of course she should have. But she never made hunderds of millions for the studios. Julia Roberts did. And this was a Thank you for that. Nothing to do with great accomplishment.
Burstyn was amazing in Requiem, but I have a feeling that people prefer these type of performances - like an addict role - because they think it's harder to play these roles. And of course it's not easy to deliver such performance, but just imagine how difficult it can be to play a single mother of three, who has a big mouth, but other than that, there's nothing special, in the meaning of addiction, disability and such. Just a real, normal person. And that is a tough thing to do, to play that character so wonderfully that audiences will rememeber it, will actually notice it. And when you play a drug addict, that's already there, the audience already knows the most important thing about the character, so the actor actually has a head start IMO.
Exactly! In Burstyn's case 90 % of her acting is the role, 9 % is the director and like 1 % is her. Granted, that 1 % is flawless, but I would still give this Oscar to Julia Roberts any day over Ellen Burstyn, because Julia had to carry this movie on her own!
The best genuine reaction. Every oscar acceptance should just be spontaneous like this, it a show for entertainment --- just let it be. It so much joyous and lively. Scripted speech are boring
I think her sudden burst of laughter and "I love it up here !" is right up there with Jean Dujardin exclaiming in french "Fu.. sh.. genius !" when winning. Such an overwhelming wave of happiness, and it felt so good to watch and feel it too !
Julia Roberts was great in her performance, and it was an inspiring film in so many ways as Erin Brockovich is an outstanding person, but this was Ellen Burstyn’s night to win. Ellen’s Burstyn’s performance was so electrifying and incredibly believable. Interestingly something very similar happened to Ellen Burstyn in 1973 when she lost to Glenda Jackson ( also a brilliant actress), but in that case Ms Burstyn should have won for the Exorcist, whereas in the end the award went to Jackson for A Touch of Class; a very cute romantic comedy but no where near the stellar performance Ellen Burstyn gave. Ellen should have won three Oscars in my opinion; The Exorcist, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, and Requiem for a Dream. The only film she actually won for was Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
@@gauravw6947 Was she really a supporting actor here tho? The movie centers around both her and her son, mostly. The movie even ends with her, if i remember correctly. Honestly, if this movie just centered around Leto and his group of friends and his mother was just a small character who had her TV stolen in the beginning of the movie, this movie would not have been nearly effective. Not even close, imo. I'd most likely be able to actually watch this movie again. But it's Ellen's character and acting that truly makes this movie so painful to watch.

Julia makes,me cry every time when I watch Steel Magnolias
Me too
As much as I adore Julia Roberts and her role, Ellen Burstyn should have won the Oscar. Her role in Requiem for a Dream haunted me for the rest of my life. It is one of those performances that stick to your mind and you can never forget it.
Many awesome performances were ignored that year - Gillian Anderson ("The House of Mirth"), Nastassja Kinski ("The Magic of Marciano"), Kim Basinger ("I Dreamed of Africa"), Sandra Bullock ("28 Days")
alex blend Sandra was amazing. Thank you for including her.
Well pity them...the whole agreed that Julia is the best.
Bjork -Dancer in The Dark, Michelle Yeoh - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Her smiles lifted everybody up and brighten up the room and my life!!!
Love you so so much J.Roberts ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤍❤️
ellen burstyn is the real winner , the best performance !!!!!!
You can call Ellen the most deserved winner, but Julia still had her name called out and got to take the Oscar home which kind of makes her the real winner. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
@@davidsinnott1894it's called publicity
This is one of the funniest Oscar speeches ever! "Stick man, I see you"
Yes! Btw, what is an orchestra conductor's 'stick' officially called? :)
@@annajacob7981 That "Stick Man" was the one and only Bill Conti!
@@smurfthumper Thank you! And I just learned that the official name for an orchestra conductor's stick is wand :)
Rare moments when you don't see Meryl Streep in the nominations
Yh, The Goat is resting time😂😂
Amazing actress! This movie inspires me to think positive and beat all odds.
Best smile on EARTH!!! She is the BEST :D
Julia has the best warmest smile in Hollywood history. At this time of her career, she was truly stunning looking.
LOOOOVE her speech and how she says: I have a television so I'm going to spend some time here to tell you some things jajajajajajaja. She is amazing and maybe she wasn't the best that year but she certeanly deserve the award itself
Ellen Burstyn was clearly robbed. How can we compare Ellen´s part with Julia´s? It´s just unbelievable!!
She’s so genuine and real and unbelievably cute😍
Ellen burstyn should've won. She was magnificent.
she didn't make as much money for the studios as Julia Roberts did. They don't call it show"business" for nothing….
@@normadesmond6017 Sad but true. Anyway anyone with some brain, won't do any effort to think that Oscar, of course and as shown, doesn't mean that the film is automatically a masterpiece. At all.
@@1StIwY1And guess what????? I do have some brain…..And i do realize that some awards are given because the actor/actrice has made hunderds of millions with their movies for the studios. But it doesn't make it right, now does it? Anyone with some brain must just say and feel: what fake, this whole thing….
of course she should have. But she never made hunderds of millions for the studios. Julia Roberts did. And this was a Thank you for that. Nothing to do with great accomplishment.
Julia laughed histerically really made the day
I didn't realize Ellen Burstyn was nominated as well. I love Julia but damn, Ellen deserves that award, too!
She has the perfect personality that an actor should have... she is so amazing and deserves it so much!!
Ellen is like “I knew it.” She was robbed.
Made me tear up listening to her speak because it was straight from her soul! She is and always will be phenomenal!👏🏼❤️😍😍😍
Ellen Burstyn should have won that award
Well said......before I read your post I was ALL FOR BURSTYN. ROBBED. You're right.
@Ethan Dennis You said it well. Don't try to find excuse for Julia's undeserving. win. Ellen Bursytn deserved it in anyway.
She had one of the classiest hairstyles & dress in Oscar history
Wow! I never knew she won against Ellen Burstyn in Requiem for a Dream. That is a great movie and Ellen is one of the best actresses ever.
Favorite Oscar speech ever
The best genuine reaction. Every oscar acceptance should just be spontaneous like this, it a show for entertainment --- just let it be. It so much joyous and lively. Scripted speech are boring
4:22 - 4:25!!! This woman is so amazing!!!
Watch all the movies mentioned here. Burstyn and Roberts are both amazing. But Roberts as Erin is brilliant.
For the first 3 minutes of her speech:
Me: 😀
She smilies:
Me: 🙌🙌🙌🙌
She is so beautiful! I adore her!
DEFINITELY THAT OSCAR WAS DESERVED FOR ELLEN BURSTYN!!!! >:(
I think her sudden burst of laughter and "I love it up here !" is right up there with Jean Dujardin exclaiming in french "Fu.. sh.. genius !" when winning. Such an overwhelming wave of happiness, and it felt so good to watch and feel it too !
One of the best oscars speech i've ever watched and heard😍love her so much
Look at how adorable devito was and still is
Julia Roberts was great in her performance, and it was an inspiring film in so many ways as Erin Brockovich is an outstanding person, but this was Ellen Burstyn’s night to win.
Julia’s performance was no less, IMO… Besides, Ellen should have been nominated in the supporting actress category, maybe she could’ve won there…
@@gauravw6947 Was she really a supporting actor here tho? The movie centers around both her and her son, mostly. The movie even ends with her, if i remember correctly. Honestly, if this movie just centered around Leto and his group of friends and his mother was just a small character who had her TV stolen in the beginning of the movie, this movie would not have been nearly effective. Not even close, imo. I'd most likely be able to actually watch this movie again. But it's Ellen's character and acting that truly makes this movie so painful to watch.
@@swaymcthunder1219 Ellen’s character might be important to the film, but that doesn’t make it a leading performance, it still qualifies as a supporting role… She’s on screen for only 35 minutes in an ensemble film…
@gauravw6947 there was not actually supporting roles. The 4 actors played lead roles
Watched Requiem For A Dream last night and I'm actually offended that Julia got this over Ellen.
EXACTLY !!!
Have you seen Erin Brokovich? Julia was amazing in it.
+Let's Talk About It
Have YOU seen requiem for a dream?
GracefulDanny I've seen both movies. Both actors were incredibly strong but... Ellen got robbed here, Julia Roberts was good but Ellen's performance of the tragic Sara Goldfarb was thought prevoking, emotionally draining and every second of that performance felt real and constantly in your face.
GracefulDanny I found that movie so disgusting I walked out of the theater so I can't appreciate the performance.
Ellen Burstyn deserves this Oscar until this day
Her performance was unforgettable I'm still in shock about that finale.
But Julia's movie I can't even remember what was even about, so forgettable.
It’s the other way around for me because Julia’s performance was unforgettable and brilliant… Ellen deserved to be nominated in the supporting actress category for this role, it was a category fraud…
@@gauravw6947😂😂😂
Carlos: Correct - I never see Erin Brokovich come up in discussions or analyses of great performances. Burstyn's stunning turn in Requiem is constantly mentioned.
The greatest robbery in the history of Oscars! Ellen Burstyn deserved to win. Her performance in Requiem for a Dream was out of this world!!!!!
Requiem for a Dream is such a powerful movie. Under nominated by the Academy. Some great roles done in the same year.
Julia Roberts was very good in Erin Brockovich. Her acting was very funny and impressive, but there was Ellen Burstyn in one of the best performances ever. Björk was also better than Julia. It was a outrageous snub. So Julia, you should thank very much the Academy
+Borx Lopez Her performance was acclaimed so doesn't matter how we look at it, she won it in a fair competition.
Lol you should be the judge cuz it seems like you know everything 🙄
ugh shes such a humble legend i absolutely love her
She is ridiculously charming. How can one person embody that much confidence and humility at once?
When Laura Linney finally gets her oscar that she has deserved multiple times, I will be the first to jump up screaming.
Ok me too. I will also jump up screaming
She has the same smile & giddy like Pretty Woman! Her laugh just evolved!! I'm glad she got her award for Erin Brockovich bc omg she was mind blowing!
That was one hell of a year for best actress... all fantastic performances. Loved that Julia won but Ellen Burstyn was simply terrific.
I love Julia Roberts she’s amazing but that year the Oscar was for Ellen Burstyn she was totally robbed,I mean how can she not win?Her performance is brilliant just from another level.
Ellen burtyn's totally deserved , has amazing requiem for a dream.
Julia Roberts has such a fabulous smile!
