    I have successfully used a polyester shirt fabric to bind a child’s quilt that I knew would get lots of use. I also quilted it heavily to add sturdiness. It survived the baby, toddler and elementary years, including spit up, teething, picnics, fort building, traveling, sleeping and countless washes before it was put away. Years later it was returned to me to incorporate into a wedding quilt for that same child. I was going to cut the binding off, but the mama asked to me include some of it. So saved a piece attached to one side and cut the rest off. I used it to tie up/wrap the final quilt. All that’s to say, don’t give up on using the purple shirt!

    Those shirts that aren't suitable for quilting, can be used as gift wrap. I did that last year for Christmas. I used some left over jute material to wrap up the presents and held it together with string. They looked so lovely and everyone thought it was a great idea.

    I had a thought the other day of using my brother's old scrubs as part of a quilt, or finding used scrubs at thrift stores in cute prints to use as quilting fabric, then I realized that his are a cotton polyester blend and so the others likely are, too. My brother happily handed me 5 sets of scrubs in a deap teal. I think that it will be enough to make a decent quilt back, now to figure out the quilt top and binding.

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  4 месяца назад +1

      Kelly, scrubs are very often cotton-poly, so they won't hold a crease well (ie, not great for piecing) but they would probably be perfect for a quilt back. Be sure and wash and dry on hot to get all the germs out! 😘

    OMG Cathy, I just had to tell you how much I enjoyed this video. I laughed out loud and giggled along with you. I'm a TX. gal who has sewn sine 1964, pieced maybe 200 quilts since 1992, was taught about weave and grain from early on, as it is so very important in fashion sewing, therefore I look at all cotton and say is this really cotton?. AnyWho, I was hoping you would mention some brand names ???? to especially look for when first shopping men's shirts. If I missed a video with this information, can you please lead me to the water so that I can drink from that fountain. Can I say I love your personality and I can't imagine you ever meet a stranger. I started quilting last october, on my 18th quilt, bit addicted! So to keep costs down as I learned techniques all my material was from thrift shops. Shirts, sheets and wool blankets. I love using shirts and now also incorporate some quilt fabric too. As you say in Ireland we don’t have the same choice as in states, colour wise. We could always dye the fabric. It really keeps cost down and helps use up landfill waste. I love to reuse everything. Enjoying your videos

    After watching one of your videos, I went to Goodwill and bought 5 shirts for about $13. I skipped the white dress shirts since they were all $9.99. One shirt is 55% linen/ 45% cotton. So pretty. Three are 100% cotton and one is a poly/cotton blend. I thought I would try it to see how it works. As a quilter, I shouldn't say this, but I really don't need any fabric, but it's fun to search for the shirts and repurpose them.

      Mostly they don’t hold a crease well…but also they often crawl and slide under the sewing needle so it is challenging to get a straight line. Just be mindful if they feel a little silky or slippery even, you may not get nice precise lines or tight corners. Starch might help with both holding a line and a crease. 👍🏻

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  2 года назад +1

      The butter soft and supple is the best but it does not override the polyester component…which is why that blue and yellow quilt (from the “my very first quilt” video) was so cool and soft, but was challenging; it was tough to get flat, straight seams and the quilting puckered and pulled a little.
      Not so much that it detracted from the end quilt, but enough that as I sewed I kept wondering why the fabric crawled and I struggled to keep a nice even 1/4” seam. Spray starch helps some when piecing, as does pinning. Having a very sharp needle when quilting is a must. 👍🏻

    Ty for your video. I was wondering more about flannels after going to Goodwill today. What is your experience with using them? I was thinking about using flannel shirts as an interfacing or a lining when I quilt some old wool jackets to a long coat or in a fleece poncho. The flannel shirts were in different thickness & weaves, like the dress shirts. One of them must've been loved a lot because it was so thin. First im going to line a crocheted scrap buster hooded cape, just off my hook, with a sheet; either in a deep purple or a antique gold sheet i found at Goodwill. Ill quilt it by hand with some long running stitches and knots on the inside with crochet thread, not yarn

Anyway flannel goes on sale so often at Joann's that I'd skip the thrift store ones and just but it instead, by the yard. Most flannel shirts I find are pretty well worn, as in not worth the effort. You can buy some if you really want but think about this, I think flannel shirts are probably not given up willingly and it was smuggled out of the house in the dead of night and never mentioned again until said owner of the shirt discovers its absence. Men get attached to them because they're comfortable and they wear them to death. So, in reality, that shirt you might find was stolen and sacrificed in the interest of more closet space for the perpetrator of a marital crime. Now if you find one truly amazing flannel shirt, grab it but turn it into a teddy bear for a kid you love or donate it to the police for kids who might find themselves in a horrible situation like a house fire or at a shelter who could use a snuggle friend.

      I don't, honestly. But for my last project I used "Thatched" by Moda in an off-white/cream and I LOVED it. I do sometimes use a lot of white shirts but it is a little more tedious. 😉

    Can you use mens shirts with breast pocket?

      YES! I usually remove them, but if you want to use it as an interesting design feature, I say go for it! 👍🏻😊👍🏻

    How does “bless your bones” compare to “bless your heart”? 😄

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  2 года назад +2

      Similar except “bless your heart” can be an insult or a “dig”… whereas “bless your bones” is a real expression of sympathy or pity for the person! 🤣😉🥰

      @@TheCatBirdQuilts I’m going to start using “bless your bones” because I can only think of “bless your heart” as a dig. Thank you for the helpful information and new favorite southern expression!

      @@aleciab83 I love it too, and picked it up from one of my pharmacy technicians…I always tell her, “well they need to be blessed, it’s what’s holding me up!” 😂❤️

    Another fantastic video!
    I am waiting for you to have a mint julip and then record. I am sure you are the life of the party. Or maybe some Bourbon. 🥃

      Lol….sometimes! If I had a mint julep (well, it’d be more like a gin and tonic. Bourbon is yucky to me) I’d probably be so chill that you’d ask, “where did the fun girl go?” 😂 Who knows!
      But I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos! Thanks for watching! ❤️
