Ghost has a lot of metal in their music, but I think he just doesn't want to be limited by any labels.
IT would be hard to argue that Ghost isn't rock and you could say that they aren't metal. A lot of their songs are "harder" than most of Black Sabbaths stuff. I would say Ghost goes between rock and heavy metal, sometimes very "pop-y", depending on the song. From the Pinnacle to The Pit and Cirice are great examples how heavy metal songs. Not death, meldoic, some kind of core, power, or anything else. Just basic metal. Nowadays it would probably be under labels as gloom/doom metal, or some other sub-genre. If you haven’t yet….go see them live. Went to the Grand Rapids show a few days ago. Surprisingly heavier sound than the albums. Such a better mix live than recorded!
That's because all the albums are recorded by Tobias alone, he plays all the guitar, piano, singing and all that. The only thing he doesn't do is the drums! He records and does everything else himself. When it's performed live, it's played by the very talented musicians hired to be the ghouls. It's why they sound so fantastic live.
@@elctrik9243 Prequelle started off strong with the first 3 songs, but after that I found the album just meanders along, often too much into pop territory, and never really regains the energy, or strength, of the first 3 songs. I never get the urge to listen to Prequelle when I want to listen to Ghost. I'm hoping this album will go more back to their heavier roots.
Loved "Prequelle". Say what you will about it not maintaining the energy level it sets as a precedent in the first 3 songs (although that's not a wrong observation in the least), it was made under duress and he pulled it off pretty well. The identity and ownership of his music was at stake during that time and that album reflects that in the sound. Given time, I think "Prequelle" will be considered a fan favorite. It certainly has more than three great songs on it even if it does blow its load somewhat early on.
I love the music video bc it almost like a story book. Reminds me of the Lemony Snicket Netflix Series. Also has a creepy factor as well. Also as far as a video, it amazed me how close this is to an unmasking. As if the Devil is actually under the mask. Very well done. I believe just like this song as you said intentionally rendered, I believe the video is also intentional
Great to hear your thoughts on this! Interesting from a song-writing perspective - this video "single" version is a bit chopped up. It's almost a minute shorter than the full "album" version. You can hear that on Spotify/Apple music now. I think the full version is a better composition - the intro is less abrupt. The solo is two bars (instead of one), and the ending is extended a bit. I get that they wanted something under 4 mins for the radio/RUclips. Agree on all your points about Ghost being master songcrafters and are really an updated classic/hard rock band. Keep up the great work!
This song has been stuck in my head since the video came out! Also, it's not different names for one demon, they're technically a bunch of different demons
Ghost’s, Tobias Forge, and producer(s)consistently throw the kitchen sink of all that is great from bands that are their own musical icons and inspirations into each song. All of those inspirational pieces, combined with Tobias’s own song-writing genius, add up to what is the magic of their currently released music and the excitement of the much anticipated works on the horizon. Bravo Ghost!!🔥🔥🔥
Steampunk - the Impera cover, the Sunshine video, ghoul's new look in heavy boots and gas masks, and the ornate vests and jackets papa has been wearing on tour. Retrofuturistic.
this is by far my favorite song! hunters moon was awesome but this song is just soo catchy its crazy, been listening this song all day since its released
Same! I love that this song brings me a mix of Opus Eponymous and Meliora. I am a big Black Sabbath fan and I love that this song blends that as well. Very excited for the album!
As a huge fan, I would say that you nailed it with the combination of the bands that they are inspired by. I feel like the true fan base understands the mystique, that they're taking a different approach to heavy music. It's the idea that Ghost is trying to appeal Satan to the masses. It's intentional in how they structure their songs. Heavy doesn't always mean shredding rips and double kicks.
I'm glad you mentioned towards the end of the song, that there are little snippets of influences throughout the song. I find myself going, that was or that was . Just really cool things they do.
i would love to see you go through the whole album since it finally released. the whole album is gold, and to see someone with a lot of music knowledge showing me how these songs are so great, definitely tickles me internally. keep it up!
They did it, this song is a masterpiece Mephistopheles is not exactly a name for Satan, it is a demon from Faust I am a metalhead and love Ghost. They are the farthest thing from Black Metal which I also love.
The actual (and ultimate) execution of the previously discussed "another name for Satan" trope they have going.. and that is actually just "Little Sunshine" It is genius and hiding in plain sight.
For me, Ghost is an evolving fusion of musical styles. There is a lot of pop-rock sensibilities fused with Sabbath-y riffs, harmonies of the 70s bands like BOC or Boston. That's only scratching the surface. Tobias' vision and musicality is quite interesting and amazing.
Ghost's first album was 100% a metal album, and I would classify their 3rd album as a metal album. But every album has had "metal" songs on them. But that's hard to get away from when their songwriter is a major metalhead, who has been in several death and black metal bands, most notably Repugnant.
Yayyyy! You got it approved! 🤘 Loved your vid! It's crazy how I got chills again listening to it, even while someone else was reacting to it. I like Hunter's Moon, but this is my fave song of Ghost at the moment. 🖤👻
It's def one of the best. It was may favorite for a while, but they all grow on you for different reasons. Opus is more raw, almost grungy-doomy. Like old Nirvana, Melvin's almost. Idk
Honestly, I didn't much care for this song when I first heard it, definitely wasn't bad by any means, just wasn't something I'd find myself coming back to, but I'm relentlessly picky. But hearing your analysis through it at the same time really made me appreciate it and realize why I like ghost so much, and made it fun. Kinda like when you watch a movie by yourself, and then with your friends. It's a lot better and more fun. I like this; it's giving me new perspectives.
Loved your reaction and analysis of the song :) But I will fight you on your opinion about the music video xD Personally it's my favorite one together with the music video for Square Hammer. I also think that it's intentional that the face of the devil looks kinda... I don't wanna say cheap but... off? I don't think it's because they didn't have the money (because the rest of the video looks amazing) but because it's more creepy that way. But to each their own ^-^ Keep up the good work!
@@treyxaviermusic I don't think it looks low budget at all and I really like the style.^^ But that's just my personal taste. Nevertheless I hope you'll like their next music video more :)
I agree, I think this video is great. It reminds me of a post-impressionist painting. And considering the vibe of Impera is 1920's era I think it was by design
I'm a huge metal-head and listen to (and play) lots of heavy stuff, but my favorite band is probably Blue Oyster Cult, and as such I've been a huge Ghost fan since the very beginning.
I really enjoy this song. I started listening to Ghost when the prior album dropped with the hard hitting song called “Faith,” by far one of my favorite songs of all time. Now they dropped “Little Sunshine” and holy molly I’m sold. Hunter’s Moon was not my favorite song but it’s good.
Ghost is an experience in itself. To me, music isn't about the sound only... but the meaning behind the music... if what you listen to speaks to you... speaks to your soul, you'll enjoy it. I enjoy Ghost, along with so many other bands. They speak to my soul.
I just started to listen to Ghost, they're already my favorite band as of now i've listened to this song so many times now their new album is coming out less than two weeks, I'm pumped to see what else their new album will have in store for us, concidering they have call me little sunshine & Hunter's moon I'm certian they'll do amazing with this album in Cardinal Copia's era, I feel like the music video is good, not great or *chefs kiss* ( that's amazing in how I put it), I do think in my opinion Square Hammer is like one of my favorties amungst their music videos. But either way, I am pumped for what they have in store for the new album.
The production from the last album to this is night and day... The drums especially sound killer. Great sign of things to come. It's a shame that the RUclips version is the 'radio' version, which is a full minute shorter than the official release. Shortened intro, bridge and guitar solos which is a shame.
Fun reaction. As far as the video, I didn't see it as low budget, I kinda thought it looked a lot like art by Dave McKean, who is one of my favorite artists. ^_^
I'm a GenX metalhead and love Ghost- they hit that sweet nostalgia nerve for me big time. We've not been so crazy about putting labels on metal back then, simply enjoying the vibe and looking down at lesser beings listening to disco and all that other cr*p...good days
I actually luv the video. That low budget look fits the aesthetic really well. It Resemble the primordials of movie making, and the video itself is set on that era. All together gives it a 1800's vibe, and make sit very dark and unerving. The song itself will grow on you...i mean...it will really grow on you! Like the song ''twenties'' grew on me. First time i heard it, i was like ''meh...it well written but not my style'' now its one of my favorites!
Took me a minute 'fore I "got" Ghost, what with Arch Enemy, Lamb Of God, Jinjer and Lorna Shore as my jams, but this album has sunk its hooks but *good* and made me chase after Meliora too. Another reactor commented there's something like the scaffolding of "Hell's Bells" under all this, but Ghost changes it up enough to keep the curves coming. It fully matches, maybe exceeds the elegant creepiness of "No More Tears", and that's saying something. Yup, walkin' along with ol' Uncle Scratch is the overt theme, "Me 'n the Devil Blues", settin' the table with "call out in the middle of the night, for when else would I hear you" - but on the next round, we hear what I think is the key verse: "light up in the middle of the day, for how else could you see me." And we see our back-sliding, train-riding lass dragging something, then passed out on the floor. Addiction? Hell, maybe even the narcotic effect of toxic masculinity on a woman? I think Mephistopheles is something else entirely here. Just scrape a little and the genius scatters out in all directions. The songcraft is ridiculous enough, but look under the horns to see what Forge is really getting at? Bye bye, mind. Nice having you between my ears for a while.
What's interesting, is when you talk about what brings people in with the songwriting and the bass and all that is my 4 year old grandson heard this song on my playlist in my truck and always wants to hear it now, just as much as I do. So, it's drawing in people of all ages....it could be something as simple as the beat, I don't know, all I know is it sounds great to us!
I see lots of 90s influences in their music , Ozzy(zakk) , queensryche, Europe, van Halen ,there even a Vai style guitars in there too , It's almost like listening to the eurovision song contest if every country (other than UK ) was awesome
It tooks me like 3 or 4 listens to the album to realize that it works perfectly as a whole thing. I really was into Prequelle for example, i loved the transition from meliora to prequelle as it is more "modern sound" and clean/polish. I think impera has the best of both worlds: Catchy heavy songs. The melodies and vocal arrangements with the ghoulettes (mostly mad gallica) are perfection!
I’m a hardcore metalhead, but boy do i love my classic rock. I may be 23 but i grew up on classic rock and Ghost hits every spot right for me. Boy do you have a lot to look forward to with the full album tho 😚👌🏻
Howdy from Dallas, Texas. Im new to the band Ghost and the nameless ghoul's. You did some nice Commentary of how the structure of the song. Rock-'n'-Roll man.
Hey man. I love your vids. Just wanted to suggest the song “Griftwood” on the new Ghost album. Probably too many done on that album. But it’s a great song.
Tobias is so talented and has vision. Like Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. They knew exactly what they wanted KISS to be. He knows what he wants Ghost to be and he has the chops to make it happen.
I've figured it out: The people who say they don't like Ghost just don't like good music. Period. There's so much interesting talent in Ghost it's hard to find any of their songs boring.
I agree about the music but disagree about the video. If you look at videos like Square Hammer and From the Pinnacle to The Pit, those aren’t very high budget but they tell the story very well. This video was crystal clear about it’s message. Mephistopheles is taking this girl off the track to heaven to serve him in hell. A higher budget video wouldn’t give the same creep factor that this video had.
I feel like the music video was supposed to be weird, It gives some call backs to their older music videos like Pinnacle to the Pit and Square Hammer. I'm pretty sure they were going for an artsy type of vibe, so maybe the homemade low budget feel was intentional.
I think the music video completely conveys the message behind the song well. Not over done just gets the point across simply. And the way they make the devils face morph is cool and creepy.
I'm a pretty big fan of metal but I love a wide range of rock music and beyond... I enjoy bands that have something unique going on. Ghost is a great group but yeah, they do drift in and out of metal in their music but it's all pretty damn good.
Dude you nailed it!!! I was turned of by the shock rock thing for years.. Then i heard them. Mind blown. Tobi is a master at what he does.. Not what i had excepted simply amazing.. big fan love them.. This song is killer sick just learned it on guitar. but Rats and square hammer will be my faves for ever.

He records and does everything else himself. When it's performed live, it's played by the very talented musicians hired to be the ghouls. It's why they sound so fantastic live.
I'm 52. I grew up with 80s metal. But I must say in all honesty, I'm very impressed by Ghost. After hearing Dance Macabre, I was hooked!!
Lovely. Ghost just keeps doing Ghost stuff and it’s just so good. Meliora was terrific and this sounds like a great follow up
thoughts on prequelle?
This is not a follow up to "Meliora". The album this song is on, "Impera" is the follow up to "Prequelle" which follows "Meliora".
@@bradkneely2798 prequel is one of my favorites already, I got into ghost just after it came out so to me it was always just part of their catalog.
You do know the cat is out of the bag on that front.. right? Tobias Forge is the exact opposite of Satan he is a songwriting God.
Thank you for a song reaction that doesn't pause every 5 seconds. Right format, music playing and commentary over it at a good mix level. Awesome.
This song has been stuck in my head since the video came out! Also, it's not different names for one demon, they're technically a bunch of different demons
Killer track! Tobias knows what hes doing.
Ghost doesn't make the heaviest music, but godamn the music they do make is catchy.
This metalhead loves some Ghost. It's incredible music
I'm glad you mentioned towards the end of the song, that there are little snippets of influences throughout the song. I find myself going, that was or that was . Just really cool things they do.
This tune rules! Tobias can write!
i would love to see you go through the whole album since it finally released. the whole album is gold, and to see someone with a lot of music knowledge showing me how these songs are so great, definitely tickles me internally. keep it up!
They did it, this song is a masterpiece
Mephistopheles is not exactly a name for Satan, it is a demon from Faust
I am a metalhead and love Ghost. They are the farthest thing from Black Metal which I also love.
The actual (and ultimate) execution of the previously discussed "another name for Satan" trope they have going.. and that is actually just "Little Sunshine"
It is genius and hiding in plain sight.
I really prefer the full version of the song with the extra minute of awesomeness!
Ghost is an awesome classic rock style band! That describes them perfectly. I’m also a metal head, lots of thrash and death metal.
I actually love the simplicity of the video
Ghost's first album was 100% a metal album, and I would classify their 3rd album as a metal album. But every album has had "metal" songs on them. But that's hard to get away from when their songwriter is a major metalhead, who has been in several death and black metal bands, most notably Repugnant.
Awesome! Now I gotta go watch Gaudy Cross again.
Yayyyy! You got it approved! 🤘 Loved your vid! It's crazy how I got chills again listening to it, even while someone else was reacting to it. I like Hunter's Moon, but this is my fave song of Ghost at the moment. 🖤👻
Yeah I just had to put the Gaussian blur up to 100% hahaha
Thanks for your help though, wouldn’t have thought to do that otherwise!
@@treyxaviermusic no prob! 😁🤘 are you planning on attending any Ghost shows this run?
Hoping to go the the Anaheim show
Since you've just become a Ghost fan, what did you think of Opus Eponymous? I love all their albums, but the first (to me) is their best.
Opus Eponymous is their best album
Infestissumam is my fav
Opus Eponymous is their best album.
It's def one of the best. It was may favorite for a while, but they all grow on you for different reasons.
Opus is more raw, almost grungy-doomy. Like old Nirvana, Melvin's almost. Idk
@@davidd5912 Agreed my gai. Like i said, I do love all their albums, but there's something cool and unique about Opus.
The little guitar riff in the turnaround after the first chorus is my favorite. So much flavor in it. I love playing it.
Ghost is what everyone hoped Meatloaf’s “Bat Out Of Hell” would sound like. In the best way possible.
It's funny this song weirdly reminded me of Meat Loaf, Meat was awesome live, he was a great fucking guy in real life.
This is a very well thought out and played song. Good catch on the Boston and Queen influences. And the chords frens thing at the end was awesome.
Freddie Mercury meets King Diamond meets power blues ... love Ghost
Scorpions dressed like KISS.
Love the video, could easily have been on MTV back in the mid 90's.
Just cool and catchy, I like how Tobias 'sunshine' emphasizes 💖🙏👍👍Good analysis man 👌💋
Loved your reaction and analysis of the song :) But I will fight you on your opinion about the music video xD Personally it's my favorite one together with the music video for Square Hammer. I also think that it's intentional that the face of the devil looks kinda... I don't wanna say cheap but... off? I don't think it's because they didn't have the money (because the rest of the video looks amazing) but because it's more creepy that way. But to each their own ^-^ Keep up the good work!
Compared to their other ones though? This one looks like a B+ low budget film school project hahaha
@@treyxaviermusic I don't think it looks low budget at all and I really like the style.^^ But that's just my personal taste. Nevertheless I hope you'll like their next music video more :)
The reason the "devil" face is "off" is because Mephistopheles can take many forms and faces to suit the person he is going to make a "DEAL" with.
I also think this video is spot on as the "devil" is taking her through a drug trip...the last stop is in Hell!
This has become my favorite Ghost song!
Mine too 🙏🏻🙌🏻🎸🇩🇰
I love ghost ❤️❤️ if they had been around in the 80s they would have been legendary.
This became my favorite song immediately
I really enjoy this song. I started listening to Ghost when the prior album dropped with the hard hitting song called “Faith,” by far one of my favorite songs of all time. Now they dropped “Little Sunshine” and holy molly I’m sold. Hunter’s Moon was not my favorite song but it’s good.
I think the devil had a human face imposed on purpose. Symbolism I guess. This song is killer though. Can't wait for the whole album.
I don't know which is their "best" song, but my favourite is Dance Macabre.
But this one is pretty damn nice...!
For me, their "best song" changes all the time.
My "best" song has remained the same since I became a fan in 2016 Cirice. I love all of their songs, but that one is my all time favorite.
I haven't listened to this song in about 4 or 5 days, amd it's still stuck in my head!!
So much going on in this song. Listened to it once & now it remains in my head.🖤
this has a major major production value to it...... the track pulled me in instantly.......never heard of them before....... but Im sold !!
Haha I went through the same ghost binge when I first heard them… something about them makes me smile. Thanks for your channel ✌️
its my favorite video in like 15 years, tells a great story and i found it artistic
It’s a great song..! A different tempo, yet organic and full of twists. Love it
Dude, your take on this is amazing! Well said, mate
So, it's drawing in people of all ages....it could be something as simple as the beat, I don't know, all I know is it sounds great to us!
i love this band they have so much melody which just hooks me
The music video version is different then the album version. The music video seems to be a "radio edit" of sorts.
yea the biggest difference i've noticed is the solo. its way better and longer on the album version
the live version of this music has such an incredible female backing vocals.. you need to hear it. listen to ghost live at the ministry
Ghost rules, when you get it, you get it
Never ever leave my head! This will always haunt me!! It will never ever leave my dome! HAIL PHAETON!! THE DESTROYER OF THE OLD WORLD!!
Amazing song. I listened to it 43786459327492 times already
I just found out about Ghost. And your reacts are great. Seeing them in Milwaukee next weekend
Hey man. I love your vids. Just wanted to suggest the song “Griftwood” on the new Ghost album. Probably too many done on that album. But it’s a great song.
Excellent analysis of the video and post production on your vid!
Tobias is so talented and has vision. Like Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. They knew exactly what they wanted KISS to be. He knows what he wants Ghost to be and he has the chops to make it happen.
I've figured it out:
The people who say they don't like Ghost just don't like good music. Period.
There's so much interesting talent in Ghost it's hard to find any of their songs boring.
Not Satan a 😈 demon. Little sunshine was allister Crowley call me little sunshine. Theme of album..fall of empires/ society.
I could not agree more! I love the look and the style of the video. It's different!
Fuckin love Ghost, dude!
I feel like the music video was supposed to be weird, It gives some call backs to their older music videos like Pinnacle to the Pit and Square Hammer. I'm pretty sure they were going for an artsy type of vibe, so maybe the homemade low budget feel was intentional.
It is a grower. Give it time and listenings :)
I think the queen connection is even deeper than you talk about here. Totally changes how I hear their stuff now
Ghost never disappoints ....gold!!
Check out their performance with Jimmy Kinmel. I think it's better than the official video.
