    Oh I see what you mean at the beginning of the video. I’m a relatively new quilter. But this hurts my heart. 😂
    I will continue to bind my quilts. But I am interested in getting a serger one day. This would be a nice edging to keep the sandwich in place while adding my binding. Thank you so much for this video! 🤗

    • @TalohaStudios
      @TalohaStudios  6 месяцев назад

      Wonderful! I’m a self taught quilter so I haven’t received hands on binding instructions. I discovered this technique because I used the serger to “square up” my quilt sandwich prior to attaching the binding. That’s when I said, hold up, how about I just use pretty threads & skip the binding 😂. So yes, this technique works very well prior to adding your beautiful binding 😊. Check out my girl Angelina at the Blueprint DIY RUclips channel. She has several videos on tips for purchasing a serger, so when you’re ready to take the leap, you’ll be well informed 😊 Thanks for commenting, I’m glad you stopped by. I hear ya 😊 Check out my girl Angelina on the Blueprint DIY RUclips channel. She has several videos on different sergers that are budget friendly. If possible, I totally recommend getting a serger with Airflow technology like the Brother or BabyLock because it makes threading the machine so much easier & less stressful. Also, try to get a machine with automatic tension, that also will relieve some of the stress/frustration with using a serger. Thank you so much for commenting. I’ll see you in my next video 😊👋🏽

      Differential Feed is a great feature. It’s just an adjustment capability you use if your edges are rippling; making your edges wavy, you adjust the differential feed and it will solve that problem by making your edges straight. That’s how people make lettuce edge ruffles; by adjusting the differential feed. It can go either way tighter or loser.

      I was intimidated by the looks of sergers too at first. I found one at Walmart for $218 and started there. I learned that if I can thread one needle, l can follow the oath and thread three more needles. That is essentially what makes a Seeger different. (Very basically).

    I use to make premie quilts and serged the edges with wooly nylon. The WN created a satin stitch effect. They looked great! Also, you can add a narrow border to your top then serge and it will look like it is bound.

      Cool! Premie quilts are labor of love and mean so much to the families who receive them. I’m a hospice nurse practitioner and have made quilts for my patients and they cherish them 😊. I love using my serger for binding! I do it a little differently. I make the binding using the folded corner ruler to cut the ends of the strips and I serge it to the back of the quilt then wrap it over to the front and use a blind stitch walking foot like an edge stitch foot to sew it to the front running the guide next to the edge. I love how the serger cuts off the threads and evens out the sandwich and even compresses it a bit so the binding lays flat. Thanks for the video it’s always great to see new techniques!

    Awh, Tammie, your quilt binding is awesome! I am skittish about bindings too! I do at times cut my end threads to short to use thread needle and still get the point into my fabric for hiding, BUT, BUT, I discovered that if I just get the thread into the eye of my needle, I push that end into the layers to hide it! So I just thread the eye, and with the eye end only, and ,push the eye into the fabric ( instead of the pointed end) just far enough for the thread to automatically come out of eye and stays in the fabric! Need is the mother of invention! Many times I have done this, right where the threads come out, I put that tiny short amount of thread into the eye, and the eye right into the hole it came out of, holding on to the pointed end of the needle! It works! I use this technique with my home machine mistakes, I don't have a serger yet! ❤ This video, and your love for making quilts! Have a most wonderful day. I

    Great idea! I'll be using it for the quilts I make for around here. Im not much fond of binding, either. One thing I've done to give the look of binding is to sew a 1 1/2" contrasting color border. Then sew the layers together in the inside out envelope style. I turn the quilt right sides out. I topstitch 1/4" from the edge, then stitch in the ditch the "binding" border. It looks bound, but isnt. I usually tie most of my quilts, so this method works well for me. There are no quilt police in our sewing spaces, unless we invite them in!🎉

    Love your channel. I think you and I are at about the same level in our quilting adventure. I've learned that there is a thread that's called "woolly thread" that is often used for this purpose. There is a bit of fuzz on it so the seam looks more contiguous/'closed'. Also, I'm not familiar with embroidery machines, but shouldn't there be a stitch on one of those that would accomplish this? Anyone? Asking for a friend. lol

    • @TalohaStudios
      @TalohaStudios  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you so much for commenting 😊. I’m glad you found the channel! If you have a modern sewing machine with decorative stitches, you can achieve this stitch look. However, it won’t cut off the extra fabric so you’ll have to “square up” your quilt sandwich before you finish the edges with the decorative stitches. I’ve used the wooly nylon thread & it comes out beautifully. I have both commercial & domestic embroidery machines and unfortunately it’s not feasible to do this process with those machines. Your best bet if you don’t have a serger is to use decorative stitches or bind your project the traditional way. Please make sure you’re subscribed & I’ll see you in the next video. Cheers 😊👋🏽

    Tammi, try using a metal crochet hook to bury your tails. It can even be used if you cut the tail tool short because you insert the hook and pull the thread tail through.

    You could use the cover stitch of the Triumph, with woolly nylon thread in the loopers. You sew it on the wrong side so the looper threads will make a decorative chain stitch on the right side of the quilt. I’m not sure if the Triumph has the Wave stitch like the Ovation does, but that would be a decorative option too.

    • @TalohaStudios
      @TalohaStudios  6 месяцев назад

      That is my next serging adventure 😊. Yes, the Triumph has the wave stitch! I just received some woolly nylon along with some 8 & 12 weight thread in the mail 😊. Make sure you’re subscribed. I’m uploading a video Monday using my new threads😊. Thank you so much for the guidance & commenting. I appreciate you being here. I’ll see you in my next video 😊👋🏽

      @@TalohaStudios you could totally make a whole new way of finishing edges of quilts and make a new style. You could finish with serger stitching or wave stitch, and then do two or three rows of coverstitch with fancy thick threads. So have a new kind of edging decorations instead of binding. It’s not traditional but who cares? Nothing wrong with traditional of course, but there are no “Quilt Police”. It is YOUR fabric art!!!

    I have used my serger on quilts, and smaller projects - like place mats - for a long time. If you don’t want your corners to have that tail of threads, cut your corners to be a curve.
    I would have tried to follow the tumbler angles, and see if that would work.

    As someone who hates doing corners, a compromise is to make large rounded corners, then the edging can go continuously around.

    I’m not a quilter but after I answered your reply and threw out more ideas, my brain got over active with ideas. It happens🙄. You could serge the edges then sew ribbon around the perimeter of the quilt. Or Rick-rack… or lace. I need to stop now. You’ll think of more ideas I’m sure!
