I've switched to Agile for incoming only and stayed with Flux for exports. This is working quite well as there has been several price drops into either low or negative pennies/kWh which I use to heat the water. I still get the higher export rate as well. I turned the Eddi off during the summer to prevent water heating. I should have done what you did with the threshold, thanks for the tip.
No problem. We no longer have a gas supply so use the eddi for all our hot water at the moment. Next year we'll upgrade to a heat pump hot water cylinder which will dramatically reduce how much energy we need too.
I’m still on Flux. Although the days are getting shorter and the recent run of cloudy days hasn’t helped, but I’m still getting enough solar to mostly fill my batteries every day, sometimes with a bit of flux overnight cheap rate charging or holding the battery level so the 2-5am demand comes from grid rather than draining the battery. And still managing a bit of peak rate discharging as well so every day I’m making more on export than I have to pay on import. Will have to change at some point, probably when I start using the ASHP to heat the house. November 22nd last year
I have done a similar thing with my Eddi, first was due to the Tesla Energy Plan and now the fact Octopus pay me 15p/kWh for my exports, it si cheaper to heat my water during the cheap overnight rate of 7.5p/kWh. I am maintaining this.
More stuff like this please! For someone like myself who is hoping to get a solar battery, I'm trying to learn as much as possible about the possible system configurations. One roadblock I am currently facing is the solar installer is reluctant to quote me for more than a 3.6kw inverter which I don't think will cover my eventual needs (heat pump and EV charger) because I don't think he wants to apply for DNO ex[prt permission. If your maximum generation is 5kw, did you have to get this paperwork approved and how did you find it?
My installer was perfectly happy to do the DNO application for G99. They handled all that. If you want more than 3.6 kW definitely push your installer for it.
I wish I had pushed for a larger Inverter when we signed up for ours because our 3.6kW GE inverter & 9.5kW battery system definitely has its limitations & we still have gas CH & HW. I'm now considering a GE All In One system to add to or, replace, my existing 3.6kW inverter / 9.5kW battery. Problem is the AIO system is not yet backwards compatible with GE's other batteries. I'm told this is in development.
I tried setting my Eddi to do something similar, but instead of just diverting the excess solar, it just seamed to click in the immersion at a full power about 3kw, any idea what I need o change to make it just take the excess. Maybe I need to message My Energi?
Really like your videos as they are so well explained and deal with the everyday stuff that we all want to know about. During the summer settings did you find that the Eddi was charging from your batteries during the off peak period or from the grid. I have Givenergy and Eddi and it seems to come from battery first……..maybe there’s a setting I need to set up on Eddi or Givenergy? Any ideas please?
Yes, good question, it depends on the type of inverter you have. With the gen 2 hybrids you can set up a pause discharge schedule, as per this video at about 15:42 ruclips.net/video/S0Au0LFwkp8/видео.htmlsi=wKQVWWqohmoV9Nl8&t=942 That way the battery pauses operation and won't discharge into your eddi and all the power will come from the grid (which is what I wanted in this case). Alternatively, if you don't have that pause discharge functionality yet, set the battery so that it charges at the same time as the eddi is heating the water, so that it won't discharge. Set the charge level to something similar to where the battery typically is at that time of night if you don't want the battery to charge much, and then it should just hold at that level while the eddi continues to do the heating. I hope that makes sense.
I am also planning to change from Flux soon. I am curious why you did not switch to the Intelligent rate because it has a cheaper off peak rate than Go, and any export is paid at 15p which is only slightly less than Flux standard export rate
Not having an EV I don't have the option of one of those tariffs. Which is a shame in a way but also saves me from scrambling my brain trying to figure out which of 3 options would be most economical! I also don't have a heat pump or any form of electric hot water heating. I do have an air fryer now though.... But I digress. A year ago I started on Economy 7 and moved to Flux in April for the export rates. I presumed there would come a point where I'd switch back but it doesn't look like it. The comparison seems to be (bit crude but accurate enough) with Flux figures first - Night import = 17p vs 15p Day Import = 28p vs 35p Export = 17p vs 15p So I lose a little on night import but save a lot more on day import. And get a little more for export. Not factoring in the Flux Peak period because I won't export anything during that time in winter and I charge the battery from 15:00 to 16:00 to avoid using any import in that time.
@@TimAndKatsGreenWalk What's really needed is for someone to build an app that automatically picks up all tariff movements. You can then state which devices you have, how much you generate/export, when you use household appliances, etc.. It'll tell you which tariff to be on and the most efficient way of configuring everything. It would need someone with a lot of time on their hands who is good with numbers..... fancy the job Tim? It pays the very competitive rate of £0 per hour.
It doesn't, it's the immersion heater that controls that part. The immersion heater in the tank will automatically switch itself off when its set point temperature is reached (immersion heaters have a dial on them that controls this) and when that happens the eddi can't provide any more power so stops diverting.
@@TimAndKatsGreenWalk was kinda thinking that but on the eddi it says heat sink temp 33 when the tank is at 18c with a probe for gas boiler No probe for eddi going in and then it says max temp reached Dodgy immersion, but it’s brand new
@@jeff1172 the heat sink temperature will be the temperature of the eddi itself, I suspect, nothing to do with the water in the tank. Max temp reached just means the eddi can't provide any more power to the immersion because it's either disconnected or turned itself off.
Hi Tim, can I ask why you have chosen Go over Intelligent Octopus given you have an EV? IE is cheaper and you aren't obliged to have a car charger. (Like you, I am waiting for the GE charger)
Our EV isn't compatible yet and we're yet to get the GivEnergy charger, which might also not be compatible with Intelligent. Only certain EVs and chargers work with Intelligent, simple as that.
@@TimAndKatsGreenWalk Ditto. I recently switched to GO (from the Octopus Variable rate) because our car / charger combo were not compatible with Intelligent. Quite why one of the most popular EV's (Kona) & Chargers (Zappi) are not compatible with Intelligent is beyond me. Since GO is only for electric our Gas is still on the Variable rate.

Ah, it seems this charge is only for leaving a fixed tariff early. Flux and Go are both flexible smart tariffs so no exit fee and you can change every 30 days if you want.

Yup, it's a balance. Given I'm using electric to heat the hot water and charge the EV it works out better to switch to Go about now, I reckon.

The g98/99 are both standard forms and shouldn’t pose any issue for your installer.

Mine just diverts the excess. Not sure why yours would be doing that.

It doesn't, it's the immersion heater that controls that part.
