Well, actually, this song is about the singer's older brother that died right before Ghost became famous. He was his idol, father figure, best friend. For example "He will lead the way into the void" = he died first. He spoke about it on a Swedish radio show last year. The fact that the lyrics can be about both the devil and his brother makes this song even more genious.
I was going to comment this myself... but I will just add to your comment. As you're probably more likely to read it than them or anyone else... haha.
The song has its usual Ghost undertones... originally for their second album it was titled "She Is"... but was changed and put on the third album. "Special Ghoul" said the song was written [the chorus] about the singer's brother (who died suddenly of natural causes) and [rest of the lyrics] about a friend of the band who died by suicide. The bother introduced Tobias to all the things he loves now ... musically (so this is a younger brother 'worshiping' an older brother-just as you stated) and the friend who died wasn't a 'very close one, but one they felt very connected with anytime they were together.' basically the song is about loss and how one views it. The friend who died by suicide was a 'true Satanist'... so I find the line "He will lead the way into the void" the true view that Tobias has about the afterlife... there is nothing. No Hell like this one friend would have been expecting. No Heaven. Just a void.
It naturally goes in Ghost's "complicated roundabout way" of making it true to the bands real message. Any religion is deception. This song can easily be sung by a church choir and people will see it as being about 'god' but its the ghost persona that make the message appear more sinister. This theme of 'deception' is explored further in the music video... they really have to watch Ghost for what it is... a full act: musically and visually.
Rin Lehtisaari Ghost is just a brilliant concept, so self aware and so perceptive to the world. So rich in symbolism with complex and dynamic meaning. To me, I think it's obvious that they think about their art as communication. They make it so that the reaction and the meaning that others perceive in their art becomes a part of their artwork. For many bands their music is about self expression, talking about their personal experiences or their own attitudes and if others can relate, that's fine but it's self centered compared to how Ghost make music. It is beautiful satire and intellectual poetry - musically, visually, lyrically and conceptually.

Proclaiming to be a Christian doesn't really mean anything anyway. Christians can and will interprete things in wildly different ways. Like lots of people, they just adopt their parents' beliefs or subscribe to religion based on arbitrary reasons. Heck, loads of Christians don't even bother reading the bible. Not that I think they should, but I just think the notion that Christians are united is hilarious. The only way they're united is in their folly.

I'm Christian and ghost is my favorite band. Why do so many Christians have issues with separating a fictional act with reality? Ghost is not just a band but a story. There's a time line of front men from the different papa Emritius to Cardinal Copia. It's a kick ass modern metal Broadway show.
I can, as a fellow Christian, understand others reluctance to listen to Ghost. They do come off as genuinely Satanic. However, I have seen interviews with several members of the band that make me question if they really are. That aside I like the band and even if they are actually worshiping Satan I would like to think that I can listen to and like a song without God damning me to an eternity in hell. If that were the case then pretty much everyone is screwed. That would be like watching a horror film about a demon and being told you were going to hell.

"Nostra dis pater" is "Our Father of Wealth". It's a reference to a roman deity of the Underworld. "Nostra Alma Mater" is literally "Our Nuturing Mother" (Which is why people refer to their former schools that way), and is being used to indicate how Satan helps you grow/improve (In the context of the song). Interpreting the latter as a sort of dualistic male/female dynamic is also possible ala some occult traditions.

Tobias gave an interview about this song and it was originally about a woman... she is and was in Italian... it’s one of their original songs and they could never work it into previous albums... the song progressed to HE IS and there is some allusion to a friend that committed suicide. Like most of their songs... really not about Satan at all.

But when two people go into depth and discuss the lyrics and try to find the meaning of them like they have in this one and countless others, to me that's not being triggered. Some Catholics/Cristians I know would not even bother listening or trying to understand and would just be pissed and throw it away, that to me is being triggered.

Ghost has some of the most beautiful and elegant songs out there! I'm a Christian and Ghost is a band that should be a classic, they're really talented!

First time viewer here. Hey, you gave it your best. I get it. I'm a Christian also and even though I love Ghost now, they can be a bit much at times. It took me a little while to fully 'get' Ghost too.
The reality is that Ghost truly isn't an evil, subversive act pulling souls to Hell on a golden highway. You'd have to read and hear some of Tobias Forge's interviews to fully grasp Ghost. The most revealing ones are the ones he gives back home in his native Sweden. He tries to keep his US audience in the dark as much as possible because he's learned Americans prefer the mythology to the reality.
'He Is' has a verrrrry long, complex history. It's inspired musically by trashy Italian and Spanish musicals. It was a song he worked on for years before he finally got it right. Lyrically he finally got it to where he was happy with it when one of his mentors, Salim from the band Devil's Blood, committed suicide. But the chorus is actually about his older brother, a former punk rock guitarist in Sweden, who tragically died of an unknown heart disease when he was only in his late 30s. Because his older brother was his father figure, and his role model responsible for getting him into rock music and playing instruments, his dead brother is who he is thinking of when he says "He is insurrection, He is spite, He is the force that made me be"
So as much as it may seem that 'He' is Satan, 'He' is actually his dead friends, mentors, and family members responsible for encouraging him to hone his craft and become the successful rock star he is today.

@ the difference between Hades and Satan is Hades is merely an overseer for all spirits. The underworld composed of Elysium (heaven) Asphodel (purgatory) and ... Tartarus (hell, although the mythology is disputed that Tartarus may be it's own place, a home for demons and monsters, and mortal hell elsewhere in the underworld) but the point is, Hades wouldn't directly punish people like the biblical Satan, nor directly reward them like God, rather a bureaucracy of lower class gods, demons and a few privileged mortals

BIG recommendation with future Ghost reactions -- you two need to watch either LIVE versions or official VIDEO of their songs when reviewing. This will give a huge insight into what the thrust of what the song meaning and lyric "ACT--UALL--YEE" is (or at least what they claim they want to present as the focus)! In some cases the subtle lyrical section is illuminated in an even more blatant twist, same with their performances. This is something you don't really get from a simple lyric video or music only version; Ghost is very visual with their presentation.

VinAnd Sori I was wondering why you didn’t watch the music videos, at _least_ from where you’re sitting if you can’t show the stuff on screen in the videos. The music videos are meant to be companions to the songs. Most of the fans that “correct” you (although Ghost fans can be snobbish, this coming from one) are doing so because the band’s message and shtick are obviously are in good fun if you look at it the way the band meant to present it.
We got spooked one time Bc we attached an official vid and RUclips blocked it. Now I will say that never happened with ghost, so the next time, we’ll try for them. It’s seems more than most bands the visuals and the vids are attached pretty close to the lyrics
i'm pretty comfortable agreeing with sixstringpsycho on that one, lol. were i to make something of a comparison, i would say they're more Alice Cooper than Marilyn Manson. we all know Alice Cooper isn't *actually* hanging/dismembering himself or eating dead babies. some of my christian friends who are also fans of good music were really hesitant to like ghost, would say things like "i really don't want to like them, i almost hate to admit that i enjoy their music" and then when they saw the band, they were blown away by how good their performances actually are. i've won a few converts that way, lol. it's all meant in fun. sacrilegious, tasty fun.
Generally, I would say this is a bad idea. But when it comes to Ghost... they’re a live act. Period. Just as tight on the stage as in the studio.
The whole thing about Ghost is that the satanism thing is just an act, they aren't genuinely against religion either. It's just for show. I'm a Christian and I personally love their songs to death because I realize that they aren't being serious, it's fun fictional music.

I have read that interview, and nothing about it really contradicts that they're theatrically making fun fictional music without being genuine satanists or against religion. If anything, he states very much to affirm such a thing once again as in all his previous interviews.

As an agnostic it's always funny to see Vin's reaction to something that doesn't "fit" his view of religion. He's so unease and not comfortable at all. Sori is just like "I like this song" and all that, but Vin is like... "No... I don't ... nope ... good song and, but...".
It's 2020 March and I wonder why would a God allow such a virus to spread all over the world. Since the first time I heard this song, I thought you could "Flip" a couple of lines and make it one of the best Christian Rock songs ever.

I am a Christian, have played in a few praise bands, and I'm disturbed that recent Christian music seems so commercial and a lot like the same dribble you'd hear on Top 40 stations. It feels like it has no soul. This song, though I don't agree with the message, is well written and beautiful. Please don't question your faith because of lousy music. I'd love to find a Christian rock band that wrote and conveyed a message as well as Ghost does, but that won't make me change what I believe
I should have been a little more clear, I guess. I have been questioning my faith for around a year now... questions that no one has the answer to and that have actually gotten me in trouble with my church.

hybridamerica im literally having the same experience as you, but on the oppossite side of the coin. My faith didnt really exist for a long time, and ive been a fan of ghost a long time. But recently ive started beleiving in god because ive seen my spirit guide/guardian angel. And ive honestly had a heart to heart with god and the universe through meditation. Now i almost feel guilty for loving ghost, and im having some conflicting emotions about seeing ghost in person. I still really want to. But now through my awakening, it almost feels wrong, because i only want to attract positive energy. Yet somehow ghost still feels like a positive energy and theyve done so much for me. But a part of me says its negative. I just dont know what to do.
Keep in mind, i havnt read the bible, and my beleif in god mostly came to me through intuition, and through positive intentioned meditation. Im still pretty lost as to whats right. I need to justify this almost to be okay with loving them. Because rn it almost feels like an affair. Personally, id just like to talk with ghost

Yet, if I'm honest with myself, I have to admit that nothing has once happened to me that can not be explained naturally.
I feel as if I am stepping back and getting a clearer perspective. This adoration of Satan makes me think about Genesis and who really told the truth in that garden. God - from the start was hiding information from his creation... God - in fact, if he were perfect, ... why would he create in the first place and then... on top of all of it - have his creation rebel against him??? Nothing makes sense anymore.
What's wrong with the message? It's actually a tribute to his brother who died of heart failure, he even spoke about it on a radio station and confirmed it. It's just very intelligently written to keep in fitting with their theme and to imply a different meaning.

Atheist, and former Pentecostal Christian here. Everything that follows is just how I view things.
1) Their Lyrics are absolutely fine, because Satan is a myth, Hell is a myth, just as the Abrahamic God is a myth.
2) IMHO if Satan was real and operated through anything, it would be through human greed, through Mammon, and he'd be doing a really, really good job.
3) There is a such a thing as nothingness when it comes to consciousness. For each of us, there was nothing before we were born; we didn't exist. After we die, we return to that proverbial void of non-existence. Furthermore, just because you cannot conceptualize a thing, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, or that its an invalid idea.
4) Black/Darkness is not a color. Because a black object absorbs all the colors of the visible spectrum and reflects none of them to the eyes.
5) The Bible is filled with contradictions. You obviously disagree, but it remains true, regardless, no matter how many cartwheels of logic that Christian theologians have to perform to try to explain them away.
6) Spitefulness is indeed irrational. However, it can be easily argued that if you have a deep religious faith that leads you to deny facts, then that faith is irrational.
7) Vin is absolutely correct that cutting people out of your life doesn't also mean that you are holding a grudge. You can quite rationally cut toxic people out of your life without holding an active grudge against those people.
8) While Catholics are indeed good at guilt, they hardly hold a monopoly on it. As a former Pentecostal Christian, I had to work through a ton of guilt that my upbringing foisted upon me.

Tobias has said in interviews that this song was written for his brother who inspired him to make music and passed away very young (the verse) and his wife (the rest of the song). The song was going to be named lei è (italian for she is). Of course ghost like leaving things up to interpretation but it's important to point out that they chose to interpret it like that!!!

I went to thier Houston concert a few months ago. And I'm going to see them again in a couple months. I'm a god fearing man...but to me, a good band is a good band. I don't take them litteral and I'm more into the rythm and guitars than the devil stuff. They ARE in a way moving away from that a little.

Autumn Sunset let me tell you something...I have been to a few concerts in my day...but in that hall in Houston, when MIASAMA played...the bass fucking almost tore the building down! And when you shut your eyes and let that song take you, there is no Satan or bad shit if it already isn't in you, it's pure vibe music that went straight to your being and ROCKED IT.

The song writing and orchestration in this song is fantastic. The arrangement of the whole song is brilliant. Sori is exactly like my wife. She has a love/hate relationship with this band. Loves the music because of how well it is presented but the lyrics freak her out. You should soon do their new song Dance Macabre, Ill be dammed if you dont listen to this song and dance your ass off.

I'm an atheist. I know, it's kind of a meme that you'll know someone is an atheist, because they'll make sure to tell you. Well, it's an important detail for the context of this story. I discovered Ghost around the time that they toured North America with Iron Maiden. This was just a couple years ago in 2016. I lost my faith a few years before that. I'm actually glad that I had never heard of them before that, because if I had I would have absolutely hated them for being satanic. I would have seen it as some anti-christ brainwashing material if I found them when I was still a true blue believer. Not having any belief in a god (or satan), I only see their music as art, inspired by the concept of satanism. Not the LaVeyan satanism, which doesn't claim belief in a literal devil, but actual theistic satanism. Being from a largely atheist populated country, I suspect they don't ACTUALLY believe the stuff they're writing about. I think they want to make good music. In interviews, they have said they like to provide a religious experience through their music, and they even call their concerts "rituals." I think this just further feeds into the shtick they have. They're dedicated to it.

Triggered by a song that is (now) about Tobias’ brother, and primarily by the word Lucifer. As ‘He Is’ was intended to be ‘She Is’ - as in regards to Forge’s wife - the word Lucifer is Latin for Venus, makes sense, but in terms of his brother, Lucifer also translates to ‘light bringer’, too. Some religious types really do look too deep into things that they “think” will offend their faith. To be honest I find it laughable and cringeworthy. Here’s hoping that Ghost continue to trigger these mindless people for years to come. Hail Lucifer!😉

I love the song n I'm Agnostic n I would never think it was something other than reffering to Satan cuz of the video. Being christian doesnt have anything to do with it and I was introduced to the band as it being about the Devil n stuff so I really dont think anyone without being told it's about his brother/wife would get it.

Great reaction. The "world in flames" is a theme throughout the album (Meliora), kind of a "hell on earth" type deal. The last song on the album even goes "The world is on fire, and you are here to stay and burn with me" (Deus in Absentia). Their first album was about the coming of the Antichrist, the second was about his arrival, and the third (this one) was about hell on earth, basically. The new one is about death.

Hey there! Ex-Christian here, current atheist, not a satanist, but a pretty big Ghost fan. Normally not a big fan of RUclips "reactions", but I love your discussions on Ghost songs. Gives perspective to people like me on how persons with different sets of beliefs see stuff like this. I agree that the Ghost fan base can be *very* "well, actually!" but I also do see that the bands tongue is planted firmly in its cheek with content like this, aiming primarily to be theatrical the same way a horror movie does. I'm personally attracted to the band because I find their songs very catchy, reminiscent of Blue Oyster Cult even. The Satan stuff doesn't bother me as I don't believe Satan exists. Just wanted to give my perspective on the band and to say that I very much appreciate hearing yours. I'll definitely be back next time you two do another Ghost discussion :)

I don't know if anyone else brought this up or not but it would have been good to watch the actual music video (you would have to had censor it at a couple of points though). In the music video they do a scene as one of those fake faith healers that put their hands on peoples heads and they shake to the ground. If you still have not seen that video watch it. The lyrics work even better in both regards with that video.

I think you *almost* got the point of the song. You really need to see the video. This song was meant to be a parody of Christian rock, and in the video he does a parody of Jim Jones. If for those of us who don't believe in Satan, we all still except that there are bad people who try to convince their victims that they are great people. Jim Jones convinced people that he was their ticket to salvation, and they were all murdered as a result.
I’m going to be honest, I did not expect a lot out of this video when it began, but I’m glad I stuck with it. I am a huuuge Ghost fan, and one of the things I love most about them is the way their music, particularly lyrics, make people feel and react and it also gives you a lot to think about. I enjoyed the points and views here. 😊

Most people undoubtedly listens to Ghost primarily for the music. The clever lyrics and such is just a creative bonus.
Forge, the main man, has stated though that he had a spell with Satanism in his troubled youth. He might still be somewhat into it, but I think it's clear it's mostly for the image/show.
Their sound is my favorite thing about Ghost. I'm a big classic rock and metal guy, so I don't really listen to new stuff (outside of Ghost). Ghost's sound to me is like an homage to so many classic bands.

My favorite part of Ghost is the many different perspectives. I've heard an interpretation of the song being about the physical sun, about the Satan, about his brother. It's crazy but it works. Tobias is a genius and please react to some of his interviews with LoudWire or some of the radio interviews in Sweden. It'll be an eye opener 😉

The Devil’s Blood’s mastermind and overall fantastic musician, Selim Lemouchi. And he also played with Watain, and was a close friend to Erik Danielsson.
It has a dual meaning for him, he said the chorus is about his brother (who passed away) and the rest of the song is about a friend (the guy you are talking, I guess)
At the same time, is about having faith in a force that will catch you when you die or something like that
