Jennifer Warnes was the Queen of the Soundtracks back in the late '70s and the '80s. She sang "It Goes Like It Goes," the theme song to NORMA RAE, which won the Oscar for best original song at the 1979 Academy Awards. She took home a Grammy in 1983 for "Up Where We Belong" and then another in 1987 for "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" from DIRTY DANCING.
You have to see the movie “An Officer and a Gentleman” with Richard Gere, Louis Gossett (win the academy award for his role as the drill sergeant) and Deborah Winger. One of the best movies you’ll see about the military, kind of like the sergeant story
This song won songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie an Oscar for best original song in 1983. She's the only member of the Cree tribe to win an academy award. She was on the cast of Sesame Street for five seasons from 1975 to 1980.
This song was written by Buffy Saint-Marie, a phenomenal musician, songwriter, and person. Buffy is still out there, singing and writing. Huge catalog behind her. Check her out!
This song makes me cry every time I hear it. It is 100% pure and raw beauty. This is the song to listen to you when you are at a low point in your life. It'll always bring you back up.
Jennifer Warnes is one of the most underrated singers in music. Her solo songs include I Know a Heartache When I See One , The Right Time of the Night and a fantastic cover of First We Take Manhattan that features a guitar solo by Stevie Ray Vaughn.
If you angels only knew how you lift me up. And then there is Joe Cocker, with his gritty voice and Jennifer Warnes with her angelic voice... I've come to know that it's not about the quality of the voice, it's the passion.
Now that you’ve heard this huge 1982 hit, you have to see the movie AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN! It’s really a good story with strong performances by Richard Gere, Debra Winger, and Louis Gossett, Jr., who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film. This song also won the Oscar for Best Song the same year! Since it was co-written by Buffy Sainte Marie, she became the very first Indigenous person to win an Oscar!

An Officer and a Gentleman was filmed in my hometown in Washington. The paper mill in the movie was where my grandfather retired from back in the day and yes that mill stunk lol. That movie brings back so many memories as was in high school then. oh, the good old days.
Another beautiful duet from the 80's is 'Somewhere Out There' by Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram. It was the theme song to the movie ' An American Tail'.
This song is so beautiful, it's almost spiritual. I was raised in the Assemblies of God church, and they are so strict on music and stuff. But my pastor was so moved by this song, he played it during a Sunday Morning service at the time this song was popular. He just stood there at the pulpit taking it in with us. Absolutely Joe cocker is amazing unique vocalist. The song embodies what people mean to each other. And definitely you do have to watch officer and a gentleman. Fabulous film.
This song always makes me think of my parents who were married for 32 years before my dad passed away in 1991. My mom joined him in 2015. I know they're up in heaven dancing to this song.
Now you have got to watch An Officer and a Gentleman on movie night. The final scene works so well because of this song and collaboration. This is my favorite song from one of my favorite movies. Played this song at my wedding instead of the wedding march. The lyrics, voices and instruments just speak for themselves, so beautiful. I highly recommend the movie An Officer and a Gentlemen, so good.
J and Amber both will like the movie, An Officer and a Gentleman. Wish you did one of the versions of this showing them singing together onstage...great how they worked together!
I absolutely LOVED this song when I was a little kid. I'm a sucker for a good duet, and for some reason I've always been drawn to Joe Cocker's voice and sound. Even from a very young age, I knew there was something amazing about his style 😍
No matter how many times I listen to this, I always hear the first line of the chorus as "The lift goes up where we belong" - 'lift' is what we in Australia (and the UK) call an elevator.
This song was SO HUGE when it was out. As far as Jennifer Warnes, I'd definitely recommend "The Right Time Of The Night." That was a pretty big hit for her.
Not only is Jennifer Warnes a wonderful, underrated, singer/songwriter, she is a master of knowing when to pull back to let her duet partner shine. She does it here and she does it again on the The Time of My Life with Bill Medley (who only agreed to sing the song because he'd heard that Jennifer Warnes would be singing with him). Her solo career deserves a turn on Female Friday.
Jennifer Warnes is indeed an accomplished songwriter best known for collaborating with Leonard Cohen on at least eight of his albums. Her first movie soundtrack was Norma Rae, starring Sally Field and Beau Bridges. She won the Oscar for best original song in 1979. This tune was written by Buffy Sainte-Marie, who won the Oscar in the same category in 1983.
I was 14 years old when this song was released. It's certainly stood the test of time. My favorite duet is a hidden gem that not a lot of people have probably heard. In 1994 an album called Rhythm, Country and Blues was released. It contained duets by R&B/Blues artist with Country artists. My favorite song on that album is my all time favorite duet. It's "When Something is Wrong with My Baby," sung by Patti LaBelle and Travis Tritt. Y'all should definitely check it out, though you can only find audio only versions on RUclips. Ah... the 80's ballads, growing up in that range has definitely put a bias in me, but I do love them. Though one thing about this one in particular, while most male/female duets tend to favor the female vocals, this one has Joe fully up front.
