Growing up, my daddy was the manager of a sewing factory that made good-quality men's dress shirts. Momma, and all of the ladies that worked there, would take the scraps to make quilts with. Momma would get some good-sized pieces from Daddy to make our Easter dresses. All 4 of us dressed alike and she never used a pattern. She was crazy talented. Those were the best feeling, the best quality quilts you could find. Thanks for the memory.
My first quilt, a queen size, was made with my late husband’s all cotton dress shirts. A very special memory quilt that has provided great comfort to myself and others. This gave me a new hobby to leave a legacy to my son and grandchildren.
I saved shirts for years and When my husband retired, I cut up his cotton work shirts, and have made 2 quilts so far! I quilted his favorite sayings through out. I Backed them with flannel. Now They are his fav quilts...
@@BlessedBaublesI used warm and natural batting. The backing was flannel. The work shirts were mostly heavy weight plaid cotton wovens. It’s a warm and heavy quilt.
After my father passed away, my mother used all of Dad's shirts and made four quilts out of them (for four children). It is one of my most treasured possessions and the quilt I reach for when I'm sick or depressed. It is a special hug from both of them.
When my dad passes I got his shirts and made quilts and pillows for everyone on the family too! It's so nice to hear that someone else has done that!🧡🧡🧡
My grandmother only used shirts for her fabric and sheets for backing. She was born in 1902 and used everything. I’m so glad others are doing the same.
Hi there. Maybe you can help me then? I bought a quilt of eBay. It's a beautiful cotton quilt that someone finished with sheet fabric on the back and some on the borders, but because the sheet fabric is stiffer than the quilt top fabrics, the quilt stitches that Sandwhich it together tear apart when using the quilt. Do you think it's because your grandmother used a stretchier type of sheet like maybe muslin, that sheets worked for her? Or could it be in the quilt stitching? I need to decide wether to give the quilt to the thrift or try to fix it. I have other projects I could work on that are much more prize winning projects, so it wouldn't be terrible if I don't fix this one quilt, but I'd love to know why this happened to it. I always thought sheets would be fine too, until I saw how this quilt is behaving. Thank you!! And I'm really glad you had a quilting grandmother. My grandparents were of that same generation. Such a wonderful generation. We are so blessed to have had them.
@CheriByGrace I'm pretty sure the thread/stitching on the quilt is just bad. It wouldn't make sense for a stiff backing on the quilt to make the stitching tear. It would just make the quilt stiff.
Quilting with discards is returning to quilting roots and reasons. I sewed clothing for 50 years, used scraps for everything else, since 2018 I thrift and cut clothing for quilts. It's been a fun, circular road. LOL
Isn't it though! Using what you have, or repurposing someone else's discards is so practical, and making something beautiful out of remnants is so rewarding. I have nothing but respect for you for sewing clothing---I think it's harder than most people think! So glad you watched and commented!
Same is the case with me. Now after sewing for about forty years I am now making quilts or patchwork bedcovers from my scraps. I will now add old shirts to my stock

This was how quilting started. I have never understood spending a lot of money to make a quilt. I also use men's shirts for quilting and clothes making and all sorts of things - even ties. HOW RANDOM TO FIND THIS! My good friend brought me a BUNCH of mens button ups the other month and she said “sorry it’s ugly, but I know you always need fabric”. I let it sit until I needed to make a project that needed “ugly” fabric and was BLOWN AWAY by how easy and nice it is to work with. From its thickness to its softness to not fraying to being easy to press, and they come with a decent amount of fabric too! Now if only it would get in style again for men to be flashy like they were in the 70s 😆
I've been making children's clothing since my son was a baby from men's shirts. Not only dress shirts but also flannel shirts. Men's flannel shirts make the most wonderful little girl's warm dresses .

Yes!! Agree with all of this!! The 2 baby quilts I have made from mens dress shirts have held up SO well. They are so soft!! I have a huge tub with my husband and son’s shirts that they’ve out grown or that are “outdated”. 😊 Such a great use of mens shirts!! Love this video!! Thank you!!

I love the fact that quilts made of thrifted men’s shirts have a wonderful soft, used quality 🥰 that you don’t get when using new quilting fabric. The feel of a shirt quilt is so different and so much better 😊😊 And it feels good creating something so lovey with recycled fabrics 👍🇬🇧
I’m from England and our charity shops are so tiny compared to your thrift shops. When we visited California the other year we happily scoured the thrift shops there. Also our charity shop prices have risen, and several times I’ve found the exact item cheaper, new. I also love that so much of your bed linens are 100% cotton, ours are often poly cotton, which is just not the same. So use and love your thrift stores.
Even our thrift store prices have increased, so we have that in common! But thank you for your gentle reminder to be grateful for what we have! I had no idea (but I'm learning) that second-hand clothing shops around the world aren't maybe bursting at the seams like ours are here! Thank you for watching and commenting!

I think I should purchase the things that appeal to me even if I dont yet have a plan in mind for it, sometimes second hand ,Ive purchased colors and patterns that I would not have bought at a fabric store, and much to my surprise they match and work with things that I did already have from stores! Yes, so true about sheets! I just used a pillowcase on a baby quilt and it was so soft...although sheets sometimes aren't 100% cotton so they won't hold a crease! It will no doubt be emotional getting them out and remembering, but I imagine having a beautiful quilt with that fabric will be comforting too---and if that isn't just what a quilt is about, I don't know what is!
I have purchased flat sheets at Walmart before to make the backs of a few quilts as they were cheaper than fabric and fit my very limited budget at the time (none available at thrift stores near me).
I started from my husbands closet.when he became I’ll, and his weight fluctuated over the last 6 yrs. To my amazement, I knew I wanted to make a quilt for my grown children, I wasn’t ready for them to be so excited with the idea!
My grandmother made clothes for her daughters and after she retired, she put them into quilts. Self-Taught! Soo many that her grand daughters & great grands are overwhelmed with quilts. I asked my sisters if they wanted a blanket or quilt from Mom's closet when she passed. They said no, but I don't think it's me, but Gmom's excess!
Hi from South Africa 🇿🇦 my husband is hoards and his cupboard was growing and growing. He hardly used them. So one day he said just do something with them...😊 so I started ripping them up for fabric, I was new to quilting but wow I had fun, learnt so much ( especially about bias😮) but I have my quilt together and working on my next scrappy QAYG. I got pants too, amazing. The other stuff I ripped and crocheted rugs... also tons of fun. Thanks for your wonderful videos and encouragement. We can truly save a fortune and recycle, as fabric is the largest waste on planet earth. So glad I found your channel ❤
New sub here...I also love men's shirts and bed linen. I enjoyed your enthusiasm in this video. I'm a touchy feely person with fabrics. My mom had a custom bedding and drapery shop in her home for over 20 years. She was the seamstress. The fabric would be delivered to her shop and the order would be faxed to her. After she made the items, an installer would pick it up. It was the perfect (and lucrative) business. I would stop by her home/shop and look and feel all the fabric! LOL! I've sewn off and on since Home Economics classes in high school. Now I'm retired and finally setting up my very own sewing room for personal use. I don't enjoy sewing clothes. But I love cutting them apart and making a quilt! My 1st project I want to make is sewing fabric together in a typical quilt pattern and make covers for my sofa and chairs. I think that would be very cozy and comfortable, which is my lifestyle. Thanks for taking the time and sharing.

I have been enjoying your videos on thrifted shirts. I just got home from a bag sale at my favorite thrift store. I bought 38 100 percent cotton dress shirts for only $10 total! I am beyond happy.
I also use them and have made literally dozens of quilts using men's dress shirts. Sometimes the fabric is absolutely wonderful! And when I wanted to make a Hawaiian themed quilt, the Hawaiian shirts were the best way to get this fabric!

What a wondrous idea, not only are you making beautiful things with the fabric but more importantly you are recycling in the best way possi ble. I will be going out soon to look in the dress shirt sections of my local thrift shops, I have to say that they are generally not very popular with people, its something you just dont really think of to do with those shirts. There are mountains of them and they just keep coming so there will never be any shortage of them in my opinion. The other obvious thing is that its usually only the collars, cuffs and under arms that get soiled, and you dont need those bits to make quilts. I guess you can also recycle all the buttons for other uses, its just a great idea. Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention, never would have thought of it in a million years, you are one very clever girl....

I've been buying men's dress shirts from thrift for fabric for years. I especially love linen. I will buy all the white linen I can get to mix in with my colored fabric to make quilts. I have the same "touch" thing. Great video. Thanks for sharing. BTW, Look up the energy from Linen.

Kaffe Fassett isn't pronounced that way, but I love your enthusiasm in talking him and his wonderful fabrics. Kaffe sounds like "cape," but with an F, only one syllable. Fassett has the accent on the first syllable. I'm definitely going to start looking for these shirts! Love this video.
I have a big collection of men's shirts that I pull from regularly. I even like the task of cutting them all up, ironing the pieces and carefully folding them and placing the fabric in my stash. And, yes, I save all the buttons in a big jar! Recently while grocery shopping, I passed a man wearing a pale yellow shirt with dachshunds scattered all over it. I wanted to stop him and offer to buy him a new shirt if I could have the one he was wearing!! (do you think I'm getting a little carried away here??) I want that shirt so bad!!

I use man s shirts for about 5-6 years now , as quilting is not known in my country nor well known where i live now, if i can find quilting fabrics even they are so expencive , or i have to wait for a western expatriate or australian who is leaving to buy second hand ones. So i found that man s shirts, bed sheets ... are gorgeous for my hobby. Nice video , thank you for sharing 🌷
I know. I live in Poland and quilting fabric is expensive, but thrift stores often sell their shirts quite inexpensively - esp. the ones that get in new stock every certain number of days. The last day before they restock things are very inexpensive, and you can pick up a lot for something like 25cents per shirt. I had to quit going. Seriously. I would bring home 40 at a time.
I buy nearly all my fabrics at thrift stores and love it. Some stores sell fabric by the yard, and I’ve found some of the most fantastic home dec and upholstery fabrics you can imagine. I take apart men’s sport jackets [wool, wool & silk, 100% silk], which is quite a job, denims, overcoats and other heavy-duty fabrics to make totes and various other bags. I live within a half mile of a fab shop that has a massive men’s clothing area, with everything I could want. I have recently decided to get back into quilting and know I’ll be cutting up shirts in the near future. I have memorized their discount calendar, and have been a regular patron for a while. I enjoy salvaging, thus keeping at least a little bit out of landfills.
It’s totally a thing-especially for those of us who already love shopping at the thrift store! And yes, you’re right, SO many wonderful fabrics (even yardage) can be found there! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! ❤️
I loved watching your video. I especially loved hearing how you should love the fabric / shirts you purchase for your quilt. Not only that, but I'm a firm believer that a quilter or artisan of any kind, will transfer the love and passion they feel into their work. The lucky receiver then feels that love from the quilt. Native Americans call this concept, "giving good medicine". A part of you, is the secondary benefit of such a gift.
Well you did it. I was in a nearly new store just recently and took off with 2 beautiful men’s shirts and cut them up. Gorgeous black print type fabric, great quality and you could see they were actually NEW! All your fault too…..thank you!
I also look at cotton tablecloths and curtains to use as battings and backings. I learned that tip from my Mom and Grandma, who used to make quilts for overseas charities through our church.
This really is a excellent idea. Ive been a tailor for 30yrs and mostly in bridal/formalwear and men's attire. I have seen so many fabrics and patterns and colors in men's dress shirts that were so sharp, and at one point I was making dress shirts and oxford shirts for guys. I am sure they would make some really awesome quilts, so much so that I have got to give it a try. ;)

I also shop mens shirts by feel❤️. I always think that someone has done the work of wearing them for me! Then they have been worn into that comfortable state that feels so luxurious on the skin. Use them for binding as well ….love love love. Thanks for sharing your joy 🤩
I bought 430 men's shirt one year from the thrift store. I washed, cut and color coordinated! So beautiful. I made a couple of quilts and entered into the county fair and received Grand Champion and reserve Grand Champion. How excited I was! Excellent quality!

You are completely speaking my language! Touching the fabric is one of the reasons I have always been drawn to it. My mother passed her love of unique items on to me. One of the main things my father taught me was "sweat equity", and that isn't a common phrase. I always loved men's dress shirts but haven't sewn with them. Thank you for the inspiration! My treasure hunts for thrifted sheets just expanded.
This video popped up on my feed and I am so glad!! I enjoy making scrappy quilts, but had not considered men's dress shirts. I thoroughly enjoy thrift shopping! Just made a quilt for our niece who requested purple and orange as the dominate quilt colors. I used a variety of Kaffe Fassett fabrics, including the one you showed here. The quilt turned out to be quite pretty, although purple and orange would not be a combination I would have ever considered on my own 😀

I love thrift stores. Shopping is like a treasure hunt... sometimes you find it, sometimes not. I've made some pretty kids clothes from shirts. I made a lovely little sun dress from a pastel green and white seersucker shirt. I appliqued some flowers on it and you'd never know it was a men's shirt.
I love them too! And you are so right... it IS a treasure hunt! ❤️ That's the best part of using men's shirts to quilt---almost no one would know unless we pointed it out! 🤩

Heck, you are so right, about the quality of the fabric. Those shirts are exceptional quality, most of the time, and certainly one cannot always buy that type of quality fabric, at a material shop, and if you do, it normally is very expensive. I thrift men's shirts for sewing, too. Only 100% cotton or linen, though. Sometimes I can find silk. I make napkins, placemats, pillow covers, and other home things. I have saved the leftovers for scrappy quilts. Thanks for the inspiration to get to it. Kaffe Fassett fabrics. [swoon]
I love to shop at thrift stores. I feel like I'm supporting a great cause so it is a donation and not an expense! This is a video that will certainly spark some inspiration and have quilters looking at their thrift shop experience differently. I do the same thing....touch, touch, touch...something I have always done in clothing stores. (on the discount racks of course). I also look in the home goods section. Once I found cotton shirting yardage in a beautiful chambray with white and blue ticking pattern. It was so beautiful and soft--i conscripted it into masks. For non-quilters, but sewists, they have lots of cool fabrics light shirting that is in a stash that survives them. I have also found many high quality sheets. In addition to backs or cut up, they make great liners for totes. Quilters can give those fabrics a reimagined life in a quilt). Also for any who use wools, you can find beautiful men's/women's wool coats at a fraction of the cost for yardage.
Thanks for the comment! As for wools, yes I have used them too, and sometimes stumble on 100% wool pants which also provide a surprising amount of fabric! I think we thrift-shoppers look at clothes (and sheets, and table linens, etc.) with different eyes; hopefully these videos will show the way to others!

Well, I was just debating on what to do with my hubby's nice dress shirts (that he rarely used)...give them to the Goodwill or keep them. My first instinct, as a lifetime quilter, was to keep them of course, especially since I do also buy other clothing to recycle. So, I had to chuckle about you "buying back" the shirt you donated and figured that would probably be me too...ha ha. So, I might as well just cut them up for later, right?! Thanks for this excellent demo video to show how much usable fabric we can get from the different size shirts. Definitely helped make up my mind... ha ha!
Very well made video. I enjoyed it, as well as your promotion of using men's dress shirts. One of the big down sides of quilting for me has been the expensive fabrics, rulers and notions. Thank you for this.
So I started wearing men's dress shirts to work when COVID hit and I was required to wear long sleeves for my infant room daycare job. My job bought polyester smock cardigans that were horrible and I immediately asked if I could wear long sleeve dress shirts. Men's shirts have lots more room and are comfy. Fast forward 2 years I have around 20 men's dress shirts in my closet and I'm always checking goodwill for different men's dress shirts. At $4.30 per shirt it's easy to update my work wardrobe. Anyway I decided a while ago that I wanted to make a quilt with the shirts when I'm done. They're all brand name shirts, great fabric and most of them are blue and a plaid of some sort. Ok most of them are gingham plaid, it's an addiction 😂. Anyway I'm thrilled to see your channel and learn the best way to go about this.
I love your approach and I think this is the definition of upcycling. I have my great grandmonthers quilt that she brought from Austria, blue and an off-white linen. She told me it was made with old dungarees and flour sacks. It is so soft but I only display it now because it has become so fragile. I just attended a community rummage sale on the last day and was handed a bag and told fill it for $5. I found so much vintage linen I will be making into a roxy fabric journal. I love your term "sewist" and that is going to be how I define my method going forward. Love your videos. Thank you.

I shop by feel also. My husband always says ’do you have to touch everything?’ The answer is yes, when I’m shopping for fabric. I have made some wonderful quilts entirely with fabric from mens shirts. There is so much yardage in an x-large shirt and the dress shirts are such nice quality fabric. I always check out sheets, curtains, becomes, and table cloths for material. I have gotten 2 large linen table cloths that way for3 dollars each. Why I never thought to check out men's dress shirts is beyond me. Thank you so much.

I love working with business shirts and think shopping by feel is the best way to shop. I have even made patchwork curtains from poly cotton blend men's shirts. The poly helps the fabric and the colour hold up better to the UV exposure.
Smart! Only bad thing about poly blend is it won’t hold a crease as well…which is needed in quilting! LOVE the feel of them too! Thanks for your comment!

Wonderful video!!! Ty!!! I too, buy men's dress shirts as they're made larger through the shoulders and the sleeves are longer than women's shirts. The fabrics are higher quality and they don't fall apart or shrink. I then embroider them. I wear them over my t shirts.

This sounds like a fabulous strategy for finding white-on-white or blender fabrics, especially more masculine ones - I am working on Quilts of Valor and finding masculine prints for male recipients is surprisingly tricky! Brilliant!

Growing up, my daddy was the manager of a sewing factory that made good-quality men's dress shirts. Momma, and all of the ladies that worked there, would take the scraps to make quilts with. Momma would get some good-sized pieces from Daddy to make our Easter dresses. All 4 of us dressed alike and she never used a pattern. She was crazy talented. Those were the best feeling, the best quality quilts you could find. Thanks for the memory.

My first quilt, a queen size, was made with my late husband’s all cotton dress shirts. A very special memory quilt that has provided great comfort to myself and others. This gave me a new hobby to leave a legacy to my son and grandchildren.
I saved shirts for years and When my husband retired, I cut up his cotton work shirts, and have made 2 quilts so far! I quilted his favorite sayings through out. I Backed them with flannel. Now They are his fav quilts...

The work shirts were mostly heavy weight plaid cotton wovens. It’s a warm and heavy quilt.
After my father passed away, my mother used all of Dad's shirts and made four quilts out of them (for four children). It is one of my most treasured possessions and the quilt I reach for when I'm sick or depressed. It is a special hug from both of them.
When my dad passes I got his shirts and made quilts and pillows for everyone on the family too! It's so nice to hear that someone else has done that!🧡🧡🧡
What if one shirt is a more loose woven fabric than others? It would be easier for me to start if I knew brands to look for.
My grandmother only used shirts for her fabric and sheets for backing. She was born in 1902 and used everything. I’m so glad others are doing the same.

I bought a quilt of eBay. It's a beautiful cotton quilt that someone finished with sheet fabric on the back and some on the borders, but because the sheet fabric is stiffer than the quilt top fabrics, the quilt stitches that Sandwhich it together tear apart when using the quilt.
Do you think it's because your grandmother used a stretchier type of sheet like maybe muslin, that sheets worked for her? Or could it be in the quilt stitching?
I need to decide wether to give the quilt to the thrift or try to fix it.
I have other projects I could work on that are much more prize winning projects, so it wouldn't be terrible if I don't fix this one quilt, but I'd love to know why this happened to it.
I always thought sheets would be fine too, until I saw how this quilt is behaving.

@CheriByGrace I'm pretty sure the thread/stitching on the quilt is just bad. It wouldn't make sense for a stiff backing on the quilt to make the stitching tear. It would just make the quilt stiff.
Quilting with discards is returning to quilting roots and reasons. I sewed clothing for 50 years, used scraps for everything else, since 2018 I thrift and cut clothing for quilts. It's been a fun, circular road. LOL
Isn't it though! Using what you have, or repurposing someone else's discards is so practical, and making something beautiful out of remnants is so rewarding. I have nothing but respect for you for sewing clothing---I think it's harder than most people think! So glad you watched and commented!
Same is the case with me. Now after sewing for about forty years I am now making quilts or patchwork bedcovers from my scraps. I will now add old shirts to my stock
Don't forget you can also use men's boxers. Taking about a different print of clothing

HOW RANDOM TO FIND THIS! My good friend brought me a BUNCH of mens button ups the other month and she said “sorry it’s ugly, but I know you always need fabric”. I let it sit until I needed to make a project that needed “ugly” fabric and was BLOWN AWAY by how easy and nice it is to work with. From its thickness to its softness to not fraying to being easy to press, and they come with a decent amount of fabric too! Now if only it would get in style again for men to be flashy like they were in the 70s 😆

I've been making children's clothing since my son was a baby from men's shirts. Not only dress shirts but also flannel shirts. Men's flannel shirts make the most wonderful little girl's warm dresses .

I love the fact that quilts made of thrifted men’s shirts have a wonderful soft, used quality 🥰 that you don’t get when using new quilting fabric. The feel of a shirt quilt is so different and so much better 😊😊 And it feels good creating something so lovey with recycled fabrics 👍🇬🇧

I’m from England and our charity shops are so tiny compared to your thrift shops. When we visited California the other year we happily scoured the thrift shops there. Also our charity shop prices have risen, and several times I’ve found the exact item cheaper, new. I also love that so much of your bed linens are 100% cotton, ours are often poly cotton, which is just not the same. So use and love your thrift stores.
I sometimes buy shirts in UK charity shops - 100% cotton typically £9.99.
Even our thrift store prices have increased, so we have that in common! But thank you for your gentle reminder to be grateful for what we have! I had no idea (but I'm learning) that second-hand clothing shops around the world aren't maybe bursting at the seams like ours are here!

Yes, so true about sheets! I just used a pillowcase on a baby quilt and it was so soft...although sheets sometimes aren't 100% cotton so they won't hold a crease! Thank you for the kind words...I'm glad you found me too! Definitely shop that closet! It will no doubt be emotional getting them out and remembering, but I imagine having a beautiful quilt with that fabric will be comforting too---and if that isn't just what a quilt is about, I don't know what is!

I have purchased flat sheets at Walmart before to make the backs of a few quilts as they were cheaper than fabric and fit my very limited budget at the time (none available at thrift stores near me).
I started from my husbands closet.when he became I’ll, and his weight fluctuated over the last 6 yrs. To my amazement, I knew I wanted to make a quilt for my grown children, I wasn’t ready for them to be so excited with the idea!

Hi from South Africa 🇿🇦 my husband is hoards and his cupboard was growing and growing. He hardly used them. So one day he said just do something with them...😊 so I started ripping them up for fabric, I was new to quilting but wow I had fun, learnt so much ( especially about bias😮) but I have my quilt together and working on my next scrappy QAYG. I got pants too, amazing. The other stuff I ripped and crocheted rugs... also tons of fun. Thanks for your wonderful videos and encouragement. We can truly save a fortune and recycle, as fabric is the largest waste on planet earth. So glad I found your channel ❤
New sub here...I also love men's shirts and bed linen. I enjoyed your enthusiasm in this video. I'm a touchy feely person with fabrics. My mom had a custom bedding and drapery shop in her home for over 20 years. She was the seamstress. The fabric would be delivered to her shop and the order would be faxed to her. After she made the items, an installer would pick it up. It was the perfect (and lucrative) business. I would stop by her home/shop and look and feel all the fabric! LOL! I've sewn off and on since Home Economics classes in high school. Now I'm retired and finally setting up my very own sewing room for personal use. I don't enjoy sewing clothes. But I love cutting them apart and making a quilt! My 1st project I want to make is sewing fabric together in a typical quilt pattern and make covers for my sofa and chairs. I think that would be very cozy and comfortable, which is my lifestyle. Thanks for taking the time and sharing.

I also use them and have made literally dozens of quilts using men's dress shirts. Sometimes the fabric is absolutely wonderful! And when I wanted to make a Hawaiian themed quilt, the Hawaiian shirts were the best way to get this fabric!

What a wondrous idea, not only are you making beautiful things with the fabric but more importantly you are recycling in the best way possi ble. I will be going out soon to look in the dress shirt sections of my local thrift shops, I have to say that they are generally not very popular with people, its something you just dont really think of to do with those shirts. There are mountains of them and they just keep coming so there will never be any shortage of them in my opinion. The other obvious thing is that its usually only the collars, cuffs and under arms that get soiled, and you dont need those bits to make quilts. I guess you can also recycle all the buttons for other uses, its just a great idea. Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention, never would have thought of it in a million years, you are one very clever girl....

Kaffe Fassett isn't pronounced that way, but I love your enthusiasm in talking him and his wonderful fabrics. Kaffe sounds like "cape," but with an F, only one syllable. Fassett has the accent on the first syllable. I'm definitely going to start looking for these shirts! Love this video.

I have a big collection of men's shirts that I pull from regularly. I even like the task of cutting them all up, ironing the pieces and carefully folding them and placing the fabric in my stash. And, yes, I save all the buttons in a big jar! Recently while grocery shopping, I passed a man wearing a pale yellow shirt with dachshunds scattered all over it. I wanted to stop him and offer to buy him a new shirt if I could have the one he was wearing!! (do you think I'm getting a little carried away here??) I want that shirt so bad!!

I use man s shirts for about 5-6 years now , as quilting is not known in my country nor well known where i live now, if i can find quilting fabrics even they are so expencive , or i have to wait for a western expatriate or australian who is leaving to buy second hand ones. So i found that man s shirts, bed sheets ... are gorgeous for my hobby.

I know. I live in Poland and quilting fabric is expensive, but thrift stores often sell their shirts quite inexpensively - esp. the ones that get in new stock every certain number of days. The last day before they restock things are very inexpensive, and you can pick up a lot for something like 25cents per shirt. I had to quit going. Seriously. I would bring home 40 at a time.
I buy nearly all my fabrics at thrift stores and love it. Some stores sell fabric by the yard, and I’ve found some of the most fantastic home dec and upholstery fabrics you can imagine. I take apart men’s sport jackets [wool, wool & silk, 100% silk], which is quite a job, denims, overcoats and other heavy-duty fabrics to make totes and various other bags. I live within a half mile of a fab shop that has a massive men’s clothing area, with everything I could want. I have recently decided to get back into quilting and know I’ll be cutting up shirts in the near future. I have memorized their discount calendar, and have been a regular patron for a while. I enjoy salvaging, thus keeping at least a little bit out of landfills.
It’s totally a thing-especially for those of us who already love shopping at the thrift store! And yes, you’re right, SO many wonderful fabrics (even yardage) can be found there! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! ❤️
I loved watching your video. I especially loved hearing how you should love the fabric / shirts you purchase for your quilt. Not only that, but I'm a firm believer that a quilter or artisan of any kind, will transfer the love and passion they feel into their work. The lucky receiver then feels that love from the quilt. Native Americans call this concept, "giving good medicine". A part of you, is the secondary benefit of such a gift.

Well you did it. I was in a nearly new store just recently and took off with 2 beautiful men’s shirts and cut them up. Gorgeous black print type fabric, great quality and you could see they were actually NEW! All your fault too…..thank you!

I also look at cotton tablecloths and curtains to use as battings and backings. I learned that tip from my Mom and Grandma, who used to make quilts for overseas charities through our church.
Curtains make excellent tablecloths too.
This really is a excellent idea. Ive been a tailor for 30yrs and mostly in bridal/formalwear and men's attire. I have seen so many fabrics and patterns and colors in men's dress shirts that were so sharp, and at one point I was making dress shirts and oxford shirts for guys. I am sure they would make some really awesome quilts, so much so that I have got to give it a try. ;)

I bought 430 men's shirt one year from the thrift store. I washed, cut and color coordinated! So beautiful. I made a couple of quilts and entered into the county fair and received Grand Champion and reserve Grand Champion. How excited I was! Excellent quality!

You are completely speaking my language! Touching the fabric is one of the reasons I have always been drawn to it. My mother passed her love of unique items on to me. One of the main things my father taught me was "sweat equity", and that isn't a common phrase. I always loved men's dress shirts but haven't sewn with them. Thank you for the inspiration! This video popped up on my feed and I am so glad!! I enjoy making scrappy quilts, but had not considered men's dress shirts. I thoroughly enjoy thrift shopping! Just made a quilt for our niece who requested purple and orange as the dominate quilt colors. I used a variety of Kaffe Fassett fabrics, including the one you showed here. The quilt turned out to be quite pretty, although purple and orange would not be a combination I would have ever considered on my own 😀

I love thrift stores. Shopping is like a treasure hunt... sometimes you find it, sometimes not. I've made some pretty kids clothes from shirts. I made a lovely little sun dress from a pastel green and white seersucker shirt. I appliqued some flowers on it and you'd never know it was a men's shirt.

Heck, you are so right, about the quality of the fabric. Those shirts are exceptional quality, most of the time, and certainly one cannot always buy that type of quality fabric, at a material shop, and if you do, it normally is very expensive. When you pulled out the purple shirt the sheen, the quality, feel (I love fabric) could be readily observed.The whites shirts and blue shirts were too light to show the qualities that you'd been describing, therefore, I was envious that you had that magnificent shirt and I didn't. I thrift men's shirts for sewing, too. Only 100% cotton or linen, though. Sometimes I can find silk.
I make napkins, placemats, pillow covers, and other home things. I have saved the leftovers for scrappy quilts. Thanks for the inspiration to get to it.

I love to shop at thrift stores. I feel like I'm supporting a great cause so it is a donation and not an expense! This is a video that will certainly spark some inspiration and have quilters looking at their thrift shop experience differently.
I do the same thing....touch, touch, touch...something I have always done in clothing stores. (on the discount racks of course). I also look in the home goods section. Once I found cotton shirting yardage in a beautiful chambray with white and blue ticking pattern. It was so beautiful and soft--i conscripted it into masks. For non-quilters, but sewists, they have lots of cool fabrics light shirting that is in a stash that survives them. I have also found many high quality sheets. In addition to backs or cut up, they make great liners for totes. Quilters can give those fabrics a reimagined life in a quilt). Also for any who use wools, you can find beautiful men's/women's wool coats at a fraction of the cost for yardage.

As for wools, yes I have used them too, and sometimes stumble on 100% wool pants which also provide a surprising amount of fabric!
I think we thrift-shoppers look at clothes (and sheets, and table linens, etc.) with different eyes; hopefully these videos will show the way to others!

Well, I was just debating on what to do with my hubby's nice dress shirts (that he rarely used)...give them to the Goodwill or keep them. My first instinct, as a lifetime quilter, was to keep them of course, especially since I do also buy other clothing to recycle. So, I had to chuckle about you "buying back" the shirt you donated and figured that would probably be me too...ha ha. So, I might as well just cut them up for later, right?! Thanks for this excellent demo video to show how much usable fabric we can get from the different size shirts. Definitely helped make up my mind... ha ha!

So I started wearing men's dress shirts to work when COVID hit and I was required to wear long sleeves for my infant room daycare job. My job bought polyester smock cardigans that were horrible and I immediately asked if I could wear long sleeve dress shirts. Men's shirts have lots more room and are comfy. Fast forward 2 years I have around 20 men's dress shirts in my closet and I'm always checking goodwill for different men's dress shirts. At $4.30 per shirt it's easy to update my work wardrobe. Anyway I decided a while ago that I wanted to make a quilt with the shirts when I'm done. They're all brand name shirts, great fabric and most of them are blue and a plaid of some sort. Ok most of them are gingham plaid, it's an addiction 😂. Anyway I'm thrilled to see your channel and learn the best way to go about this.

I love your approach and I think this is the definition of upcycling. I have my great grandmonthers quilt that she brought from Austria, blue and an off-white linen. She told me it was made with old dungarees and flour sacks. It is so soft but I only display it now because it has become so fragile. I just attended a community rummage sale on the last day and was handed a bag and told fill it for $5. I found so much vintage linen I will be making into a roxy fabric journal. I love your term "sewist" and that is going to be how I define my method going forward. Love your videos. Thank you.

I shop by feel also. My husband always says ’do you have to touch everything?’ The answer is yes, when I’m shopping for fabric. I have made some wonderful quilts entirely with fabric from mens shirts. There is so much yardage in an x-large shirt and the dress shirts are such nice quality fabric. I always check out sheets, curtains, becomes, and table cloths for material. I have gotten 2 large linen table cloths that way for3 dollars each. Why I never thought to check out men's dress shirts is beyond me. Thank you so much.

I really try to use 100% cotton, linen or linen/cotton blend. Sometimes I break my own rule and I always regret it.

I love working with business shirts and think shopping by feel is the best way to shop. I have even made patchwork curtains from poly cotton blend men's shirts. The poly helps the fabric and the colour hold up better to the UV exposure.
Smart! Only bad thing about poly blend is it won’t hold a crease as well…which is needed in quilting!

Wonderful video!!! Ty!!! I too, buy men's dress shirts as they're made larger through the shoulders and the sleeves are longer than women's shirts. The fabrics are higher quality and they don't fall apart or shrink. I then embroider them. I wear them over my t shirts.

This sounds like a fabulous strategy for finding white-on-white or blender fabrics, especially more masculine ones - I am working on Quilts of Valor and finding masculine prints for male recipients is surprisingly tricky! Brilliant!
