True, even though Julianne should have beaten Nicole, as much as I like her, for The Hours. Julianne's performance in FFH was easily her finest, and The Hours was probably her 2nd best. I think she deserved the Supporting Actress Oscar for The Hours, as well as for Boogie Nights. She was easily the best in this admittedly fairly weak field, but she's done so much great work over the decades that she really, really deserved this one.
+neworleansguy10 It's great to see her performance in Far From Heaven recognized. And yes, this may have been a "paid her dues" win, but I felt she deserved it, in any event.
Also, like DiCaprio, Moore also won on her 5th (acting) nomination (DiCaprio was also nominated once as a producer). Moreover, it was Moore who handed the Oscar to DiCaprio as well. You know who also won their 1st Oscars on their respective 5th nominations? Jeff Bridges, Jack Nicholson, Susan Hayward, and Gregory Peck. Moore and DiCaprio are in very good company in that regard.
Julianne definitely deserved it! But so did Rosamund Pike. "Amazing Amy" is the most complex female antagonist of our time and she played her remarkably well.
+Goddess Ally Brooke Female villain roles usually didn't resonate well with the Academy. I love the fact that Eddie and Julianne got oscars the same year!!! Cause Eddie almost started his career acting beside Julianne!! And her performance was amazing too in still alice, well deserved
God, I remember watching this and shouting, "Jesus, it's about time!!" She deserved an Oscar waaaaay before this! This woman is one of THE BEST actresses this world has ever known. Sheer, natural talent. And, COMPLETELY UNDER-RATED!!!
FINALLY!!! So well deserved too. The people acting as if Julianne Moore only won this Oscar because she was "over-due" are deluded. The rest of the actresses in the category gave nuanced or overly-dramatic performances. What Julianne was able to do in "Still Alice" was nothing short of awe-inspiring. She was able to give an immense depth of humanity to her character without resorting to over-dramatized or preachy acting. She was phenomenal and if you saw the film you would agree too.
Frankly I thought Julianne was a bit preachy. She had lenghtly scenes all through the film in which she is in desperation (something Julianne does in every single one of her films, like, we get it already!) not to mention that she is, actually, quite the same in every film (a kind of a shy and reserved, rich, upper-class, white woman (usually even from the 1950's) goes into a crisis of some sort). I prefered Jennifer Aniston in Cake. Now that's a twist that I didn't see coming from an actor like Jennifer Aniston (who usually does far lesser films, not that it's bad, though). That performance is more real to me, more touching and raw. Julianne is very calculated, kind of a bore, not managing to create a belieavable person up on the screen, but rather resulting in portraying a similar woman to herself, the same woman she always portrays.
JustinHenryfan As if Jennifer Aniston is any different. She seems to always play the same awkward but sweet woman who can't find true love until her romantic interest appears. *yawns* You obviously did not watch Julianne Moore playing a lesbian in "The Kids Are All Right", a religious fanatic in "Carrie", a dictator in "The Hunger Games - Mocking Jay". Therefore, let us analyze the performances instead of throwing insult, shall we ? And you should know that every actress needs to thoroughly understand her character before bringing it to life. Thus, every actress is required to be calculated and meticulous in the role she plays. It's called "acting method" for a reason. Julianne Moore might have been more prepared as she spent months for research in various Alzheimer's institutions and observing various patients so it was not a surprise that her role as Alice was calculated. The real question is whether she was able to authentically portray the accuracy of Alzheimer's disease on screen (and I can tell that she did the role justice) Jennifer Aniston's perfomance was spectacular but not enough for an Oscar buzz. She portrayed the character's anguish of chronic pain well yet the character was tainted with mostly uncontrollable anger and outright realism. It is, indeed, a breakthough performance for Jennifer Aniston but like I said, it is not enough for her role does not have enough edges. I certainly look forward to her upcoming projects though. Julianne Moore was able to show every angle of Alice Holland, from when she was lively with much brilliant intellect to her worsening condition of losing everything she knows. The character experienced a lot of losses in her life (her entire family died) and now she had to lose herself as well. The audience was able to feel her joy, pain, frustration, amnesia, and happiness. That being said, I agree that the film itself was a bore (along with the lackluster performances of Kristen Stewart and Alex Baldwin). However, her performance and hard work should be recognized.
***** You're right, I haven't seen her in The Hunger Games, yet. Nor have I seen Carrie. But I did see The Kids Are All Right, again; this average, middle-class white woman goes through a crisis. To move away from Julianne, because obviously no matter what I say about her performance and acting in general, you will not change your mind and that's fine, just as long as one has considered the alternatives. I respect you for giving a thorough reply, actually giving reasonable explanations to your opinions. However, I feel that you are wrong about Jennifer, I thought she was able to bring the movie alive with her performance. The character goes through something, we understand the character (hence not the actor, unlike with Julianne, who, for me, always plays a variation of herself. She brings this articulative, controlled manner to her performances and lets it crack at some point during the film, like with the scene in Still Alice, where Alice and her husband wake up in the middle of the night and Julianne rants about her dicease. And then she goes back to the mild mannerisms of Julianne Moore again). Whereas, again, Jennifer shows great variety not, actually always playing the girl next door, but showing the inner layers of a character, not just behaviour or some character traits that one could undertake with for example Alzheimer's dicease. To me, that kind of acting is not very interesting, doing everything textbook. But you have a different opinion and that's why art is so great, it's subjective.
***** Do you actually know anything about early onset Alzheimer's? It wasn't preachy, by any means. And how has she been the same in everything? Are you kidding? She's one of Hollywood's most versatile actresses. You're an idiot.
***** While her performance was phenomenal. A. it wasn't half as good as her work in La Vie en Rose. B. Julianne gave a much more nuanced performance. But, either way... they both are exceptional actors.
I'm going to be honest. I LOVED Julianne Moore in Still Alice. TREMENDOUS actress. But her win felt very "Scent of the Woman" for me. Meaning I felt the Academy gave her the win for robbing her at least twice in the past for Boogie Nights and Far from Heaven. But this year should have been Rosamund Pike in my opinion. Hopefully she gets her win in the future.
Two major reasons why Julianne Moore won. 1. Overdue Narrative because she’s never won before. 2. It was a pretty weak year for Best Actress as only one actress’s (Felicity Jones) movie was nominated for Best Picture. I’m happy that Julianne Moore had finally won her Oscar, but I would’ve have preferred if she had won for either “Boogie Nights” or “Far From Heaven”.
She should have won back in 2002 for her performance in The Hours. This should have gone to Rosamund Pike, who completely transformed herself into an enigmatic sociopath and gave Gone Girl its sole raison d'etre. I guess the "overdue" aspect was stronger in this case. I'm still happy for her.
Dicky Dewantara If you think about it, she played against character in both films. In one she betrays her husband and runs away, and in the other, the husband betrays her. I personally thought she delivered the most distraught storyline out of the three women in The Hours, and Nicole Kidman came very close behind. She could have won for either role, nonetheless.
+Bryan Gaitan That just shows the flawed groupthink of the Academy voters. They see notable actors on a time lapse for years, aiming to reward them with a story arc to "earn" their win, rather than simply looking at the five present day names in front of them. Pike easily should have taken this, she simply outperformed the competition.
Rosamund is great but Julianne was absolutely brilliant in Still Alice. It was one of the most visceral performances I’ve ever watched in my life, and she deffo deserved it
Julianne Moore's performance in Still Alice was nothing short of realistic and powerful. Around the time the movie came out my grandmother had passed away from Alzheimer's Disease. This disease is an evil monster that steals memories, personality, and time. It is a sad sight and I cried like a baby when this woman won the oscar. Thank you for shining light on this horrible disease.
And for all the Cotillard and Pike haters here, both were the most awarded lead actresses of 2014 in the critics circuit, with exception for the major awards shows.
Very well deserved! I cried, and cried and cried..Julianne was outstanding! It's a amazing actress that has a lot of great performances on her long career and deserved for this movie very much! Rosamund Pike was wonferful too, but that was Julianne year, no doubt
freepeople091 Julianne said there is no such things as the best actress. Julienne won because the small number of people who are the judges think she should win. That’s it. You can give your award to Rosamund Pike. Why not!
Julianne Moore just looks more and more stunning with age. Her gorgeous red hair is a beautiful colour. She has been nominated for so many years and this was just a heartbreaking and very real performance and she deserved this Oscar. Just her reaction with winning made me happy for her. Even looking at Meryl Streep cheering for her just shows that Meryl is supporting for everyone and everyone.
For me the winner was Rosamound Pike. Julianne Moore did an amazing work in Still Alice though. I just think Amy Dunne is a really complex character and Rosamound was brilliant in that role. Obviusly the Oscar for Julianne is well deserved too. That was a really difficult decition.
kate kolman Nope def. didnt look like Scarlett at all lol. Last thing she is is 'emotional or warm'. Shes seems very aloof and distant. Dont wanna say b*tchy but wouldnt be surprised. Def saw Meryl looking very, very happy for her (they've both spoken very highly of each other and think there's a professional and personal respect). She shook her head in an amazed "bout fckin time" kind of way and think she said "bravo" :D
kate kolman No, she is Sunrise Coigney, Mark Ruffalo's wife. Look at the video of best supporting actor. She was sitting next to Mark Ruffalo at that time. Maybe they are good friends because Ruffalo and Moore co-starred in The Kids Are All Right. This showed that Ruffalo and Moore are really good friends I love the fact that Streep was so happy for her. They admire each other.
I know these are old comments, but Mark himself said that his wife actually liked Moore when he worked with her and trusted her because he said she didn't trust most of his female co stars and afraid they would probably come onto him..
Ok... Can we be honest guys, for one second? Rosamund Pike gave a considerably better performance as best actress in a leading role this year. Of course nobody dares to speak it out loud, because it means criticising Mrs. Moore. But let me just make this statement: I've admired this actress AND personality for years, she deserved an Oscar regarding that she's a treasure of the American film industry and it was overdue. Still I must say it wasn't fair this year in that certain category's nominees list. And don't disagree with this, if you haven't seen Gone Girl yet. However, I guess Ros is just "not in the club of the Academy" yet and the issue of Alzheimer is as complexe as controversial, of course they decided to recognize Moore. Hey overall I can totally live with "Academy Award Winner Julianne Moore" in general, but just speaking of pure acting quality, I seriously doubt that this decision by the AMPAS can be called justified.
Vicky 12 Rosumend pike was better and here's why: Better acting not just her character but also her personality, better physical movement, more transformation, through out the film, more scene's where people were rooting for her. Overall a Better performance than Julianna Moore. I don't agree with julianna moore not winning for boogie nights, Kim Basinger was average compared to her.
I love how happy she is when she gets up there. She must have dreamed of that moment for years. Great actress, well-deserved, with Pike being the second best.
I don't think ive ever been more happier for an actress to win an award in this category my mother has Alzheimer's and was diagnosed at 54 its such a cruel disease and the way julianne moore played the role of someone living with this awful condition couldn't have been more accurate what a peformance she truly deserved that oscar and all the recognition in the world
She was phenomenal in The Hours as well. I wish they could've awarded all three leading actresses an Oscar that year. Nicole Kidman won it, but Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore were sensational too👏❤
so utterly well-deserved. the movie made me ugly cry for like 5 whole minutes when it was done. i can't even explain what came over me, but it was cathartic. also, julianne moore seems like such a genuinely wonderful person. happy for her.
strongwise Here's another observation: Alec Baldwin appeared in 2 films with Cate Blanchett The Aviator & Blue Jasmine: She won an Oscar for both movies.
I'm so glad she finally got it. She's amazingly sweet and at the same time passionate about her work and it's not like the other nominees were way ahead of her.
I am extremely happy for her. I've waited so long for this moment. She totally deserved that Oscar. She is an exceptionally talented actress. She's a kind and caring person, lovely and very nice. I don't care what others say about her win. I love her.
She deserved it, Rosamund was awesome but if you really know how halzeimer is you'll comprend how hard was her performance because she did this role incredibly well
She’s a wonderful actress no doubt about that, but more importantly she’s a really wonderful person. She always comes across as a really warm generous lady, and I love that about her more so.
I have to say, Julianne did something in Still Alice that I had no idea was possible, and I admire the cast so much for how that film came out. there are so many Alices all over the world, and I hope one day everyone who "struggles not suffers," as Alice says, will be gifted with a cure.

God, I remember watching this and shouting, "Jesus, it's about time!!"
She deserved an Oscar waaaaay before this!
JustinHenryfan
As if Jennifer Aniston is any different. She seems to always play the same awkward but sweet woman who can't find true love until her romantic interest appears. *yawns*
You obviously did not watch Julianne Moore playing a lesbian in "The Kids Are All Right", a religious fanatic in "Carrie", a dictator in "The Hunger Games - Mocking Jay".
The real question is whether she was able to authentically portray the accuracy of Alzheimer's disease on screen (and I can tell that she did the role justice)
Jennifer Aniston's perfomance was spectacular but not enough for an Oscar buzz.
*****
Do you actually know anything about early onset Alzheimer's? It wasn't preachy, by any means. And how has she been the same in everything? Are you kidding? She's one of Hollywood's most versatile actresses. You're an idiot.
Superman13195
I've seen Gone Girl, and while Pike was good, it just wasn't as good as Moore's.
a well-deserved Oscar !!!
***** While her performance was phenomenal. A. it wasn't half as good as her work in La Vie en Rose. B. Julianne gave a much more nuanced performance. But, either way... they both are exceptional actors.
*****
No, she got it because of how raw and realistic her performance was.
Kyle Roberts yea maybe if you switched out kristen stewart maybe.
Judge Dredd
Kristen
Apolo Júnior YES I WATCHED THE MOVIE 2 DAYS AGO IT WAS GREAT.
Vedant Naik I agree with you completely.
Agreed 100%. She was so good in this, but “Boogie Nights”, “Far from Heaven” and even “Safe” deserved it more. Pike should’ve been the winner here.
AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE WORD YOU WROTE
Two major reasons why Julianne Moore won.
1. Overdue Narrative because she’s never won before.
2. It was a pretty weak year for Best Actress as only one actress’s (Felicity Jones) movie was nominated for Best Picture.
I’m happy that Julianne Moore had finally won her Oscar, but I would’ve have preferred if she had won for either “Boogie Nights” or “Far From Heaven”.
Her career has taken a turn for the worse after this though😒🙄
She should have won back in 2002 for her performance in The Hours. This should have gone to Rosamund Pike, who completely transformed herself into an enigmatic sociopath and gave Gone Girl its sole raison d'etre.
I guess the "overdue" aspect was stronger in this case. I'm still happy for her.
yes she was the one who deserved it
I thought she was more deserved to win for 'Far From Heaven' than Nicole's 'The Hours'. Yeah. This one should be Rosamund's
Dicky Dewantara
If you think about it, she played against character in both films.
Bryan G The Hours? IT WAS A OVERRATED MOVIE
How the academy managed to choose between Moore and Pike is beyond me! Both were absolutely phenomenal
Beautiful speech :) she's such a lovely person and she really deserved this oscar
Facts
I thought Rosemund Pike should have won
Me too.
+Jim Halpert You should ask Pam how she feels.
Uhm not really she's a great actress tho but 2 days and one night and still alive performance is amazing
It’s Rosamund.
Rosamund is great but Julianne was absolutely brilliant in Still Alice. It was one of the most visceral performances I’ve ever watched in my life, and she deffo deserved it
The way he says Marion Cotillard though! Eargasm!
She is so beautiful and her speech was one of the best. classy woman through and through.
Makes me happy to see a big smile on her face as she says Kristen Stewart's name
Rosamund Pike should've won. Never underestimate the "overdue angle."
***** rosamund pike's monotonic delivery vs julianne moore's emotional range we have a fair winner
GodDelusion have you seen both the movies ??
If they were going with the "overdue angle", than Julianne Moore still would've won over Rosamund...
watch the hours then it is good and julianne's awesome in it
She gave a mindblowing performance but Julian honestly deserved it. Still Alice would have been average if she wasn't there.
She taught everyone that there is no such thing as Best Actress. Everyone deserves a medal
ugh, Rosamund Pike had to get one as well.
Yess sure
And for all the Cotillard and Pike haters here, both were the most awarded lead actresses of 2014 in the critics circuit, with exception for the major awards shows.
As much as I love Julianne's performace I think Rosamund's deserved it much more
LUL
yep 'gone girl'
Agree
Same here!
Julianne Moore is a bit**
One of our greatest actresses! Well deserved. Long overdue!
Very well deserved! I cried, and cried and cried..Julianne was outstanding! It's a amazing actress that has a lot of great performances on her long career and deserved for this movie very much! Rosamund Pike was wonferful too, but that was Julianne year, no doubt
"...smile KRISTEN smile STEWART.." - that was cute :)
She really deserved winning, she was incredible in that role.
I like Julianne but Rosamund Pike should have gotten this one
freepeople091 Julianne said there is no such things as the best actress. Julienne won because the small number of people who are the judges think she should win. That’s it. You can give your award to Rosamund Pike. Why not!
Julianne Moore is always brave and perfect in her performances!
No she is not
After watching all this movies I do think that Rosamund Pike should have won.
You all need to back off. Moore's performance was incredible. I wish two actresses could have won, but Moore still thoroughly deserved this award
I feel like people saying rosamund pike should've won didn't watch Still Alice.
Or simply just don't understand what acting is.
@@NeverLetMeGo777 hmmm... Rosamund was amazing as Amy, you may not be into her but your comment doesn't even make sense.
@@jessica5497 Lol speak for yourself.
I watched both. Both women were brilliant but I think Pike was better and should’ve won. Moore should’ve won for “Far From Heaven” or “Boogie Nights.”
At last Julianne Moore won an Oscar: I'm so happy!!! ^_^
Matthew's "alright" at the beginning killed me. So iconic.
Finally uploaded!
For me the winner was Rosamound Pike. Julianne Moore did an amazing work in Still Alice though. I just think Amy Dunne is a really complex character and Rosamound was brilliant in that role. Obviusly the Oscar for Julianne is well deserved too. That was a really difficult decition.
She is so graceful and full of compassion. Such a beautiful woman on the inside and out.
do you know who was sitting behind Bart ? She seems very emotional, I was too when I learned Julianne won, she deserved it.
it looked like scarlett johannson but im not too sure (i noticed her as well, she looked so moved!)
kate kolman Nope def. didnt look like Scarlett at all lol.
This showed that Ruffalo and Moore are really good friends
I love the fact that Streep was so happy for her. They admire each other.
hei wai lam ahh, yeah my bad, i can see it now! i only looked really briefly the first time so i took a stab at it ahahah
I know these are old comments, but Mark himself said that his wife actually liked Moore when he worked with her and trusted her because he said she didn't trust most of his female co stars and afraid they would probably come onto him..
She deserved! Great, wonderful! from Brazil
No, she didn't.
Why?
+Lu Max Because two of her fellow nominees had better performances.
I agree! But she deserves too! A great job
+Lu Max She should have won in 1998 for Boogie Nights and in 2003 for Far From Heaven.
She is soooo amazing!!!! I love Julianne Moore, she gave such an astounding performance in Still Alice. And I think it was a most deserved Oscar!!
I HATE HER
Vicky 12 Rosumend pike was better and here's why:
Better acting not just her character but also her personality, better physical movement, more transformation, through out the film, more scene's where people were rooting for her. Overall a Better performance than Julianna Moore.
I don't agree with julianna moore not winning for boogie nights, Kim Basinger was average compared to her.
Thank you!
***** IT was just a opinion, You don't have to get all hostile about it.
She totally deserved Oscars for Boogie Nights, and Far From Heaven.
No, she didn't
This has to be the most adorable speech ever! xD
I love how happy she is when she gets up there. She must have dreamed of that moment for years. Great actress, well-deserved, with Pike being the second best.
She totally deserves the award. I always like her, not only she is a brilliant actress but also a very fine and kind lady.
She is such a great actress, and in my mind this was the only choice and she was LONG overdue. Congratulations to her.
I loved that the orchestra played "If I Had a Boat" on her way up to the stage.
Rosamund Pike should've won. she was phenomenal in Gone Girl.
No.
Yes
I don't think ive ever been more happier for an actress to win an award in this category my mother has Alzheimer's and was diagnosed at 54 its such a cruel disease and the way julianne moore played the role of someone living with this awful condition couldn't have been more accurate what a peformance she truly deserved that oscar and all the recognition in the world
I've been a fan of hers since The Lost World, so I was so happy that she won.
She already should be have two oscars for leading role : SAFE and FAR FROM HEAVEN
She was phenomenal in The Hours as well. I wish they could've awarded all three leading actresses an Oscar that year. Nicole Kidman won it, but Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore were sensational too👏❤
At first I felt her win was underwhelming, but when I saw the movie, I was like wow. Now I know
I love how Meryl tilted her head smiling like: "You go girl"
I knew someday she would win. So well deserved her acceptance speech was phenomenal. I love you Julie
Is it just me or does Meryl Streep sit at the same spot every bloody year?
She’s probably the only one in the industry who has an assigned seat.
She has been nominated every year since
the civil war, maybe that's the reason😊
0:59, 1:05, and 1:12
Julianne, Rosamund, and Reese's husbands all look more excited/nervous than their spouses. How adorable.
I was rooting for Felicity Jones, but it's been a longtime coming for Julianne Moore and she did deserve it
so utterly well-deserved. the movie made me ugly cry for like 5 whole minutes when it was done. i can't even explain what came over me, but it was cathartic. also, julianne moore seems like such a genuinely wonderful person. happy for her.
alec baldwin's wives won it back to back
strongwise Good observation.
Andrew Jonathan What's MVP?
Andrew Jonathan oh right.
yes n he played husbands at two extreme ends of a spectrum in both films.....
strongwise Here's another observation: Alec Baldwin appeared in 2 films with Cate Blanchett The Aviator & Blue Jasmine: She won an Oscar for both movies.
I'm so glad she finally got it. She's amazingly sweet and at the same time passionate about her work and it's not like the other nominees were way ahead of her.
I thought Rosamond pike deserved it , but I am sooooo happy for Julianne , she is amazing , ❤️❤️❤️
Wow she's so graceful, loved her speech!!
so humble. i love it. well deserved award
NO
The minute he called her name, I nearly jumped out of my seat. Some great performances that year, but she definitely earned that award.
Rosamund Pike was the best!
It's so lovely how her husband is more or equally excited as she is. She did a tremendous job in Still Alice. The 5 nominees did an outstanding job.
I am extremely happy for her. I've waited so long for this moment. She totally deserved that Oscar. She is an exceptionally talented actress. She's a kind and caring person, lovely and very nice. I don't care what others say about her win. I love her.
Felicity’s performance is one of my favorites in recent years. I’m so glad she was at least nominated!
my gosh i love Julianne Moore always .....even i was young ....she is beautifull
She seems like such a sincerely nice person
Rosamund Pike was robbed. Amazing Amy is the best performance of the year.
Juan Perez agreed!
I just watched this movie Just Alice, and it made me cry. What a magnificent performance!
God Julianne's smile could light up a room. It's so big and beaming. She's so wonderful.
The most deserved best actress Oscar of that decade.
Rosamund pike was a way better option
Julianne nominated again for oscars after 12 years ago. In 2003 she got double nomination for the hours and for far from heaven!!!
