"Merely rumors"? No, it wasn't merely rumors at the time. Irish kids were talking about being abused but the police, bishops and often their parents were not doing anything about it.
Written by Prince this song was everywhere in 1990. Sinead is a talented artist who lost her career for expressing her political beliefs on national tv. I truly miss her presence in the music landscape. The tear shed in this video was not contrived. As she sang, the emotions of her mother death i think it was hit her like a ton of bricks
she's still performing and giving interviews so she didn't lose her career.. and she tore up the Pope's picture on SNL and told everyone that the pope was a criminal and the catholic church were abusing children.. she told us to wake up. And still... people keep telling this big fat herd of people the truth about their society but they just won't listen.. so the misery and predatory economics continues.
Its really tragic what happened to her after tearing the popes picture on SNL. I think i saw her on Dr Phil. She basically had a nervous breakdown, homeless and penniless. A shame because she was so talented. Very sad. 😥✌❤

I'm broken 💔 I just found out about five minutes ago that Sinead O'Connor has passed away at the age of 56yrs. This song specifically has such a special meaning to me & it always will! May she R.I.P. 🕊️
An Irish born artist with a celtic overtone to her vocals. Brave warrior spirit who stood up for what she believes to be right cost her earlier in her career!
Her diagnosed borderline personality disorder and agoraphobia, along with her toxic personality, has ruined her personal and business associations throughout her life. You can't be a pop star - or any other type of star - when both your public and private persona is hateful. Her incredibly nasty personality is well demonstrated with this Twitter post made in Nov. of 2018: "But truly I never wanna spend time with white people again (if that's what non-muslims are called). Not for one moment, for any reason. They are disgusting." Great talent with a lot of problems.
She didn’t stand up for what she believed was right, she stood up for what WAS right, but unfortunately for her, she was over a decade ahead of her time, and human beings did what human beings do when they hear things that make them uncomfortable.
@@Whistler4u There are actually a couple of videos here on RUclips where Prince does the song solo. One is a rehearsal video with The Revolution at Paisley Park. I love Sinead's version but I have to say, after I heard Prince do it alone, I prefer his. The duet was I think back with The Family which was a group that Prince was heavily involved in do to the female lead singer who was Wendy Melvoin's sister, Susannah. He was romantically involved with Susannah and that was how he met Wendy and she became a part of The Revolution.
@@deborahdoesscrap Studio version is a duet and live he did it mostly as a duet with Shelby. But you're right, he also did it solo but more as a love song than the sad feel Sinead gave it.
@@eddiet3026 That’s fabulous. Congratulations. But the entire world showed their love for her version and it sold millions and millions and millions of copies.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions but this song cannot even come close to some of his sensual ballads like Do me Baby, Scandalous or Insatiable.
Yes. But, I think Sinead sang it the best. Then Chris. Not a big fan of Prince's version of it. I'm a big fan of his lyrics and most of his performances. But not this performance.
Sinead is Irish, and is a hugely important artist. Still successful, but not in USA. Try "No Mans Woman" or "Reason With Me", or "Eight Good Reasons" to give you an idea of what she does.
Yes, maybe, but she's too self orientated to be really effective and is just, ultimately embarrassing, as she does not write the songs she sings but tries to make them about her. Sorry, I don't like this lady, never did because she's such a whiner and other Women need better than this as a support. Been waiting a long time to call this selfish woman out, so there it is!
@Anne - Troy, Fire on Babylon, Three Babies, etc. Sinead writes her own songs. Her debut album “Lion and the Cobra” reached widespread critical acclaim and was arguably best album of the year. This was before she transformed Prince’s song into a masterpiece. Yes, she has done her own arrangements for and covered a handful of songs by other artists. Something many legendary singers and bands do and have always done. She has been specifically requested by iconic rock bands and composers to do them the honor of performing live renditions of their songs. Yet she has written or co-written the majority of her music.
It’s an amazing performance of a Prince original. It works so well because the camera is close up on her face and you can see she’s clearly genuinely missing someone (in this case her mother). When the tears roll down her cheeks it makes me want to reach out and give her a hug every time.
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 I'm specifically referring to the internet version of this video which has millions of views, as that's the way so many are even familiar with it, not from original TV broadcasts. I recall when it was first aired and it was so different to the vast majority of music videos. I installed one of the first video jukeboxes in a hotel bar, and for many younger patrons, it was the first time they had seen a number of the videos.
You know Sinéad passed away yesterday, All tv and radio stations in her home country of Ireland, and also in and the UK have covered no other news. She has released ten albums. Many European and US channels are reporting about her passing. This song was written by Prince. R.I.P. Sinéad.

I saw Sinead right before lockdown, for the second time. I’m shocked you’ve never heard of her. Her voice is just as amazing live. She’s had a very difficult life, and lost her son recently. I hope she finds solace in her life like we do in her music.

I am so sad about the loss of Sinead O'Connor! Glad I've got some company tonight. I played this beautiful song whenever it just didn't work out. Thank you and rest in peace, Ms. O'Connor
Sinead is a kind of "folk hero"in Ireland, for speaking the truth about the abusive catholic church. Could have been HUGE in the States, but her protest on TV put paid to that.
Is that also the case after she converted to Islam and tweeted: "What I'm about to say is something so racist I never thought my soul could ever feel it. But truly I never wanna spend time with white people again (if that's what non-muslims are called). Not for one moment, for any reason. They are disgusting." ??? @@elliotthedissident6077 Yeah she seems to have some issues with her craving for a religious meaning with life (she was ordained as a catholic priest by an independent catholic organisation) amd called herself christian and a believer in Jesus before eventually converting to Islam. It's especially funny how she had harsh words to say about the catholic church in the past yet doesn't comment on the disgusting practices of Islam (or atleast Sharia law) that takes place in some countries and communities.
She's an artist with her demons to wrestle with, but a fundamentally good & beautiful soul. For those who haven't seen it, here's the SNL performance in which she calls out the Catholic Church or covering up child sexual abuse. My respect for this courageous act will never diminish. ruclips.net/video/X0VpfiMcPPA/видео.html
She was on a rocket because of her unbelievable voice. Then the next I see, she’s the musical guest on SNL, and she holds up a photograph of the Pope, calls him the “enemy” and tears the photograph in half on live tv. People, NBC Network and others LOST their damn minds. She was never heard from again as far as I know. She did have rumors/gossip about her emotional health. But, her voice is undeniable. Superb.
When you tell the truth on national TV, you're gone. She was exposing the hypocrisy of the churches abuses of children before the massive amounts of the cover ups were known- all the way up to the pope.
I think she was the first, or one of the firsts, who brought Catholic priests' child sex abuse. If she did the tearing up the pope pic today it wouldn't even be a first page story. But she didn't care about anything but getting out that message. And..... it ruined her. She was Me Too 2 decades before it's existence.
Just for comparison Chris Cornell covered this acousticly and while both versions are haunting in their own ways both are uniquely beautiful. Prince was a musical genius 💜
Here in the UK that song is one of the only songs that can get a grown man of my generation to shed a manly tear. So emotional and has true meaning to the words that everyone can relate to. Sinéad O'Connor was a voice to be heard in song and in life. When she tried to speak about the truth behind the abuse in the Catholic faith she lost everything. It's truly a shame.
If you watch any of her interviews her and her siblings were horribly, horribly abused by their mom. Very sad story. This song... probably one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
This video won video of the year when it came out. Prince wrote the song but let Sinead perform it. He said, the song belongs to Sinead now! She is from Ireland. Her voice and vocals are so powerful!
Prince didn't let her perform it, he knew nothing about it until it was released and he was really angry about it because she wasn't one of his stable of artists and then tried to beat her up at a meeting at his house.
Sinade didn't write this song, Prince did, and it sent her into the music stratosphere when this came out. Sadly, Sinaed had a very difficult childhood when it came to her mother (who I think was mentally challenged), but she was thinking of her when she sang this song. After this song became a big hit, she was asked to host Saturday Night Live (and this is when she tore a picture of the Pope up in front of everyone) which didn't go over well, it affected the rest of her career. Her point, the church is full of BS, and they didn't protect the children. Tragic that she has suffered with these demons all her life. She's Irish
This song did make her a one-hit-wonder, unfortunately she was not stable enough to hang on to it. At the time she blamed the Catholic church for many of her problems. She later was ordained as a priest and then converted to Islam. Obviously a troubled soul.
@Steve - Granted, this was clearly her biggest hit but she wasn’t exactly a one hit wonder. She was already a successful artist prior. Her debut album “ Lion and the Cobra “ reached widespread critical acclaim and was hailed by some as best album of the year. Through the 80’s and 90’s her music videos played constantly. At least a couple dozen songs on rotation. Including one written for an Academy Award winning film. Famous composers were requesting her to perform their songs live. Also, she wasn’t blaming the Catholic Church for her problems. She was protesting against the silence of nations who were covering up the crimes of child abuse within the church. Something that was very much justified.
Ireland knew all about the church sex scandal because they were victims in it and the church had taken out an insurance policy to cover the lawsuits claims and it made the news. the US knew nothing about it, and without the internet, or a proper explanation from Sinead when she did it, that narrative was that it was just her hating on Catholics (she was one herself) and the pope.
Hi from Ireland 🇮🇪 I remember the first time I heard it I was 9 years old 1989 with my dad who’s passed too very emotional for the Irish people rest in peace Sinead we loved you then we love you still 😢❤ ❤❤
She’s an attention seeking child. I don’t discredit her musical talent in the slightest, but her “fights” seemed more like tantrums and trying to be edgy than standing up and fixing problems. There’s an emptiness in that girl that she tries to fill with paltry attempts at social justice. She attacked Catholicism and then became an ordained priest. Prince wrote this song that skyrocketed her career and she made false claims about him being abusive to her and practicing devil worship. Last I heard she was wrapping herself in Islam and decrying whites as disgusting and vowing to stay away from them. I suppose she’ll have to ban mirrors then. 🤷🏻♀️

She is from Ireland, and went throught realLy difficult times after she publicly tore a photo of pope in a protest against the silence of the Catholic church on the children abuses. Very underated artist.
Yes, props to Prince for writing the sing and to Sinbad for singing it. Just like the song written by Dolly Parton, but sang by Whitney Houston, another example is Tennessee Whiskey sang by Chris Stapleton and written by someone else. I know there are many other examples.
Prince wrote it, but he didn't record it. He wrote it for a group that he put together called The Family. The group was a flop. So yes, this cover is the definitive version, but the original was a flop.
Her voice is pure silk! Prince actually wrote this song, but I can’t imagine anyone singing this song but Sinead. She’s from Ireland, by the way, and unfortunately has recently passed away (a few days ago). So very sad! 😢

@@debbiemccain5850 well, when It came out, it was a huge hit, and in the beginning I didn‘t know that it was composed by Prince. I just read in Wikipedia, that it was composed 1985 by Prince for a Project called „The Family“ and was unrecognised until Sinead had this huge success in 1990. So in a way maybe we are both wrong or both right…
I literally fell for Sinead the very first time I saw this performance. Her voice is obviously incredible, the emotion in the song is utterly palpable, but that actual performance, the incredible acting in her face and eyes, just broke my heart and made it hers.
As everyone else has said it's a Prince song. The video was filmed in one take and those are real tears rolling down her cheek. Much love from England 🏴
She's Irish. We have some more great singers and bands here as well here in Ireland. Bans such as The Corrs, B witched, U2, Boyzone, Westlife, Riverdance, The Cranberries, and such such more great bands.
Sinead's voice can cut and heal in the same song, the pathos in her tune "To Mother You" & the anguish in "Fire On Babylon" make them opposite ends of the emotions that are real for her. A beautiful soul still on the process of healing.
There is more than just her vocal range, but the range of her emotions being projected. Ranging from nearly braking down and weeping to anger to the warm happy remembrance of what once was.
She recorded this video just after her mother's passing. The emotion you hear, and see in her eyes is real intense pain and pure sadness/emotion. I've even read she had a difficult relationship with her "abusive" mother. And then to get canceled for speaking truth on abuse in the Catholic Church years before it was out. Society owes her an apology.
Should try Dido’s “White Flag” and Lisa Stansfield “All Woman” even her and Barry White singing “All Around the World” for some fantastic female artist music
Sinéad is an Irish Gaelic name, that's why the pronunciation is different than what you would think in English. She is an amazing artist, her emotion is always so raw.
It is great to see you reacting to Sinéad O'Connor. Sinéad has done a lot of great songs, starting with her first album, The Lion and the Cobra, in 1987. An incredibly angry, wonderful album. I'd recommend trying a song or two from that album. If you want one of the most quietly rageful songs ever, try the song Troy. If you want something dancy, Mandinka is a great one. I Want Your (Hands On Me) is another great one. I love everything about that album. From the same album as the one you just listened to, Black Boys on Mopeds is a great one - a bit on the sad side, but still wonderful. The Emperor's New Clothes is another great one from the same album. She has done a variety of different musical styles, including a reggae album and an album of traditional Irish songs. Unfortunately, she has had a pretty hard life, dealing with abuse as well as a hard struggle with mental illness, which she has spoken quite publicly about to help destigamtize mental illness. Her musical work is well worth exploring.
I saw her live in the early 90's, I cried the whole time. Everything about her is just so beautiful. Other good songs by her are Mandinka and The Emperor's New Clothes.
I see now why everyone likes this version of this song. Vocals are perfect for it. My favorite song she sings is also a cover, that you two really need to check out is when she sang Pink Floyd's song Mother, at the Wall Live in Berlin concert...Her vocals give you goosebumps. Thanks. I do remember all the controversary that went on with her and when she shaved her hair..

She has one of the most powerful voices you will ever hear. She only recorded two albums before she ran into trouble for, of all things, tearing a picture of the Pope in half during a performance on Saturday Night Live. Seems quaint now, given the way protest is these days, but it really derailed her career. She was unapologetic and refused to compromise on her political stance and she paid the price. This was 30 years ago and would likely have not turned out today as it did then. We really were deprived of one of the signature voices in music. It didn’t get much air play, but check out anything from her first album The Lion and The Cobra. Jackie, Troy, Drink Before the War, Mandinka.
I think her disrespecting the Pope would still cause major problems with Ireland and Catholics in general. Catholicism is still a major component of Irish identity as opposed to Northern Ireland.
@@jaydeutscher She did it because JPII would not acknowledge the child sexual abuse issue with the clergy in Ireland. Right or wrong, one can imagine the rage such an issue would engender.
Unfortunately, Sinead’s willingness to be her own person and speak her mind basically got her “cancelled” in the early 90’s. She’s an amazing artist with a beautiful voice and soul. I’ve loved this song since it was released and it always invokes so much emotion.
It didn't get her cancelled. She continued to release albums throughout the 90s and 00s. Maybe the highly sensitive Americans found her antics distasteful, the rest of the world not so much. She was NOT a pop-singer but rather a protest singer. I dare say the comfortable people don't like to have alternative veiws presented to them. After Madonna had herself gowned, harnessed, strapped down and fully stripped to promote her album Erotica and her book Sex, O'Connor stole the spotlight with one photograph of a fully clothed man. But the other vilification that descended on O'Connor showed she had struck a nerve.
She was never cancelled, she went off the edge for a while, but no one who listend to her threw out albums when she tore up a pic of the pope, she wasnt popular with old grannies. Truth is, her own path took her away from her fan base, she went from singing rebel songs, singing songs like this, to all sorts like being muslim for a while and stuff.
1. She was never cancelled 2. Shame she's not "speaking her mind" on Islam after converting to Muslim whilst hilariously being lesbian 3. She's changed her name to susqat Patel or something
@@billdoor3140 So much wrong there. She was dropped by her record label after selling 7 million albums. By today's low standards that's giga-cancelled. She wasn't a lesbian (she had dabbled). You pronounced her name perfect it’s Irish. Prince wrote that but she made it a worldwide hit. She a beautiful human being
Written by Prince this song was everywhere in 1990.

You can see tears rolling down her face at the end.
She totally owns this song.
yes not many people onto that, that was her thinking about her mum who died, unplanned
Chris Cornell?
She didn't plan for tears they came naturally and they never cut it
An Irish born artist with a celtic overtone to her vocals.
They are disgusting."
Great talent with a lot of problems.
She criticized the Pope and got canceled, hard. Too bad. She is a talented and beautiful woman.
She didn’t stand up for what she believed was right, she stood up for what WAS right, but unfortunately for her, she was over a decade ahead of her time, and human beings did what human beings do when they hear things that make them uncomfortable.
as the Dixie Chicks
True. She called the Catholic Church out and still does.
As much as I love Prince, and I really do, I think her version kills it. Love this video. The closeup on her face is breathtaking.
Sinead OWNS this. PERIOD! And Prince was gracious enough to let her own it.
Prince really loved her version, too.
Prince's original is a duet and has a totally different feel. I prefer this one too.

Yes and definitely watch the official video for that song.
Sinead is Irish, and is a hugely important artist. Still successful, but not in USA. Try "No Mans Woman" or "Reason With Me", or "Eight Good Reasons" to give you an idea of what she does.
She sang backup for Peter Gabriel on the song Blood of Eden from his album us
Good choices hope this is picked up!
Well I dont knpe why...not in the US
Yes, maybe, but she's too self orientated to be really effective and is just, ultimately embarrassing, as she does not write the songs she sings but tries to make them about her.
If you like her, another group you should listen to is The Cranberries.
One of the best, most emotional songs in history. This song can give me goosebumps decades later.
Thank you Prince, and Sinead.
Hugely talented, but a very troubled person. This video is truly an internet classic.

Internet classic?! That is an oxymoron when it comes to music from this era lol.
No autotune, just pure talent.
You know Sinéad passed away yesterday, All tv and radio stations in her home country of Ireland, and also in and the UK have covered no other news. She has released ten albums. Many European and US channels are reporting about her passing. This song was written by Prince. R.I.P. Sinéad.

Yes, she was a very, very talented singer with a beautiful voice, but was a little out there and it hurt her.
@@lameduck3105 Indeed. Talented as hell but out of her gord.
She was one of the big targets of the Gores. Tipper Gore went after the music industry big time
She stayed popular in Europe I believe
She was protesting the church covering up sexual abuse of alter boys. She was right.
This voice! She broke everyone's heart with this song ( damn Prince!)...Just gorgeous.
Just for comparison Chris Cornell covered this acousticly and while both versions are haunting in their own ways both are uniquely beautiful. Prince was a musical genius 💜

RIP Sinead. This song will go down as one of the greats of the 90s. Emotions were real in this one.
Absolutely singular moment in music history. It’s that strong.
She was “cancelled” for tearing up the photo of the pope.

Respect everyone

Sinead’s voice is incredible but her “unique” singing style is distinctively Irish.
totally. I'm not Irish (kiwi) but i always thought that little flourish when she rolls the end of a phrase sounds Irish.
Now watch it again with your eyes open and really look at her face, see the tear roll down her cheek. She felt every word she sang.
100% she put everything into this song, she delivered a masterpiece.
Simply one of the best videos ever produced. Raw, minimal production. Alanis Morrisette sort of mimicked with “Head Over Feet”
The emotion put into the singing and video is incomparable to anything else ever produced

It is great to see you reacting to Sinéad O'Connor. Sinéad has done a lot of great songs, starting with her first album, The Lion and the Cobra, in 1987. An incredibly angry, wonderful album.

Sinead O'Connor is also a opera singer and she had a very sad childhood and I love this song even though it is sad.thank you for sharing Jay and Amber.
You guys are cracking me up. I’m enjoying the, “trying to figure it out in the moment stuff”, it’s funny and it’s real. Sinead O’Connor is so iconic and this song is so amazing. I really love how you guys approach the unknown with reverence. It’s a really great video. Thanks for the fun.
You like the piano you'll love Bruce Hornsby That's Just The Way It Is. The song Changes by Tupac is a variation of this song by Bruce Hornsby.
I used to love a song she sang called 'Mandinka' so that may be worth checking out :)
One of my favorites of hers.
Had an album of hers where she did marvelous cover's of '40's & 50's Standards, like "Black Coffee", "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered", "I've Got A Crush On You" - a wonderful record and a very talented performer!
@@goodowner5000 I bought that one, it was good. She did a great job on Loretta Lynn's "Success Has Made A Failure Of Our Home". I loved Sinead's "Sean Nos" album, traditional Irish music.
The crazy thing about Sinead is when she sings live. She is always 100% perfect. Spectacular natural voice.
I'd love to hear her live
@@JennAmazed Oh my goodness.. search Nothing Compares to You live in Chilli 1990
You should listen to mandinka and the emporers new clothes
Rest in peace Sinead 🙏🏻🌹🕊️🦋😢 nothing compares to you I love that song❤️ she died so young only 56 🍀beautiful Irish lady with a beautiful voice 🍀 she will be sorely missed died, 26/7/2023 god bless 🙏🏻😢💔
It's funny in a way that even though I've known almost every song you've reacted to but have forgotten about many of them until your reactions. Thank you. Keep it up as you two are great. Peace be with you.
The lion and The cobra, one of my favorites. Find myself singing along in the car all the time pretending I have a powerful singing voice like hers!
Remember The Dixie Chicks?? They spoke out against Bush and that was pretty much the last time we saw them too...
@@jaydeutscher Catholicism is still relevant to roughly 50% of the ppl in Northern Ireland. Or do you know something I don't?🇮🇪
her, prince and chris cornell all sing this song and all sound great.
Yep - Chris does it justice.
1. She was never cancelled
2. Shame she's not "speaking her mind" on Islam after converting to Muslim whilst hilariously being lesbian
3. She's changed her name to susqat Patel or something
@@billdoor3140
So much wrong there.
She was dropped by her record label after selling 7 million albums. By today's low standards that's giga-cancelled.
She wasn't a lesbian (she had dabbled).
She spoke out about homophobia in Islam even wearing a hijab and pride symbol at an event.
Sometimes it seems hateful people are allergic to google.
@ChrisWorth I'm sorry but wearing a hijab whilst being pro Lesbian is absolutely comical. It's like wearing a hijab whilst selling bacon sandwiches. She was an idiot. Criticised catholics cos of human rights...then ended up wearing a hijab whilst promoting LBGTQ...really??....
“Dreams” by The Cranberries is an excellent song.
It really is so so good
RIP Dolores :(
