Right on Nate, good grab here, fortunate to watch Brandon perform and he is the best of the best in an activity that keeps growing in terms of demand and pushing what individuals are capable of. I know my Corps career helped in the drum set department not only in technical rhythmical ability but the ability to maintain focus for long periods of time behind the kit and well as timekeeping and preparation. Keep up the great work!

Nice interview! I caught Brandon live with his band recently and was really impressed with how reserved his playing was. He has crazy chops but has the musical maturity to set it aside to just groove.

Great interview! I've been a fan of Brandon for many years, so this was an unexpected treat. The last third of the video where you guys talked about fulcrum and technique differences between marching snare and drum kit was the kind of high-level drum geekery that I absolutely love. You mentioned dog-earing that discussion for a mini video later, and I am here for it! Thanks guys. Also, Brandon describing Brian Blade's sound as "rich" was spot on. I saw him live recently and was gobsmacked. It was practically a religious experience.

oh wow im pretty shocked… i never expected my two parallels of percussion (drumline and jazz) to intertwine in the vessel of an 80/20 video. thank you for the upload

Nate, you have great chops as an interviewer. This is a skill that you have obviously worked on and the result is great.
Good pacing and, most importantly, you ask your guests questions that make them think and then answer in more than a single sentence. I think such questions might be new to Brandon, but he grew into it over the course of the interview.

It’s crazy because some areas are lucky to start band/marching percussion early as they can. My area in southwest Missouri, our public schools start band in the 6th grade, and marching band/indoor percussion in high school. And yet I hear students in the California area start outdoor/indoor percussion in the 5th grade. So of course those groups are going to have a successful group of musicians by the time they graduate high school. We were just lucky to have good enough funding for the band program to compete and become finalists every year at Dayton arena. But we don’t get funding from the city, we had boosters in our part of the district with wealthy parents in the area to help fund our program. I honestly swear, sometimes schools that have money, are able to fund a 5th grade band, fund a marching group in the middle school, and create successful musicians. Always seems that money creates successful programs by allowing resources such as more teachers/technicians for ensembles and better designers/composers. Whereas a small school with little funding would have a single teacher doing all the composing/designing/teaching.

And I’m mostly talking about ensemble level of musicality as a collective. You can still have single individuals become successful from small, low funded schools. But a group of students receiving all the same attention, those students create a better ensemble setting vs the typical single student carrying the group.
