Jennifer Warnes was the Queen of the Soundtracks back in the late '70s and the '80s. She sang "It Goes Like It Goes," the theme song to NORMA RAE, which won the Oscar for best original song at the 1979 Academy Awards. She took home a Grammy in 1983 for "Up Where We Belong" and then another in 1987 for "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" from DIRTY DANCING.

Your discussion of how Jennifer brings purity and delicateness to Joe's gruffness is spot on. Here's what Jennifer herself had to say: "I always thought the pairing had a strong ring of truth to it. It was so unlikely, because Joe has this well-known, very raw, masculine energy. I was less well known and had this very vulnerable, quintessential female energy and we were very polarized, as men and women often are these days. But we met in the middle." She is a terrifically underrated and versatile singer, able to sing with an ethereal sweetness (in the verses) but also with strength and power (in the choruses). She always serves the song and never oversings, which is essential when singing with someone as emotive as Joe Cocker.

If this isn't a cue to watch "An Officer And a Gentleman", I don't know what is. I'm not sure you've reacted to a Richard Gere movie, but either this or "Pretty Woman" needs to be the first. It's a great movie, and Louis Gossett Jr. won an Oscar for his role. I don't know much about Jennifer, but she had a hand in two of the biggest movie songs to come out of the 80s, the other being "I've Had the Time of My LIfe" from Dirty Dancing. As for Joe... well, what can you say about Joe? If I had to nominate your next song of his, it'd be "The Letter". The piano is FIRE!

Now you have to react, on your movie channel , to “An Officer and A Gentleman” with Richard Gere. This song is from that 80’s movie😉 👍

This was a major song for the movie. "An Officer And A Gentleman" from 40 years ago.
Do review this movie when you get a chance... Richard Gere, Lou Gossett (won the oscar for his role) and Debra Winger. If you liked Top Gun, this is about getting through the training just to be in the Navy before moving on to flight training.

You just did one of the all time great duet love songs. I remember listening to this song on the radio when it came out and everyone would stop and remark how it was one of their favorite songs because it was so good. Great choice.

Jennifer Warnes was successful in the late 70s into the 80s. Right time of the night was a big hit in ,1977 and her duet with Bill Medley from the movie Dirty dancing, I had the time of my life

This song is so beautiful, it's almost spiritual. I was raised in the Assemblies of God church, and they are so strict on music and stuff. But my pastor was so moved by this song, he played it during a Sunday Morning service at the time this song was popular. He just stood there at the pulpit taking it in with us. I was like 13, and I loved rock and popular music, so I had already heard it. I can't ever remember him playing a secular song ever, with this one exception. He said he felt like The Lord moved on his spirit to play it for the congregation. I don't know why, but I cried tears during that service while the song was playing. 💖 Excellent reaction.

The woman who wrote this song doesn't publicly claim to be a member of any church, but she has expressed agreement with many beliefs of the Baha'i faith.

No matter how many times I listen to this, I always hear the first line of the chorus as "The lift goes up where we belong" - 'lift' is what we in Australia (and the UK) call an elevator.

I was 14 years old when this song was released. It's certainly stood the test of time. My favorite duet is a hidden gem that not a lot of people have probably heard. In 1994 an album called Rhythm, Country and Blues was released. It contained duets by R&B/Blues artist with Country artists. My favorite song on that album is my all time favorite duet. It's "When Something is Wrong with My Baby," sung by Patti LaBelle and Travis Tritt. Y'all should definitely check it out, though you can only find audio only versions on RUclips. To the best of my knowledge they never sang it live together, which is a crying shame!!

Not only is Jennifer Warnes a wonderful, underrated, singer/songwriter, she is a master of knowing when to pull back to let her duet partner shine. She does it here and she does it again on the The Time of My Life with Bill Medley (who only agreed to sing the song because he'd heard that Jennifer Warnes would be singing with him). Her solo career deserves a turn on Female Friday.

Jennifer Warnes is indeed an accomplished songwriter best known for collaborating with Leonard Cohen on at least eight of his albums. Her first movie soundtrack was Norma Rae, starring Sally Field and Beau Bridges. She won the Oscar for best original song in 1979. This tune was written by Buffy Sainte-Marie, who won the Oscar in the same category in 1983.
