    Congratulations on your 100th video, i found you after Higel suggest that i get Air To Air and so far I'm really pleased, i must find your one on leaving the heat pump on over night , ive only had this Air to Air since June so im still playing with the settings and it's been a funny year with the weather . Funny i went to the dentist yesterday and they have Air to Air fitted since my last visit in April. Really enjoyed this video, though I am also a big fan of spreadsheets. Your detailed and in-depth investigation into various areas of green tech has been invaluable and instrumental some of our choices, so thank you!
    One topic I would be more interested in knowing more about is control systems. Our setup has been built gradually over the last few years and involves kit from GivEnergy and MyEnergi, plus a non-smart heat pump. It’s kind of a nightmare constantly having to switch things on and off to stop them going rogue and stealing each other’s power, especially now that we have things like Saving Sessions and Free Electricity from Octopus. I think there’s a real need for something that brings all of these together but is designed for people who can’t handle complicated Home Assistant.

    • @TimAndKatsGreenWalk
      @TimAndKatsGreenWalk  Месяц назад

      That's a good question and not something I have a good answer to. I know you can get third party service that can optimise GivEnergy batteries, for example, but I don't know of any that control multiple things together. For us, I tend to set up schedules using the various apps and then more or less leave them to it. Like having the water heating at the same time as the battery is charging overnight so that the battery isn't drained by heating the water (same with charging the car). But that's only possible right now because daytime export rates are higher than overnight import rates, so it's better to do as much as possible overnight. If tariffs change that strategy won't necessarily work!

    • @pocoheywood4007
      @pocoheywood4007 Месяц назад

      You’re right, scheduling does solve a lot of problems but we’ve found that it only gets you so far! For example, GivEnergy have a ridiculous setting whereby you can either activate Eco mode to support house load, OR have a scheduled export. Not both. So you have to set Eco all day then have a reminder to manually turn on forced export when you get to the evening and want to earn money from whatever you’ve got left in the battery. And I would love to have the Eddi scheduled overnight to help with hot water on cold mornings, but if you switch it on then there’s no way of telling it to ignore spare solar generation in the meantime (which is more profitable to export). It all makes my poor little brain hurt!

      Awesome, thank you so much for taking the time to make those suggestions! The Eddi setting should solve that problem, but sadly the latest firmware update for my GivEnergy 3rd Gen AC coupled inverter still has the text “Eco: This setting will use your battery or solar to power your home’s electric demand, enabling this setting will disable timed export”. Ignoring the fact that it’s crying out for a semicolon to replace the abused comma, I guess that’s just something we’ll have to live with. I appreciate the suggestion though!

Oh and I watched you video of gas removal and your lack of smell at the time when you first released it !My fav vids were the several on the Haori Air2Air and the Mixergy iHP tank. Congratulations on your 100th Tim & Kat. Please don’t put your spreadsheets behind a paywall, they are the most interesting and the best I have seen. As a pensioner I do not have the spare cash for those sort of costs. Like you I spent the capital we have to bring my costs to a known amount. To ease the pain as we get even older, I probably won’t live to see a pay-back but the system brings the bills to a manageable monthly amount. They would have been zero until the WFA was removed. How do you manage on the max kW from the Gen2 inverter. Do you just accept that you will have to use topup full price electricity or do you try and make sure you are not Boiling the Kettle as you put the Microwave on?
    I went for the AIO so that we can get a full 6kW but even then we do get some over topping.
    The Northfaciing panels with bidirectional or even Perovskite could just work but much lower payback. But if green is more relevant then it will help.

    • @TimAndKatsGreenWalk
      @TimAndKatsGreenWalk  Месяц назад +1

      We don't tend to worry about the power output of the Gen 2 inverter, the amount of time it's exceeded is so small that it barely registers most days. I reckon it amounts to a couple of pence per day of peak rate power, so in practice there's no point us worrying about further optimising our lifestyles around the 3.6 kW limit. That's not to say that a higher output wouldn't be welcome, of course, but we don't let the it dictate our lives.

    For info. over the last year my NW facing panels have achieved 60% generation compared to my SE facing panels. Another advantage of NW panels is that they generate when most needed and when the export price is highest (Flux). A potential topic for future blogs could be control of oversized systems. For example I have a 13 kWp system with an 8kW inverter but only a 4.5kW max export limit, so I have to keep tweaking my Solar Edge control options to suit the conditions in order to maximise generation (profit) by minimising the amount of time when the system is ‘clipping’.

    The spreadsheet videos are great. The fact that the cost has a good correlation with how green the action is means that the green video is to an extent redundant. So I can see why I link to one and not the other. For me, saving money allows me to direct time and money on the next green thing, be it insulation, green travel or green food consumption (the various areas we have to decarbonise). As are the green planning videos-solar/heat loss etc..
    I would imagine demand shifting will become increasingly important as the grid decarbonises for 2030. Us and our providers shifting our usage, charging and even generation will be a big thing.

    Loving the videos I'd be really interested in your views on microinverters. To me, one of the big selling points seems to be "well if one breaks then you know which one, and you only lose 1 panel while its fixed" BUT the likelihood of 1 of say 10 microinverters breaking has to be at least 10x the likelihood of a string inverter breaking. Replacing a string inverter is probably a few hours work in the house, whereas replacing a microinverter in a middle panel sounds like a right faff. I bet the "warranty" only covers the product, not cost of labour to replace. I'd much rather go into a loft than onto a roof to remove panels. Lastly, surely they are more likely to fail if sat outside with big temperature fluctuations? Sounds like a spreadsheet could tell us how much extra yield you'd need, for microinverters to make financial sense for a regular rectangular array. 😇

    • @TimAndKatsGreenWalk
      @TimAndKatsGreenWalk  Месяц назад +2

      Gary did a good video on microinverters. I'm undecided. The headline reliability seems pretty good at first sight but once you've got a bunch of them the chance of one failing becomes a lot higher. As you say, getting that fixed is a bit of a pain, although I believe the warranty does include the labour in a lot of cases. Some people get the microinverters installed in the loft to make repairs easier. I think I'd try to do it that way if I had the option.

      As deleted by RUclips
      Just subscribed here.
      So 2 years & 10K. Think Media would say your right on Track.
      BTW, to get you're Bronze Play Button you need to remind RUclips probably on X/Twitter RUclips Creators channel
      They are a great bunch & a great way of getting access when RUclips are being monolithic. They can really help!
      So in about a year you will be at minimum 2OK subscribers assuming you don't get a hockey Stick inflection which would give you a out 40K.
      Which means I'm going to ask you the question I have been asking creators for nearly 10 years.
      Conservatively speaking:
      How are you going to cope when you hit 50K 2 years from now?
      And 100K plus 3 years from now?
      I asked that of channels who were at 10K are now at 500K and heading for their Gold Play Button.
      If you want to talk compost go talk to the permaculture consultant channel.
      Asking about sense of smell is like asking about Newspapers in China and wondering about all the blank spaces in the newspapers where they have been censored....
      I need higher quantities of a smell to smell things. Personally I love the subtle taste of Garlic, I usually add a whole bulb to help the taste. I have hearing & sight issues both Neurological & Physical
      I am assuming you know Fully Charged Show who are based in Cheltenham. And Transport Evolved has just celebrated their 100th podcast at the Vancouver Fully Charged Show.
      Also someone was saying about you being involved in mobile servicing of EV's in Cheltenham and he had is Skoda Enqak serviced with whomever they are.
      What you haven't mentioned is any of your RUclips creation stuff. What you shoot with, how do you light etc.
      Btw my interest in all this is that If I didn't have CFS/ME, I would have been uploading to Google Video before they bought RUclips. But I haven't because just writing this, which you may never see, if RUclips yet again censors my words, has wiped me out and I will need to sleep for a few hours just to be able to walk again!

    With regards Patreon, it would definitely change your relationship with these videos, and it may not be all positive. I’d think carefully about essentially selling content to a small niche whereas right now you have total freedom.
    Just my two cents but unless this is your main income which it clearly isn’t, it seems like you might end up complicating your life.
    Best of luck either way.

      Yeah, that's my concern too. It would be more about what extra I could provide over and above what I already do on the channel, it wouldn't be at the expense of the channel. At least that's what I'd hope to achieve. Still requires some more thought, for sure.

    I just cancelled all my Patrion and RUclips memberships as I never use any perks.

    Congratulations on 100. Think I pretty much watch all of the other channels and friends that you recommend, and it was probably through watching Nigel’s videos that brought me to yours. Mind you and I both bought GivEnergy inverters and batteries and Nigel wasn’t that keen on them, so there we are.
    r/e Patreon/YT membership, the fees are pretty awful. One alternative on another channel I subscribe is his own member platform (on squarespace) which is basically a link to his unlisted member YT videos - BTS, members only additional content w/o adverts.
    Another option is to do the buy-me-a-coffee thing for spreadsheets or other resources.
    For me after the heat pump and solar panels it’s been Home Automation that I’ve got into, not as wide-ranging as Oli but predominately battery automation with batpred which is amazing. You might consider that as a direction to look at.

      I have a Buy Me A Coffee account and have the link showing on my more recent spreadsheets (and at the end of every video), but it's a donation rather than required payment. I very rarely get anyone donating but it's nice when it happens! That's one thing I've considered changing, but I can already hear the complaints. The fees for Patreon are not as bad as RUclips memberships, which is why I'd prefer that route. But I'd have to figure out what I can do that's additional to what I already do, rather than take away some of the existing stuff, I think. Still mulling it over!

      I have not as yet. Her creations are typically framed and mounted on the walls rather than worn.
