Thank you so much for the videos! I worked at McDonald's for 13years and got to visit the Ronald McDonald home in Rochester Minnesota where I decided to start donating quilts and my goal was 100 quilts. I got to 80 and had to have surgeries for carotid arteries and ended up with a heart attack and stroke and lost the vision in my eye from blood clots. With the help of the videos I am back my sewing room and trying to sew again. I may not have perfect seams but its okay! And some beautiful women made the last 20 quilts to make my goal! I hope you all know how much you help people and the pre cut fabric takes a lot of pressure off my husband! My next goal is to visit your business! All my thanks to you and your family! Norma Gilman from Viroqua Wisconsin
thank you my father lived to be 94 and went to church every time the doors were open.. he has so so so many ties and shirts... I'm going to do one of these for my only daughter..awesome
How did I miss this tutorial! We received a pillow made from one of my father's shirts. To this day, it's been a source of comfort for my daughter and I. I recently saw a RUclips video about burial quilts. It sounded morbid at first, but they were from a part of the country that people aren't usually buried in a casket. This man would make a quilt with the person's family members to wrap their loved one in, casket or not. He also made beautiful memory quilts, usually wall hangings, for the family. It turned out to be very comforting, just like our pillow. 😊❤
I made a pillow from my dads Pendleton with buttons on front and pockets. Gave it to my mom. My mom now lives with us she will be 90 this year she holds it and sleeps with it. She said it was the best present she ever received. The smile on her face was priceless😇 My husband retired in 94 and has about 70 ties now I'm going to make him a quilt. Thank you for that pattern. Happy New Year to you all😊
Lots of great ideas. I actually made a flannel rag quilt using a friend's deceased husband's flannel shirt along with complimentary flannel fabrics. She wanted a lap quilt she could snuggle with while drinking her morning coffee. She loved it. I felt honored that she asked me to make it for her.
Thanks Jenny. I lost my husband of 55 years recently and didn' know how to recycle his more worn out clothes. Now I have a great new project! Happy New year to you and all at MS! Sue Largen.
55yrs! Oh, I’m so sorry. Try and make yourself at least a little pillow to hug like Jenny did. Wish I was able to do it for you. Hugs from a fellow quilter, xo.
Thank you Jenny. I hope you, your family, friends & all at MSQC have a wonderful 2018. I use mens shirts to make quilts for the male residents of nursing homes, many are given to me by dear friends or I buy from op shops(I think you call them thrift shops). It's more difficult to find 'male' material especially for elderly gentlemen. I'd hate to think how many I've made, its's so wonderful to see the love & appreciation the quilts get. Many folks don't have very many loved ones or visitors & receiving a quilt is a reminder that someone cares. You taught me to quilt..... so thank you & please know how much your goodness is paid forward, this is my way of paying it forward. Thank you. Much love from Hobart, Tasmania (Australia) to Hamilton, Missouri.
What a lovely caring person you are, Jenny. The cushion/pillow is such a wonderful idea - sure to help anyone needing comfort in a time of grief. Best wishes and happy new year to you and your family.
I make a lot of memory quilts for people. They are a pleasure to make. Wish I could show you some of them!! Thank you for sharing your videos with us!! I look forward to them on Fridays!!
I'm glad to see you do this simple way of making memory items. I have been using my husband's ties and shirts (and sometimes bit of his pants) for my own comfort- mostly doing paper piecing as I am using articles that he wrote as my paper. This is a quick and easy tutorial.
This is perfect! When my Dad died he left behind tons of ties and I've always wanted to do something with them. I can see what all my siblings and the grandkids are getting for Christmas next year! Thanks Jenny
Thank you Jenny. Watched right about midnight New Year 2018. Mom passed a few days after Valentines day 2017. I didn't know what to do with her clothes. My sister asked me to make a memory quilt from her favorite clothes which got me interested in quilting again. God Bless You for this video. Happy New Year!
Hi Jenny hope you and all family and staff at msqc have a health and happy new year .i hope you know you bring joy to me and so many others around the world .please please don't stop .god bless.
So thankful that I found, (or that Lord brought this up) for me. I have a friend that's husband has pass away. Going to make her a lap quilt and a pillow from her husbands shirts for her birthday this year.
Thanks so much-I wish I saved my sons clothes he passed 1993 at 19 yrs. old I wasn't sewing at the time. My other son passed at 43 years old in 2013- I never knew about this memory sewing- it's great and the tie runner is so cute. Pat
Happy New Year Jenny, family and all at MSQC! Looking forward to all the coming Fridays :) Best Day of the Week!!! Thank You for sharing your love of quilting.
Thank you Jenny. I sure do wish I had known how to do this when my father passed 5 years ago. He had lots of shirts and ties. I will keep this in mind for others who need the memory lap quilt. Happy New Year.
Happy New Year!!🎆🎊!!!! My first quilt was a memory quilt of sorts. I made it for my friends daughter for her 2nd birthday. I made it from all of her receiving blankets and a few burp cloths and a couple of pieces pf new flannel too. She still sleeps with it.
I really like the idea of the tie table runner. I will try to grab some clothes of my Grandmother’s to make something for my Mom, uncles and aunt. Thank you for sharing!
Wow, what a wonderful video! I loved the runner with the ties. Unfortunately my Dad has been gone for many years and I no longer have any of his clothes, but my husband has an abundance of ties that he never wears, and the gears in my head are turning! Thanks for this unexpected little bonus!
Happy New Year to you, your family and everyone at MSQC. My aunt had done one for my other aunt when her dad passed away for her mother. She appreciated it very much. Thank you for this tutorial.
TY for this sweet video. I have so many items to cut from to make many memory quilts. I plan to combine many who have passed away into pillows and quilts and pass to our family. Love all your videos and I get your Block color awesome books!
Happy New Year Jenny and the entire Doan family. To the MSQC crew Happy New Year. Loved this tutorial it's been needed for so many of us. Thanks for all you do. Love hugs and kisses to have all...Stay warm. Somebody left the refrigerator door open its freezing down here in Florida.
Oh Jenny, I do so enjoy your videos and lessons!!! "...it's adhesed into place..." oh sure, someone else would have said glued, but no...you come up with your own words!!!! :-) I do love it. My mother was a seamtress...used few pins...taught us well. Thank you for keeping the "craft" going!
Thanks for such an informative tutorial. I have a red sweater my mother wore every Christmas and now I can make a pillow from it as it's starting to get ratty. And including a blouse of mine into the quilts I want to make for my three children is a great idea! I can call them "A Piece of Me" quilts.
I've made a cushion from a favourite shirt, I used the button front as the back of the cushion to allow the cushion pad to be put in or taken out to wash the cover. It works really well!
Thank you for sharing this. I want to make something from my husband’s Air Force uniforms for my kids, and this helped me with that. (He retired after 29 years and a few months.) Your videos are so awesome and helpful!
Happy New Year! I have made many quilts from tees, or from the clothes of departed loved one. Recently, I made a baby quilt (I have 15 great-nieces and -nephews) out of my old dress shirts. Your video was the first thing I watched--a great way to bring in the New Year!
🎉Happy New Year Jenny and the entire MSQC family 🎉 Wishing you all all the very best in 2018 with love from 🇨🇦 Thank you for the great tutorial ! I especially love the pillow. You have made such a wonderful difference in my life...I am so grateful ❤️
Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville uses shirts in her piecing A LOT! It's good to see that it's catching on:) I get shirts from the local thrift store for 50 cents each.
Thank you so much for this. My niece and I have been talking about making a quilt from my sister (her mother's) clothing. This gives us a starting place. Love you tutorials. I've learned so much. Thanks again and happy new year!
I LOVE working with men's cotton shirts! I started using them for memory quilts, but now I haunt thrift stores - the XXXL shirts are usually the same size as the L and there's SEW much more fabric!
Jenny, after my husband passed away, I made every grandchild a pillow from shirts. One special thing I added was a laminated picture of each child in the pocket for that child.
So...does this mean that Friday will fall on Monday in 2018? JK! Thanks for the fun surprise MSQC! Happy New Year to Jenny and all the Doan family and all the good folks in Hamilton, Mo!
Thank you for your tutorials, I've learned a lot from you! I made a quilt and a pillow from shirts for my husband some years ago! A happy New Year for you and your family from Germany!🍀😸
What a lovely surprise to find a new tutorial on here from you! I am home soooooo sick (pneumonia) and there is nothing to watch on tv so went on youtube and this is the first thing that came up! Thank you so much! Happy New Year to you and your family!
make sure you check the material of the tie. Polyester ties often melt under a hot iron which would be upsetting on multiple fronts. The tie blocks would make a nice border on a memory quilt if there is enough of them or maybe a center panel.
Happy New Year!! Thank you for this tutorial. My husband has a lot of ties he no longer uses. You’ve made it very easy to use up the ties. Hmmm, I’m thinking of a lap tie quilt. 😀
Happy New year to you and yours! You all do such a wonderful job with new ideas for us to quilt. I just had someone ask me the other day to make one for them. I suggested that they put some of their clothes with the ones that represented that special someone and they would be together always. They loved that idea. Best wishes to you in the New year!
I made my first quilts using clothing from my mother in law after she died. We were giving clothing to nursing homes, etc and I said to my sister in law that I should make a quilt from these clothes. She thought it was a good idea. I called a lady who I had met through my mother in law and she agreed to show me how. Since I have always sewn I had lots of fabric besides her clothes. I only had 7 shirts by the time I thought to do that. Anyway she got me started and I have never quit. I made to date approximately 10 quilts that have some of her clothing in. My kids each got a quilt no I did also using the nine patch block. I have made a log cabin, snowball, grandmas fan, etc. I still have a few blocks left. I had originally cut the clothes into 3 1/2 blocks so when I wanted to make the grandmas fan blocks I had to sew some together to make them big enough. I love the memory quilts. I have made small🤣☺️
