home, I am reminded of the struggles of the Kon-Tiki voyage. In the beginning, every seaman shook his head at the idea that logs held together by hemp ropes would end in anything but disaster. In the end, it was realized that long before modern technological advances were made, man was able to navigate the ocean currents on balsa wood rafts. They were not primitive. They were simple, but supremely fine-tuned and elegant solutions to problems. Was it perfectly comfortable and convenient? No. Perfectly efficient windows are comfortable and convenient, but there is a price to be paid - inside air quality. Yes, you can run around in your bare feet in the middle of winter, but your air circulation is poor. Heat is kept in, but fresh air is also kept out - especially important when you have a wood burning stove and candles. Perhaps this is set off by the moss lining between your logs -I remember seeing your video on this subject and thinking what a clever way it was to preserve your home's "breathing". You can fight nature by developing technologies that wrestle control from it and temporarily triumph, or you can use nature's own materials to protect yourself and live in harmony with it for as long as you need. If it's worked for thousands of years - why fix it? Full disclosure - I live in Chicago, which is not exactly an eco friendly environment. This is precisely why I think often of these things. I shun air conditioners and dish washers and cars, but I won't wash my clothes in Lake Michigan. I shun pesticides in all the foods I buy, but I am not fond of bedbugs. I hate the endless barrage of bandwidth tossed around so carelessly, but I am here writing to you on a computer. So many confusing and contradictory choices to make, but I often find one element missing from the equation - in considering all the facts surrounding a decision, where is the consideration for the future? How will my decision effect my child or her children? How will the decisions for my immediate comfort ultimately effect the well-being of those who come after me? Will my decisions stand the test of time, or will they be swept away by the next ultra-convenient and ultra-cheap innovation? Someone before you chose the windows that were the new innovation for the time, probably replacing windows that had been serviceable for many years. Whatever you choose, you are at least on the right path if you are thinking of the future. P.S. Please do not tell Mose of the Kon-Tiki. In his next video we will see him taking off across the ocean on a raft with a tin of sardines and a flask. This would be both thrilling and awful to watch.

Being OLD and Being a old house painter. I have seen how the way windows have been made and maintained over the last 50 years. The old way of each Pane being installed separately and then puttied in with window glazing has always out performed the modern way. Putting in one pane of glass and glueing the wood on prevents the weather especial;;y the rain from running off the windows. In the old days the windows were puttied which meant it could be a year for the putty to dry. So slow drying put dosen't work for the modern world. The best thing is to get windows with individual Panes with putty or the way they were done in the old days up there in Sweden. I found that putting boiled Linseed oil on the wood windows lasted a long time and could be recoated every year or so. The Old Oil paint can't be used any more. But you probably can get some kind of Oil for your windows up there. Good Luck up there.

Seal them in something clear, epoxy, varnish, or polyurethane. I just replaced 120 year old windows with 120 years of paint on them, the weather side and the sun side was very rough and unserviceable, the one side with no weather or sun was in decent condition.
Double panes. It is remarkable the amount of fuel I saved.

Yes, I mentioned that, too, before reading your comments. Makes a HUGE difference in energy efficiency. I now have single pane in an old home and had to place storm windows for better efficiency.

Little ones around age 1 often go through this restlessness at night. Give Ivar semolina for dinner, (200 ml. cold milk, mix in 2 or 3 teaspoon of semolina , add one teaspoon of sugar or honey, bring to boiling while stirring it continuously ) and everyone will sleep well at night. My husband and I replaced 38 oversized windows in our first house built in 1926. The windows leaked so much air it was impossible to keep the house warm. We hired the first 4 windows then purchased and installed the remaining windows ourselves. So happy you are ready now to get the windows you would like. Blessings to you and your family. ❤️🌱🏡

I bought a Cowichan sweater in 1992 - I've been wearing it ever since. I think someone else will wear it when I pass. It cost the moon and the stars, but I've never regretted going without other things so that I could have this sweater. Local only that it was made in Canada, and I live in Canada, but that is as close as it gets to "local" with many things.
Baby clothes: When I was a child there were few synthetic materials used in clothing. In the winter, to play in the snow, we wore pairs of father's worn work pants. They were held on with rope. We wore socks for mitts. We played for hours in those "snow suits", and when we came in they were rigid with ice. This worked out well because we heated with wood and the humidity was low in the house, so the drying "snow suits" humidified the air. We never owned anything that was waterproof, other than the unlined rubber boots that we wore, and those were rubber, a natural product, but rubber was imported and not produced in Canada.

I am VERY happy 4 you; Tova and Matthias and Ivar! Yes, your community loves you dearly. some beautiful filming Matthias. I love the class you are taking as it is ;THEE Way of the future. We canNOT continue the mess we are in. As you said Tova, it is important to buy/support local retailers. Ivar is soOOOoo strong, healthy, handsome and bright...I would say; How proud you must be of him...but it is evident on your healthy, young faces. You are rich by your love for each other, your family/friends and the natural and simple way you choose to live. It is normal for you Matthias, to be frustrated with your injuries, but know that many are going through the same frustrations or worse. The globe is too negative in it's output and so the good suffer setbacks. Continue to be grateful for the little things and try not to stress too much. The English technical term for the bar that divides panes of glass in a window is “muntin”. Some people think they are “mullions”, but muntins separate panes of glass, while mullions separate two or more windows or door frames that are placed side by side. They can run both horizontally or vertically.
True, but how many people know that? lol I suspect most would say glazing bar these days.

Something to try if you like: If you stop demand feeding and spread the feeds out 4 hourly approximately, he will feed longer and get a complete feed rather than "snacking" on you. My baby started doing the same thing and realised I was feeding too often. Even with solids included. It is exhausting waking up so often in the night, but this solved the problem virtually overnight. Good luck.

There is nothing wrong with supporting companies and products that you believe in. It is such a pleasure to watch you three.
General rule of thumb is if the windows are made of cedar, no paint is needed. Anything else, use a good oil based paint. Yes, oil based paint has all the nasty VOC's...but the trick is, you will paint about once every 30 years or more, so it has minimal effect. (I really like cedar by the way. Makes wonderful interior paneling.) Small pane windows are more expensive because of the extra glazing effort. If the glass brakes, it really isn't hard to pull the faux muttons off the glass and replace the glass. Also, one piece of glass has less thermal shorts (better insulation). (Wood is a very poor insulator.)

Here in the colder climate, Windows facing North are usually three panes sealed for higher insulation value. And others two panes. But Windows look better with working shutters.
A note about exterior windows. Multiple glass panes require glass stays which are a small triangle shaped metal pieces driven in (pressed in) on top of the glass to hold each glass pane in place, then glazing with spacklin over the metal stays on all edges which forms a water slope seal. This is an old style window. New windows today can have just one large pane with wood strips to form the look of individual panes in the window. Old style windows require boat load of maintenance such as reglazing with spacklin /caulking on each edge of the glass pane outside every several years or so if not covered with storm windows like we have in the states. This requires removing the old spacklin and applying new. As far north as you folks are I would think you would want double glass windows for help with heating or use exterior storm windows over the interior window. Pine wood for windows is good if care is taken of the exposed surfaces yearly like painting. Pine is a soft wood as well.
