No Howard Ashman = no Disney renaissance. It’s as simple as that. I feel that not enough people give this legend enough credit for what he’s given the world. Disney as we know it may never have been if it weren’t for him.

Howard Ashman knew he was dying from AIDS but he did not abandon his work. He stayed dedicated and committed to it. Making "Beauty and the Beast" was difficult for everyone because of Howard's illness. Howard was too sick to travel so the whole cast & crew along with the storyboards and scripts had to keep coming from L.A. to NYC to see Howard when they needed him to work with them. When they weren't able to go to NYC, they would perform and have Howard listen over the phone and then listen for his feedback. It was difficult but it was well worth it.
Howard Ashman, and many other heroes like him, paved the way for the LGBT community we know today. We stand on their shoulders, humbled in gratitude for their fights and their sacrifices. This was the first time a gay partner accepted such an award, and it was the first time AIDS was mentioned so openly. It will stand tall, as a proud moment in our community's history.
He started work on the songs for Aladdin too. He finished about half the lyrics before his death and Tim Rice was brought in to finish the other half-and while he did a fine job, Alan Menken has never had a better creative partner than Howard Ashman.
@Alexander Edward Pytko Words well written and so true. A true definition of an unknown hero who was able to achieve so much and impact so many people's lives with his beautiful musical talent. A truly remarkable person and sad that he had to leave us so soon. But his legacy will live on forever.

Howard Ashman was a musical genius who displayed incredible bravery while battling for his life to bring us some of the most memorable songs ever written.
I watched the making of BATB on the blu-ray version and it reveals a lot. I was too young but up until then I never knew the guy that made this amazing music was dying of AIDs. It was a sad he didn't survive to see the success of this movie. But I think he knew from the early screening that had people standing up and cheering in the theater.
Spontaneous, original , endearing. You have love or at least admire Liza Minnelli and Shirley MacLaine and..... Billy Crystal.... well by far the best MC of the Oscars.
Howard Ashman was something special. This kind of person you only have a few off per generation. The man knew he would be dying, his body decayed around him and still.he went on, and on and on. He wanted to make his last big opus to be the best damn thing he ever did. And imo he did. Beauty and the Beast is not just my favourite Disney Movie but one of my favourite movies in general. The characters, the villain, the songs, everything ,absolutely everything checks and works out Perfectly. Not to forget the stunning and beautiful animation. Howard saved Disney Animation there is no doubt about it and no one is more deservant of this big legacy then Mr. Ashman. I thoroughly enjoyed "Evermore," but I think "How Does A Moment Last Forever" would be my choice for Best Original Song. It's so touching, and you can't go wrong with Alan Menken either way...
I have to disagree with not going wrong with Alan Menken. If you've seen the movie Sister Act with Whoopi Goldberg, you'll be disappointed with the stage musical he wrote lyrics for and composed. In my opinion, most of his non-Disney work sucks.
This song is and will always be the best Disney song ever written, it represent what true love is through its magistral poetic lyrics with a touching music. Thank you Mr. Ashman and Mr. Menken, together you created tunes that will live forever.
Why didn't they bring out Howard Ashman's Oscar, too? It would've been nice to have seen his partner holding the statuette when he accepted for Ashman.

reptongeek To keep competition fair? Honestly, I haven't cared about this category anymore since the '90s. Even then, when all the Disney songs were dominating the category, it's not like the non-Disney competition were always that great. I love the idea behind this category, but I lump it with Costume Design and Makeup as one of the categories that aren't that necessary to cinema (at least on a standout level, like period dramas with Costume Design. But all movies can't exist without Production Design, Editing, Cinematography, and some sort of Soundtrack if you're not a silent film) but whose nominees don't always stand the test of time, except the winner and perhaps the winner's biggest competition (or, in the case of upsets and injustices, what should've won. "Rainbow Connection" vs. "It Goes Like It Goes" anyone?). A true Oscar category should have, besides its winners, great films made with great craft filling in the rest of the category; that, or at least interesting nominees.
I don't mind having the Best Original Song category, but the nomination process needs a bit of work. For instance second songs on the end credits aren't elligible for instance. Secondly all songs have to be entered to be elligible which results in things like Let It Go being the only elligible entry from Frozen because Disney didn't enter any of the other songs like my personal favourite For The First Time In Forever
One of the great inspirational albums was "How Great Thou Art" (9/12/1977, RCA Records) which was Kate Smith's wonderful achievement of songs including "I May Never Pass This Way Again" that would fit everybody's moods for this Grammy Award winning theme song - arranged & conducted by Glenn Osser. See for yourself. (c) 1977 RCA Records, New York, New York, U.S.A.
AngeFemininMasculin2 I'm a fan of both.. you don't have to bash one thing to like another. Please understand that. They're both beautiful songs with beautiful meanings.
The irony of people against story time with drag queens is that queer people have been the most profound source of how we entertain our children for centuries. The writer Hans Christian Andersen who wrote the little mermaid was also a gay man. I believe we are doing the queer community and ourselves a disservice by alienating, especially while cherishing the beautiful memories they gave us during childhood.
In Britain there is the annual christmas tradition of the British Pantomime which was theatrical performances with often a pantomime dame (man dressed as a woman) and adults would bring children to these shows and thought nothing of it. It's just now became trendy to bash and hate on queer people and calling everything woke, when there was plenty of queer artists in all media for decades leading up to now. We have legends like Elton John, Freddy Mercury of Queen, some gorgeous leading men of hollywood from the 50's and 60's like Rock Hudson and Marlon Brando. The haters just don't get it and should learn to respect the artists who graced their dull lives with true art and expression over the last century and beyond.
This was revolutionary - it's hard to believe in this day & age when gay people are all over TV, but back in '92 very few, if any, people were out on TV, and an entertainer who came out risked career ruin. Thank God times have changed.
During this oscar i was only 2 months old now iam 32 and iam taking animation classes now and going to California when iam done with College and iam gonna be at an oscar iam gonna be nominated for an animation short film

In some cases, you're thinking about Barbra Streisand has wrapped her directing career which finally coming to an greater end with the long awaited troubled adaptation of "The Mirror Has Two Faces" for Sony Pictures Releasing, Phoenix Pictures, Regency Enteprises, Barwood Group, Kingsgate Films and ICON Entertainment International in 1996. This entertaining romantic hit film has been nominated for two Academy Awards in 1997. And after that, they would be no more.

Terrific pre-announcement banter by Minnelli and MacLaine, as they more or less ask Streisand for a job. But think about it.......wouldn't that combo result in a fantastic movie?
The acceptances were short but full of dignity & delivered with the utmost of poise. This Era of AIDS is now largely forgotten. When we speak of this time & place to those not born who are now adults, you will learn that cross-generational communications comes with this sort of challenge. Be patient, if you are the older party. The younger people need to hear what we have to say, but please be kind, please be patient. They will face other challenges. This is part of how life works & the human condition (as my English Literature Professors from Butler University used to tell us) is something that always seems to have times that have passed & challenges that have yet to be understood. We must keep the channels of communication open to keep memories "alive" & to better share our experiences on all sides of generational & Era divides. Build bridges, not walls.

I love the Barbra call out. I also love how happy Barbra looks like!
Oh my god Liza and Shirley shouting out Barbra in the audience. I hope Howard was watching this from heaven lmao
Oh my, it's so cute how Alan hold his wife's hand Janis at 3:50
Howard Ashman was the Boomer Oscar Hammerstein. A genius. Bless his memory
the way liza says be our guest love it
That sounds very nice n sweet
yep
Imagine if Howard Ashman avoided AIDS and walked down to the stage to accept alongside Alan Menken, that would've been sweet.
In Loving Memory of:
Howard Ashman
1950-1991 ❤️😢🪦
Thank you for all your music work.
He gave a mermaid her voice, and a beast his soul. ❤
You're Welcome!
Liza is beautiful. She has a face like no other. She would be a model nowadays if she were tall.
Two Amazing Talents!!!
We miss you, Howard
that guy is a freaking skyscraper
REST IN PEACE HOWARD ASHMAN!
Demi Moore saying “I’m gonna cry” is a mood
@@sladeevans1242 nah I've rewatched it a dozen times, she's says "I'm gonna cry"
One of the great inspirational albums was "How Great Thou Art" (9/12/1977,
RCA Records) which was Kate Smith's wonderful achievement of songs including
"I May Never Pass This Way Again" that would fit everybody's moods for this
Grammy Award winning theme song - arranged & conducted by Glenn Osser.
See for yourself. (c) 1977 RCA Records, New York, New York, U.S.A.
RIP Howard ❤️❤️🎶🎶
Take that, "Let It Go" !! ^^
"Beauty and the Beast" fan forever !
AngeFemininMasculin2 I'm a fan of both.. you don't have to bash one thing to like another. Please understand that. They're both beautiful songs with beautiful meanings.
Eren the Gay meh Let it Go is overrated
I prefer Frozen even though I was born in the 90's. I'm just a tough critic
L Ll it's overplayed...not Overrated at all....
I'm not crying...fuck that was a beautiful speech and timeless song
Liza looking good here!
Love LIZA !!!!
Kudos to Alan for giving thanks along with Howard for the vocalists who helped make the song iconic
RIP the brilliant Mr. Ashman
This was revolutionary - it's hard to believe in this day & age when gay people are all over TV, but back in '92 very few, if any, people were out on TV, and an entertainer who came out risked career ruin. Thank God times have changed.
Shirley Maclaine should be considered to host the Oscars
Howard Ashman ❤
Barbra in Fortuny, looking gorgeous ❤
During this oscar i was only 2 months old now iam 32 and iam taking animation classes now and going to California when iam done with College and iam gonna be at an oscar iam gonna be nominated for an animation short film

@@johndalton3180 thank u
All the nominated songs from that year were such a big part of my childhood...
You can tell Howard had a great impact on the lady in black her voice strated cracking whenever she would mention Howard's name. He really was a special person that impacted many people in positive ways.
Oh, wouldn't that have been wonderful if Barbra, Liza and Shirley worked together? I'd love it!
"Nice Try" - Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo.
it's 1 AM and i'm crying due to an acceptance speech that happened 29 years ago. oh boy
Thanks for showing us Douglas at the end.
Yes Barbra Streisand would be awesome as a director
She is. She won a golden globe for best director
In some cases, you're thinking about Barbra Streisand has wrapped her directing career which
finally coming to an greater end with the long awaited troubled adaptation of "The Mirror Has
Two Faces" for Sony Pictures Releasing, Phoenix Pictures, Regency Enteprises, Barwood Group,
Kingsgate Films and ICON Entertainment International in 1996. This entertaining romantic hit film
has been nominated for two Academy Awards in 1997. And after that, they would be no more.
Imagine writing beauty and the beast and having Liza give you the award
And to think her mom as Dorothy was inspirational for Belles blue dress

Terrific pre-announcement banter by Minnelli and MacLaine, as they more or less ask Streisand for a job. But think about it.......wouldn't that combo result in a fantastic movie?
OMG BARBRA 😭😍
RIP Howard Ashman
We never got that movie with Barbra Streisand Shirley MacLaine and Liza Minnelli
They’re still alive though
Why should they? Huh?
THERE WASA TIME WHEN LIZA WAS STUNNING REALLY BEAUTIFUL NOT JUST INTERESTING OR STYLISH BUT BEAUTIFUL
Two ladies I love!♥️
