She made history on that evening. This performance is part of her legacy, no one will ever be able to take that away from her. I am completely addicted to this rendition.
Dionne Warwick often gets overlooked when compared to many of her contemporaries - Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, Patti Labelle, etc. Unlike these ladies (who are all remarkable), Dionne was never a soul belter but rather an interpreter who uses finesse and subtlety to convey the meaning of the lyrics Classy and always elegant, her style is easily recognisable and a pleasure to sit back and listen too. She's a storyteller in her approach to singing and the end result is timeless.
I think she's overlooked compared to those others because although she took a soulful approach to her music, it wasn't R&B at all. She was a sophisticated MOR balladeer for the most part. Really, a singer like Diana Ross has a catalog with more soulful music than Dionne. Dionne's strong start with the original, yet not at all soulful sound of Burt Bacharach set her on a long path of a unique sound and approach to music. I love her phrasing and articulation. I love the way she weaves her musical stories.

If you think an artist of her caliber is underrated, I suggest you look up the definition of underrated because that's not a word that has ever been used to describe this iconic legend. In the last few years, I've noticed how many people use the word "Underrated" to describe an artist that they feel doesn't get the recognition that they deserve. However, in majority of the cases that I've come across, the artist isn't underrated, so I suggest those that are making such claims, do more research, especially for those that are too young to remember the impact the artist has made. Just to give you an example of her accomplishments, I took the liberty of providing you with this excerpt: Warwick ranks among the 40 biggest hit makers of the entire rock era (1955-1999), based on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Singles Charts. She is one of the most-charted female vocalists of all time, with 56 of her singles making the Billboard Hot 100 between 1962 and 1998, and 80 singles making all Billboardcharts combined.
whats amazes me so much about her is how she starts off so low and mellow and then goes soaring towards the middle of the song and makes it look so effortless....fantastic
I'm a huge Whitney Houston fan and I liked Dionne but I didn't know much of her before "That's What Friends Are For" and I'm astonished I see so many little things Whitney picked up and crafted her style from. I have been listening to Dionne going through her catalog and I am getting a gift of her past. The great Dionne Warwick!!! What a beautiful vocal instrument . . . clean, smooth, clear, in spite of all the cigarette smoking she did, I still love Dionne, what a 'master' performer!
She got really lucky as smoking usually ruins the voice like it did with Whitney. (With all due respect. It wasn't the drugs, but in fact the smoking, among other things) Dionne's voice on the other hand endured over 30 years staying nearly intact well into the late nineties.
I strongly disagree, she definitely lost the range, due to smoking, don't kid yourself. This performance was in 1975. I love Dionne's voice but she couldn't even sing like this in 1986, with "That's what friends are for".
@lsaturn01 Whitney did not have bad technique what the hell are you talking about?! Whitneys voice declined to smoking cigarettes and also the fact that she toured consistently for 15 years, did movies and soundtracks and singing when she should have been resting. Even Clive Davis said it wasn't that caused the damage he said it was cigarettes. Whitney never said she free based so I don't know where you got that from. There are plenty of vocalist who snort coke and keep their voice
@lsaturn01 You just edited your comment, you're not slick. While your editing your comment go ahead and delete she freebased cocaine because Whitney never said she freebased nor did anyone around her say she did. Cigarettes and over touring is what killed her vocals. Her touring schedule was abuse

Dionne Warwick is an artist - not a singer, star, celebutant or gossip subject. Compare her with 99% of those heard on radio today and you want to weep at the mediocrity. Female singers "talk" though songs in a 5-note range. It's like evolution in reverse. Incredible arrangement by Alan Peters - perfect for Warwick's unique voice.
I have always enjoyed how she plays the keys with her left hand as if each finger sent forth a note.
Only Dionne Warwick could make this song her own. Dionne improvises lyrics like few others. She also frequently pays homage to Stevie as one of her favorite song writer. An amazing performance of this song.
I love Nancy Wilson's version.as well..Vocal extraordinaire!!
I only discovered this recently and I keep playing it over and over. Dionne in her prime was simply the best. I love listening and watching her sing when she moves the microphone away when she sings those sustained notes. The orchestra sounds fabulous as well. PERFECTION!
