- From our 6th Season of Paramount Television’s hit TV series, “SOLID GOLD“: enjoy our host, Dionne Warwick, introducing a live performance of Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warrnes singing “UP WHERE WE BELONG” from the movie “An Officer and a Gentleman". This was featured in our “SOLID GOLD SALUTES THE MOVIES (PT. 1)” special that aired on November 2, 1985.
This recording was arranged and produced by myself (Solid Gold's musical director and theme composer, Michael Miller - aka "Mickle").

My favorite song back then. I grew up listening to this song with my mom.
That is a beautiful live version of "Up Where We Belong" by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes that originates from the "An Officer and a Gentleman" movie soundtrack. The arrangement has recording studio quality written all over it, which is superb for television studio acoustics with a live studio audience included. It is a classic 1983 song that played well in this 1985 rendition and in 2024 as well, as good music knows no time limits and keeps playing well.
Thank you, Michael, for this upload that evokes thoughts and feelings of that early to mid-1980s era while staying firmly rooted in the awareness of it being a 2024 presentation through RUclips.

Thank you, kind sir. When we recorded this backing track of my arrangement with my Solid Gold Band at A&M Studios, both Joe and Jennifer were present, as I wanted to be sure they would be familiar with some of the subtle timing differences I made. And then after they sang live on-camera at Paramount Studios to our backing track, they both came into the booth to express their gratitude for how well everything went. It is definitely a wonderful Solid Gold memory for me!
@@bigeyezzzzzzzYou are very welcome for that, Michael. The music was pitch perfect. I do have a further question about the performance. I do recall, I believe, that on a February 1983 "Solid Gold" episode, then-co-host Marilyn McCoo and guest artist Tom Jones had performed "Up Where We Belong" as a duet and that was when "Solid Gold" still taped at the KTLA-TV studios. I wonder how the differences between the acoustics there compared to Paramount Studios, where "Solid Gold" relocated to in 1984, along with the 1985-1986 season being the first for "Solid Gold" to be in stereo sound as opposed to monoaural sound, made for any changes in how the performances were done in preparation pre-show , during the show episode, and in post production, comparing and contrasting the 1983 Marilyn McCoo and Tom Jones performance and the 1985 performance by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes, the original artists of the song. Both were definitely memorable performances as your arrangements were very precise as to be customized for each performance in a way that gave a smooth flow and feel to the songs performed.

I read somewhere that these two agreed to never lip sync the song and you can definitely tell the vocals are live here.
@@bigeyezzzzzzzThank you for that answer. I completely understand that you had thousands of musical arrangements over the many years that "Solid Gold" had been on the air. That which is certain as well is that both the 1983 Marilyn McCoo-Tom Jones and the 1985 Jennifer Warnes-Joe Cocker versions were fine examples of the cohesive nature of "Solid Gold" performances and their excellence as part of your many musical arrangements that helped form a unique foundation for the series when it had originally been on the air and so many years later in 2024.
