    Hi Cathy at The Cat Bird Quilts. I have a tip for you. Use a large safety pin to keep your fabric samples together when shopping. I have one clipped inside my purse attached to a carebinner ring.

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  2 года назад +7

      @@faintlyartistic7803 great idea! Another viewer (on a totally different video lol) uses the cuffs and threads the cuff buttonhole on a ring and keeps them in her purse. To your point, tho, the buttonhole placket would work like this but isn’t often used for anything else (but the cuffs might be) so it wouldn’t be “wasting” a usable piece of fabric!

    Yes. I go to the thrift store with a clip of snippets of fabric as I wade through a sea of men’s shirts attempting to find a match for various colors. I’m certain that workers wonder what I do with these random shirts I buy. I’ve come to appreciate opening a front shirt placket and seeing the fabric fade from light to dark and I can see it adding new character to the blocks. Thanks for leading me to this corner of the internet- where quilters sew with thrifted fabric.

    It is huge!
    I suppose everything in the US is oursized even the thrift stores😊
    Ours are small vut full to the brim, just like the country I live in -

    Love the video. Great fun to watch your decision making process whilst sorting through the shirts and fabric. The no, nah, nope sounds are very familiar 😀 I'm glad you left the peach linen with the large darts in the back. Having unpicked some in a shirt once, I found that they were still noticeable within the fabric, so I avoid them now. I do hope we can join you on future shopping trips, there's always something to be learned 🙂

    Loved this video! I was totally gobsmacked at how neat and tidy that Goodwill is. The Goodwill stores that I frequent in my area (in Indianapolis) are not as pretty and don’t seem to have that many “fabric” opportunities but I still look every time I go and, once in a while, I get lucky. You found so many great ones! Go you!! 🎉 And, you’re lucky, my oldest daughter would be saying, “You don’t need that” if I was on the fence about something. I don’t bring her anymore. 😂 Have a great weekend, Cathy!!

    Great haul! I did a quick tour of the linens and craft sections of my favorite thrift store today. I bought 2 cuts of cotton quilting fabric that were 2-3 yards each, and a 100% cotton shower curtain. The shower curtains are a bit heavier, but they make great backings for car/trunk quilts, which is something to have on hand in Midwest winters in case of car trouble. Can’t wait to see all that linen in future videos!

    14:48 Orange dyed with olive green can make a nice mahogany. 😎 Would bring it out of possibly too vibrant into rich. 💃🧵 It might take two whole separate dye baths to get the desired color or range of colors, and a high quality dye will make a difference. Dharma Trading Company in San Rafael, CA is my favorite source of high quality dyes and info. (aanndd … they sell linen yardage, 54” wide. Just sayin’ 😉)
    P.S. You can never have too much Butter Yellow. ☺️

    Oohh, what a haul!! I picked up some shirts a few days ago at the local tip shop! 5 the same!! Business branded shirts with a label on the back panel, two pockets each, double stitched, so all a bit dubious. But the color is a steel grey. For $2 each!! So I had to get them all. Will make the background fabric for a quilt with bright blocks. Score! Kinda like the color you picked out at the start of your video but was cotton poly. I got two other neutrals and a blue. $14.50 for 8 shirts. Love that shop. 😍 Now comes the fun part for us all, the processing.❤️

    I have that yellow shirt in my closet now. For work I was required to wear long sleeve shirts due to Covid. Men's shirts work really well and I'll probably wear them this winter even though I'm not required anymore. So I have a closet full of men's goodwill shirts that I was going to turn into a quilt (when I'm done wearing them). Had to check. 41 were 100% cotton. Only 4 were cotton poly. Oh and thanks for making me realize how many shirts I've bought. You buy a couple here a couple there next thing you know you've got 45 shirts😬🤫🤔. My husband doesn't need to know😂. It will be my Covid quilt.

And we both speak at “78 RPM” as my Dad used to say to me! My kids and grandkids are great thrift shoppers and they all try to buy things that reduce our carbon footprint. Not many people I’ve met over our years of moving around know what a bippy is and why you should bet it. Lol! None of our Goodwill stores have cool music nor are as clean so that may be why you found so many cool shirts. I never find more than one or two and absolutely never linen. I thrift store shopped for theatre costumes for 15 years. Use a shopping cart to hold your potential choices while you shop. Keep wet wipes in the car for after shopping. Find smaller thrift stores for great deals ($1 on 1st of month, everything fits into a bag for $5, etc.) Do you have a goodwill factory outlet near you? Clothing stacked in bins and sold by weight. And find senior citizen discount day for 20% off (50 years +).

    Here’s a tip for shopping with swatches. Get a loose leaf binder ring. Dollar store sell them. Poke a tiny hole into your swatch and thread it on the ring. I find it easier to thread swatches for different projects on separate rings and link them together. It’s so much easier to pull them in and out of your bag or pocket. I use binder rings for lots of things like grouping zipper sizes together. I have one ring for each size so I just pull out the right sized ring and see if I need to buy or not. You can also use shower curtain rings. The are especially good for hanging things up on pegboard walls. I use the narrow end to hang in the pegboard hook and the big end to thread the thing(s) I want to hang up on the wall. I have a number of rotary cutters and I finally grouped them all by size and hung them that way. I have one with “paper” on the handle in permanent marker and I use blades that are too dull for fabric on those. I also keep on with the pinking blade and one with the scallop blade for when I need those.

    That was sooooo fun! I was dying for you to get a cart after the first shirt. 😁 it is a rule for me to auto grab a cart even when I am “not going to buy anything”. Also - laughed out loud at the non-endorsement of bippy betting and the Morgan freeman pop up. - we are both STEM women and I can see we share similar habits - check everything, insisting on 100% (99 is not good enough) and a weird perpetual mental chemistry of textiles makeup, cleaning options and colouring. -. Had you not bought the orange shirt with the beautiful lined cuffs, I would have insisted you go back. Well done to your camera man for enabling the linen at the end. 💕💕💕💕💕💕

    I just bet others have asked you about this, so forgive me for being trifling-(yes I’m a Southern girl-an old Southern girl 🤓). I have noticed GW charges almost $5 for a shirt. Do you get a yard of useable fabric from a shirt? Quilting cotton is around $13 a yard, and if you carefully watch sales, you can get it for $9 or $10, and I have gotten it for less. I wonder if thrifting is truly a significant savings. You certainly know more than I do about it, so I am anxious for your insight.

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  Год назад +1

      I do get close to a usable yard (and often far more, depending on the size of the shirt) out of most shirts. I think of it this way, the back is about a fat quarter, the 2 fronts are about a fat quarter, and the sleeves together are about a fat quarter (if it's long sleeved.) Anything XL and over are even more. A fat quarter is typically $3.25 or more---so there is already a savings at $5 for a whole shirt. Is it ALWAYS more cost effective? Possibly, but probably not. But the benefits of having unique fabrics and reusing perfectly good fabric are enough to make it worth it for me.🤓😊

    It was illuminating to go shopping with you. I too am finding it difficult to find fabrics that are not polyester or spandex. Despite your having picked out armloads of stuff, you are quite picky, and you know your stash. It would make an interesting video to see you break down those linen capris.
    BTW, your Goodwill store is so clean, bright and organized--very different from my local Sally.

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  2 года назад

      It is true...I have gotten quite picky! But as you said, it mostly is because I know my stash, I know what I'm looking for, and it's worth waiting for those 100% cotton shirts and linens. And I know from experience that if they are not there "today"--they will be eventually!! Yes, we are lucky that our Goodwill is kept in really good shape! ❤️🤓🤩
      PS I will sometimes use a cotton shirt with a tiny amount of spandex if I REALLY like the color AND pattern AND if it's a reasonably sized (and priced shirt)...basically the stars have to align. 😉😂

I have mens shirt quilts spinning in my head, but am in the middle of another quilt and will complete it before starting a quilt with the mens shirts. They don't hold a crease, and crawl under the sewing needle unless you use a lot of pins. What would be pros and cons of the different fabrics. Also I am hearing a lot about bamboo fabric. I don't buy anything (to wear or sew with) with fabric I don't like the feel and texture of.

      Anita, I have done a video on linen (which explains a lot about linen) and a video about cotton-poly (which explains a lot about cotton-poly) -- you can check both of those out! There are too many fabrics to explain in a comment…perhaps a Google search will give you the additional info you are looking for!👍🏻🤓😊

      @@TheCatBirdQuilts thanks. I'll look for it. I've only been watching a few days. I haven't come across it yet. I love how you explain things. I love that you have a lot to say. I usually do too. 😄
