One of the rare occasions where the eventual Oscar winner (McDormand) fails to win the Golden Globe. I was happy Madonna won here, but the reason for her snub is primarily because of her quoted response when asked later if she thought she would be a Oscar nominee and if the award meant a lot to her; she said: "Yes, and yes." Oh well. 1996 BEST ACTRESS OSCAR NOMINEES Brenda Blythen, "Secrets & Lies" Diane Keaton, "Marvin's Room" Frances McDormand, "Fargo" ***WINNER*** Kristin Scott Thomas, "The English Patient" Emily Watson, "Breaking the Waves" Had this happened today, Madonna would have probably been an Oscar contender due to media hype, twitter and RUclips fame- plus the blogs. However, "Fargo" would also have probably won Best Comedy/Musical over "Evita".
Jim Carrey made the same mistake. Treating it like it's destined to happen turns off voters. Kind of like Hillary Clinton (and no I'm not a Trump supporter).
Love her or hate her She is inspiring!!!! She is so damn inspiring!!! Her power her career her determination her strength her wealth her bitchiness.... she is AMAZING
This was the right winner in the right category. Although there are comedic moments in “Fargo,” it should have been in the drama categories. In Comedy/Musical, however, there was no better than Madonna that year. With that said, she should have at least been nominated for an Oscar.
Accepting her Golden Globe as the Queen she is! Her participation making that picture is and will always be iconic and recognised for her effort and her hard work. Long live the Queen.
This is a very good speech and it tells a lot about Madonna and how she relates to her work. This is not gushy, emotional with oohs and aahs but simply thanking everyone for the collaboration. Madonna knows how important team work is and no one can do it alone. This was about work, being recognised for job well done and not about thanking boyfriends and family or everyone else.
If there is but one singular moment in the film that validates Madonna winning this award, it is the "Lament" immediately preceding (SPOILER ALERT) Eva's death. It's true, many could easily argue her acting is uneven in other places (specifically near the beginning of the film), but the "Lament" is one of those rare epiphanies of acting that, if even for a moment, take your breath away. And for that moment being caught on film, we are witness to a moment of greatness.

While I LOVE Francis McDormand, Madonna immersed herself in everything Eva Peron for a full year and she killed that performance. She cried real tears while singing live on her deathbed. She deserved the Oscar!
Do you know why she didn't? Because all the rest of her films bombed in the box office and the movie critics trashed her all the time . So it would be strange if she got a nomination for best actress although she was very good in Evita and her voice was much better than the '80s.
@@dorarouzi yeah the oscars demand a lot of their nominations on actors/actresses based on their popularity and catalog of films. Hence why Meryl Streep is always nominated
Just realized Madonna beat out Barbara for best actress on the Golden Globe awards and You Must Love Me beat her song, I Finally Found Someone, for an Oscar.
Madonna won a Golden Globe with just one name! She is the first actress to do so. She also mentioned wanting to be Evita in the movie version in 1985 for the first time. She finally did it. Haters gonn' hate!
Dick Clark, a real interviewer. And yes she deserved the Oscar. A brilliant movie, a brilliant cast. Mind you, how can you give an oscar to someone who is so close to the part herself. The false teeth and contacts seriously changed her look..very un Madonna like. My only criticism of the movie was the changing of the songs. The rainbow tour song was supposed to have the words 'a new world Madonna with a golden touch' and they changed it. Thus changed the 'saint' element in the song.
@paulouk83 You're correct, she was not nominated for an Oscar. Although she was a good sport about it considering she still performed You Must Love me at the ceremony (which ended up winning Best Song).

Also The Oscars screwed her & back in the day when she wasn't nominated for Evita even non Madonna fans said she should have been nominated for Evita.
It’s kind of amazing to consider the talent she was up against in this category. Every name a fantastic performer. This alone should have garnered her an Oscar nom, but those Academy snobs deemed her too controversial and unworthy.

@@minavamp2811 I laughed at your comment “Oscar voters recognize who really deserve the oscar nomination.” “Deserve” is subjective. It’s their subjective opinion who “deserves” it. And there’ve been plenty of noms and wins that make a lot of people scratch their heads. Take Madonna and other performers out of the equation. The Oscars, who gets nominated and who wins, is not a science. It is known to be rife with influences outside who truly “deserves” to be nominated and who deserves to win. Popularity with the public, industry politics, agents wheeling and dealing, stars campaigning, favoritism, all this plays into the results. The whole thing was only ever created as a marketing tool for the film industry. When we say an award show “made a mistake” or “got it right” we are only expressing a personal opinion. By the way I loved McDormand in Fargo but what I’m saying has nothing to do with my preferences.
@@EastSide-qc5oy there are only 5 slots for the oscar nomination. unfortunately, madonna Evita performance was not good enough to be among the 5 nominees. no one praised of her performance other than the Hollywood foreign press association made a mockery out of themselves to be a laughing stock for voting for Madonna and Evita, and the golden globe have been known to be handed out awards to such absurdity. no wonder as years go by the golden globe has lost its credibility for doing something like that. voting for madonna and evita was bad enough, and then fast forward the golden globe voted for her song masterpiece in an horrible movie w.e in 2012 was even more horrible. now we can see why things like this made the golden globe a laughing joke.
In retrospection, fate would have it that a cultural pop icon portrayed another historical icon specially in Argentina. It’s uncanny how Evita Peron’s passion, drive, rise to prominence and controversies parallels that of Madonna’s. Argentina has deep Italian roots in its gene pool and Eva Peron née Duarte descended from French and Spanish Basque immigrants. Madonna descended from Italian and French ancestry; she can relate well to Evita’s life, struggles and culture-Madonna has deep affection for Latin culture. Although there was initial skepticism in both the movie world and Argentina as to Madonna’s ability to portray Evita, Madonna overcame it all and won acclaim for this role. During her 2008 Sticky and Sweet concert tour in Buenos Aires before a massive sold out audience of cheering and adoring fans, she ended the Latin segment of her concert by serenading them with “You Must Love Me” and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina”-and many shed tears for the connection and nostalgia. The audience repeatedly chanted “Ma-do-na!! Ma-do-na!!...”We- love -you!! We-love-you!! The adulation-was stunningly touching to behold. One cultural observer wrote that Madonna’ name and fame in Argentina is reminiscent to that of Maradona-the late great Argentine football star. Just amazing!

movie and theater are very different. Madonna is the better Evite.
@@thomasmulroney7391 Andrew Webber would never say such a thing. And Madonna was not his choice for the movie role. He said after the movie was released when he was interviewed by Barbara Walters that 'She plays Madonna really".
One of the most beautiful performances of ALL TIME. ❤️❤️❤️
Madonna was absolutely robbed if even a nomination for the Oscar! This award was well deserved!🙌🙌🙌
Madonna and Marilyn Monroe have the same award for acting, each having just one.
Marilyn Monroe had been nominated once before for acting in "Bus Stop," which was the first time many critics took her seriously as an actress. Monroe was clearly a much better actress and comedienne than Madonna, but Madonna did a good job in "Evita." Neither ever got a nomination from the Academy, however.
As of now... Madonna can still get another one.
oh! really surprise me when she kissed the interviewer! She was very very very happy! and she's so sweet! TE AMO MADONNA
Nicole Kidman giving a golden globe to Madonna .....
My queens ♥️♥️
The last thing she said " make more children". Omg, so true now and Queen Madonna is really a great mother with her adopted childrens now. Lovve Madonna!!!!
She was glowing! She just had Lourdes and Evita was so well received, she looked truly happy and content. So pretty! I remember Madonna thinking that she looked "fat" that night! Can you imagine? She looked incredible! She was just not used to her slightly fuller figure from giving birth. I Love you Madonna!
I was never a fan of Madonna... until I saw Evita. She played Eva Perone masterfully!
Why not an Oscar ? She truly deserved one !! 💙💛❤
oh yeah obviously the gloden globe made the biggest mistake ever to vote for madonna and Evita over frances mcdormand and fargo, when hailed by most film critics as one of the most acclaimed performances and movies of the 90's. no wonder when comes to the Oscars, voters recognize who really deserve the oscar nomination, and madonna name is no where on the list, and all 5 women that got nominated that year deserve their spot over madonna, and rightfully so.
@@minavamp2811 MADONNA WAS THE BEST. NEXT!
I wasn’t even born in ‘97 but omg the CLASS of those nominated. Madonna, Debbie Reynolds and Barbra??? *stands up and claps* we’re never seeing all that amount of talent together again 😢
She's so cute and humble here ♥
Fan since 1984!! I was four years old♥️
She leveled the songs at least half an octave down but she was very very good in Evita... She was really iconic
That kiss at the end, so genuine
She was robbed of the Oscar.Makes me mad when they say that Nicole Kidman brought back the musical, with Moulin Rouge.Sorry Madonna did it first and better.
+doormatt2000 She was so rude to Nicole?
+doormatt2000 so true!!!!
Way better!
Nicole is better
We madonna achieved world class.
I love how real and grateful she was here....and how she and Dick Clark talked after the ceremony. "I want to rule the world!"
Madonna never gets the credit or respect as an actor that she deserves. I’m so happy that she won.
Amazing Madonna.....she defintely deserved that award and maybe the oscar too!"
Wow every single nominee is iconic
Não Basta, ser Cantora, Escritora, Empresária, dançarina, compositora, e produtora musical, tem que arrasar também sendo atriz. Eu amo essa mulher
i like how people in 90 were so light and theyselves, even when they have to introduce a nomination(Nicole kidman) she looks so natural and light...
in these days, everybody look like they need to force the camera just for look how they are wearing and how many cirguries they already have..
1996 BEST ACTRESS OSCAR NOMINEES
Brenda Blythen, "Secrets & Lies"
Diane Keaton, "Marvin's Room"
Frances McDormand, "Fargo" ***WINNER***
Kristin Scott Thomas, "The English Patient"
Emily Watson, "Breaking the Waves"
Had this happened today, Madonna would have probably been an Oscar contender due to media hype, twitter and RUclips fame- plus the blogs. However, "Fargo" would also have probably won Best Comedy/Musical over "Evita".
Jim Carrey made the same mistake. Treating it like it's destined to happen turns off voters. Kind of like Hillary Clinton (and no I'm not a Trump supporter).
“Fargo” is not a comedy and it certainly isn’t a musical. It was in the wrong category.
she looks so beautiful there!
Evita was number 1 at the UK box office for 10 weeks.
Love her or hate her
She is inspiring!!!!
Madonna isn't the best actress, but she really kicked ass in Evita. I belived her when watching it.
This the first time I've seen Evita (I shit you Gnat), and it was very enjoyable a fast pace the time went by fast. I gave her a hard time because I can't stand musicals at the time but she did a very good job. This movie from '96-2019 IT HOLDS!
Love how Carlos is rubbing her shoulder when they show Madonna looking all nervous ❤️

Who needs an oscar been MADONNA??!!! BITCHES SHE IS MADONNA!!
I’m here to do recap of Queen M! 2020 Golden Globes! ♥️♥️♥️
I agree. Madonna finally got a role that suited her and the results were marvelous. What do I know...I have a crush on her? Still in my opinion, I think it was meant to be for her to be the actress for this role.
Madonna looked gorgeous here
Amazing film an she was fantastic in it , even if u r not a Madonna fan you must be soft to think she didn't deserve it.
M A D O N N A, You deserve it!♥
While I LOVE Francis McDormand, Madonna immersed herself in everything Eva Peron for a full year and she killed that performance. She cried real tears while singing live on her deathbed. She deserved the Oscar!
Madonna-Evita! Brilliant!
She was great in it
bit of a bad joke that she didn't even get nominated for an Oscar
Do you know why she didn't? Because all the rest of her films bombed in the box office and the movie critics trashed her all the time . So it would be strange if she got a nomination for best actress although she was very good in Evita and her voice was much better than the '80s.
She would have won hands down
@@dorarouzi yeah the oscars demand a lot of their nominations on actors/actresses based on their popularity and catalog of films. Hence why Meryl Streep is always nominated
Just realized Madonna beat out Barbara for best actress on the Golden Globe awards and You Must Love Me beat her song, I Finally Found Someone, for an Oscar.
AyPapi Mercado
Omg me too!
well, MAdonna is a great actress.., look she acted so humble.
wonderful woman!
Singers and recording artists can also make great actors. Cher also comes to mind. They're both just fantastic.
Madonna won a Golden Globe with just one name!
She is the first actress to do so.
She also mentioned wanting to be Evita in the movie version in 1985 for the first time.
She finally did it.
Haters gonn' hate!
cher did it first with moonstruck and she won the golden globe plus the Oscar. so don't kid yourself.
@@minavamp2811
why bring up Cher?
Can't two women be fabulous and successful - at the same time?
@@firouz256 cher can act while Madonna can not act to save her skin.
That she beat Glenn Close, Frances McDormand, and Barbra Streisand!!! So awesome!!
@paulouk83 You're correct, she was not nominated for an Oscar. Although she was a good sport about it considering she still performed You Must Love me at the ceremony (which ended up winning Best Song).
Well deserved. LEO!
I saw a person in the audience stand and then look around and saw no one else standing so she sat back down, I really wish more people would have stood up
Madonna is an Amazing singer, song writer and Artist! Who has made some really amazing films and written mega songs! Good luck to the woman! She deserves respect! 🤗🥰💖🎤🎶🎵🎸😕🎬🎭🎥🎞️
madonna the queen !!!
And she now rules the world
Madonna queen....Brazil love Madonna.....
Multitalented QUEEN! well deserved! ❤️ 🧡 💛 💚 💙 💜 🖤
So awesome to see Madonna being interviewed by Dick Clark. When she appeared on his show American Bandstand it was her first national debut. Get to see this!
Great speech.
They probably expected her to be controversial and she wasn't. She was truly grateful and the speech was very classy.
Madonna 100000000% deserved to win this, I remember watching it live & I honestly thought she wouldn't win a Golden Globe for her iconic movie Evita & I was so happy she won for her acting & that this just showed that she really is a good actor Like in "Desperately Seeking Susan, Who's That Girl, Evita, Four Rooms, A League Of Thier Own, Shadows And Fog, Dick Tracy, Bloodhounds Of Broadway & Shanghai Surprise. Also The Oscars screwed her & back in the day when she wasn't nominated for Evita even non Madonna fans said she should have been nominated for Evita.
Evita mundial. Hizo que todos los pobres e incluso Madonna triunfaran💞💞😭😭⭐⭐🌸🌸
Wow what a stunner!
That kiss at the end... Aawwwww
It’s kind of amazing to consider the talent she was up against in this category. Every name a fantastic performer. This alone should have garnered her an Oscar nom, but those Academy snobs deemed her too controversial and unworthy.
oh yeah obviously the gloden globe made the biggest mistake ever to vote for madonna and Evita over frances mcdormand and fargo, when hailed by most film critics as one of the most acclaimed performances and movies of the 90's. no wonder when comes to the Oscars, voters recognize who really deserve the oscar nomination, and madonna name is no where on the list, and all 5 women that got nominated that year deserve their spot over madonna, and rightfully so.
@@minavamp2811 You seem to be confusing your own opinion for some objective reality.
Madonna ❤️
she acted in Evita perfectly!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow i just love Madonna ❤2024.
But at least Midler was nominated for THE ROSE. Love and Madonna weren't even nominated. I remember being so disappointed. I woke up early to watch the announcements and when she wasn't nominated it totally ruined my day. I couldn't concentrate in school, I was so mad. haha
