this is just a great information! my late son-in-law mainly wore polos with collars, so this tutorial gives me clear ideas how to cut them and incorporate collars into the memory quilts I am making for my grandchildren. Thank you!

Thank you Lisa. You saved me! I have 2 mini Kiwi rugby jerseys to include in memory quilts and I had no idea on how to include the collar in the front of the shirt as I made them into blocks. I watched your comprehensive video and made 2 in an afternoon.

Also save the buttons from what you cut off you can use them for embellishing the quilt or for other things.

Lisa do you remove your buttons before longarming ? I run with robotics so that has been a concern of mine.

Hi Kris, anytime I quilted a quilt that included buttons, even after I got robotics on my machine, I always did hand guided quilting to avoid those areas. Last year though, I upgraded the software (QuiltMagine) to the Gold Card, so now I can still use the robotics but include an eclipsed area to avoid going over things like buttons, zippers and such :)
thank you Lisa...one day i will do a t-shirt quilt the only draw back is that i hate cutting them up...hahahahaha...did you find a placement for the collar chain? the logo with the chain is awesome...hmmm maybe in a journal...hahaha
I never did find a "good" place to put the chain on the quilt. I think once you make your first t-shirt quilt.....YOU WILL LOVE IT, and cutting the shirts won't seem so bad hahaaa

Thanks Viv! My iron is a Black and Decker from Wal-mart, I don't know the exact model #.......however...it's the purple one with the extra long cord :)

Please be careful, you have a tendency to put your fingers in front of the presser foot, I had done that and sewed my finger...ouch.

Lisa, I glued all my binding down and realized I had accidentally sewed it to the back, not the front. What do I do now? Sometimes I just don’t think!
Uhhohhhhh :) well, you could pull it to the front and finish it that way...orrrrrrr.....pull it all out and re-sew. I feel your pain as I've done the same!

What do you do with the scraps left from cutting up the shirts? Is there a way to reuse them for something else?
Hi Nancy! I have a friend who makes t-shirt quilts and she gets pillow cases from thrift stores and stuffs the scraps into those to make doggie beds for shelters :) I use mine to stuff little pillow projects like this: ruclips.net/video/LEFS-1Nzs6ct/видео.htmlhey also make great cleaning rags :)
Good morning my long distance friend! I forgot to ask when sewing sweatshirts what seam allowance do you use!
Hello Lovely!!!!! Hope you are well :) I always keep the same 1/4 inch seam allowance no matter the garment. You could certainly use a desired seam allowance, but I wouldn't do anything less than 1/4 :)
Lisa Capen Quilts I’m fine and hope you are doing great. I just finished a T-shirt quilt with a lot of heavy football shirts and sweatshirts. I used a scant 1/4” but think next time I will use the full quarter. Very bulky in the seams. I had a problem with my Pellon P44 sticking in places. I’m very careful with ironing it on. I used muslin over it when pressing, maybe I’m just not leaving my iron on it long enough. I will post 2 of my T-shirt quilts I’ve made on your FB page so you can see. Thanks to you! Did you press the shirt? Before cutting it.
I did not press the shirt before separating the front from the back. I do all of my pressing when adding the interfacing. I think you certainly could press it before :)
Why not just use the whole neck line, a d remove whats not needed.
I'd love to see if you've done that, how it turns out :) sounds like a good idea
