Well, musically, they are just as good live. I think Tobias has some understandable issues with his prosthetics when singing live.
I have heard that The song is about his formal band mates and the lawsuit. And that they are Rats. But it can be both.

His masks has gotten better over the years. Now you can barely tell it's a mask. Their live shows are very entertaining, Tobias is a great showman.
So many great tunes. *Cirice* is iconic. If you choose the evil *Year Zero,* choose a live performance (my favourite is from Hellfest 2016). Also, *Square Hammer,* *Call Me Little Sunshine* (the official video is great, but a shortened single version). Also, the beautiful *He Is,* the heavy *Mummy Dust,* the fabulous show opener *Kaisarion.*
These recommendations are perfect. Great lineup for an introduction to the band. I just hope the guys see this.

Might I suggest their song Mummy Dust if you want a little bit of their rougher side. Cirice if you want the Grammy winner. Year Zero if you want their evil side (tongue in cheek, of course). Variety of hard rock. And if you want to see live...the Mary on a Cross live in Tampa is pretty accurate. One of the best shows I've ever seen (only band I've seen four times).
Prequelle (the album) is a theme album based on the black plague. So Rats is obviously about the rats that spread the disease. But it's also a reflection of modern society where bullying has moved from the workplace or schoolyard to internet and social media. That's why he sings they still coming after you since you can't get away from the power of social media and modern phones. They can get into your home and life 24 hours a day in just a few clicks on the computer or phone.
After three reactions it's also time to welcome the both of you to our family. You know if you have Ghost you have everything ❤️
You HAVE to experience Ghost live if you haven't. They are seriously the most incredible. High energy, dancing, costume changes, EVERYTHING. They call it the Ritual. And it's worth every single penny. I go every time they come to town.
Dance Macabre is another great one
That ending riff is so so good, makes me excited whenever the song comes on shuffle.

I have seen them 5 times in concert. He sounds great. The mask doesn't affect his sound at all.

Tobias had a professional dancer do the dance sequences in this video. I saw Ghost live in August and the concert was amazing, they sounded great.
This is but one of the many brilliant things about the mask-even over face paint. Papa (or Cardinal) can be anyone, so he can do just about anything. Plus, it allows Tobias to be in two places at once, so Ghost can do more. It’s a stroke of genius.

Guys, GUYS: Ghost just released a new compilation called "13 Commandments". You might have heard a bunch of those songs but they used the chance to release one of their best songs that was originally an obscure B-side, the song is called Zenith and I highly suggest you react to it. You will not be disappointed.

My buddy told me that Ghost is like Scooby Doo metal. I will never get that comparison out of my head now 😂.
Funfact.. Ghost has a massive lore that surround the band. Among all the lore details, stories and explanations is the alleged story of Ghosts first gig. This was in the US, at The Whiskey A Go-Go bar on Hollywood's Sunset Strip. Ghost was an up and coming band, with a young Papa Emeritus Nihil on lead vocal. They were supporting Teri Reid and Spooky Tooth, and they performed their 2 new songs from their first single titled "7 inches of satanic panic", namely "Kiss The Go Goat" and "Mary On A Cross".
Now.. the Scooby Doo Metal label was used by the naysayers and "true" metal fans of Ghosts first albums that just thought Square Hammer and the way Ghost was taking their sound on the Meliora album was rubbish.. As a little kick on the shin back to these people... When Tobias released "Kiss the Go-Goat" and "Mary On A Cross", he told the story about the alleged gig at the Whiskey A Go-Go bar. He said that the band debuted live on the 13th of September, 1969. Tell your buddy, that this is not a random date that Tobias just chose for this story. Can you guess what else happened on that date?

Ghost are amazing. Saw them live about a year ago in Avicii Arena in Stockholm. They come from Linköping, The largest city here in the Östergötland region 🤘🏻

I saw Ghost with my dad in concert about a year ago, and they sang this song. The singer sounds extremely clear through the mask and yes he does boogie hard!

Love me some ABBA Black Sabbath! The Prequelle era has so many great songs! If you want a hell of a show, they are a must see live. He sings perfectly live with the mask. Great band to deep dive into!

Tobias' voice does sound a little different in live shows but not hugely, and the mask has gotten a lot better over the years and he's an amazing front man. If you're feeling the heavier stuff i'll echo another commenter about Mummy dust, From the Pinnacle to the Pit and also Con Clavi Con Dio from their early work.

The songs Rats is about something coming and destroying everything quicker than anything you can do to stop it, using Rats and the plague in this as a sort of simile. That is not him dancing it’s a double. All Ghost concerts are just incredible. Ghost is awesome keep going Cirice or Dance Macabre next please or even something from the latest album for a darker sound Call me little Sunshine ❤❤❤

Rats is one of my favorites by Ghost. Love that it has that 80s metal sound with the guitar too.
He is amazing in concert and sometimes he even sounds better live
I will echo what everyone else has said about the rats being society and an unstoppable force coming to destroy society, but there's another layer where the album this comes from is about the Black Plague used as a simile to our current times. Dance Macabre should be next! It's my favorite of theirs and possibly their catchiest tune.
On the CD, Rats into Faith is such a great 1 - 2 punch!!
I don't think there was any formal explanation as to what the rats symbolize. It can be viewed as Social media and the issues that have come from it. Many think that it is a jab at the ex members that brought the lawsuit towards him, and exposed the identity behind the band.
I'd recommend Faith by them, a bit heavier and will get the headbanging going. Year Zero is a great one for a funky any church tune, I'd also recommend Elizabeth or Ritual off their first album, both that are catchy as hell.
Dance Macabre has to be next. Can't wait for that reaction

I'm glad you both decided to go down this rabbit hole. I hope you continue to catch-up on Ghost. There's so many good ones still yet. Call me little sunshine, spillways, darkness of my heart, square hammer, Circe. If you would love to hear more grittiness from him, i suggest crucify or he goes a little harder with year zero. I managed to see Ghost live juuuust before the quarantines happened, and they were legitimately one of the most amazing live shows I've ever seen. If you have the chance, don't hesitate. For next steps, I'd very strongly recommend Square Hammer (official), He Is (official - it's hilarious) and Year Zero.

The Cardinal Copia character was hinted at being associated with death (listen to Witch Image), so the pale horse and it's rider was death.
The imagery of cardinal dancing is mimicking an old painting of the plaque killing everyone while satan dances in the streets
Definitely recommend Faith, Mummy dust, Zenith,Twenties and Respite of the Spitalfields if you're more into the heavier sounding songs, great reaction tho 👏

The back story on rats is based on the legal issues he's been dealing with the former/original band members. It's an absolute burn song aimed at them. The former members are considered the rats in the lyrics.
I’ve seen them 3 times now, from smaller shows to arena. It’s an event…Rosemary’s Baby On Broadway.
This album came after a lawsuit from the previous Nameless Ghouls. They claimed they were not receiving all the pay they had signed for. Tobias claimed they were. They left the band and that was it. The album is basically a diss track after diss track on them for dumping the band
Ghost released this album about the bubonic plague set in modern times in 2018. Their most recent album which is about the fall of empires and world war came out shortly before Russia invaded Ukraine (if I’m remembering correctly). And that album was a year or so delayed due to covid. Honestly I’m nervous about what the theme of their next album will be, Tobias seems to be able to predict the future.

We need to talk about the lore though, it’s the best part, and it makes the albums make more sense. The theatrics and lore really make them more alluring

Great reaction guys!! I love this song...the vibe & groove is SO infectious (just like Rats!!) Ghost is a pure resurrection of glam metal - 70's/80's influences abound, with a slightly 'darker' and more macabre imagery, visuals and lyricism!
Tobias sings just fine with the prosthetic mask on live! This song was bonkers in concert.
Further considerations: Square Hammer (absolute must - esp. if you liked Rats), Cirice, Ghuleh/Zombie Queen, Ritual, Year Zero, Dance Macabre, Witch Image & Miasma (from same album as Rats - the latter is an instrumental - and epically 80's!)

Really happy you guys finally reviewed Rats. It’s one of my favorites songs of theirs with an amazing message about society. Dance Macabre is another similar to this that you would love. The best live video to watch would be Mary on a Cross. That one has good production and really shows how amazing they are live. Cannot wait for the next review, thank you so much guys❤
