Dionne Warwick often gets overlooked when compared to many of her contemporaries - Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, Patti Labelle, etc. Unlike these ladies (who are all remarkable), Dionne was never a soul belter but rather an interpreter who uses finesse and subtlety to convey the meaning of the lyrics
Classy and always elegant, her style is easily recognisable and a pleasure to sit back and listen too. She's a storyteller in her approach to singing and the end result is timeless.

    • @nycp1969
      @nycp1969 3 года назад +35

I think she's overlooked compared to those others because although she took a soulful approach to her music, it wasn't R&B at all. She was a sophisticated MOR balladeer for the most part. Really, a singer like Diana Ross has a catalog with more soulful music than Dionne. Dionne's strong start with the original, yet not at all soulful sound of Burt Bacharach set her on a long path of a unique sound and approach to music. I love her phrasing and articulation. I love the way she weaves her musical stories.

    • @shawnjones4527
      @shawnjones4527 4 года назад +24

If you think an artist of her caliber is underrated, I suggest you look up the definition of underrated because that's not a word that has ever been used to describe this iconic legend. In the last few years, I've noticed how many people use the word "Underrated" to describe an artist that they feel doesn't get the recognition that they deserve. However, in majority of the cases that I've come across, the artist isn't underrated, so I suggest those that are making such claims, do more research, especially for those that are too young to remember the impact the artist has made. Just to give you an example of her accomplishments, I took the liberty of providing you with this excerpt:
Warwick ranks among the 40 biggest hit makers of the entire rock era (1955-1999), based on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Singles Charts. She is one of the most-charted female vocalists of all time, with 56 of her singles making the Billboard Hot 100 between 1962 and 1998, and 80 singles making all Billboardcharts combined.

She got really lucky as smoking usually ruins the voice like it did with Whitney. (With all due respect. It wasn't the drugs, but in fact the smoking, among other things) Dionne's voice on the other hand endured over 30 years staying nearly intact well into the late nineties.

Whitneys voice declined to smoking cigarettes and also the fact that she toured consistently for 15 years, did movies and soundtracks and singing when she should have been resting. Even Clive Davis said it wasn't that caused the damage he said it was cigarettes. Whitney never said she free based so I don't know where you got that from. She sure did have it going on. Her glam game was on point! But smokin' them dam cigarettes (cancer sticks) will make a voice as well as health deteriorate.

Perhaps it was the big production of most of her hits, or what, but I've never heard Dionne sing like this! Those big sustained belts, those transitions, the vocal effects/mic tricks. Wow, what a vocal diva here! My new favorite interpretation of this song, she brought out the soulful jazzy side to the song. And that emotion!!!

My favorite version...hands down! Her voice is the instrument and her style complimented the orchestra. Loved the way this version filled in all musical spaces perfectly. The phrasing is flawless. Stevie's is an awesome second and I'd have to say Nancy Wilson and Barbra Streisand is tied for third.

    All is fair in love
    Love's a crazy game
    Two people vow to stay
In love as one they say
But all has changed with time
    The future none can see
    The road you leave behind
    Ahead lies mystery
But all is fair in love
    I had to go away
    A writer takes his pen
    To write the words again
That all in love is fair
    All of fate's a chance
    It's either good or bad
I tossed my coin to say
In love with me you'd stay
But all in war is so cold
    You either win or lose
    When all is put away
    The losing side I'll play
But all is fair in love
I should have never left your side
    A writer takes his pen
    To write the words again
That all in love is fair
    A writer takes his pen
    To write the words again
That all in love is fair

At her peak, she was a master vocalist - phrasing, touch, power, tone, dexterity (e.g., Promises,Promises). But almost as often as she recorded some of the greatest songs and made them hers, she wasn't always selecting the best songs consistently. I have several of her albums, and along with the great songs, there's also often a lot of filler. But at her best, she's astonishing. No one like her.

Dionne Warwick is an artist - not a singer, star, celebutant or gossip subject. Compare her with 99% of those heard on radio today and you want to weep at the mediocrity. Female singers "talk" though songs in a 5-note range. It's like evolution in reverse. Incredible arrangement by Alan Peters - perfect for Warwick's unique voice.

I only discovered this recently and I keep playing it over and over. Dionne in her prime was simply the best. I love listening and watching her sing when she moves the microphone away when she sings those sustained notes. The orchestra sounds fabulous as well. PERFECTION!
