    Doesn’t flux peak export pay more than “normal” import? It’s not by much, but “saving” battery for the evening isn’t really netting you anything (financially), other considerations may be more important.

    Thanks Tim, August here just about where it should be So 5.1 kwp south facing central Scotland was 552kW so only 22kW less than cloudy July. My intelligent Go returned just over £6 free , so a good 7kW to the car and the rest to the growatt battery ( already full most days) and house load. After the disappointment of July and lack of solar I took full advantage of the free sessions as you never know what cloudy Scotland can spring on you.

      Octopus Go works out better for us than Cosy, as it happens, as we have a nice big battery so don't need to charge it more than once. We used very little peak power last Winter so the better off-peak rate for Go wins out over Cosy for us. Cosy also requires a heat pump MCS certificate, which you don't get with A2A installs, so we wouldn't be able to get it even if we wanted to, which is a shame.

    • @TimAndKatsGreenWalk
      @TimAndKatsGreenWalk 6 часов назад

      The EV charger tells me how much I've used for charging, the Mixergy iHP has its own energy monitoring, while the rest all have smart plugs which give me the consumption that I can add to my spreadsheets. The GivEnergy app then tells me the total, so I can subtract the rest to give me the "remainder" value, which covers typical house loads.

    Couple of extra moving parts, you assume you will stay in your house for 25 years…. If you move what value does the solar install add to the price you will get when you sell……. second is the tax on the investment, unless you have it in an ISA Miss Reeves will be taking between 23 & 40% off your income. I decided not to get solar installed for now, I’m planning on moving and I don’t think the cost of a solar system will be recouped when selling the house, but interested to see what others think.

    Decent August generation for us as well, but starting to drop compared to the previous months. We have the Octopus Power Up events as well as the free electricity sessions. For some of these in August I didn’t even bother signing up as my forecast generation was more than my inverter could charge the battery, so I’d have been exporting anyway and no point in discharging to only charge back up from solar again. But as we get into less sunny but windy days of autumn the sessions will be worthwhile again.

    I had the same reservations about the effort/reward as I'm on intelligent Go - and I can tell you making the Tesla battery export is not an easy task! I just think that consuming it then is better for the environment overall.

    • @TimAndKatsGreenWalk
      @TimAndKatsGreenWalk 11 часов назад

      If it's easy to do then there's no issue, but if it turns into a hassle to consume an extra few kWh then it starts to feel like work. For us it's pretty easy to just put the EV on charge, and that's the biggest consumer so we may as well do that. Anything more than that is not really worth the trouble.

    • @peterjones6322
      @peterjones6322 10 часов назад

      I think in fact it may be more environmentally friendly to export the maximum and then use a low cost night rate to recharge a battery or EV. By exporting during day time you are helping to support the high grid demand. Using the night rate helps to consume the excess unwanted generation and potentially reduce curtailment penalties. Effectively this is helping to balance the grid and reduce firing up gas stations.

    • @TimAndKatsGreenWalk
      @TimAndKatsGreenWalk 10 часов назад

      @@peterjones6322 the idea of these free energy sessions is that the supply is very high (due to lots of solar or wind on the system), so giving the electricity away for free helps prevent curtailment during that period. The demand during those times wasn't sufficient to use it all, so that's why Octopus were attempting to help address that. Exporting during these free energy periods actually makes the imbalance worse, not better.

    • @peterjones6322
      @peterjones6322 10 часов назад

      @@TimAndKatsGreenWalk Agreed, we don't export during the Free sessions, we consume, its just all other daytimes that we export. We are in a post code that receives the Octopus Powerup sessions (next one is tomorrow) which are scheduled during high wind periods. There seem to be three things to consider. If you really like the Fiat that you have at the moment, then buy it out at the end of the finance deal. Removes the worry of what might have happened to any other car that you buy that is not new. It sounds as though the choice of ‘small’ is not about practical stuff like fitting in the garage but about Kat’s confidence with another type of car. From my second career as an ADI, she is not alone. Have you considered getting a few hours with an ADI in an automatic (as EV) of any size that is slightly larger and see if when all the seat and controls are adjusted that she may or may not feel confident in a wider range of cars. You might want to include the Kia Soul EV 2020 onwards at 4.195m long (and within your 4.2m absolute limit): that’s only 90mm more than the Honda Jazz that you mention was a previous car for Kat. I have had one since March 2021. Good quality. Has lots of buttons so no Tesla screen control dangers. 7-year warranty. And range from the 64kWh battery to be a main car as well. Space for two adults in the rear to be seated comfortably for longer trips if ever needed. And, taking your home ‘green walk’ approach, the First Edition comes with a heat pump which assists cold weather cabin heating efficiency.

      We have considered buying the Fiat at the end of the lease and that's still an option we'll look into, but I'm doubtful we'd get a good price for it. Killing the lease early and buying a different second hand car would likely be the most cost effective option. The Soul is a good suggestion, I'll add it to the list.

    This is one reason why I'm looking to install twin batteries, along with a solar/wind hybrid generation system on a new build, single occupancy bungalow. It's all well & good having 10kwh sitting there but if you can't access it at the rate needed, it's not as useful as one would expect.

    • @TimAndKatsGreenWalk
      @TimAndKatsGreenWalk 2 дня назад

      You'd also need two inverters. But bear in mind that the amount of time you'll be pulling more than one battery/inverter is capable of providing is going to be very rare, so consider that the extra cost of the equipment might not be worth it in the long run given you'll be spending a couple of pence per day on peak rate power. Domestic wind power is also rarely worth it, unless you are on a hill with no trees or buildings nearby and have a very tall pole to mount your turbine on.

    Passive radiators cannot be used for cooling. If you ran them cold, water vapour would condense on their surface and run off on the floor. This would also occur on the pipes feeding them unless protected with sealed insulation. Or have mis-understood the comparison example?

    I have a Smart For Two EQ and the range in Summer on A roads i.e. below 60mph is 100 miles and 70 miles in dead of Winter and you can pick up a 2 year old one with less than 10,000miles for under £10k. Not sure how anyone who is saying that they are "Green" can go any bigger than the 17kWh battery in that Smart due to the damage to the environment done in producing the batteries. I have 4kw of solar panels panels and a 10kWh battery and a 3kW inverter that I can run the house from and charge the car from for more than half the year. EVs break even on carbon footprint in less than 15k miles compared to the equivalent ICE cars, so whatever you go for it's the greener option. When we say "small EV" we mean supermini (e.g. ID.2, Corsa, Zoe) or city car (Fiat 500e, e-Up!) size, not small family hatchback size (e.g. ID.3, Kona, MG4). There seems to be a wide range of what different people consider "small", so I thought I'd better clarify what we mean for the purposes of this video. We set a hard limit of 4.2m long and not a millimetre longer (and preferably less than 4m long). I know that it is longer than you would like but you may find the BYD Dolphin of interest. It is narrow at 1770mm, it has 360 degree cameras and lots of safety features. In the RUclips review by AutoEV, he said that it was easy to drive. It has very good speech recognition so you can tell it set the temperatures so you don't need buttons even though it has them. In addition to the top two trims with the 150kW motors, two lower powered trims are now or are about to be on sale. You can buy some used cars around £23,000 and more will be coming onto the market.
