What he says is partially true, but keep in mind all engines are built different, i wouldnt use 0w 40 on m3 or martin, m3 v8s have a weak low end torque, its needs to be reved and thrashed to get power like honda s2000, 10w 60 are needed for long hrs high thrash condition, people get issue on 10w 60 becauee they dont warm up the engine up to 100c. With 10w 60 you must get oil temp to 100c (why do you think oil gauge are for in a m3 lol) before reving above 3000 rpem period..
You get leggy performance from bmw v8s, something a bmw 6 would not have a problem with. Bmws should have a bmw straight 6, they have a perfect torque curve. V8s don't belong in bmws period. Also, I run 5w50 in my porsche, I was running 15w50 but it ran too thick even when warmed up so I went to 5w50. The engine is perfect now.
Oh and btw car companies tend to run ultrathin oil for fuel mileage numbers, not engine protection. This is not conjecture, the guy at a Porsche dealership told me this.
Its simple m3 is a high reving engine, 0w40 is not going to take the temperature, it needs.10w 60.because the engine is built to rev, if u drive m3 for 10 mins max thrash power actually increase under heavy load, 0w 40 will break down, loose.performance, 10w 60 runs the best and protect the engine the best.
Oil thins when it warms, his reasoning about thicker oils isn't quite right, oil flow and stickiness are two different things too. BMW oil was made by castrol, now it's made by shell I believe.
In high revving bmw m engines, you let the engine warmup properly before redlining it, you change the rod bearings at 90-120.000 miles and the engine is bulletproof. You can't compare an american v8 engine with bmw v10, or s65 v8, or s54 inline 6. The mean piston speeds in these high tech special bmw engines are very high, in contrast with the american ones, so the lubrication needs are different. That's why bmw engineers recommend 10w60. After all, they designed the product, they know it's lubrication needs.
My belief is that the reason they need the bearings is because the bearings are starved of oil at cold start. 80% of the where is on Startup. Obviously I've never done a test side-by-side on engines to know exactly the difference. I do know that after doing Amsoil oil and a oil filter it's amazing the difference the way it sounds at startup. The hundred percent synthetic leaves a film on the metal showing the next cold start it's already lubricated. As far as viscosity I have never done engine Dyno testing to know exactly where it would Stack Up.
That's only partially true because if the true reason they chew through bearings is the clearances are almost racecar thin compared to other cars and the thinner oil will cause more wear to the Pistons and timing chain. Run 10w60 let it warm up and monitor the oil with a oil sample r,od bearings are a maintenance item on these cars the engine is based off a Formula 1 engine!

The rule here is dont drive your race car in the winter unless you like your bearings in the oil pan. Racing oil is for high temperature protection. Winter oil is for cold weather protection. Dual purpose oil is like all season tires. Acceptable for summer and winter but not great.
I run rotella t6 synthetic 5w-40 . Yes diesel oil on all my builds i currently have a 900awhp civic and a 900whp bmw m4 its all up to your bearings clearances on what oil thickness to run. Been through alot of oils and this oil has performed the best.
A huge part of the equation, going back about 8-10 years, is when they moved the catalytic converters under the hood, directly connected to the exhaust manifolds. Most people have never stepped out of their car while driving 70+ MPH and looked at the cat converters. So FYI, they glow orange hot. That's a huge amount of heat slamming into the faces of the engine block, oil pan, tranny pan, and the usual engine seals. In addition, Turbochargers do the same thing at speed. The faster you drive, the brighter orange they get and that heat is also under the hood, not under the car. I've seen Turbo Diesels come off the Interstate with glowing Turbochargers and the main issue is hose composition, on inline six cylinder diesels. Old rubber hose was prone to leaks near the turbocharger so silicone was a good replacement. Similar reason why engine seals have mostly changed to silicone rubber compositions. You can only do so much with engine oil coolers and engine temperatures without building a million $$ race car. Best solution is to use a motor oil that can handle the heat and abuse. Little Suzuki Muliticab vehicles with a 3-cylinder turbocharged 660cc engine uses 20W50 in the Philippines and other hot climates where you will never see a day below 75F. A "0W oil is only for engine exposed to temperatures consistently below 0F. The 5W and 10W motor oils filled the bill for billions and billions of driven miles world wide for more than half a century so taking into account the CAFE requirement gun to the heads of car manufacturers, we'd all stilll be using the 5W and 10W motor oils year round. My 1988 Cadillac De Ville had two tranny coolers, an oil cooler, and a power steering fluid cooler. Go figure out what Cadillac knows and other manufacturers ignore.
Depends on the mix in the batch. Some mixes have different CST measurements at different temperatures depending on the formula in the additive packages.

Schould I change it for 5W50 cuz of winter or keep it and just warm the car at cold starts ?.
I have a 1994 BMW 530i with the rare 3 litre V8. I've been using Liqui Moly 10w60 oil despite it not being an M powered engine. I am also driving in Canada in the winter months with this oil at temperatures dipping down to -15 degrees Celsius.
@@reza_dc2 Unfortunately, the E34 has been scrapped. I hit a deer with her on a cold night in November a couple years ago. Unfortunately, the 10w60 didn't help save her from the damage from that deer.

Always use 10w 60 on m3 as it has low torque under low rpm, c63 use thinner oil because the torque comes sooner lesser reving is.needed, if u put 0w 40 in m3 v8, u are killing the engine especially if u do street dragging or racing period.
It's kind of confusing that most Mercedes Benz call for either 5W-30 or 0W-40. I just use 0W-40 100% synthetic oil since it flows fast at start up but also protects in high performance.

The highest mileage motor I know in real life was my father's Ford Vulcan V6 Freestar van. 450K, 3-4K oil changes with Rotella conventional 15w40 diesel oil. One thing was he always made sure to heat it up adequately (5 minutes idling at least to warm up) and park it in a garage in winter. It did eventually develop a rear main seal leak at about 425k, but he never had to go into the block or even the head at all, he only ever replaced a cam and crank sensor on that engine. So thick oil definitely seems to work extremely well if you're diligent like that. Euro cars in general though seem designed with different, usually looser, tolerances. Also surprisingly a lot of people in Europe tend to run 10w40 in a lot of stuff still, that would be 5W20 engines in USA (Ford Mondeos come to mind.) I had a 94 Volkswagen Jetta and now have a 94 Nissan Sentra. The Jetta came with 5w30 and the guy who owned it before me had oil pressure light issues after continuous long highway drives. I swapped it with 15w40 diesel, and I actually surprisingly gained maybe 1mpg gas mileage (maybe gained a little compression) and the engine still seemed "loose" and revved freely. I went to 5w40 diesel oil in winter, too, and I felt like performance was the same, no "looser" feeling. With my Sentra I put a cheapo dino 10w40 in, as I had it lying around to just have fresh oil, and it ran OK, but definitely ran significantly smoother with 5W30 I put in after, and both engines were the same age and mileage (246K on the Jetta, 262K on the Sentra.) I think it's just the tolerances and metallurgy are different. So anyway, I think you should run the thickest oil that still feels best, and this will vary from car to car, imo, based on the engine clearances and metallurgy and how worn the engine is, and your weather conditions. Before CAFE and the associated compromises, automakers used to put a table of viscoities you could use based on temperatures in the owner's manual or under the hood. For the newer BMW engines, I think the V10s you're referring to, one issue is their bearing tolerances are very very tight, basically too tight for a street driven car, and this leads to their engine failures.

Also you need the thick oil to keep the oil pressure under high oil Temps. Low quality oil thins out easier so when you run something that's like a synthetic blend or a mineral oil you need the super super thick oil
I have a y62 patrol with the vk56 V8. 400hp. Nissan and people here in Australia stick 5w30 and 0w20 in it as it's "recommended" by Nissan. What people don't understand, is that's primarily for fuel efficiency. Unless your in a snowy area in Australia, you don't need to run that thin crap. We generally have -5 to like 45 degrees C of heat range. People go thrash or tow 3.5t with these in 40+C temps with 5w30. Blows my mind. You can even hear them being noisy at operating temp. I run 10w50 in mine, so much better. Id hate to thing of the internals on the people's engines using 5w30 in 40+C temps
You bring up some great points here however I found over the years the biggest most important thing is the film strength of the lubricant which has nothing to do usually with the viscosity and I found this out on my personal Cadillac I used to run a 10w40 and then I also switched it to a 0w20 on the Cadillac and eventually got back the 10w30 after cleaning it up and I find that the 10w30 runs the best because it's not too thick to wear you lose power but yet you still have a tremendous film strength with 100% synthetic so it's very interesting how the viscosity please a smaller role than you think and keeping the metal Parts separated it's more the actual film strength itself and this will show how the actual film is different with Amsoil being 100% synthetic which most full synthetics can be called full synthetic when it's only 25% synthetic where Amsoil is 100% synthetic. ♥️ See Fluid Performance Tests - www.amsoil.com/performancetests.aspx?zo=5331179

So i have oil problems with my e39 bmw, is 528i 2.8 double vanos, i leave in hot weather country it never gets under 0 degrees celsious the winter but it gets over 40 degrees celsious the summer is the original bmw m oil 10w60 ok for me? The point is that most of people make a huge mistake by confusing the Engler viscosity with dynamic viscosity at different temperatures. We have the same notation of oils since 1920 probably, but totally other oils. Since most of oil are now synthetic, the ability of the oil to maintain the properties on a certain temperature range is realised by adding additives that inhibit the temperature instability, oxidation, carbon deposits and so on. Dynamic viscosity is a measure of internal resistance. Dynamic viscosity is the tangential force per unit area required to move one horizontal plane with respect to an other plane - at an unit velocity - when maintaining an unit distance apart in the fluid

My m6 low oil pressure come's on in 40-60 degree and below weather here in vegas so I cant drive it in cold winters out here( not unless I change oils and I haven't risked it).......
I run 5w50 in my Porsche that naturally is a hotter high revving engine. The first number is how quickly the oil flows, the second number is how the oil actually sticks together. Keep this in mind, engine viscosity and weight are two separate things.

Speaking of it I'm actually going to change my motor oil on my C5 Corvette to 0W-40 signature series on my next Oil Change. If you have an excellent cold flow properties at startup. Some people in South Africa are using 10w60 in turbo-charged Subaru's used as daily drivers. This is in Cape Town which does tend to be a bit cooler than further north like Joburg and Pretoria. Does that make sense to you? The Subaru manual suggests using 5w30!

Interesting show, Eben & interesting comments :) I'm not into racing my personal cars, but do regular oil analysis @ every oil/filter change, with a view to max engine life. Thus, I would agree with Steve Cedrone's comments, below. Also, oil manufacturers publish data sheets where the specify viscosity @ 104F (40C) & @ 212F (100C). etc. So, just to put a number on those sloshy sounds @ ~ 100F: I'd guess roughly ~ 80 cSt for the 0W40 oil & >100 cSt for the 10W60? The obviously thicker oil would have higher cSt @ 212F & higher? You could google the data sheets - just to see if I'm right or wrong? :)

there was a time when oils were marketed with a single weight #. you could by 10W oil, or 20W oil or 30W oil .... even up to 90W oil (which is still used in transmissions and differentials BTW). oil companies eventually came out with multiweight oils. they were designated by a ##W-## label. (i.e. 20w-40). this made it easier for the public in that if their car needed 20W oil, during a certain season of the year they could buy a 20W-40 weight oil, or if their car needed 30W oil at another time depending on circumstances (usually weather) they could use the same 20W-40 and if their car need 40W oil, again they could use the same 20W-40 weight oil. nothing has changed, the 0w-60 oil is just more convenient in that it can serve even more requirements than lets say a 10W-50 oil. it's really that simple. in general the wider the spread as long as it includes the single weight that is needed, the better. as oil technology progresses the numbers will become further and further apart. i suspect it won't be long before we see a -5W-70 oil.

I am able to cold start my built subaru EJ255 at 0F just fine with 10W60, builds oil pressure with a 12mm pump instantly at 0F the STi oil cooler and a block heater make starting the car possible at any temperature above -38F

In the winter if I live somewhere really really cold I would do like a 0-40 or something like that and then if you're going to be doing intermittent track days or even quarter-mile track days in the summer it would probably be good to go with the Dominator racing oil
The reason I say that is because about 80% of the wear on your engine is during the cold start and the only way to really lose oil pressure is if you overheat your oil witch in the winter if it's near freezing it'll be very difficult testing out a 0w 40 and get it over 250 degree motor oil temperature
Don’t do that. Use what BMW recommended which I believe is 10W-30 full synthetic. The 330i isn’t designed to be a race car thus shouldn’t be treated like one. No need to wheel extra money.
BMW oil 10w60 (Castrol) is nonsens! It's just fine for BMW-dealers (their wallet). It's for nothing... believe me! In past times it was very well (TWS). But in present time they changed the formula in a bad way! Better prefer MOBIL 1 5W50! This is still quality and your engine says thank you to you! I am driving Nissan Patrol LE 400, that's V8 5.6 L, I am in Qatar in summer the weather easily reaches 50c (122 f), the car manual says 5W30, I have access to all other oil grades what would you use for this car?
Just depends on the application if you're doing racing I would definitely use the dominator racing oil and you could go to a thicker viscosity I would not use the thick oil if you're not racing

I beg the differs. I think it's interesting how a 6.2 L GM engine in the Escalade can take a 0w 20. Then the bone stock C7 Corvette takes 5w 30 from 2014 to 2018. Now there's been a technical bulletin update on all sea sevens they now come with 0w 40 from the factory just like the Gen V Viper and the Hellcat. The SL65 AMG v12 biturbo comes with 0w 40 European motor oil from the factory. For some reason I have a feeling the ultimate motor oil for startability and high heat protection has now become the 0w 40. I would like to do some testing on engines under severe service and measure the metallic rating to find out which viscosity has the best protection. Under severe track conditions General Motors recommends 15w 50 for doing track purpose driving. Not to be driven or started below freezing with 15w 50 in it. It'll be fun to do a test one day😊

I need a suggestion, I am thinking to use 10w-60 in my honda civic 2008; it is consuming engine oil after 4500kms after the oil change (5w-50) I have also used 20w-50 but it was mineral so didnt help. Do you think I should switch to 10w-60? It also suits weather condition of my country.
I would do a Amsoil engine flush and a bottle of PI performance improver gas in lean out of it and a can of power foam that won't make a big improvement on your motor on oil burn power performance gas mileage longevity of the motor.

What he says is partially true, but keep in mind all engines are built different, i wouldnt use 0w 40 on m3 or martin, m3 v8s have a weak low end torque, its needs to be reved and thrashed to get power like honda s2000, 10w 60 are needed for long hrs high thrash condition, people get issue on 10w 60 becauee they dont warm up the engine up to 100c. With 10w 60 you must get oil temp to 100c (why do you think oil gauge are for in a m3 lol) before reving above 3000 rpem period..

You get leggy performance from bmw v8s, something a bmw 6 would not have a problem with. Bmws should have a bmw straight 6, they have a perfect torque curve. V8s don't belong in bmws period. Also, I run 5w50 in my porsche, I was running 15w50 but it ran too thick even when warmed up so I went to 5w50. The engine is perfect now.
Oh and btw car companies tend to run ultrathin oil for fuel mileage numbers, not engine protection. This is not conjecture, the guy at a Porsche dealership told me this.
Its simple m3 is a high reving engine, 0w40 is not going to take the temperature, it needs.10w 60.because the engine is built to rev, if u drive m3 for 10 mins max thrash power actually increase under heavy load, 0w 40 will break down, loose.performance, 10w 60 runs the best and protect the engine the best.

Oil thins when it warms, his reasoning about thicker oils isn't quite right, oil flow and stickiness are two different things too. BMW oil was made by castrol, now it's made by shell I believe.
In high revving bmw m engines, you let the engine warmup properly before redlining it, you change the rod bearings at 90-120.000 miles and the engine is bulletproof. You can't compare an american v8 engine with bmw v10, or s65 v8, or s54 inline 6. The mean piston speeds in these high tech special bmw engines are very high, in contrast with the american ones, so the lubrication needs are different. That's why bmw engineers recommend 10w60. After all, they designed the product, they know it's lubrication needs.
My belief is that the reason they need the bearings is because the bearings are starved of oil at cold start.

Obviously I've never done a test side-by-side on engines to know exactly the difference.
I do know that after doing Amsoil oil and a oil filter it's amazing the difference the way it sounds at startup.
The hundred percent synthetic leaves a film on the metal showing the next cold start it's already lubricated.
As far as viscosity I have never done engine Dyno testing to know exactly where it would Stack Up.
That's only partially true because if the true reason they chew through bearings is the clearances are almost racecar thin compared to other cars and the thinner oil will cause more wear to the Pistons and timing chain. Run 10w60 let it warm up and monitor the oil with a oil sample r,od bearings are a maintenance item on these cars the engine is based off a Formula 1 engine!

The rule here is dont drive your race car in the winter unless you like your bearings in the oil pan. Racing oil is for high temperature protection. Winter oil is for cold weather protection. Dual purpose oil is like all season tires. Acceptable for summer and winter but not great.

A huge part of the equation, going back about 8-10 years, is when they moved the catalytic converters under the hood, directly connected to the exhaust manifolds. Most people have never stepped out of their car while driving 70+ MPH and looked at the cat converters. So FYI, they glow orange hot. That's a huge amount of heat slamming into the faces of the engine block, oil pan, tranny pan, and the usual engine seals. In addition, Turbochargers do the same thing at speed. The faster you drive, the brighter orange they get and that heat is also under the hood, not under the car. I've seen Turbo Diesels come off the Interstate with glowing Turbochargers and the main issue is hose composition, on inline six cylinder diesels. Old rubber hose was prone to leaks near the turbocharger so silicone was a good replacement. Similar reason why engine seals have mostly changed to silicone rubber compositions. You can only do so much with engine oil coolers and engine temperatures without building a million $$ race car. Best solution is to use a motor oil that can handle the heat and abuse. Little Suzuki Muliticab vehicles with a 3-cylinder turbocharged 660cc engine uses 20W50 in the Philippines and other hot climates where you will never see a day below 75F. A "0W oil is only for engine exposed to temperatures consistently below 0F. The 5W and 10W motor oils filled the bill for billions and billions of driven miles world wide for more than half a century so taking into account the CAFE requirement gun to the heads of car manufacturers, we'd all stilll be using the 5W and 10W motor oils year round. My 1988 Cadillac De Ville had two tranny coolers, an oil cooler, and a power steering fluid cooler. Go figure out what Cadillac knows and other manufacturers ignore.

Depends on the mix in the batch. Some mixes have different CST measurements at different temperatures depending on the formula in the additive packages.

I have a 1994 BMW 530i with the rare 3 litre V8. I've been using Liqui Moly 10w60 oil despite it not being an M powered engine. I am also driving in Canada in the winter months with this oil at temperatures dipping down to -15 degrees Celsius.

Do you change your oil and lube yourself?
Always use 10w 60 on m3 as it has low torque under low rpm, c63 use thinner oil because the torque comes sooner lesser reving is.needed, if u put 0w 40 in m3 v8, u are killing the engine especially if u do street dragging or racing period.
I used Liqui Moly's 10w60 in my 10 yrs old 153cc Yamaha motorcycle this time.
It's kind of confusing that most Mercedes Benz call for either 5W-30 or 0W-40. I just use 0W-40 100% synthetic oil since it flows fast at start up but also protects in high performance.

The highest mileage motor I know in real life was my father's Ford Vulcan V6 Freestar van. 450K, 3-4K oil changes with Rotella conventional 15w40 diesel oil. One thing was he always made sure to heat it up adequately (5 minutes idling at least to warm up) and park it in a garage in winter. It did eventually develop a rear main seal leak at about 425k, but he never had to go into the block or even the head at all, he only ever replaced a cam and crank sensor on that engine. So thick oil definitely seems to work extremely well if you're diligent like that.
Euro cars in general though seem designed with different, usually looser, tolerances. Also surprisingly a lot of people in Europe tend to run 10w40 in a lot of stuff still, that would be 5W20 engines in USA (Ford Mondeos come to mind.) I had a 94 Volkswagen Jetta and now have a 94 Nissan Sentra. The Jetta came with 5w30 and the guy who owned it before me had oil pressure light issues after continuous long highway drives. I swapped it with 15w40 diesel, and I actually surprisingly gained maybe 1mpg gas mileage (maybe gained a little compression) and the engine still seemed "loose" and revved freely. I went to 5w40 diesel oil in winter, too, and I felt like performance was the same, no "looser" feeling. With my Sentra I put a cheapo dino 10w40 in, as I had it lying around to just have fresh oil, and it ran OK, but definitely ran significantly smoother with 5W30 I put in after, and both engines were the same age and mileage (246K on the Jetta, 262K on the Sentra.) I think it's just the tolerances and metallurgy are different. So anyway, I think you should run the thickest oil that still feels best, and this will vary from car to car, imo, based on the engine clearances and metallurgy and how worn the engine is, and your weather conditions. Before CAFE and the associated compromises, automakers used to put a table of viscoities you could use based on temperatures in the owner's manual or under the hood.
For the newer BMW engines, I think the V10s you're referring to, one issue is their bearing tolerances are very very tight, basically too tight for a street driven car, and this leads to their engine failures.

1996 Accord, F22B1 engine, I use 10w60 for track/race days and then go back to my normal 0w40, thiker oil means more protection when driving hard!

In the 90's, when I was running a big Nitrous shot at the track, I would run Agip 20W60. It felt like almost gear oil!

Also you need the thick oil to keep the oil pressure under high oil Temps.
Low quality oil thins out easier so when you run something that's like a synthetic blend or a mineral oil you need the super super thick oil

I have a y62 patrol with the vk56 V8. 400hp.
Nissan and people here in Australia stick 5w30 and 0w20 in it as it's "recommended" by Nissan.
What people don't understand, is that's primarily for fuel efficiency.
Unless your in a snowy area in Australia, you don't need to run that thin crap. We generally have -5 to like 45 degrees C of heat range.
People go thrash or tow 3.5t with these in 40+C temps with 5w30. Blows my mind. You can even hear them being noisy at operating temp.
I run 10w50 in mine, so much better. Id hate to thing of the internals on the people's engines using 5w30 in 40+C temps
You bring up some great points here however I found over the years the biggest most important thing is the film strength of the lubricant which has nothing to do usually with the viscosity and I found this out on my personal Cadillac I used to run a 10w40 and then I also switched it to a 0w20 on the Cadillac and eventually got back the 10w30 after cleaning it up and I find that the 10w30 runs the best because it's not too thick to wear you lose power but yet you still have a tremendous film strength with 100% synthetic so it's very interesting how the viscosity please a smaller role than you think and keeping the metal Parts separated it's more the actual film strength itself and this will show how the actual film is different with Amsoil being 100% synthetic which most full synthetics can be called full synthetic when it's only 25% synthetic where Amsoil is 100% synthetic.

The point is that most of people make a huge mistake by confusing the Engler viscosity with dynamic viscosity at different temperatures. We have the same notation of oils since 1920 probably, but totally other oils. Since most of oil are now synthetic, the ability of the oil to maintain the properties on a certain temperature range is realised by adding additives that inhibit the temperature instability, oxidation, carbon deposits and so on.
Dynamic viscosity is a measure of internal resistance. Dynamic viscosity is the tangential force per unit area required to move one horizontal plane with respect to an other plane - at an unit velocity - when maintaining an unit distance apart in the fluid

I run 5w50 in my Porsche that naturally is a hotter high revving engine. The first number is how quickly the oil flows, the second number is how the oil actually sticks together. Keep this in mind, engine viscosity and weight are two separate things.

I would definitely use a fuel cleaner and see if you can get it to run better you'll see the one fuel cleaner is called amsoil PI Performance Improver I would also find out what the proper viscosity is.
Small engines can take a variety of different viscosities You would definitely want to find out what the OEM viscosity is.

Some people in South Africa are using 10w60 in turbo-charged Subaru's used as daily drivers. This is in Cape Town which does tend to be a bit cooler than further north like Joburg and Pretoria. Does that make sense to you? The Subaru manual suggests using 5w30!

Oh man. Ive got a 216 bhp vauxall insignia petrol. Had 3 oil changes from a very good mechanic and he put 10w60. Today ive just find out that all the guys are using 5w30. So what im gonna do ....use 10w60

My Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 JTS runs 10w 60 too. More expensive tonoil this thing over my 5 and 3 series (m54 and m44).

I would double check the lookup guide most of the European cars take the 5W-40 European classic.

Interesting show, Eben & interesting comments :) I'm not into racing my personal cars, but do regular oil analysis @ every oil/filter change, with a view to max engine life. Thus, I would agree with Steve Cedrone's comments, below. Also, oil manufacturers publish data sheets where the specify viscosity @ 104F (40C) & @ 212F (100C). etc. So, just to put a number on those sloshy sounds @ ~ 100F: I'd guess roughly ~ 80 cSt for the 0W40 oil & >100 cSt for the 10W60? The obviously thicker oil would have higher cSt @ 212F & higher? You could google the data sheets - just to see if I'm right or wrong? :)

there was a time when oils were marketed with a single weight #. you could by 10W oil, or 20W oil or 30W oil .... even up to 90W oil (which is still used in transmissions and differentials BTW). oil companies eventually came out with multiweight oils. they were designated by a ##W-## label. (i.e. 20w-40). this made it easier for the public in that if their car needed 20W oil, during a certain season of the year they could buy a 20W-40 weight oil, or if their car needed 30W oil at another time depending on circumstances (usually weather) they could use the same 20W-40 and if their car need 40W oil, again they could use the same 20W-40 weight oil. nothing has changed, the 0w-60 oil is just more convenient in that it can serve even more requirements than lets say a 10W-50 oil. it's really that simple. in general the wider the spread as long as it includes the single weight that is needed, the better. as oil technology progresses the numbers will become further and further apart. i suspect it won't be long before we see a -5W-70 oil.

Jay if you want to really clean it up I would do a engine flush and also a bottle of the pi performance improver you'll see a huge difference and I would also try the racing oil if you're looking for a thicker oil the Dominator racing oil would make a huge difference as well if you're going to be doing high heat driving.

I am able to cold start my built subaru EJ255 at 0F just fine with 10W60, builds oil pressure with a 12mm pump instantly at 0F
the STi oil cooler and a block heater make starting the car possible at any temperature above -38F

In the winter if I live somewhere really really cold I would do like a 0-40 or something like that and then if you're going to be doing intermittent track days or even quarter-mile track days in the summer it would probably be good to go with the Dominator racing oil
The reason I say that is because about 80% of the wear on your engine is during the cold start and the only way to really lose oil pressure is if you overheat your oil witch in the winter if it's near freezing it'll be very difficult testing out a 0w 40 and get it over 250 degree motor oil temperature

Don’t do that. Use what BMW recommended which I believe is 10W-30 full synthetic. The 330i isn’t designed to be a race car thus shouldn’t be treated like one. No need to wheel extra money.

BMW oil 10w60 (Castrol) is nonsens! It's just fine for BMW-dealers (their wallet). It's for nothing... believe me! In past times it was very well (TWS). Just depends on the application if you're doing racing I would definitely use the dominator racing oil and you could go to a thicker viscosity I would not use the thick oil if you're not racing

I think it's interesting how a 6.2 L GM engine in the Escalade can take a 0w 20.
Then the bone stock C7 Corvette takes 5w 30 from 2014 to 2018. Now there's been a technical bulletin update on all sea sevens they now come with 0w 40 from the factory just like the Gen V Viper and the Hellcat.
The SL65 AMG v12 biturbo comes with 0w 40 European motor oil from the factory.
For some reason I have a feeling the ultimate motor oil for startability and high heat protection has now become the 0w 40.
I would like to do some testing on engines under severe service and measure the metallic rating to find out which viscosity has the best protection.
Under severe track conditions General Motors recommends 15w 50 for doing track purpose driving.
Not to be driven or started below freezing with 15w 50 in it.
It'll be fun to do a test one day😊

I need a suggestion, I am thinking to use 10w-60 in my honda civic 2008; it is consuming engine oil after 4500kms after the oil change (5w-50)
I have also used 20w-50 but it was mineral so didnt help.
Do you think I should switch to 10w-60? It also suits weather condition of my country.
I would do a Amsoil engine flush and a bottle of PI performance improver gas in lean out of it and a can of power foam that won't make a big improvement on your motor on oil burn power performance gas mileage longevity of the motor.
