"Thank heaven there wasn't a song on 'The English Patient' is all I can say". Touche, Mr. Lloyd Webber. Touche.
One of the best lines I have ever heard in an acceptance speech!
FUNNIEST. LINE. EVER.
haha.... a jab directly to the English Patient....
Best line on a Oscar speech 🥳🥳🥳🥳
Can someone explain it please?
I think performers should be apart of the songs nomination/win. That’s what make the song so great and brings it to life
You Must Love Me is a true masterpiece! Madonna showed a stellar performance that night too. And I'm surprised they didn't nominate any Whitney Houston song from "The Preacher's Wife"
JEALOUSY DARLING , see yourself from this three witches , and their comments and clearly supporting barbra, , [you think , they vote for MADONNA?
Sofia Santos Jealousy? Nice try. I'm a huge Whitney and Barbra fan but their songs were weaker than Madonna's You Must Love Me
alex blend the best actress category at that year was too tough, frances mcdormand in fargo.. emily watson in breaking the waves and kristin scott thomas in the English patient... i mean not a chance for madonna
Madonna just nails that song, doesn’t she? Just a heartbreaking rendition. I wish she would get more good roles like this - we know from her beautiful performance in this film, as well as her sassy debut in “Desperately Seeking Susan,” that this lady can ACT. It’s funny - I was hoping “That Thing You Do!”’s titular piece would bring home the Oscar, as I practically worship the late Adam Schlesinger. But this is a deserving choice as well. Congrats to the legendary Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber - nice to see him become a member of the EGOT club. For the record, Mr. Schlesinger was nominated for an Oscar, two Tonys and won two Emmys and a Grammy. I feel certain he would have eventually attained membership in this exclusive club, if the coronavirus had not cut his life short.
Phạm Phương Thảo Was glad for Francis - but feel Watson should have won. My God, what a performance!
I'm glad they thanked Madonna
MADONNA!
🥕🥕 hi
Being selected from many great & aspiring actors to play that part, Getting the approval, respect & honor from Andrew Llyod Webber, Tim Rice & Alan Parker is a big Win to Madonna even though the Academy snob her great performance. She doesn't need the voice of Patti Lupone but she's a great story teller & performer that touches the heart of many viewers.
they are so funny.. :) love the chemistry between the presenters
Nadia are you blind? dont you see they have been sarcastic, celebrating the no nomination for MADONNA, and clearly supporting Barbra streisand///?
@@sofiasantos4558 they were not…
I believe this is the second time that Madonna sung an Oscar winning song.
You are correct.
What was the first one
Madonna was robbed of an Actress nomination
That implies she gave a good performance...which she didn't
Acting was shite, singing was perfect = no oscar which is for acting.
@@jonc3295 her acting in Evita was fucking incredible, even if she was “singing” most of the time she was on screen (i put singing between quotation marks since she wasn’t singing live)
😂😂😂
In what way 🧐
Such a shame Madonna wasn’t nominated in Best Actress category.
It was disgusting she nailed the part of evita
LOL
She deserved it way more than McDonrmand did
@@richardcleveland6949 she won the oscar lol
@@richardcleveland6949 OH my I think you need your eyes ears and taste checked.
OMG! Goldie Hawn! I just love her and her movies. She looks stunning here.
That 3! Together again!
The 90s was the best of everything!!!
I've heard all this songs, and i loved them but i think Bells of Notredame from the Hunchback of Notredame should have been also nominated. It's a beautiful song. But also the winner its a well deserved one.
+Oscar Acosta Rodriguez i say someday from the hunchback of notre dame
Agreed. But I used to think it should’ve been “Someday.” Luis Miguel the Mexican singer was at the ceremony that night and I could’ve think he would have performed it up there because I liked his Spanish version and he would have done an amazing job performing the English version better than All-4-One
Andrew Lloyd Webber is the John Williams of Musicals!!!
That English patient jibe was apt and hilarious
Madonna sure got robbed for not getting a nomination for best actress. She would have won hands down
I agree she deserved a nomination. But hell, if they weren’t going to nominate that fine performance, they sure as hell weren’t going to give it to her. A pity. Madonna’s a much better actress than she gets credit for.
No
Absolutely no way Madonna beats Frances McDormand. No sir.
@@FlabbyTitmuss fargo sucked
@@emmalancaster2896 No she isn't
Es una canción hermosa y Madonna la interpretó maravillosamente
I crack up every time I see this clip since I was 16. Too bad they cut off the great intro
Goldie is too cute!
All nominees are all great music/songs!
The Oscars used to be so fun and enjoyable to watch. I miss the grownups with their classy wit and good humor. I bet if these shows were rebroadcast in full, they would pull in 3 times as many viewers than today.
Not sure about the viewers, but they didn't try too hard as they do now. The chemistry between these ladies was genuine and funny. I have never had a genuine chuckle watching the Oscars over the past10+ years. it's just so contrived and fake now.
@@lepetitchat123 Even with all the craziness going on back then, at least you could count on Hollywood and Late Night to make us realize that we are all human and need a good laugh and a smile and not to take ourselves to seriously. It was almost as if it was a requirement to find humor to keep everyone from going off the rails. And I am talking about benign good natured fun that wasn't malicious on purpose but funny in context.
@@lepetitchat123the chemistry is great between these 3 ladies is so good because they all have been friends for many years and acting for many years. It wouldn't surprise me if they had homes near eachother. Lol.
@@williamthomas1 It's still like that on late night television. When I tune in and watch I still find the late shows funny but I don't watch as much as I use to. It's the Oscar's that haven't been that great. The last time the Oscar's had a great show I think was the year Will Smith smacked Chris Rock. I thought it was a great show until Will ruined the show. I still can't believe he did that.
Hello Oscars?
Get these three women to host next year, plzzzz
1:25 RIP Adam Schlesinger. The virus took you way too soon
Agree completely. He deserved the Oscar, too.
Madonna should have been nominated for Best Actress. People cheered with the mention of her name.
"The _yentas_ of Eastwick" LOL
Miss Billy Crystal... such a kind, generous and funny man!!!
LMFAO 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣. I've always felt he was a big Jewish queen on the down low.
Come on girls let's enjoy some Matzah Big Ball Soup! 😂😂😂😂😂
While I do agree with some people in the comments that “I Believe I Can Fly” from Space Jam should have been nominated, I don’t agree that it should have won. Mostly due to the recent controversies of singer R. Kelly. The win wouldn’t age well. If another song were to win in place of “You Must Love Me”, I’d rather pick “Out There” or “Someday” from The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
I agree. This is alittle surprising. i felt like whitney and r kelly should have been nominated.
The Mexican singer Luis Miguel was at the ceremony that night and I could’ve thought he also would’ve been there because he was going to perform “Someday.” I like the Spanish version so much that I prefer his rather than All-4-One's.
well deserved award
The song in the movie was touching millions of hearts , and was made speccially for MADONNA for the movie, the rendition that night was really deep and felt from the bottom of her soul, she really was EVITA and she had connection with ARGENTINA, , im argentinian so i know
and she wasnt nominated , because jealousy from the part of the many actresses who didnt got that chance, [you can see this three witches , clearly supporting Barbra and her song, and the little stupid comment from bette midler about the rendition of the songs, ] , jealousy is a really ugly feeling and so sad , this three succesful actresses are living proof,
I've come to realize Hollywood is ok with anyone who doesn't speak to much truth or any truth. It's a town where they ask you what you do for a living before they ask you your name. I stayed there for a few months and I felt like everyone was a stepford robot, so what do you do, so what do you do!!! LMFAO 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣. Sometimes it felt very eerie to be completely honest. I was born and raised in New York City. I'm accustomed to brutal honesty. If you like it or not. 😂
Andrew Lloyd Webber A Legend
I LOVE when Keaton tells Goldie to shut up 😂 so cute
Was anyone surprised that not one song from the Hunchback of Notre Dame nor "I Believe I Can Fly" from Space Jam got the nomination?
Please upload Alan Menken & Howard Ashman winning for both The Little Mermaid and Beauty & the Beast, Stephen Schwartz winning for The Prince of Egypt, Phil Collins winning for Tarzan, Jorge Drexler winning for The Motorcycle Diaries, Melissa Etheridge winning for An Inconvenient Truth, and Ryan Bingham & T-Bone Burnett winning for Crazy Heart!
And why should someone do all that???
I believe I can fly from Space Jam should have been nominated here.
@Reginald Wilson I disagree. Considering the bad reputation R. Kelly has nowadays, the Oscar shouldn’t go to a sexual abuser, a kidnapper and a child pornographer. If a different film is to win instead, then it should be “Someday” or “Bells of Notre Dame” from “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”.
@@hunterolaughlin Cancel culture from the future, my god.
Literally any of the songs from Hunchback could've EASILY won the oscar!
Preferably Hellfire.
@@sorenthefilmbrony I would prefer “Someday” or “Bells of Notre Dame” as the winner for Best Original Song if any song from Hunchback of Notre Dame would win in place of “You Must Love Me” from Evita.
meh. the songs from the Plamondon musical are much better
Because you loved me should have won
Too bad none of the songs from The Hunchback of Notre Dame were even nominated.
Such an underrated score and the songs too!
Wow those five nominations! Could have been 1 of the 5.
Thank heavens, there wasn’t a song in The English Patient is all I can say. LOL 😂 🤣😆
Madonna deserves the oscar for that song! She performed it!
QUEEN MOTHER MADONNA
"I think I know Mutt, too." Idk, I just love that.
porque no enfocaron la cara de Madonna cuando dijeron la cancion ganadora, si ella fue la interprete
And now they're both EGOT winners
Yeah isn't that something?
Adam Schlesinger probably would have eventually been one, had he not died of CV-19 this April. Nominated for an Oscar, two Tonys, winner of two Grammys and one Emmy, he was an amazing talent. His “That thing you do!” deserved the Oscar IMHO, but the one that won was beautiful and memorable, so I can’t complain too much.
So Bette was not a fan of Frances McDormand? She voted for Diane as she said.
Do you have the performances from 1997?
Does anyone have The Wonders' performance of That Thing You Do? Looking for it after the COVID stream on the 17th.
There’s the soundtrack recording. The band didn’t actually perform at the Oscars, since the actual performers of the song were not in the film.
@@emmalancaster2896 But they were there right?
Justin Litke I’m not sure. On the soundtrack, Mike Viola of “The Candy Butchers” did the actual lead vocals on “That Thing you do!” with Adam Schlesinger (who wrote the song) performing back up vocals and playing bass. Rick Elias & Scott Rogness were two of the other musicians who made up the fictional Wonders. It’s been awhile, but I seem to remember they had some dancers attired in mod 1960s dress who danced to the song at the Oscars. The voices singing the song at the Oscars were never mentioned in the telecast, but I don’t recall them sounding like the musicians who actually played the song. That’s been over 20 years ago, so it’s hard to know. If you like the Wonders, I would strongly urge you to seek out Fountains of Wayne. They are one of the best American bands of the last 50 years, IMHO.
Does anyone know the story behind why Madonna did not appear on-stage to "accept" the award? I realize she was technically not nominated, or the actual winner, but I am wondering if she was ever asked this question given she was obviously in the room.
Madonna 👑🤘🏼
I'm Ordained ministry, sprayed Goldie. Prime minister since seventeen. Cynthia Corcoran UN as Madonna, also and sang evita. Titanic Beatle juice and more. All.
Best part 2:07
Shockingly, Miramax has never got an Oscar in this category
❤
My fa3 host billy crystal
Was that shade necessary Bette? I hope you felt like a fool when they shouted her out for coming to sing the song. Thank you Billy Crystal for calling them out too!
Beautiful song but this should have been Diane Warren’s year for Because You Loved Me…
Why is the portion of the Evita clip (Eva at the train station) cut off from the winning clip...? If you can include Billy Crystal's funny monologue after their acceptance speech, surely that less than 15 sec scene can be included?
2:07
Bette was actually right, it's Barbra StreiSAND. Barbra'd actually correct people if they call her streisEND

it should have been Because You Loved Me or I Finally Found Someone, but the joke about English Patient was gold!
That film doesn't age well. Boring af

Jason Smith Juliette binoche
Bette Midler takes a petty dig at Madonna, and Madonna's song wins.
What does he say at 2:07??
Thanks heavens there wasn't a song in The English Patient.
"Well thank heavens there wasn't a song in The English Patient is all I can say." This was the year The English Patient won 9 out of its 12 nominations and one of the few categories it didn't have a nomination in was Best Original Song.
Also, the comment was even funnier because it would have been ridiculous that a movie as tragic as the English Patient would feature a pop love song. And, to add insult to injury, it would have probably won in that category, too, had there been one.
Was Bette Midler throwing shade when she said "full throated, ferociously committed vocal performances"?
AyPapi Mercado I’m afraid so.
Yeah, she’s always throwing shade at Madonna every chance she gets
Goldie is Joss Stone. I'm only one L. Visa
This should’ve been nominated and won:
From Space Jam
“I Believe I Can Fly”
Music and Lyrics by Robert Kelly
I don’t know. I can see your point about R. Kelly should have been nominated for “I Believe I Can Fly”, but winning the Oscar.... well, considering R. Kelly’s reputation nowadays, I think it was probably for the best the Academy gave it to Tim Rice & Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Was that madonna shade at 0:15
Think so. She’s always had a thing for Madonna.
And Oscar® for the interpreter of the song? 🤔🙄
+ « Poor M , She Never Won This Shit !! » =(*
That Celine or Streisand’s songs didn’t win is still such a WTF!?
This list should have been:
You Must Love Me
I Finally Found Someone
That Thing You Do
Hellfire
I Believe I Can Fly (WINNER)
Dude, I’m gonna have to disagree with you on giving the Oscar to I Believe I Can Fly. Considering the infamous bad reputation R. Kelly is in, it would be bad to give an Oscar to a sexual abuser, kidnapper and child pornographer. Even if I Believe I Can Fly did win, R. Kelly’s reputation would reflect badly on it years later.
@@hunterolaughlin This is before all that. I'm only going by at that time. Besides all that is irrelevant to his music.
@@supermariofan03 Still though, I’m not comfortable with the idea of giving an Oscar to a sexual abuser like R. Kelly. If it was a different singer that sang and perform the song, then I wouldn’t have a problem with the song winning. But since it’s by R. Kelly, I think the snub is justified this time. A sexual abuser like him never deserves an Oscar, even if his song or music is good.
You Must Love Me is so much better than I Believe I Can Fly
@@supermariofan03 Well, your choice has certainly aged well hasn’t it? My apologies for coming back to this, but with the recent news of R.K. Kelly’s 30 year incarceration, I felt I had to come back here. And now with that recent news, I feel more validated that the Academy, despite their bulls***, at least made one right decision in not awarding R.K. Kelly an Oscar. I think it’s for the best to change your choice if you don’t want other commenters criticizing you for choosing an R. Kelly song.
the 69th academy awards should be ashamed at themselves for not nominating these other song from a movie made in 1996: 'someday' from 'the hunchback of notre dame' missing you' from 'set it off' i believe i could fly' from 'space jam' and 'change the world' from 'phenomenon'

the fact that _I Believe I Can Fly_ from _Space Jam_ wasn' even nominated[!] is one of the burning indignities in Oscar history.
that's a _beautifully_ written, iconic song written for a movie that happened to be terrible. well frankly, _Evita_ was all that great, either.
the Oscars have a FAMOUSLY terrible history with music, though - John Stewart said it best right after it happened: the Three Six Mafia won their Oscars™ before Martin Scorsese did. oh well! it's not for me. that's all. what do i know? probably nothing, you're right.
It was surprising that song wasn't nominated , but with what's been going on with R.Kelly right now it would still make the 1997 years original song win........well..............
Bette is certainly an uppity - - - - here isn't she!?
Oscar winning songs now are so forgettable.
Ahem. I would like to let you know that some Oscar winning songs such as “Over the Rainbow”, “White Christmas”, “When You Wish Upon a Star”, “The Way You Look Tonight”, “High Hopes”, “Theme from Shaft” and “My Heart Will Go On” are still remembered and sung. Truth hurts, eh?
You Must Love Me is an incredible song, and the performance by Madonna is better than any other performance of the song since it was added to the live productions of Evita in 2006.
