My reaction when I first heard this song was EXACTLY the same as yours! I was extremely surprised, and I had just read an article about how Tobias Forge came up with that sound, it was actually inspired by something he saw on a Swedish culture channel, about this Brazilian party music, which he described as a rapper, but was more likely some Brazilian funk artist (we call them "funkeiros" here) given his description. And, being from Brazil myself, specifically from Rio, where funk is the most popular kind of music, I thought I knew what to expect from the song. Well, I couldn't be more wrong, that sound completely blindsided me, it was just a perfect mesh of funk and Ghost, and that's insane, because they're just so different! But I guess that's what Tobias does (and maybe that's what makes Ghost so refreshing), even when you know what to expect, he manages to blow your mind, somehow. And that's what I love about this band, always a great new experience!
I will be amazed if they can pull this off live. This wasn’t even the usual drummer for the studio work, and the solo was done by the guitsrist of Opeth.

Thank you so much for this. Twenties was the one song I had difficulties digesting/processing until I watched this video. It really unlocked something in my brain, and now I love Twenties.
This song like the title states is about the 1920s. The hard beat represents the Industrial Age of machinery moving. The lyrics about raining pennies (the movie "Pennies From Heaven" 1936) and moolah refer to stock market crash in 1928 that brought the Great Depression of the 1930s.
I don't think there's a Ghost song that's been released that I don't like. Tobias Forge is all over the place on the last two albums and I love it. This song has something of a System of a Down vibe in that it's got those weird background vocals and grooving instrumentation. Somehow it all works together very well.
The preparedness for the release of this album has been perfect. If this is all on Tobias, he’s a genius. The tour, the hinting, the quirky vignettes. Simply flawless. As I’ve said on other posts, Tobias is beyond ballsy to take this risk, and to me, paid off…in MOOLAH!
I'm with you on the "old" verse new Ghost, whatever that means (before and after the old members left?) But ive seen many comments stating their not the same, not heavy anymore and not like "such and such" band, well I'm new to Ghost and love all of it, different times of the week I want to hear the earlier releases, other times newer, I don't see any separation and wish people would realize that this happens, call it evolution or what have you, I love it. The more you listen to this album EVERY song grows on you, very well orchestrated. Funny, I remember Metallica cutting their hair and having the same convo years ago lol
Same. Just joined in with the new album and even though I'm not even close to being a metal fan in general, I just couldn't stop listening to them. Every album has its story and it's own atmosphere, sometimes I'm more into the heavier stuff. Faith, cirice, mummy dust, twenties, other days I'm more on the Kaisarion, kiss the go goat, majesty line, sometimes the more "evil" ones aka those that are a little bit more mighty and just epic, going for year zero, ghule/ zombie queen, nocturnal me, deus in absentia( one of my favs) and sometimes just emotional sobbing with Bible, darkness at the heart of my love, he is, life eternal and so on. I love all songs, old ones, and the new songs are just incredible and have so many details. It feels like entering a different world for me. The more I dig into ghost, the more I love them. Call the genre they play what you want, it's just straight up good
saw them in columbus and then immediately bought tickets for their cincinnati show. easily the best band i’ve seen live. super excited to see what this album brings
Saw them on 02/23/2022....and they were the best performance of the night. I was expecting Volbeat to be the headliner, but it ended up being Ghost......and I was not disappointed.
I love that they took the reggaetón beat and created something metal around it. It's absolutely amazing too. TBH their earlier stuff kinda interested me, but this album is something I enjoyed listening to.
Your channel is one of my favs. "THE GAUDY CROSS" is an excellent song I downloaded and your humor is excellent. Would love to see you react to the whole Impera album.
Try with Diablo swing orchestra, you will be surprised, if you liked twenties for the novelty of mixing metal with latin rhythms, DSO does it with much other styles from the region, you will love them
Great review! Really appreciate how you focus a lot on the positive things without making it feel forced. You are using your knowledge and skills to help us appreciate things more while at the same time mixing in critique. I think its a great format for making your videos very easy to digest no matter what opinion I as a viewer have about the song. I also like that you dont dumb it down so much. I know basically nothing about songwriting but you mention something new for me all the time that Im able to look up and learn. Love it.
Got to see them live in Hamburg and it was one of the best nights of my life! I got to be in first row and damn do they make sure you enjoy every second of it! Never had a band this big be this active with the crowd and especially singular people in it. Their music is even better live and they really put on one hell of a show. Can't wait to see them again.
Totally agree with you! Good artist evolve. Tobias got the inspiration from a Brazil musician he saw on swedish tv. Only he could write something like these. Why? Because he is a genious. And yes it's Fredrik. He plays on every song on the upcoming Impera album.
Hey man, I was there last night too. It was absolutely fantastic! Unfortunately the set was quite short, but they’ll be back as headliners after the album is released.
The songwriting is definitely yuge. But yeah, on a more serious note, I absolutely love the marriage of biting satire and the "between the pandemic and the societal unrest it's the Roarin' Twenties again" memes in a song form, complete with 1920s-appropriate visuals and almost operatic touches. Great to see you like this one, too!
What I love is that not only did this album and the previous one take Ghost in a new direction but it was all led by someone outside of the original Papa line bring Cardinal Copia who only gained the status of Papaat the end of their most recent tour. It's symbolic AND awesome
This song is completely bonkers and I love it. I was at the Anaheim show as well and my mind exploded. Not only that but I took a piss next to Steve Vai after the show lol. Great video my friend!
You should hear Tobias talk about how he came up with this song… he was watching a documentary about a rapper playing in a Brazilian Favela and he basically got the beat from that!
Fred from Opeth did all of the guitar for this album. Normally Tobias does it all, but he doesn't play any instrument very regularly because he has the entire band to run and every song to write so he decided to have a professional guitarist do the recording this time.
All I want for Christmas is to see Ghost with a live orchestra. "Twenties," "If You Have Ghosts," "Cirice," etc. would be AMAZING with live strings. I can't WAIT to see the recording of the LA shows from this past summer to see the strings/piano acoustic version of "If You Have Ghosts."
In Portuguese, Chulo (n. m) and Chula (n. f) both can mean (informally) a pimp or someone that takes advantage of someone's generosity/good nature, overcharging someone or obtaining funds in an illicit manner, hence the verb [chular] which means doing just that
Its a very dark broadway type of tune. And it speaks to whats happening right now with the politics of the left echoing the 1930’s leading into the 40’s like our 20’s are now heading into the 30’s. However, if they are following the decade concept, if they do the 90’s, it should get even more bigger and heavier.
Best adult version of a Disney Villain Song yet. They're plenty heavy but I do miss the cheeky "eeeevil" Satanic references. There's no Satan Prayer or Year Zero. Still awesome.
Perfect intro - I would really love to hear a live version (though Kaisarion is one of my favorites). You wouldn’t know what to expect after this (that’s Ghost!).
That music has some resemblance with the baião, a brazilian genre of music. And Tobias actually said that he was inspired by a brazilian rapper, not one in particular. He was, about 10 years ago, watching some kind of presentation, and took that as an inspiration. And Angra has a deep inspiration in baião. If you listen to Holy Land, you will get the resemblance.
1 week til Impera! I don't care if it's heavier or whatever, just want it to sound inspired and I fucking love it so far! Also, 3/3? Kaisarion is out too, would love to hear a reaction to that!
Great reaction. You have a twin in Sweden, called Anders Bagge (a famous songwriter/singer in sweden). 100% same vibe and energy. That´s a compliment for the both of you :)
Very cool review of this amazingly original song. Tobias mentioned the inspiration for this song was some Brazilian rapper whose name he couldn't remember ;-) The guy made these aggressive songs with a similar rhythm and phrasing. The man's endless creativity never ceases to amaze me. He literally picks up ingredients for his work everywhere, adds them to his limitless repertoire effortlessly and is never affraid to use them, even all at the same time if necessary! :-) I love the guitar solo in this song. I don't think this is played by the guy from Opeth. It really sounds like Per's playing on the actual record. It's definitely his style and vibrato I hear. Tobias has been known to do a lot of guitar work himself on the studio albums but I think a lot of the live Ghouls are on this album, at least it sounds like it. The lead parts on the album definitely sound like Per (a.k.a. Sodo) on his strat. Pretty amazing guitar player who clearly upped his skills a few levels during the pandemic 🙂 About the shredding: They don't do it often but Tobias kind of shredded before on the song Faith on the last album.. Funny how the band seems to become more "Metal" every album cycle. They shred more, sound heavier (huge bottom end on Impera and Prequelle) and even added a double bassdrum and me likey! I love those double bass fills on this song!
We just saw the Ghost stadium tour a few weeks ago and Tobias went over to the Guitar Ghoul during a solo and wagged his finger as the Guitar Ghoul started shredding, then pulled him down from the podium. Made me wonder if Tobias had seen your video and was memeing himself. My girl and I laughed our asses off.
I've had this "funny" thought, when I heard this song (which I LOVE!!!) a few times (and maybe I'm not alone in this). Parts of it actually kinda reminds me of good ol' Judas Priest!! Imagine that song with a Judas Priest like beat, in stead of the baião rhythm. Or am I the only one who hears it?? ;D
The reggaeton in metal thing has been done before, most notably by Skindred. Also, the vocal in the verse is very like Needles from SOAD's Toxicity... So it's derivative as hell but it's still awesome! Love the whole record!

Ghost never lets up when it comes to killer songs, man, so fucking good...
That song just gets better and better each times you listen to it. Just amazing.
The rythm is like a typical hispanic beat just with double bass at the end of the line.
I love it :) you're reactions are great!
Saw them on 02/23/2022....and they were the best performance of the night. I was expecting Volbeat to be the headliner, but it ended up being Ghost......and I was not disappointed.
I've seen Ghost 3 times - twice in a large arena - and I've gotta say their live shows are masterful.
I love that they took the reggaetón beat and created something metal around it. It's absolutely amazing too. TBH their earlier stuff kinda interested me, but this album is something I enjoyed listening to.
Your reaction is literally the BEST 😂😂😂
Your channel is one of my favs. "THE GAUDY CROSS" is an excellent song I downloaded and your humor is excellent. Would love to see you react to the whole Impera album.
Symphonyc reggaetón was made first by diablo swing orchestra with their gunpowder chant hehehhe
After about 5 listens, this one really is growing on me. First listen I was not feeling it at all. I am so pumped for 3/11. Hats off to Tobias.
Im a new ghost fan and this is the first time i heard them shredding
greatest live show i've ever witnessed; no one beats Ghost live
Try with Diablo swing orchestra, you will be surprised, if you liked twenties for the novelty of mixing metal with latin rhythms, DSO does it with much other styles from the region, you will love them
Ghost has invened the most melodic low brass melody EVER!! As a trombone player, i rellyed enjoyed it im gonna learn it :)
Twenties is a very unique song and I really loved your reaction to it!
Love it.
Ghost is so funny. I love how they look like a black metal band but sound like pop. Love them
Got to see them live in Hamburg and it was one of the best nights of my life! I got to be in first row and damn do they make sure you enjoy every second of it! Never had a band this big be this active with the crowd and especially singular people in it.
Their music is even better live and they really put on one hell of a show. Can't wait to see them again.
Omg I just went to the concert see in mass on the 19th 5th row it was the best night of my life too
Diablo Swing Orchestra has a few songs that sounds like that, I love them .
I just love Ghost so much
I love these reaction videos because you take in the whole song rather than starting and stopping over and over! Love these videos
Totally agree with you! Good artist evolve. Tobias got the inspiration from a Brazil musician he saw on swedish tv. Only he could write something like these. Why? Because he is a genious. And yes it's Fredrik. He plays on every song on the upcoming Impera album.
Tobias is a fountain of new sounds and the hits keep coming ! You referencing Oingo Boingo vibe is spot on . Love your in depth analysis of Ghost .
Hey man, I was there last night too. It was absolutely fantastic! Unfortunately the set was quite short, but they’ll be back as headliners after the album is released.
did you find your taint
This is a completely new mix of sounds from Ghost. Super cool, Tobias pushing the idea of what Ghost and metal can be!
Do more Ghost!!!
They shred quite a bit on this record. They got Fredrik Akesson from Opeth do them leads on the record....and it's fucking amazing!
So many people criticizing the silly lyrics acting like Ghuleh/Zombie Queen isn’t a thing
You should hear Tobias talk about how he came up with this song… he was watching a documentary about a rapper playing in a Brazilian Favela and he basically got the beat from that!
Ooooh. So it IS Brazilian funk. I was wondering why the beat is so familiar. We hear this lot in Brazil. Cool
Tobias did say that this album was about building and tearing down empires. The lyrics are so pointed. It’s awesome.
During the song writing:
So how do you want your song Twentiees to start?
Ghost: So, have you seen the anime Attack on Titan?
Amazing review! Your review was the first I watched for Twenties, and I'm discovering and really enjoying your channel :)
you are truly becoming my favorite channel...thank you man
Good react man well done
I ain't heard of you till now but subbing now
Best Twenties reaction so far! The song is a Masterpiece!!!
The Reggaeton beat generally bugs me but this is certainly an intriguing piece.
In Portuguese, Chulo (n. m) and Chula (n. f) both can mean (informally) a pimp or someone that takes advantage of someone's generosity/good nature, overcharging someone or obtaining funds in an illicit manner, hence the verb [chular] which means doing just that
I think Tobias said Andrew Lloyd Webber is the influence on this one. The beginning of the song supports that theory.
Symphonic Metal inspired Reggaeton... I'm ready to do it to the floor baby... yeah!!!
Deliverance by Opeth have a section with reggaeton vibes too
After listening to twenties for 5times it grows on you
"IF YOU SHRED YOU'RE DEAD" I'm crying rn omg XDDDD
That song has a hook - it just requires an arena to shout "Twenties!" back
Its a very dark broadway type of tune. And it speaks to whats happening right now with the politics of the left echoing the 1930’s leading into the 40’s like our 20’s are now heading into the 30’s. However, if they are following the decade concept, if they do the 90’s, it should get even more bigger and heavier.
Loved your reaction!! 🤘🤘🤘 I can't wait for the new album. 😍
Best adult version of a Disney Villain Song yet. They're plenty heavy but I do miss the cheeky "eeeevil" Satanic references. There's no Satan Prayer or Year Zero. Still awesome.
I said that the second I heard TWENTIES I said it's a Disney Villain song...
GHOST JUST DROPPED A LIVE VIDEO AND A NEW SONG IN THAT LIVE VIDEO PLEASE REACT TO IT! The new song is called “Spillways.”
I cannot upvote your comment enough and I agree!!
I thought I loved Spillways....and then I heard Griftwood. And I was like JFC each song is more addictive than the last. 😆
I am so glad someone else loves this song as much as I do!
And you can really tell its the Other guy from Opeth on guitar.
Perfect intro - I would really love to hear a live version (though Kaisarion is one of my favorites). You wouldn’t know what to expect after this (that’s Ghost!).
It's so different! I need to listen to this again.
I saw, Ghost on Halloween night in front about 300 people in, Little Rock, AR with, Chelsea Wolfe opening. Great show!
I love the guitar solo in this song. Pretty amazing guitar player who clearly upped his skills a few levels during the pandemic 🙂
About the shredding: They don't do it often but Tobias kind of shredded before on the song Faith on the last album.. Funny how the band seems to become more "Metal" every album cycle. They shred more, sound heavier (huge bottom end on Impera and Prequelle) and even added a double bassdrum and me likey! I love those double bass fills on this song!
the "if you shred you dead" reference killed me
This song really caught me off guard thought I hated it the first 5 seconds then slowly got really into it 😂
i love it. my fav from the new album so far. perfect mix of old and new ghost.
I feel like Diablo Swing Orchesta is already a thing.
They played this at the Kia Forum and it was AMAZING 🫶🏼
I've had this "funny" thought, when I heard this song (which I LOVE!!!) a few times (and maybe I'm not alone in this). Parts of it actually kinda reminds me of good ol' Judas Priest!! Imagine that song with a Judas Priest like beat, in stead of the baião rhythm. Or am I the only one who hears it?? ;D
The reggaeton in metal thing has been done before, most notably by Skindred. Also, the vocal in the verse is very like Needles from SOAD's Toxicity... So it's derivative as hell but it's still awesome! Love the whole record!
I think the "hooks" in this song are the drum beat and the symphonic stabs...those two are what's different than in the other songs.
Glad to know I'm not the only one that has the instinct to dance to this song like that.
The instruments reminds me a bit of Diablo Swing Orchestra. Sounds neat.
