  • this is my introduction to the Kari Band. This is the studio band that backed Babymetal. It also included Mikio FUJIOKA, the guitarist that tragically passed away in Jan 2018. What a huge loss for music, let alone his family and musical companions.
    This group is phenomenal and I need to hear more!

    Japanese-speaker here. In case anyone is wondering, ”kari” means "tentative", "temporary", etc. because that is the nature of this band with its non-fixed members. Needless to say, it also makes a perfect wordplay with "Kami Band". "Kami" means "god", "godly", etc.

    I get what you mean. Its economy of motion combined with an almost effortless playing style, by all 3 of them. Soft hands is what I call it as opposed to the asses and elbows style, lol. Neal played like that. Every sound was at his finger tips and made it look effortless. All three of play like that in this video. Really what struck me is the how almost gentle the guitarist made his playing look even though you know he's working hard. Crazy talent be like that. The really good ones make it look natural.

    Little correction: the guitarist here is Satoshi Oka who is a student of Mikio Fujioka who replace him in this band after Mikio sadly died, a lot of his style of playing here is very very inspired by Mikio like his use of the whammy bar while picking to modulate the sound which is something Mikio does a lot and makes everything sound soo smooth,.

    Kari means temporary or provisional. Both a pun on Kami band and a good name for a band of session musicians. And they are the members of the live band for Babymetal, not the players on the studio recordings. Check out the videos of the Kari band with friends where they have more players like a keyboardist and a saxophonist.

      @@rakjr6 You are correct that it is generally assumed, but realistically we have no idea who their session musicians are, like you pointed out they do not usually identify their band members beyond the girls.
      However logically speaking, seeing how they have an existing relationship with the kami band members who also happen to be active as session musicians, well... 1+1=2.
      I'm not saying they are definitely involved but I don't think there's any reason to readily dismiss that thought either.

    The guitarist in this video is Satoshi Oka

  • @JuanSan66
    @JuanSan66 2 года назад +27

    Fantastic sir! Glad you liked them. In this composition the guitarist is not Mikio but Satoshi Oka, Mikio's student and in charge of replacing him in the Kari Band. The initial composition of the band (Fujioka, BoH and Maeta) were part of the main impulse of the Kami Band and Baby Metal (in the albums Babymetal and Metal Resistance) together with Takayoshi Omura. They all appear in your Rondo of Nightmare reaction video. This song belongs to the Nimaime album that the Kari Band wrote as a testament and tribute to Mikio, and the money that was collected from its sale (and that of a very emotional tribute concert where they shared the stage with Omura, you would have to be dead not to cry listening to The Hill of Wisteria) went to Mikio's family so that they would not have financial difficulties at that hard time. The guitar phrasing in Samurai Groove is based on a phrasing that Fujioka worked on before his death and has been faithfully reproduced by his former student Satoshi Oka. I always get emotional with the death of Mikio, for me the most subtle and emotional guitarist of an era. I will always remember the picture of him with Kanami and Akane wearing the tiny hat, and the happiness on his face when he had a guitar in his hands. I'll leave a couple of links on your Patreon, not for you to make a reaction but for the mere enjoyment of his music. Thank you very much!, It has been quite exciting.

      Koba's prodigious insight was that he could think of incorporting the girls with these musicians. As you know, 10 years ago, the girls were talented but not commercially succesful yet and the musicians were ultra-skillful but unknown instrumetalists (only limited maniac fans know them). If Koba continued to use that fake band and digitaly mixed tracks that were easily affordable in his budget, we could not see the sunlight we currently have.

    Satoshi Oka is considered to be probably the number one student of Mikio Fujioka. He really does embody a great deal of Mikio's style, that he didn't get much chance to demonstrate with Babymetal. Satoshi has an album of his own compositions out, called 'Zephyr'. It fits well with the Kari Band material, well worth digging into. It features a couple of notable guest appearances. On one track, Satoshi's friend Ichika Nito appears. Ichika previously featured on Polyphia's last album and I believe is pretty well-known among guitarists. A couple of other tracks feature contributions from Yasutaka Nomura, a Japanese musician based in Los Angeles. Yas is possibly the least known Kami Band member, he played for Babymetal on several dates of the Lady Gaga tour in 2014. He's also close friends with Mateus Asato, another popular guitarist who also featured on Polyphia's last album.
