I'm going to try making a memory quilt for my mom This is my first time quilting. My dad passed 😢 in July. I know this will be a difficult holiday time. For her and I want to make something special. Your video has inspired me. I want to use his dress shirts, jeans, and polo shirts, Wish me luck. I'll share the end result. I'm so glad I found you.
Loved this video. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who has not made a quilt for myself...YET. Girl, make that quilt!!! The fabric is beautiful. Can't wait to see the finished memory quilt. I love how you engage with the people you are serving.
Hello! Wow! Did I learn a lot from you & your awesome video!! I’m super impressed at how efficient you are!! I’m not a quilter, bc it just seems to be too challenging for me. But, I’m going to watch all your videos & continue to learn from you. Then, I might give it a try. Thank you for sharing your technics!!
I am working on 3 memory quilts for my friend's kiddos from her husband's shirts. He passed 10 years ago, and we were going to make a quilt for her, but she was very emotional and just couldn't do it. He was a size 17 to 18 shirt plus long sleeves of 35 to 37 inches. I got (50) 5" blocks from each shirt. A couple I got (60) 5" squares. I know, it sounds like a lot, but on fabric with no direction, it was quite interesting. I never thought that there would be that much. I am making HST's as there are so many pattern configurations to do. Plus, I have pieces that are 2 to 2.5 inches from the sides that I will use to make dogs for each of the 6 grandkids. I got a free pattern on Pay It Forward for 2 different dogs. Any pieces left over will be a scrappy border or binding. I also bought a bolt (20" x 48 yds) of Pellon 44f for stabilizing. I used that on 6 memory bears that I made out of my friends' shirts for her grandkids after she passed this year. Thankfully she had kept her husband's shirts so that I can do these quilts for her children.
That’s wonderful! I would love to see them when they are complete. It is such an emotional process for the family members and so emotionally rewarding for us when we see how happy they are when they receive the quilts and bears. Thank you for watching!
After my husband passed I cut his shirts in 2 1/2 “ strips and had enough fabric to make front and back of a queen size quilt. I call mine a comfort quilt. I am going❤ to put the name of all our family on the quilt.
Good video. Simple instructions, easy to follow. Would love to see an entire quilt from start to finish but realize that it takes so much more time to film.
Thank you for watching. We lost our part 2 footage. But we are working on another quilt (personal quilt) this time and we will upload that footage as a complete video if it isn’t too long. :)
Hi Rosemary, Thank you so much for watching. I am so wasteful when it come to my stabilizer...I really should figure out a way to save on it so I could save some money too. I'm an apparel decorator by trade and love using my heat press rather than my iron it is so much quicker. :)
Hi there...did you ever make part 2? Would have loved to see you do that! This was quite informative. I making one for the first time. My father in law just passed away and I'm attempting to make a few....would have loved to see you do the rest of this!
Hi Chris Ann, I did and we lost the footage...so sad...but, we may have another memory quilt order coming in within the next month or so and we will make sure we put that sd card somewhere safe. :)
@P&B Oh that would be great! I am making a memory quilt for the first time, actually the first time making a quilt period. I found your video and teaching style quite inspiring! I'd love to see you go through your whole process!!
I would still use some type of fusible interfacing unless you are going to fuse the fabrics together. Otherwise if I am understanding correctly and you sandwich two pieces of the same material to help prevent transparency it can shift and cause other issues.
Efficient might have been a longer ruler and cutting strips to then cut into 4 1/2" blocks? I would be worried about cutting off a finger trying to cut the squares with such a small ruler :)
I am learning so much I have so many of my Dear Sons tshirts and button dress shirts I was having a hard time to cut them My first project why I am here is my oldest daughters pink gingham check twin comforter which is a total wreck from 2 years old to current day 44 years I washed it and I now want to make her a surprise lap top or a bit larger quilt I now know I need to reinforce the backs I have washed old baby clothes of hers Trying to decide what size squares is I see important I’m rambling and sorry
You can ramble all you want. Cut apart things you have held onto and cherrish is not easy. Take your time. I have found the easiest thing to do is pick one size you would like a block to be...if this is by cutting out a shirt into the largest size block you want to have in the quilt...then go with that...now take the smaller items and cut them into smaller blocks and then sew those smaller blocks together until you have a block that is as big as the larger shirt block you made. This will help make it a little easier then having a bunch of different sized blocks all over and hopefully keep from having you overwhelm yourself as to where to go next.
Thank you very much I plan to cut I am thinking what I can salvage into 8x 8 squares Then go to the fabric store and find some pink or white fabric My first thing is to make sure that is a good size 8 x8 and I will iron the sizing on the back to stiffen it up Washed it this past week with some amazing detergent that keeps the smell Then I have all her baby clothes to decide to cut or save for her daughter who is 13 a few good dresses I’m excited to get started You and so many are absolutely amazing
I like your idea of the big block and making smaller pieces to make the same size That will be very cool You would laugh if you saw the condition of this blanket But I will get there The binding …well I will wait until I get there lol Thank you 😊
Hi, if we sew a plaid, and the piece of fleece is smaller than the project, how can we do ? we sew piece of fleece together ? but it's complicated to do that. If we add pieces of fleece it could be seen.
Hi Susan, We lost our footage of part 2. We will be making another quilt in the future shortly that is very similar and will add that footage as our second part. Thank you for watching. Sorry for the delay.
Hi Tracy, I have not posted it yet! We tried like crazy to get back to this one right away and well life happened. But, we are hoping to get back to finishing this one up over the weekend. I will post a reply here for you as soon as it is up. Thank you for watching. I'm not the best at making videos for sure...but I try. :)
Hi Diane, Once you have decided how you would like your quilt blocks you can start sewing your blocks together with a 1/4" seam allowance. I start left to right sewing one row together at a time and then I sew the top to the middle and then to the top/middle to the bottom row. I press everything nice and flat and cut any stray thread hanging around. Once all of my 9 patch blocks are sewn together I do the same thing on a larger scale...I take the first 9 patch block and sew it to the middle and keep working from left to right or top to bottom it is your preference and however, it works and is comfortable for you. When all the blocks are sewn together and you have your quilt top completed I iron everything again and cut any stray threads. Now you can pick your batting and backing. I use a cotton/poly blend batting and I go for a backing material that has a pattern to it to help hide any mistakes in the longarming process. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm sorry we were unable to film parts 2 and 3. I will be making a t-shirt quilt within the next couple of weeks and a lot of the techniques used will be in that video. Kelly
Hi Gabrielle, We lost our footage of part 2 unfortunately. We are hoping to make another one soon since we have survived the Christmas rush around here.
Hi Charlene, We unfortunately lost all of video footage of part 2…we did share a short of what the completed quilt ended up looking like. We will be making a memory quilt tutorial again that will cover everything we lost in this one. Sorry

I’m so sorry for your loss. It is exactly that…a comforting quilt…with memories and what can sometimes feel like one more hug.
You could make guitar blocks the size of your 9 patch and have them interspersed throughout.

I really enjoyed this video. Just wondering where I can view part 2
Unfortunately we lost our footage. We are working on another video.
I love adding pockets to my quilts…kids can put stuff inside the pockets…some remotes fit in the pockets too
This what very helpful! I am currently charged w doing one for my sister…
Flannel shirts…different thickness…..help!
Hi Karen, How can we help?
I would cut 4 1/2 inch strips first then cut the squares from the strips.
Hi
Lovely, instead of interfacing the shirts cab we double up with see through fabrics?
I would still use some type of fusible interfacing unless you are going to fuse the fabrics together. Otherwise if I am understanding correctly and you sandwich two pieces of the same material to help prevent transparency it can shift and cause other issues.
@@Pookyandbell ok. Thanks
It's been over a year and no part 2. Will pass on. Your RUclips channel

Very true! I get chills when I think about it! I need to practice more patience and I’ll have a better chance of saving my fingers.

If the guitar is really imo. Because the person played one, then you could make a block the size of all the strips together?
Great idea!

What temp do you have the heat press temp set at?
320 degrees…I do not even lock it in…just pull it down for a few seconds…check it…and press a little more if needed.

Did part 2 ever happen ?
We lost our footage unfortunately. We are working on another video to cover all the steps.
Why not cut long strips. Make strip sets, & then subcut?
This is a wonderful suggestion. I’ll try it with the next memory quilt. Thank you for watching.
My thoughts exactly. It would be so much faster to cut 4.5” strips and then subcut into 4.5” squares.
Where is part 2?
Hi Gabrielle, We lost our footage of part 2 unfortunately. We are hoping to make another one soon since we have survived the Christmas rush around here.

Omg, the plaids and stripes are not aligned?! Yuck
For some that isn’t an issue since it is more about the memory of the deceased loved one that means more to them.
Where is part two?
