  • For this project, I took seventeen shirts from the wardrobe of my friend's late father, cut them up and designed them to make five quilts. I haven't finished them all, but I'm presenting the first completed one here with the steps that I used to make it. This was a very simple design, as I explain in the video, as we didn't feel it necessary to show off mad quilting skills.
    Music:
"Under My Oak Tree" by Johannes Bornlof & "Felt Like November" by Magnus Ludvigsson, both courtesy of Epidemic Sound
"Nathalie" by Gilbert Becaud, performed by Chris Lumb and Emily Lumb Gregory

I love this! I currently have 15 shirts that belong to my best friend's husband, and she wants them made into 5 quilt tops for her 5 grandsons. I love the singing session at the end. I have a feeling the shirt he's wearing is one of the ones you used.

Thank you so much for this. Love the ending. I am getting ready to sew a free form quilt centerpiece from my grandparent’s and parent’s clothing as a gift to my brother. I hope to be cutting clothes within the hour. Bless you.

Wow! I was not expecting to meet the person in whose memory you made the quilts. I enjoyed the performance so much!
I have the honor of making several quilts out of about 6 or 7 shirts - all the very same fabric. These were work shirts with lots of oil stains and paint which I will probably incorporate because he worked hard. I am trying to find a pattern and a way to add some color to the quilts since the fabric is striped in blue and gray. I also need to try to get 3 lap quilts out of what I have. If you have an idea, I would love to hear it, but mainly I just wanted to thank you for doing this video. I really enjoyed it. I have been quilting for a long time, but had already decided not to do any fancy quilting because as you said - it isn't necessary. The fabric is what they want to cuddle up with.

I am making memory quilts of my dad for my family. I cut down the shirts but struggling with starting in finding the perfect patterns and it is very emotional. I think I might make the first one with your pattern just to get one done. I am an experienced quilter but it is still so hard to start. Thank you so much for sharing.

Lovely! I’m a straight line quilter. Free motion without a state of the art machine results, at least for me, a hot mess!

I'm needing to make my mom a lap quilt of dads shirts. We just lost him. I don't know how to quilt. What size is the plain squares. And what size do you start with to make the 4 patch? This quilt pattern looks perfect for me. Thank you. How big is a lap quilt?

This is awesome! I just started getting into quilting and I’m thinking of making something like this for my mom (my dad passed away just a few months ago). Could you share where you got the sashing? This is my first time watching someone sew sashing/add a border around the shirt pieces!

Thanks very much and sorry to hear about your dad - hope you're getting on okay.
I got the material for the sashing at a fabric shop in Brighton which has since closed, but it's just a basic white cotton with a little floral paisley print that's visible up close. I bought several meters of it and tear it into strips as needed for each of the quilts. I've finished two and have three more to go!
Good luck with your project. I warn you it takes way more time than you think, so if you're considering as a gift, start now! All the best!!
