Papa is a satanist. Tobias is not. However, Tobias has said that the way he absorbed the devil is in the pop culture sense, as joy, fun, free expression, all the things christianity, especially the oppressive versions of it, assigns to "evil." Ghost is a response to that type of propaganda by the power structures of theism. They are the flip side of that. Think of them like a counterpunch to the thousands of years of people dictating how certain people get to live their lives because... well, because.

Once upon a time, Our Guy was dating his future wife. She was fond of a certain style of smarmy Italian love songs, so OG wrote this song for her, and called it "She Is". Then he put it on the shelf for many years. One day a musician friend/acquaintance of OG committed suicide. He pulled the song out, wrote new lyrics and included on Meliora.
On the surface the song is a hymn to Satan, however, in an interview he stated the verses are about the musician, and the chorus is about his brother Sebastian. I love all the layers of Ghost. This song resonates on more than one level, and in personal ways for me. I find the video both compelling and hysterically funny, one of their best and a true classic
Such a joy to watch Asaf laugh, and Itai "get the joke" thanks for a great reaction guys!

Thank you. A truly awesome song. If you play back your *own* video (this one) frame by frame from 6:55 you will catch one frame of one of one of the targets of this super clever song.
I'm constantly amazed at how Tobias digs out obscure theological imagery and uses it. If you want to be truly hypnotised, check out *Monstrance Clock.* Ghost used to end every set with it, despite it being very slow. If you hear it, you'll understand why, it's so hypnotic. What's a Monstrance Clock, I hear you ask? Well, it is a thing, in the medieval Catholic church, but it makes a great title for a song. And the song itself is so haunting, it's been following me around for days.

    Good one again, guys 🙂
This, being one of my favorite songs from Ghost, has so many layers and aspects to it. Both lyrics and song are just great, and still gives me chills, even today. The pinnacle of the song for me is the return to the chorus and the line "The disobedience that holds us together". I think you are spot on
Fun fact: Song was written in 2007, had all Italian lyrics, and had the title "Lei e".. which in Italian means "She is" 🙂
Was supposed to be included on the Infestissumam, but they decided to take it out, due to the fact that it did not "fit" into the mood and feel of the album. It resurfaced again in pre-production of the Meliora album, and was successfully added there.
Until next one 🙂 if you have Ghost.. you have everything..

In my opinion, I think the "He" spoken of in this song is not God/Satan, but the Priest/Pastor/Reverend/Minister. 'He Is' the one who is wielding 'the power' to put them in a trancelike state. 'He Is' the charismatic one they adore. 'He Is', actually, the one with the perceived power to heal. 'He Is' the one they trust, and open their mouths for & allow to be submerged underwater. (BTW. The sexual inuendo is brilliant because not unlike a charismatic frontman in a someone's favorite band, a charismatic clergyman has groupies, too, that would love to be 'touched by the spirit'.). When they go to church they're, actually, joyful and excited not necessarily to worship God, per se, but to see their true 'love', the charismatic clergyman, perform 'His' show and to be in 'His' presence. That's my take..

This is another great song from the wryly subversive Tobias Forge. To me, this song has always had multiple layers. It is, of course, an indictment of the extremes of some organized religions and most cults, and their leaders - Jim Jones to David Koresh to Sun Myung Moon to Charles Manson. What I find fascinating is that he seems to lump Satan in with all these other cult leaders. Blindly following Satan will also just lead to the void.

If you consider that most Satanists, including myself, are athiests who recognize Satan as a literary figure who was a rebel against authority, Tobias certainly fits the bill of a follower of the Satanic Temple's 7 tenets.

  • @Britton_Thompson
    @Britton_Thompson Год назад +4

Well, no, it's not about Satan actually. He's certainly taking symbolism and imagery associated with the devil, but the song is actually his personal tribute to his dead older brother who taught him everything about rock n roll, and showed him how to play guitar. The fallen "rebel" figure may seem like Lucifer on the surface, but every word is actually referring to his dead brother who was a hometown punk rock icon. Since he considers his brother the personification of the rebellious punk rock ethos, and just youthful mischief overall, he is the actual subject of 'He Is', not Lucifer or Satan.
But Tobias is certainly clever, though. He knows how to stoke his audience at the same time he's performing a soulful ballad to a lost loved one without anyone ever being the wiser!

Hey guys :). Im from Sweden and so is Tobias Forge. We have long been agnostic in Sweden. Yes we are chrsistian officially but we are more secularised than faithly bound. Here in Sweden we had faith healing going on on tv very basicaly copied from USA religious cultist tv by using healing by touching etc. . So as ive guessed Tobias Forge is probably a agnostic and making fun of religion HOWever this song is about something else entirely :) .

Oh the meaning is very wholesome - at least if you interpret it from an actual satanist perspective
I know ghost exagerates the topic and plays into the "dark and evil" vibes in other songs but in satanism, Satan is used as a metaphor of tolerance, religious freedom, equal rights and empathy. Therefore he can as well be seen as "the shining and the light".
Clarification: Satanists do not believe in Satan as a diety, they don't even believe in the supernatural. Satanism is an atheistic religion (and one of the most wholesome religions imo)
